.html.html that would be 1911 ad and there wasnt any yet, even though it was being considered in the house, it wasnt established as an act of congress to be taken until 1913.
and it is a statute punishable by imprisonment if failure to comply with congress's wishes is committed.
they didnt want people being shot over failure to pay on time if the crop didnt come in or they were a few dollars short over income tax, that is why it isnt a law but is a requirement by statute as an act of congress. another act of congress is the declaration of war. you can be taken out and shot with no trial if found to be a spy or a traitor. that shows how powerful an act of congress can be.
jim
? Here's a trivia question for anyone who might want to take a swing at it: What was the USA's federal income tax rate a century ago?
Have a great weekend... :-)

.html Does anyone have a drawing, photo, or some other image of the Icarus as it was very briefly seen in Rise of the Planet of the Apes? It looked to me at first glance very much like a conventional space shuttle. Then I got the impression of something more triangular like the X-33 "Venture Star" single stage to orbit vehicle attached to conventional shuttle boosters and main tank.

I already said it's going to be here Nov. 8th. That's my birthday. "X-Men: FC" hit theaters in early June and it hits blu-ray today so that's 3 months exactly. That's the way Fox rolls.
Found out yesterday that TORA! TORA! TORA! goes Blu-ray (and Blu-ray Book) on December 6, 2011.
Just sayin.

There's "Rise", "Contagion" and "Rise 2". Mojo predicts "Contagion" will be # 1, dethroning "The Help", then the new flick "The Warrior", "The Debt" and "Rise". We'll see.

Please notice how long that list actually is. Approximately 300 new releases come out of Hollywood each year (while at least half really do lose money, if I'm remembering correctly).
Now then, might anyone here already know in what place POTA2001 finished in 2001? Here's the answer:

If only we could see a list of 1968's top performers :-) Perhaps someone here knows of one?
Anyhow, Rise is doing better globally than domestically, which doesn't happen too often:

I have to credit our group and especially its manager(s) for helping to make Rise happen, and succeed. Ripple effects can be more significant than one realizes when one makes waves. And this group has collectively helped make a splash year-after-year.

The only misery I've experienced is that Burton fiasco, but back last century, before POTA's 30th Anniversary, I sure felt APES got the crappy end of the stick from Fox. Now look at its position at the studio. Who'd have thunk it?
I sure hope there's a new remastered Blu-ray of the original when RISE comes out. I'd feel a lot better knowing PLANET is now looking its best.
I don't know about RISE coming out on Blu-ray by November though. Doesn't it open in Japan in October? I would imagine that Fox will want to milk as much as they can out of the theatrical showings, though they sure have put X-MEN: FIRST CLASS out fast, but maybe that movie doesn't have the legs RISE seems to have?

"X-Men: First Class" is still in theaters and
it's on DVD. The idea is to put movies on DVD faster so they benefit from the
hype of the theatrical release in selling DVDs. By November "Rise" will be
pretty much done in theaters and if they put it out in early November they can
catch the early Christmas shoppers. November 8th. ; )

Yeah, that's what it looked like. It also gives
them an out if they decide it's not Taylor's ship (Taylor is never mentioned,
just Icarus, which has no meaning in the actual films). But some of the set
visits said that they did have designs for doing Taylor's actual ship. I guess
they decided not to, or didn't film that stuff because of budget.

This weekend "Rise of the POTA" will overtake
Fox's latest entry in the "X-Men" franchise, "First Class" (which incidentally
hit DVD this weekend). "Rise" and FC were comparable given they are both
prequel/reboots done by Fox and both had the level playing field of not being
released in 3D. "X-Men" has been a long term franchise for Fox. But if "Rise"
makes it to $ 500 million worldwide it will beat all the entries. Here's where
they sit, though not adjusted for inflation:
"X-Men 3" (2006): $459 million
worldwide
"X-Men 2" (2003): $407 million
worldwide
"Wolverine" (2009): $373 million
worldwide
"First Class" (2011): $352 million
worldwide
"Rise" (2011): $350 million worldwide
"X-Men 1"(2000): $296 million
worldwide
Just saying!

