.html OK, so there's a new "Apes" movie coming in about 4 months. Based on what I've heard I think I will like it. Yeah, yeah, it's Fox. Yeah, yeah, it's CG. A CG POTA is like landing men on the moon. It's unnatural. They do that and God will send a plague of locusts to that studio. Right, Bernice?
Obviously I can't vouch for the movie yet. Probably at this point even the director doesn't know for sure what the final version will be like. But I have a good feeling based on the people involved, based on what I've heard so far and based on the outcry that accompanied the last one.
But even if it is a good movie, that doesn't mean it will please all POTA fundamentalists, especially those that weren't into "Escape". Because that's what it will probably be like. A chamber drama on the Planet of the Humans. And that's pretty risky. No apes with guns or clothes, no "conquest". But if things go right maybe a look into the human condition like we enjoyed in the originals. Is that enough? <.html

I want a screen accurate one. I'm going to sculpt it, make a mold and cast it in resin--line it and cover it up with gun metal leather.

It's Cinemacon, formerly known as Showest, and we may get a "Rise of the Apes" poster image or description of a trailer out of it. After all, it's coming out in 4 months.
NATO is also part of POTA history, since Arthur Jacobs did special compilations of footage for "Planet" and "Beneath" for them, including stuff that wound up not being in the movies. I believe the "Planet" one is on the DVD, maybe the blu-ray as well.

I have to admit that Escape is my favourite of the sequels, so would be content if Rise aped it to some degree (sorry for the pun, our simian overlords). I know it comes with the going back in time thing that I tend to dislike (no problem with the "going forward in time", because it's not really going forward in a time travel sense in Apes), I know it does delve into the whimsical now and then, and that the gorilla in the cage does stink it up a bit, but I still like the overall nature of the story, the further development of the characters, the change from fun to tragedy, and the showing that not everyone is black-and-white in nature (even Hasslein has his virtues). It also holds a place in my heart of being the first film that I got to see in the cinema without the need for an adult to accompany me. So, if Rise was anything like Escape, this fan would be good with it.
Despite my cynicism, I do hope that Rise actually shows that you can create a solid film that'll be a worthy sequel/reboot/re-imagining/retelling/whatever. It doesn't have to be an action movie, in fact I'd prefer it not to go too far down that route, if at all. I'd rather it delves into the nature and weaknesses of man, the exploration of non-human sapience and its evolution, the struggle between the sapient species, any similarities and empathy between the species, the nature of injustice and compassion, etc. However, I tend to think it's more likely that the film will pander to action than go too deep into the philosophical nature of such things. Still, I hope my cynicism is mistaken.

My first complaint about this movie is..... They go to all the expense of CGI to create a "photo-realistic ape," then they give him human eyes! Not very realistic.

Looks interesting. They've gone with human eyes rather than chimpanzee ones (large amount of sclera and the eye shape). Explainable due to genetic manipulation I suppose. No problem with that and actually am glad. It also helps us mere humans better understand the emotions and glances of the ape, etc, and such eyes further encourage empathy.

I don't have a problem if it can be explained due to genetic manipulation. I suppose they could have waited for any sequel and further genetic change before they went with such eyes, though, but I'm OK with it. I suppose they wanted to increase the empathy and communication that human eyes can attract.

I remember that Rick Baker said once (or maybe several times) that he was thinking of retiring just before POTA2001, because CGI was making his creative makeup thing obsolete. Well, it's been a decade since then, and while prosthetics aren't quite obsolete -- they might as well be.

Well, despite the eyes, there is the problem with the differing proportions between a chimpanzee body and that of a human. If you're going to have a body that's similar to a chimpanzee, then it's a bit of an issue to have an actor in a suit, because of the proportions difference. CGI would help on that score, as loath as I'm to admit that (I really want actors in make-up, but understand that sometimes CGI might be easier and better under certain circumstances). Still, the eyes being very humanistic does make one wonder how human the rest of the ape is going to be, considering that there's been some genetic manipulation that seems to have created humanistic eyes. I mean, surely there can't be too many changes in the first film, seeing that this is the start of the story, and any changes towards a more humanoid look will come later, it at all.

I just hope the movie doesn't follow suit and is exactly what I expect it it to be. Studios.Buy it regularly and get your comicbook shop to stock it.Comics sales have declined by over 20% in the past year and it's a tough, tough marketplace out there.A successful Apes comic will be noticed and will help promote interest and other products.Let's get behind the new comic and ensure that we have a continuing Apes saga to enjoy over the coming years.$3.99 is not a lot to support the Ape Cause.John, Scrolls. --- In pota@yahoogroups.com, "rassmguy" <handleyr@...> wrote: > > Hi, folks. Using the article as a barometerer, the comic might have a "Marvel" storyline to it but the artwork reminds me of Malibu. It sounds like a fun read.

