I remember he also did a Western
with Dean Martin & Robert Mitchum
called 5 Card Stud. If that was a Fox
film it was likely shot at the Fox Ranch.

That's actually very common.
John Ford mad a lot of Westerns
using Monument Valley as a location,
usually to substitute for the Big Bend
Country. It's closer to LA and topography
is more majestic. However it's also more
distinctive. So they just move to the other
side and shoot the next scene at a different
angle, a bit like one of those student films I
did where we had to sub a backyard for the
wood because we were loosing the light.

Anyone else ever notice this thing during PLANET? I do every time I watch. Is it just coincidence, an acident while filming, or an old relic of an ape-like mutant dog civilization?

FIVE CARD STUD was a Paramount movie, and shot in Durango, Mexico. There was a Paramount Ranch, though, just a few miles north of the Fox Ranch. Still there as far as I know.

When I posted the clip from U-Tube I didn't think that everyone would be focused on Smith. I thought it was more about Burton and where his mind was at after the remake was released.

Wasn't the Ape City in Battle filmed at that location too?

Yes, and I talk like that too -- but sometimes, and sparingly,
and if I'm in front of a certain audience, whether it's 200 hundred
people or just two, I check my language to make sure I don't come off as a
foulmouthed crass A-Hole! I do it for myself, not just those who might
be listening. It's simply a question of "do you have common decency,

I think Kevin Smith is probably an alright decent dude, but he's also a

Im not a nerd persee, but have nerdy habits, it was not meant as an insult, but I remember vividly back 30-40 years ago the type of fan 2001 attracted(Im talking about repeat viewers who were kids that talked endlessly about the spaceships and burnouts who couldnt wait for the light show at the end). To put it another way the 2001 fans were mathematicians and Ape fans were socialogists. Im trying for an analogy but its hard without making someone sneer. Eggheads both but different.Ape fans enjoy the time travel aspects but not nessesarly the math involved. Im only comparing them because 2001 gets the most prestige about how sci-fi grew up in 1968 whenever the two are involved in a written piece. How it can be in so many top ten list is beyond me. Im probably not smart enough. Though it is mostly about the technical aspects of film making, not narative, that it gets points for. Thats the best way to say it, 2001 technical, Apes story telling. <.html

Wait one moment.... I have to calm myself down.... OK, let's go....
I'M A HUGE FAN OF 2001!!!!!! How dare you, Sir? HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!!!
I saw it not long after POTA in 1968 when I was nine years old. I went with just my father on a gray, drizzly Saturday afternoon to a Cinerama theatre in Hicksville Long Island, New York. I thought the movie wonderful and it's one of my cherished childhood memories. Ever since '68, "2001: A Space Odyssey" has been my second favorite film next to POTA and remains so.
Having said that, I can understand why others don't like it and find it boring, but I love it. I've seen it so many times, though, that often when I put it on, I use it to help put me to sleep for a nice afternoon nap!
By the way, the Blu-ray of 2001 is probably the best classic film out there. I only wish POTA was as good on Blu-ray as 2001 is.
My third favorite films these days.... "The Sand Pebbles" with Steve McQueen. Got something negative to say about that one, John?

You want an analogy.... POTA is a Western. 2001 is an attraction you'd see at the Museum of Natural History.

The point of this post is looking around the site and seeing the accolades for 2001 A space odessey. I was their in 1968 and after, and never could find two people who liked the film or two critics who liked or agreed (though I never cared for critics), but in those days they were much more educated and knew film. My point is only scholastics and pardon my wording, nerds who were in love with astronomy and some burnt out hippies ever gave it a thumbs up. I still cannot find many people who have a real love for the film ,like fans do of Apes that it astounds me that it is mostly preferable to Apes as science fiction dogma, or where science fiction got adult. I have the film and like it to a degree that it is ambiguous and thought provoking, but it is boring. If not for the going through the great beyond and its light
show to wake you up., its a rather tedious excersise and highly subjective of meaning.Who knows mayby I dont get it? John m

You saw it at the Hicksville Twin also?!!! What a small world. I doubt that theatre is still there, but it might be. I saw "Star Wars" there too in '77. It was one of only two or three cinemas on the Island that could show Cinerama.