.htmlAgree!. What was the reason except to honor for special screenings of POTA68 the Film restoration-(Sound still wasnt talked about much from that restoration house and to me thats where POTA68 is lacking most)-if not for bluray transfers and make some more money for Fox. I ofcourse would like to see them all restored film wise and with the money Rise made and the perceived money any sequels will make it should be done, by the way the isolated scores are the ones that should of been used for the movie elements on the bluray, they have no reverb esp, Conquest and are powerfull sounding.
Over at Heritage auctions where I talk with some buyers and sellers about my posters lobbies blackand whites etc. prices have gone through the roof since the Rise sucsess. For all ape products not just POTA68. I have almost every size shape poster and every lobby in two sizes, blah, blah and I wanted to know what they would give me. I dont want to piece meal my collection- its all or nothing- so my position is tenuous. They want me to mail them my collection or make photos of all I got and put them on consignment, give me a break that would take all year for me to do even if I still had the equipment and computer know how. I just said rather silly, send a person up to new york take the price of the airplane off of what you would offer and lets deal. My stuff is perfect, no pin holes creases except folds from National screen service, corners perfect etc, in other words perfect A-1.
Pota68 one sheet is SOLD for about 750-1100 at Heritage BEFORE Rise now the prices are around 1700-2000 dollars SOLD. My collection through no great investment strategy just love of Apes is worth at the Sold price about 60 grand now atleast and because of retirement and medical, I would sell for about 30-40 grand. They would offer about at last talking 15 grand. They want huge profits and I feel I just want a fair market price.
The reason for this collection talk was not to brag at all, their are people here and other places that have much fuller -dolls etc- collections but to show what a good movie in a tired franchise can do for your collections. I dont want to sell but the cost of living might make me think again. I wanted to give it to my son when I pass.
Anyway thanks for letting me go on again and waste bytes of space, John M.

Somewhere in the universe I have something I clipped from a 1969 World Almanac that listed the top grossers of '68, but my recollection is pretty close to what you got from Wiki.
By the way, according to Box Office Mojo, the domestic gross for PLANET, not adjusted for inflation, but what it's accumulated in the past 43 years, is $32,589,624. Worldwide gross is not available from Fox.
By comparison, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is $56,954,992.
BULLITT is not available, but I've read elsewhere that it's suspected to be up near $100 Mill! FUNNY GIRL is now over $52 Million. Information on ROSEMARY'S BABY is not available, but I'll bet it's in the $50 Mill range.

What you talkin' 'bout?!!!!
I saw PLANET in a 1969 reissue, again in a 1971 reissue (with BENEATH), it was reissued in 1973 with BATTLE and other APES sequels, and then as the "Go Ape" reissue in 1974.

Personally I dont believe much of these statistics. One Jerry Anderson who started my love of Conquest by sending me 19 Black and white stills talked to my father at length in 1973 just before he was fired or moved and he had told my father that numbers are lots of crap-his word- and studios pad deduct do whatever they have to by tax time. Its not done on such a vile level and most of those numbers are close but what he told my father in Febuary 1973 that the 4 apes films so far have grossed in North America about 65 million and then talking to other people I got to know at Fox during my college years have the Apes films after the two Go Apes fest of 1973(Unofficial) and 1974 had the total, around by the time they were sold to CBS, which could of been padded to make a good sale to the network, at about 155 million dollars North America. Their were re-releases, double bills, all types of combos and double features where you can if so inclined put the
monies with either feature. Its a very flexible numbers business, atleast at that time. Finnaly I was told that worldwide the original 5 Planet of the Apes films by 1976 made about 300 million worldwide without any inflation adjustments. These figures I believe because they were given to me back at the time with fresh memories and little good or bad motivations. Take care, John M.

These were the years that hollywood was dying but these totals adjusted for inflation or not would be the equivalent of today atleast. Like I posted figures before the mid 70s are peculiar and questionable. John M.

Like Lucy, they've got some 'splaining to do. There's also that "Apocalypse" enigma that they guess is an epilogue thingy, maybe a motion comic (BOOM?). I reckon the official announcement will be soon.