.html I think they are trying pretty hard to get the original "Ape" fans to like it, from names to certain dialogue (from the script I read) to the ape look. Maybe they are trying too hard but we'll see. Just as with the new "Star Trek", lots of references.
Obviously there's not much to go on yet. What I'm worried about is making Caesar's evolution believable. He seems to evolve over the course of the film (though it takes years). It should take more time to evolve like that but it could work depending on how believable Franco and his science is.

Well I went and had myself a look and was a little concerned that the CGI Caesar kind of looks exactly how I expected him to! (what little I can see of him) I'm not saying he looks bad, quite the opposite, I think he looks bloody good - it's just that I felt no surprise or 'Gosh, wow! They really knocked that one out of the park!'
I just hope the movie doesn't follow suit and is exactly what I expect it it to be. I'm predicting an entertaining couple of hours in the cinema that will be all but forgotten about come the next morning. Which, I have to admit, is better that a mind numbing couple of hours that haunt me still... Yes, I'm talking Burton.

Maybe it'll evolve into that look or something approximating it over time. It'd be a bit odd for an ape to change that quick in one leap. Actually, I don't mind the more ape-looking nose at all.
Heh, I've been a bit sceptical about the coming film, so it's a bit odd that I'm sort of backing it.

A lot of the preliminary writeups/promotion for the new comics say:
"They're tying the new title into the continuity of the five classic films"...
If this is so, how come most of the covers we've seen so far are illustrated with apes dressed in clothing that's anything but tied in with the look/style of the original films?

But we're also setting this in a time period that's never been seen before. So while you'll see some styles that look like ape clothing from the the 3900's, there are obviously going to be styles that are different in 2680. It's a balancing act, to be sure.

If they're taking such drastic changes with their clothing, I can only guess the content will be equally different. If such major changes are being done, wouldn't they have been better off saying it's all new (i.e. "new story", "new look")? To make such big alterations and yet say it's "in the continuity of the originals" probably isn't going to sit well with a lot of people, so why call it what it doesn't appear to be?

.htmlHiya, Rich,
Well, at least two characters call him "Grandfather"! As for his name, I'm not telling. Maybe because I haven't decided on it yet. I have a name in the series bible I'm creating to keep track of everything, but I'm not in love with it. Since I didn't need it in issue #1, so I decided to wait for a name I really like.
As for characterization, I'm going with John Huston as my guide, and he's definitely the character we met at the end of BATTLE. He believes in equality between apes and humans.

.htmlPlease, call me Daryl.
I'm avoiding those comics _because_ they're excellent! At least, that's what I have to assume. If they're great, then I don't want their fabulous ideas to creep into my stories, or worse, drive me to despair that I'll ever come up with something that good.
Well, that's a half-joking answer. The serious answer is that at some point I would like to go read them. But when I was creating the storyline for this series, I decided to concentrate on just the five movies, and re-imagine from there. The best way to do that, I thought, was to immerse myself in those movies, and nothing but.

I agree with your observation. The ape in question, Caesar, could be in a begining or middle stage of transformation. They at Fox really have no idea at what and why the Apes are popular. We all moan and groan and write letters make phone calls talk on chatboards, etc., and they at Fox do whatever they want. I cant tell who are the bigger fools, us or them. I did my incredibly over the top share of optomistic whining and crying to the point where Fox invited me for a trip to L.A. to discuss why the laserdiscs were bad. It was sparked by my letter printed in "The Pefect Vision", a friend who shall remain nameless who has/had 4 track audio stems of all the sequels and a first mixdown in mono from POTA. He had a movieola of somekind and made me cassettes that are long gone and they were fabulous. He was what you would call in record collecting as a guy who gets bootlegs from a highup employee at certain film or audio studios. The Apes films were
kept mostly at RCA music at that time in the mid-eighties. The sequels were all done multi miked on site( their are some good photos of Conquest with two mikes on site, some are even on your photo sections in BxW) also a few articles from some of the older and recent posters on this website .I got a phone call FROM Bart Pierce to my home phone in 1992. They as much as anything in life has made me a terrible cynic. The look of the original apes is probably the main reason that most folks think they are cool looking. If they dont go with a more human bridge nose and hairdoo it will just be a Burton remake(in looks anyway). The apes in Burtons movie were done very well but it just doesnt sit well with me in that if you evolve into something more human your facial features should change too, wouldnt it? Shoudnt it?
Im surprised and dissapointed that they would show what they feel is a major accomplishment. This chimp looks like Thade not Caesar and if Fox wants to keep a distance from the Burton fiasco why show something that looks just like it. If they dont evolve or change what the heck was all the CGI for, jumping around made by a computer. Big deal!
Sorry for going all over the place but my point is Fox and almost everyone involved with a business that has to show profit to shareholders are liers by nessesity and stuborn as all heck if you point something out or have an opinion that goes against their grain. They will do what they want with the Apes because they could. I bet half the people on this website could right a great screenplay (I did for my thesis at NYU on a possible sixthed Apes film and documentary with all the storyboards and photos for my writing for film media course) and if I could get a 4.0, a 21 year old kid, why cant Fox find just one knoweledable person on apes instead of employees and hacks.
I wont be posting much anymore but when I do it will be long. Take care, John M.

