.html.html I think the fall of DVD sales are due to the transition of DVD to Blu-ray. Why buy a DVD if sooner or later you'll end up buying a Blu-ray version as well? And because Blu-rays are still expensive, people are just waiting for prices to drop as did DVDs in the beginning. I remember the first Planet of the Apes DVD Boxset was $100, now that same boxset can be bought for $20 to $40.
Right now, buying DVD and Blu-ray movies is just in a very bad place right now. Especially when the studios will suddenly through a special edition version of a movie once everyone buys the first released version of it. It's not that DVDs and Blu-rays are any less exciting, nor piracy is killing the market, it's simply that people are being a lot more smarter and wiser when it comes to the purchase of movies due to the history of DVD sales.
But yet the studios just don't seem to get it. They think people continue to be stupid about it.
But the drop in DVD, Blu-ray sales clearly shows that their not. And pretty much fedup with this greedy DVD format market.

There's all kinds of films being made. People just aren't going out and seeing them. And they aren't getting the budgets they used to. So it's the small flicks and the big budget tentpoles. The middle budget films are disappearing.
And now it's getting worse because DVD sales are going down, which was the salvation of the small films. Of course that's because of the economy but to the corporate folks it's 2012 in 2009. Don't look for things to change after a summer that saw "Transformers 2" as the # 1 flick in the U.S.

.htmlI have to say I agree with Rory on this one. The TV series is available on DVD in its original form. The TV movies are just cut up versions. They didn't add any deleted scenes or anything that was not seen when the series first aired. In fact they cut some stuff out.

True, but in the 70s and early 80s for most the only way to see the theatrical films was on the 4:30 movie (or something similar in markets other than New York). But now would I rather see those cut up 4:30 movie versions or the DVD/Blu-Ray versions of the theatrical films?
> > I'm curious as to what got the TV movies made. I don't think that- six > years after the show had been cancelled- anyone was thinking about > syndicating the series. > > No of course not. There were no where enough episodes for syndication. But the POTA theatrical films were doing very well when they were aired on local stations. So to milk more money out of the franchise FOX created the TV-movies out of the TV series and sold them to the local stations as "5 new Planet of the Apes movies". <.html

.htmlI have to disagree with you here. The fall in DVD sales is probably more due to the recession than people buying Blu-Rays. Blu-Ray sales have not been good. Most who purchased a DVD player in the last 10 years are not running out to replace it with a Blu-Ray player. In fact DVD player sales are still higher than Blu-Ray players. Why buy a Blu-Ray player costing $200 or more when you can get a DVD player for under $100? Plus consumer surveys show that most don't realize that Blu-Ray players will play DVDs too. They think if they buy a Blu-Ray player, they'll have to replace all the DVDs in their collection. Plus many consumers don't see a substantial upgrade in quality with Blu-Ray over DVD like they saw with DVD over VHS a decade ago.
Also, DVD players have probably reached a saturation point in US households by the point. Combine that with consumers not having the amount of disposable income they had a few years ago, you get a drop in sales. People are just not spending right now on anything. Same can probably said about DVD releases. People have bought their all time favorite movies and TV series on DVD already and are being selective about the new stuff that is coming out to save money.

I have to disagree with you here.
People have bought their all time favorite movies and TV series on DVD already and are being selective about the new stuff that is coming out to save money.

.htmlA lot of this debate reminds me of Zaius at the end of Planet. There he says "There is no contradiction between faith and science, true science". Of course Zaius has it wrong, it is not just reliant on true science but on true faith as well. Unfortunately like some in regard to climate change Zaius refuses to accept the scientific evidence presented in the cave because of his ideology. However, as Taylor later points out, like an MIT professor who is chiefly funded by ExxonMobil & Opec (http://tinyurl.com/l73q7m),
Zaius has an inherent conflict of interest in his role as Chief Defender of the the Faith. Thus he dismisses the scientific evidence right in front of him until the doll says 'mama' and he can dismiss it no more. But instead of accepting scientific fact (http://tinyurl.com/5jlyn) Zaius decides to supress it, like an admistration that supressed NASA science (http://tinyurl.com/ot2k8) for years, and blow up the cave to destroy the doll that conflicts with his ideology.

I have no idea if DVD sales have
slumped.
However for me Blu Ray and HD tv's all seem a bit
much. I understand that viewing is probably better but it is a bit of a stretch
for people to go out, buy a TV that is HD Ready, then a Blu Ray player, Surround
Sound System and then the actual films.
It's not like DVD's where to me they look fine
anyway, a vast improvement on VHS.
Blu Ray seems a bit of a stretch and when my DVD
player bites the dust I will replace it with a Blu Ray and not
untill.

We've never had a problem with a discussion of politics as it relates back to POTA since it is a political film. But this thread has really departed from anything having to with POTA. There are plenty of political discussion boards out there where everyone can debate about Obama, Palin Rush, Healthcare, Afganistan, etc. I can even recommend a few to anyone interested. But this group does not exist to discuss politics. It's here to discuss POTA. Please remember that. Thanks.