.html5oo million seems alittle tough to reach. Japan as I see it is the last big market. The rest will be money from exsisting venues and that will slowely dry up by November the latest I would assume. Who knows?
By the way I was on a site ,sorry forgot, and it said the box set bluray of the POTA set of 2008 sold about 40,000 units as of august at an average price(remeber prices around the world are much higher)of 150 dollars for the box set becomes a 4.5 million dollar take. Not including individual Blurays, DVD, DVD Box sets. I guess thats good. I hope that restored POTA68 gets a bluray treatment . Box it with Rise as a two Pack. Anyway I thought Id pass it along. .htmlIt's a curious situation that "Rise of the POTA" has had a great run but has been dogged by two films for weeks now. On the foreign front, "The Smurfs" has been # 1 and "Rise" # 2 for 5 weeks straight.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3271&p=.htm
"Smurfs" has racked up $321 million on foreign shores while "Rise" is at $206 million. How dare they! If I saw a Smurf I would step on it! I don't care if it made my shoe blue.
Meanwhile, back home on the domestic front, "Rise" ($167 million) has made the Smurfs ($136 million) black and blue (but mostly blue) but of course has had to do si dough with "The Help" ($137 million) for weeks until recently. The $25 million budgeted "Help" might even outdo "Rise" in the U.S. (overseas so far it's done $3 million in it's limited release).
Of the 3, "Rise" is still king of the jungle in the U.S. but the foreign take of the little guys has given "The Smurfs" a hefty $457 million worldwide. "Rise" is at $374 million. Did I mention I hate Smurfs?
In short, those two films have been the Smurf in the ointment that have screwed with the late summer conquest of the POTA. <.html

.htmlRise may have only cost $93 million to produce:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=riseoftheapes.htm
but marketing expenditures apparently were considerably more. I've done a cursory search on the internet for the figure tonight, and I turned up empty-handed. But I recall seeing here weeks ago that marketing costs were tens of millions more (maybe almost $50m)? Meanwhile, theaters keep a higher percentage, apparently as the weeks proceed. So I'm not yet relaxing regarding Rise's profitability. However, DVD sales & rentals could be good. At least for Rocky Balboa, such revenues were substantial:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=homevideo&id=rocky6.htm
I don't think we can count on BoxOfficeMojo's reporting too well about DVD rentals and sales this winter, though. That's not its focus.
Fingers crossed in Houston...

.htmlAll these money figures have got me looking back to a much simplier time. Back in 72 when I saw Conquest at the Brentwood Theater Long Island NY in late summer it was "companioned featered" with "The Hot Rock". That was a great caper film with Robert Redford and George Segal, Zero Mostel and many other great NY character actors. Conquest was backed by an adult movie and I remember the audience filled with older customer atleast 60+ enjoying both films immensely. Just watching the Hot Rock on cable and it bought back great memmories. Apes always had a large adult audience. Shame that Battle and the TV series dumbed it down and the Apes almost never recovered. Take care, John M." Afgahnistan Bananastand" from The Hot Rock 1972....

.htmlFox does not put out any merchandizing themselves. They only sell the
licenses to the companies that do put out the goodies. So, in effect,
they cannot 'lose' anything and will always make some money regardless
if the product was successful or not. But when sales are not good, there
is a backlash from the producers who get burned. They ones that put out
2001 merchandise generally did lose money and you can bet that they were
not standing in line to get licensing this time around. And word gets
around in the industry as to what was or was not successful, so even
companies that did not get on the POTA 2001 wagon know that sales were
not good. So indirectly Fox is impacted by the loss of future licensing
prospects.
I'm kind of interested to see now that the movie was a success what
merchandise if any will be produced. So far, it looks bare.

New Partnership Will Lower 2D-3D Conversion Costs for Feature Films.
This is mind blowing.
"Prices for converting 2D material to 3D (2 layer 3D) will begin at $1.5 million for a full-length feature film."
"Iconic films such as the Star Wars series have opted for by-hand conversion, but at costs estimated to be between US $50,000 and US $80,000 per minute."
That's around $10 million per Star Wars movie. $80,000 X 120 minutes = 9.6 million.
Do you know how much Lucas is going to make on each 3D Star Wars film once released in theaters and 3D Bluray? About a hundered time what it will cost him to convert these films. That's mind blowing!
I only hope more movie studios catch on to this. It would be great to see the original Planet of the Apes Movies in 3D. And at only 1.5 million per movie (2 layer 3D), Fox will end up making ten time that amount on a 3D Bluray release. 2 layer 3D looks really great. It's what they used for 'Clash of the Titans', and in my opinion, Clash looks great in 3D dispite what some Cameron Disiples (lol) said. I know, I have it. The movie itself just wasn't all that great but still really good in 3D.
Movie studios these days are sitting on a gold mine.
I'm not buying the Star Wars Blurays this week. Instead I'm waiting for the 3D Blurays next year. And most likely it'll be both Bluray 2D and 3D combos.
Cable TV shows Star Wars in HD 24/7 these days so it's not as though I'll be missing anything. Only maybe 400 hours of behind the scenes features, and a few deleted scenes which will most likely endup on YouTube. Not enough for me to spend $100 bucks for. But for 3D, hell yeah.