Because I saw the movies when I was young, I think I developed a huge crush on Kim Hunter. Her performance, especially in ESCAPE, is so heartfelt, and the way she works with Roddy MacDowall is just beautiful. And Roddy! I keep his performance in CONQUEST in mind.
But I also think about one of the scariest film moments in my life, watching BENEATH when I was ten. When the mutants pulled off their faces, I almost jumped out of _my_ skin.

Thanks for being so welcoming to Daryl and there have been a ton of great questions today.
I just wanted to chime in that the best way to TRULY get behind the APES comic book is to contact your local comic book shop and PRE-ORDER the the comic from them.
To find out where your local comic shop is located, please go to http://www.comicshoplocator.com and plug in your zip code. Calling them up and pre-ordering the book shows comic shop retailers what the demand is for the book and they will place more orders. The order code to reference with retailers for pre-order is FEB110852.
Again, thanks for being such a great fan base, and we hope to deliver to you the best PLANET OF THE APES possible.

.htmlYes I agree, it looks more like thade. The look of the original Plante of the Apes is incredible to say the least. The nose, large brow over the eys, chin, hair ..perfection.They could have done an updated version with cgi and it would have looked great. We can all se a regular Ape with King kong and any other monkey movie out there.I agree Burton's makeup was ok, but nothing compared to the early films NOTHING !.
If you got that far with your letter, please inform them about the look of Caesar and how it should look like the original Apes.Maybe you can hlep get through to them.Oh man what I would do to get to see one more amazing Planet of the apes movie that looked like the original Apes.Wish I was in charge of fox. Thanks for your great message.

The Apes films were kept mostly at RCA music at
that time in the mid-eighties.

All those comics are so old. Even the Adventure
stuff is 20 years old. New fans shouldn't have to track that stuff down. I think
it's smart to just stick with the films.

But when I was creating the storyline for this series, I decided to concentrate on just the five movies, and re-imagine from there. The best way to do that, I thought, was to immerse myself in those movies, and nothing but.

I was at work while this was going on, but I would have encouraged him to read the Boulle novel too --- just as background. Perhaps he has?

Obviously the first photo of the new Caesar has
caused some controversy. Some people seem to love it, others hate it. I love it.
How much do I love thee?
1) like a summer rain
2) like a kind word from a stranger
3) like a warm puppy at
midnight
We can only see a small portion but it looks to
me like they are going for a realistic version of the Chambers makeup. Look at
the edges on this blowup:
Looks like Thade you say? So be it. Baker also
attempted realistic apes. We love the original makeups but that was 40 years
ago. It's time to let the new artists make their mark. To expect it to look
exactly the same as 40 years ago is unrealistic. But it looks to me like
they are trying to give a nod to the originals and I love that idea (though I
could be wrong when the whole thing is revealed). I really thought it would be
like the new King Kong where they'd be an ape's ape.
I'd rather keep the originals separate. Most of
those who worked on them are gone. Is it fair to use the look John Chambers
designed when he's almost ten years gone? We've got 5 movies and a TV show to
enjoy whenever we want so vive la difference!

I appreciate your kind thoughts of any influence that I can wave. I talked with many big wigs at Fox as did a few of other guys here at this site and like I said they just do not get it. You show them the sky is blue they will awear its red. It was a very hummiliating and frustrating to deal with them. I practically got a friend put in jail by Fox but luckily I sent them somewhere else. I had told The video heads about where, at that time, great audio could be found but they never persude it. They dont like it if the regular public tries to help them. So weve been stuck with inferior sound for 40 years. Fox went on their own (for Beneath because of a poorly synced sound effects track) and found a sountrack in Spain of all places and till this day even on the bluray the sound effects track is off. Watch Beneath on HBO/Cinemax and Beneath is perfect like it was when I started with them 20 years ago.
My point is they do not listen to any criticism from fans unsolicited including this new film. Jeff Vettus on this site knows more about this new Apes movie and whats going on. I had phone conversations and I talked to Natalie Trundy because of him so he knows where its at now. Thanks again and take care, John M.

.htmlTotally agree John. We want human nose-bridges! And all that jumping around looks fake to me anyway. It's either computer generated or obviously wire-rigged fakery. Caesar was strictly pavement. And when he did climb up a tree he brought it old-school human-style.
I'd love to read that thesis.
