I assume you're talking about this image which was used on alternate

Jess, I could kiss you. You have got to be proud of your results of Burke and
Virdon. Seriously, making casts of these available to the group would make so
many custom figures complete. They are truly awesome. I was so pleased when I
received the custom outfits from you and then so disappointed with the scale and
likeness that Ada produced with her Burke head, especially when her Brent head
was so spot on. Please let me know when you are happy to release these to the
group, I'm already cleaning my brush collection.

.html Jessica,
I agree with everyone else, these 2 sculpts are fantastic and you have an ape obligation to make these incredible heads available to our group. It is a question of simian customization! Now I just have to find a good painter to paint them. Thank you - thank you - Thank you!
Great job,

I was going through my books and believe it or not the Brian Pendreigh Planet of the apes book has it in (glad I found). But like everything else who knows. John,
I too have a PLANET 3-sheet, linen-backed. I paid around $900 for it back in the late '80s, which hurt because I had bought the same poster back in the very early '70s for $15!!!! But, my younger self didn't know how to take care of things. I eventually took that poster to college and had it on my dorm room wall for a while. Anyway, it got so tattered I eventually decided to part with it. Couldn't just throw it out -- SO I BURNED IT!!!! Years later realized I should have kept it and could have had it restored. Really beat myself up over that for a long time.
I also bought a PLANET 6-sheet, linen-backed, in the late '90s. Paid $1200 for that. I've looked at it a couple times, but it lives now rolled up in a thick cardboard tube the size of a telephone pole.

thanks alot jamesa1102 you got it exactly. The ony one missing is the Escape one. Have alot like I said(not bragging, just had no other hobbies other than hi-end audio in those days and I was an only child so it made money my way alittle easier). I have that conquest style "B" as it says on the back of the poster. The 3 sheet or 6 sheet is in that style. My three sheet of "Planet" is worth about 3 grand,(I had an offer) but Im keeping it for now.
Lets see how the new Apes movie does. Prices shot up when burtons movie came out in 2001.Thanks for the great posts with the poster..john m (friend). Thanks for looking out on E-bay. I"ll do the same..

According to the book "Legend of the Planet of the Apes" by Brian Pendreigh, another reason Robinson left was that Fox cut the budget for PLANET and so it was decided by the producers that Robinson, who was to be paid $150,000 to play the part, was too expensive. They paid him $50,000 to walk away, and got Maurice Evans to play Dr. Zaius for only $25,000. All totaled, it cost $75,000 to get an actor to play Dr. Zaius, but they saved $75,000 by NOT having to pay Robinson $150,000.
Is this story true? Don't know, but for me it has the ring of truth, and the refusal because of the heart condition, or beard story, and just that -- beards!

| Subject: PLANET Blu-ray Audio AGAIN |
.htmlDon't want to keep beating a dead horse here, but I'm going to bring about the issue of PLANET's 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack again. I'm doing this because since the Blu-ray came out a year ago I have been listening to it through surround decoders that were made before the introduction of Blu-ray's HD Audio formats, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, and because I declared the PLANET HD soundtrack a joke and mostly mono.
Well, last Friday I finally bit the bullet and ordered a new A/V receiver from Amazon that includes built-in HD decoders -- a Pioneer VSX-819H that was selling on Amazon for only $268 to replace my now 11-year-old Pioneer VSX-07TX that decoded Dolby Digital 5.1 but had no DTS decoding -- and cost $900 when new! I had been only able to hear the HD Blu-ray audio from PLANET by setting my player to output a PCM audio signal that gave me two-channel audio that then had to be processed through the old Pioneer's Dolby Pro-Logic processor to give me a barely passable, center-channel heavy surround with no real stereo separation at all. It sucked and I've spent a very frustrating year watching PLANET on Blu-ray with this kind of audio. I've suspected I simply wasn't hearing what I should, but Scott and Al here also seemed to be getting the same result, and they had better surround processors,
so I was worried I'd just spent $268 plus postage for little better than what I already had. However....
I got the new A/V receiver three days ago and I'm happy to report that my suspicions were correct and that properly decoded PLANET's 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio is..... well, not bad. I can't say it's great because I think the 5.1 stereo/surround mix could be much more imaginative, but it isn't mostly mono, does have stereo and surround presence, and the best audio fidelity I've ever hear from the movie's soundtrack (except maybe what I heard back in '68 which I no longer can remember). The previous "35th Anniversary" standard DVD had both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks, and a French dubbed Dolby 2.0 track, that had better stereo separation but weaker fidelity than the Blu-ray's HD audio. The dubbed French soundtrack is reprocessed on the Blu-ray in Dolby Digital 5.1 and is definitely a more active surround mix than the new DTS-HD one, BUT
the French soundtrack isn't perfect, is dubbed French dialogue of course, and is harsh in the high end. I have to say now that I prefer the newer DTS-HD mix. It isn't as "active" as I'd like, but as I've said, it's not bad. I haven't yet gotten out the sequels on Blu-ray to give them a listen.
As to PLANET's soundtrack on video, either on standard DVD or Blu-ray, NONE accurately reproduce the Goldsmith score as it should be heard, which is, for me, what's heard on the Varese Sarabande CD. Listening to that in surround is like having the original orchestra right in front of you. All the different video versions of the movie mess with the original music sound mix, which I wish they didn't do, but I'm not in charge.
So, now I wait for the blow back from Scott over this. As far as I know, he'll still insists the soundtrack is a disaster, but I no longer agree. But, I've only just started living with it. Over the course of time my opinion may change again.