But seriously everyone, the purpose of this group is to discuss POTA. Dicussing other films in relation to POTA is ok but lately too many threads have deviated too far from that. If you want to discuss Avatar, the films of Kevin Smith, 2001: A Space Odyssey or anything else unrelated to POTA, there are plenty of other groups and forums where you can do that.

James, you need to relax. It's pretty obvious I'm joking around -- and having a good time doing it (see screen capture in other post).
Why are you such a spoiler, James? And I think that talking -- a little -- about other things doesn't do any harm here. Isn't this a Yahoo group for people who love POTA, not a Yahoo group about only POTA all the time?
Also, for me, POTA and 2001 are almost like that (holding two fingers crossed together).

I can understand why some consider "2001"
like watching paint dry. But also remember back in the day those FX were
incredible. Ten years before "Star Wars". And it's science-fiction as "art".
Rare indeed. I find it interesting that "2001" and POTA came out so close
together (the ape theme, the lobotomy of a character - - Landon and HAL, the way
both lead to a destination with Man's superior, though in POTA it's toward the
apes, in 2001 it's away from). Both are "mind-bending" sci-fi movies dealing
with the big issues.
Usually I flip to favorite scenes rather
than watch th whole thing; but I plan to on December 31st, and then on Jan. 1st
I'll watch it's sequel "2010". Why? I can't imagine!
Since it's "Avatar" week, I'll add that James
Cameron wanted "2010" director Peter Hyams to direct the POTA he was going to
write and produce 10 years ago (starring Ah-nuld with apes by Stan Winston,
RIP). Fox decided to go in a different direction.

And the problem is not any single post but the recent high number of off topic threads. One long time member recently left. When I emailed him to ask why, he said it is because we hardly discuss POTA anymore.
Last week Rich and Hunter posted scripts for planned POTA comics that were never realized because Mavel discontinued the POTA Magazine. Yet hardly anyone commented. Again to people who have gone out of their way to contribute, it puts them off.
In the past year in this group we featured several projects including a recontruction of Escape's original pre-title sequence on the group website, the one sheet series to celebrate the anniversay of the TV series and weekly features such as a comic adaption of Boule's novel & Ape City Chronicles. All of these represent the hard work of several people who have donated their time for free. Yet while I have personally received comments from members about of these privately (both positive and negative but mostly positive), there has been silence here. I asked why they were reluctant to comment here in the group and the response was that they felt a lack of interest in the group with discussing such things.
And let's not forget Broken Sea's Audio adaption of Beneath just began and next year a new POTA illustrated novel is being published, so it is not like that there is a lack of POTA related topics that can be discussed.
The focus of this group is POTA and nothing else. Our group guidelines, which have been in effect for over five years state this very clearly: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/PostingGuidelines.htm. I suggest that everyone read them because from this moment on they are going to be strictly enforced.

Dessicated Stewie?
Or ought that to be Jessicated? Ha! See what I did!
Jessica, I've been following your progress since you began sculpting over on the Sideshow forum and I've watched your talent grow in leaps and bounds.
My only criticism - and it's purely a selfish one - is that, as good as your sculpts are, they are, perhaps, of limited use to any of us who do not collect 1/6th scale action figures. I have Ada's Brent sculpt, all fully painted up and, it has to be said, looking a bit silly on my model shelf with nothing beneath the neck.
If you were to sculpt a variant that includes an upper chest too, making them true busts, I think you might corner a wider gap in the market. I was reading the editorial in 'Amazing Figure Modeler' and the editor states that busts have now become more popular than full-figure kits.
You could even get away with just painting them Bronze!
Amazing work, Jess, keep it up. I love seeing each new masterpiece.