To add to these fair points, there is also the fact that there are many
more things to spend money and time on, at least compared to 10 or 15
years ago. Mobile games, sms, mms, online games, Wii and other console
games, the internet in general, on-demand video and TV, streaming
services, Netflix.....
There's no way DVD and BluRay can grow as fast as in the early 00s with
all that competition.

LOL! Christer is no POTA fanboy. He's a film professor at a university,
with a special interest in sci-fi.
However, do you argue that Charlton Heston is a great actor? I enjoy
many of his movies, including POTA, but I never thought of him as a
"great actor". He looks his parts, he was a cool actor, did many good
movies and all that, but his movies were usually better than his
individual performances.
But you can keep on reading. Christer rated POTA 2001 only 3 of 10,
which I think is near the general consensus of that movie. And his
rating says a lot, because Christer is a big Burton fan.

Gen. Ursus looks cool, but, as Zira implies, he's a bonehead, and like
Rush, he's a d*@%#bag!
Hey, that reminds me... I have a small story. I can relate Rush
Limbaugh to PLANET OF THE APES.
Back in the early/mid '90s Limbaugh had a TV show. Now, I despise
Limbaugh; I truly believe he's an idiot -- and I don't care how rich he
is -- he's made his money selling advertising on radio by sitting on
his ass and sprouting off the most simpleminded, politically prejudiced
nonsense in the country, not allowing himself to be challenged on it,
and then on top of that he goes gets himself addicted to drugs,
destroys his hearing and has four failed marriages under his belt --
and, oh, by the way, I think he's a major a**hole too.
But anyway, I used to try and listen to some of him on the radio and I
once watched some of this TV show he had. It was a terrible show,
terrible as in dull and unimaginative -- pretty much like Limbaugh
himself, but one day he was talking about the Democratic Congress (this
was back in the early '90s when the Democrats controlled Congress and
Limbaugh was doing the same thing then to them and Clinton that he's
now doing to the current Democratic Congress and President -- if
there's one thing I will give Limbaugh credit for it's consistency) and
his show was him sitting at a desk and showing film clips of the
terrible liberal things he wanted to destroy or merely mock in his oh
so adorable and hysterical way (it's really funny how Limbaugh thinks
he's so funny), and he shows this clip of row upon row of Congressmen
either cheering or applauding something (I can't remember what it was)
and then Limbaugh comes back on and says.... "Look at that... it's like
something out of 'Planet of the Apes.'" Of course he's referring
actually to BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES and the Ursus speech scene,
but at the time I couldn't believe the coincidence that there I was to
catch Limbaugh in probably the only POTA reference he'll ever make.
And that's my story.

believe Heston is "great." As an actor in comparison of Laurence
Olivier, Heston was not that "great." But I think he gave very good
performances in many of his films. His best is probably WILL PENNY
(Have you seen it?), and I think he does a "great" job in PLANET, in
fact, the movie wouldn't be as good as it is if it wasn't for Ol'
Chuck, and I think the rest of the series is the lesser because he
wasn't in them, BUT, I also believe that Heston was the kind of film
actor that was only as good as his director, so......

Kevin, not sure if I am allowed to attend the SDCC 2010. I really want to, but my husband is refusing me to attend. Besides, I have to see how the children do at Wondercon first before I splurge on our airline tickets.
On a different note, is anybody attending the San Francisco Star Trek Convention in January, 2010???

.htmlHi, folks,
Some time back, I unearthed an unpublished page from Marvel, containing a chimp named Viraga. For a while, that was the only known page from that story, until last year, when three more pages surfaced.
Now, I've located six more, thanks to POTA fan Ed Haber, bringing the total known pages up to 10. Those pages are now available on Hunter's site, in the Marvel Ultimate Edition section. The new pages contain a title for the story, "Forbidden Zone Prime," and offer a much better idea of what it's about.
Unfortunately, we still don't have the page listing the artist, who remains a mystery, nor do we yet know how long the tale is. But I'm starting to have faith that the rest of the story may some day emerge!
Enjoy!

It would take a great deal of genetic manipulation to create talking

would have to become more human-like in order to talk.

Even straight actors can be kinky.
Pee Wee in the Porn House. Bob
"Hogan's Heroes" Crane's Home
Movies. But I know what you're
saying about Hollywood. When
I found out how films were made,
I found it very difficult to watch a
movie and just get caught up in
it, and not think of them as actors,
an pick apart the lighting, sound,
camera angles, etc . . . Just as
a side note. Paul Williams is
nearly 70. 68 years old. I know!
Ever notice how both he and Kim
tend to wander in and out of a
British accent? I know why she
did, not quite sure why he does.

And yet they seemed fine about working with Heston.
And Heston had no problem working with them. In
fact, it was Heston who recommended Evan for it.
Not the case however in POTA2K1. Because even
though he played a gun wielding robber in Pulp Fiction
Tim Roth is a very anti gun Brit and hated having to
appear on the set with Heston, let alone do a scene.