For those worried that James Cameron's
profligate spending will jeopardize the new POTA suckling at Fox's teet, fear
not!
A Fox spokesperson says "Avatar" was made for
a reasonable $ 237 million, plus $ 150 million for marketing, making it cheaper
than "Pirates 3", "Spidey 3" and the recent "Harry Potter". A $ 400 million
break even point seems doable, plus I understand Fox was in for less than 50% of
the budget.
Fox has not mortgaged POTA's future! Says
said spokesman: "The new technology Cameron is using affords budget-saving
measures in terms of extras and the environment".
All that worry over nothing.

When did it become profitable when a movie costs 1 dollar and after all is said and done brings back a 1.05 dollars. The 2001 apes film was a little like that. Its total cost I think was somewhere around 200 million with marketing and its final gross was 386million worldwide. My point is that the studios make a profit but nowhere near when lets say Conquest cost 1.8 million and brought in 10 million dollars . Thats over 5 times the cost, as opposed to Planet (2001) which profit was about 1.7 times its costs. Well, they kind of were new from that point of view. But like we both
acknowledged, they didn't hide what the source material was. Any station
who had gotten good ratings airing the five films would certainly want to
exploit that interest further if they could, and the fact that they had material
which hadn't been on the air in almost six years AND hadn't been seen all that
much during it's original run was enough for them to call it new. If anyone felt
lied to/betrayed by the TV station and/or Fox by the telemovies being called
"The NEW Planet of the Apes", I've yet to hear about it.

five theatrical films. <<

You know what though? If WABC/Channel 7 said they were going to
do a retro thing during a sweeps period and run four weeks of "The 4:30
Movie" (let's say POTA, Superheroes, Godzilla, and Vincent Price) complete with
the movie edits as they were originally shown and the original bumpers, I
**guarantee** you there'd be a ratings spike in that time period for those four
weeks. Plus the increased use of recording devices. I mean, we've all
sat through the AMC airings (once they went to the commercial format), the
showings of PLANET on The History Channel, and I'm sure there
are local stations that still run the films. Plus even when they're uncut
on something like Cinemax, you still see the pan & scan versions when we've
all been spoiled with widescreen.
There are worse ways to spend one's time...

The demographics of the available audience in that daypart most likely wouldn't be interested in seeing that old 4:30 Movie. Since the 4:30 Movie went off the air 28 years ago, elementary, high school and even college age kids home at that time, don't remember it so there is no nostalgia factor for them. And why would they want to see cut up versions of old movies when they can catch them uncut on cable or buy/rent the DVD or download it from NetFlix? Women would probably rather watch Oprah or Tyra or Ellen. And since the 4:30 Movie only started in 1968, the generation that grew up with it hasn't started to retire yet. So most current Retired Adults wouldn't really have a nostagia factor for it either.

One of the things that Cameron said about motion capture was that it prevents an actor from sitting in a makeup chair for four hours everyday.

That's exactly where I screen captured it from, the "Backstory" featurette on Disc One of the 2-disc M*A*S*H DVD, and that is the Icarus prop spaceship (not a replica) standing up outside the sound stage. I think this was part of footage Roddy McDowall shot in 1967 but wasn't used in any of the POTA stuff.

Yes, and I talk like that too -- but sometimes, and sparingly, and if I'm in front of a certain audience, whether it's 200 hundred people or just two, I check my language to make sure I don't come off as a foulmouthed crass A-Hole! I do it for myself, not just those who might be listening. It's simply a question of "do you have common decency, dignity and a sense of decorum -- or don't you?"
I think Kevin Smith is probably an alright decent dude, but he's also a slob.

Just an FYI. In that clip Smith is speaking to an audience of college students.
Also, I don't blame him for his language. Whenever I talk about Burton's remake, I can't help but let a few expletives fly.