'Escape from Tommorrow' is second, it is the episode that is most like the movies.
And 'The Trap' is third.
I am surprized 'The Interrogation' didn't get more votes with all the Wanda fans out there.

I do not know about the busts & chests instead of the 1/6 scale figures, I think that nothing really compares to having a figure of the character itself. The real clothes, a good likeness and the option of posability really do it for me. I think we are on the threshold here of upscale kit-bashing. When Jessica is able to make reproductions of these sculpts to sell, I believe that we will have figures that would otherwise never be made. That being said, this is just one person's opinion and I do not know your appreciation of the busts, it is just not my cup of tea.

The coolest thing about it was a piece of plastic that was molded to look like a patch of dirt with tire tracks and had a spring loaded piece that would turn over a toy jeep when it rolled over it as if from an explosion.

OK, so you've mentioned *every* single demographic group except the
one I was referring to: the people that grew up watching it. Most of whom
have devices to record programs when they're not home.
As far as WABC, I doubt there's anyone working there who even knows what
The 4:30 Movie was. Above and beyond which, expecting a television station to do
something intelligent nowadays is just about pointless.
As to why people who fondly remember such things would record The 4:30
Movie if it were broadcast again, all I can say is that if I have to start
explaining the value/strength of nostalgia to those who actually
experienced the original, I'm clearly in the wrong place.
Chris L.
>>If there was a
guaranteed ratings spike, WABC would have done it already. The demographics of
the available audience in that daypart most likely wouldn't be interested in
seeing that old 4:30 Movie. Since the 4:30 Movie went off the air 28 years ago,
elementary, high school and even college age kids home at that time, don't
remember it so there is no nostalgia factor for them. And why would they want to
see cut up versions of old movies when they can catch them uncut on cable or
buy/rent the DVD or download it from NetFlix? Women would probably rather watch
Oprah or Tyra or Ellen. And since the 4:30 Movie only started in 1968, the
generation that grew up with it hasn't started to retire yet. So most current
Retired Adults wouldn't really have a nostagia factor for it either.

Is that necessarily a bad thing though? If it weren't for the telemovies,
no one would have seen the TV series (in any format) for almost 20 years
until the Sci-Fi Channel picked it up. And although there are certainly some who
would argue *for* that, there's a lot of fans who appreciated the opportunity to
see them again. Remember, the 80's was the dryest decade for apes fans.
The only significant thing that happened was the five films getting
released in Hi-Fi on Playhouse Video. Not much to hang your hat on.
Chris L.
>>I don't think I ever said that anyone felt lied to or betrayed but
I wouldn't bet that there were absolutely no viewers who may have felt that way.
But that is a diversion from the main point anyway. Which is that FOX created
the TV Movies to milk every last drop of money out of the POTA franchise.

I'll have to check it out, but it's hard to justify that $10 price tag
sometimes. Admittedly, it's a very packed magazine as far as content goes
though.
Give a shout if they cover 1970. I'd definitely be interested in their take
on BENEATH considering how heavily edited the film was during it's initial
theatrical run over in the UK (as well as when the film made it to television).
And for those of you who don't know what I'm referring to:
"A heavily edited version of the film was shown on British television
c.1991 which excised most of the violent and horrific scenes, most notably from
the last third of the film, including both scenes where Brent is forced to
attack Nova, the revelation of the underground humans true appearance, the fight
Brent & Taylor are forced to have in the prison cell, the killing of the
mutant guard on a spiked door, and much of the shoot-out at the film's climax.
This was identical to the original BBFC-cut cinema version. All UK video and DVD
releases are upgraded to a '15' certificate and feature the fully uncut
version."
(from the IMDB)
It'd be interesting to hear from one of the UK members if they remember any
of this. Also, was 1991 the first time the Apes films made it onto television
over there?
Chris L.
John (again):