Bleeding Cool did some digging and found out there will be two commentaries when "Rise" hits DVD, one from the director and one from the writers (Fox's other prequel "X-Men: First Class" didn't have any commentaries). Like Lucy, they've got some 'splaining to do. There's also that "Apocalypse" enigma that they guess is an epilogue thingy, maybe a motion comic (BOOM?). I reckon the official announcement will be soon.

But I recall seeing here weeks ago that marketing costs were tens of millions

profitability. However, DVD sales & rentals could be good. At least for
Rocky Balboa, such revenues were substantial:

South Korea has less than half of Japan's population, but a comparable amount of per capita income and love of technology.
Incidentally, I bet the Japanese will welcome the sense of armageddon's emerging NOT from nuclear bombings but instead from the biotech realm. It's more conducive to escapism for those comparatively nuclear-ravaged folks... Terminator 2 disturbed some from there, to give you an idea.

I was wondering if, just possibly, it might contain the version of The Interrogation that Bill Blake was in.He was getting residuals in the 70s and the suggestion is that his version might have been shown in Europe. It's a longshot, but maybe it's in the archive? .html People seem surprised by how far "Rise of the POTA" has traveled on the box office road but it's interesting who it meets on the journey. "Rise" isn't even Freida Pinto's biggest hit yet. That would be Fox's "Slumdog Millionaire", which made $377 million worldwide. To date, "Rise" has made $374 million ww, so I guess it's about to reach another milestone. <.html

I should have been caught up in the drama of his treatment, but instead his vocal outcry of self awareness presented itself more like a scene from THE COLOR PURPLE with the excised expletive of "Bitch!" at the end. I don't want to even get into the whole, "Caesar home now." thing, and how the final tree scene looked more like the beginning of a video game. Or how James Franco has the kind of mouth that elicits a punch.

I just associated it to the plight the Black man has had in America but their would of been remarks like the guards questioning each other in Conquest when McDonald told them to knock it off and stop beating the chimp Aldo. .html.html Actually I did think it was James Earl Jones - in fact I was waiting for...."this is CNN". But on another level I hated the ending. It wasn't POTA. It was too happy. That isn't POTA. This was more akin to a Disney produced version of POTA. In fact, the music and all really was a through back to THE LION KING. All it needed was the African chorus.
That whole "Plight of the Black Man" thing is bull. Please, they have an entire continent to go back to and never have - except maybe when cameras are turned their way like Opra. Slavery originated from that continent and was more prominent among blacks, and their tribes then it ever was with whites. American whites are mostly European where they had surfs, but not slaves in the
sense of the word when compared to blacks. We learned it from them. My deceased brother was a historian and was married to a black woman. She would laugh at the stupidity of whites falling for "plight of the black man". Her family came from the South and made their money as slave traders - as they did on Africa before. Now that's something Opra and rest don't want most to know!
It's like, I've met and spoken with African Blacks and they laugh when they hear about Kwanzaa. (If they even have heard of it.) They know it's just a fake holiday with no real meaning. The best was when one said to me, "...a harvest festival in America - in the middle of winter!" They admit it has nothing to do with their culture. They would say what tribe does it come from. We didn't even know how to make candles. One even said, "my ancestors ate people, why should I be proud of
that!?!" Any way, the original POTA films always managed to end with a striking hard note - down, bleak. It was hard hitting with a terrible hint of the future. Even BATTLE seemed positive but left a question. The music wasn't happy - not even when the apes revolted in CONQUEST - either version. No, this film, even beyond the credits just didn't have that feeling. - Scott B.

.html.html there is a place in virginia named shanty town, if you go to the north eastern part of the state, and ask the police where to find it, you might be able to see what its all about.
it would help you with your perspective on slavery in a modern sense and the after affects. expecially if you wish to draw simularities with the aftermath of the ape revolution in the movies.
also you might want to check out los angeles in california, and the crack houses there, where dead bodies are thrown in the river daily, and also wrapped in old blankets and left in the dumpsters and streets.
after you do that little bit of investigation, then you would have a more educated report of ''the plight of the black man''.
you could also use brown shoe polish and dye your skin brown and try to get a job in your own neighborhood as something that pays more than minimum wage.
or is this just the kind of polite dinner table talk that you might find in buckinghamn palace about the common rabble that need to pull themselves up by thier own boot straps?
i thought this was a planet of the apes chat room.
except for some photos and stories, it seems to be a moneycounting and social commentary room.