Yes, and I talk like that too -- but sometimes, and sparingly, and if I'm in front of a certain audience, whether it's 200 hundred people or just two, I check my language to make sure I don't come off as a foulmouthed crass A-Hole! I think Kevin Smith is probably an alright decent dude, but he's also a slob.

Funny thing. I was listening to comedy on
the digital radio TV feature. And an old bit
that Bill Cosby did called Riga Mortis came
on in which he says GD. I'll spare Rory's
virginal ears, or eyes in this case. Isn't
Mr. Cosby the one who told off Eddie
Murphy about working blue and saying
Filth Foul Flarn Filth? Kim herself had
the F word in her book. And once when
I was talking to her on the phone she
spilled her drink and said S**t. This is
how people talk. Watch those breakout
videos on youtube. Even back in the old
days, if they blew a take, actors and
actresses cursed a blue streak. True,
it's over done, but he isn't Shakespeare,
who also had quite a few cuss words
in his plays, he's the guy from Jay and
Silent Bob. He thinks he's Lenny Bruce!

It would be nice though if Smith could talk for more than twenty seconds without using some kind of expletive. He's part and parcel of how the culture has devolved over the last half century. Crass is king!

Silent Slob?
Yeah, I often have to keep
myself in check. Cussing
a blue streak isn't second
nature for me, it's first. I've
used oaths that would make
a sailor blush. But sometimes
four letter words are my palette.
Though like any good effect in
music, film, literature or any art
they should be used sparingly
and chosen carefully. I think
the younger generation just
think they're being funny. But
it often just comes off crass or
lame. It no longer has shock
value. That one reason I think
if you want to have a shocking
new POTA it needs an R- Rating.

I finally found a copy (issue 34) this past week (Barnes & Noble
is a full month behind), and I noticed in their 'Time Warp/The Year That Was...'
section that they covered 1971. So not only was ESCAPE mentioned, but also great
films like THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, THE OMEGA MAN, THX 1138, and one of the best
Science Fiction TV series ever: UFO. This got me to thinking that-
presumably- the previous issue would cover 1970 and as such, BENEATH would be
included. Does anyone here have a copy of issue 33 who could verify?

OK, here's another batch of screen captures. The top black and white photo is from Fox's 1941 Oscar Best Picture "How Green Was My Valley." It's supposed to be set in South Wales, England, but because of WWII they instead shot it at the Fox Ranch in Malibu, CA. The kid being carried away in the shot is 12-year-old Roddy McDowall and just to his left, in the distance is a meadow. That's where the cornfield was in "Planet of the Apes" some twenty-seven years later.
In the left of the shot from HGWMV you see a small smokestack in front of two men. The area of the meadow behind that smokestack corresponds to the area shown in the first shot from PLANET just below it, and the area shown in the second shot from PLANET corresponds approximately to that behind the man carrying McDowall, and this means that the hilltop from which the shot from HGWMV was taken is just outside of the right side of the second shot from PLANET.
This meadow is still there and can be easily viewed on Google Earth.
I hope I'm making this clear for everyone and that you all find this as fascinating as I do. I got more stuff coming.

Now here's something I've only noticed in the last few months of watching PLANET on Blu-ray. These three screen captures from PLANET are from the trek across the desert. I'm sure everyone will recall at least two of these shots because they're among the most striking in the film. The one on the top of the page has a tall, narrow butte (which I'm sure has an actual name, but I don't know it, so I'll just call it Spire Tower) on the right of the frame. I've put a red arrow in the shot to indicate it.
What I've noticed is that this same "Spire Tower" can be seen in the very next shot, and then in a shot at little further into the film. The red arrows will let you easily see what I'm pointing out.
This just goes to show what I, and others here, who have visited this location -- just west of the southern end of Lake Powell -- have said about it; how small the location is, only a few square miles.
I hope I'm not spoiling for anyone here the illusion of a vast wasteland the film depicts. It was spoiled for me when I finally did visit the place.
-- Rory
By the way, if anyone here has noticed something they find interesting in one of the POTA films or TV shows that you'd like to share with the group, post what it is and at what time it's on the screen (just look at the display on your DVD player after you still the image) and I'll be glad to capture it and post it in the group for you -- I have nothing better to do.

It's always wonderful to see what might have been but... well... maybe the Marvel title was cancelled about the right time.
I think All 3 running sagas (Terror, Chronicles and Derek Zane) had run their natural course and were headed further and further away from what made them so memorable to begin with. It would have been interesting to see more new stories, which is why 'Forbidden Zone Prime' is so intriguing.
But hat's off to you for your detective work, to Hunter for hosting and of course to Doug for sharing.
