| Subject: Is POTA racist? If so, how so? |
.htmlThe hypersensitivity that some folks conveniently display whenever they think they can perceive a slight and get traction for calling it out doesn't help us advance the goal of boosting fan support for the Apes franchise.
Personally I don't see what's offensive about being compared to an ape. Don't we share at least 98% of the same DNA? I sure do wish that chimpanzees had refrained from so much domestic violence, though. That hurts the cause of those of us who want greater integration of simians into our human-dominated society. Chimps are so strong though...apparently much moreso than humans because of their elongated muscles and the way they're attached to their bones. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was brilliantly conceived, and involved a very fine job of casting of the pharmaceutical company director (who went on to portray Martin Luther King in Selma).
Anyhow the Apes franchise is accused of making whites look excessively oppressive. The water hoses used on Taylor were a deliberate take on hoses used to dispel violent crowds in Alabama during forced integration of institutions financed mostly by white taxpayers. Meanwhile Conquest of the POTA was a deliberate take on the Watts Riots of the 1960s, and the supposed need for such carnage in the name of liberation (to collect more subsidies paid for by largely white taxpayers). I think an analysis of POTA can be furthered by reading the following revelations about the history of slavery here in the USA: http://conservative-headlines.com/2012/03/americas-first-slave-owner-was-a-black-man/
Having said that, I think the franchise is on a fine track, don't you? There is much to be grateful about.

.html I do not see it that way at all . The humans are mixed races and the Apes are mixed Apes. If people look to deep into anything they can make something out of it. I agree not racist at all.Just a book and film for entertainment and I love it. <.html

That's an interestingly skewed view of American history (and
my post). If there's any convenient hypersensitivity,
it's not from me.
But yes, I think the franchise is doing well.

There will never be an agreed upon answer to
this. We are told blacks at the time saw their own situation in "Conquest" (as
mentioned in "Behind the POTA", and not just by Eric Greene). But then others
find it offensive to use POTA that way. David Oyelowo got raves for playing
Martin Luther King in "Selma" and didn't have a problem seeing a civil
rights allegory in "Rise of the POTA" (he played Jacobs).
I would guess POTA fans are generally not racist
because they are fans of what it had to say. But bozos will always have it handy
to use (as is well documented in Greene's book).

I don't think it matters until POTA reaches the
level of fandom that Star Wars has (probably never). I think really the only
reason Star Wars Day is so big is because it's catchy (May the 4rth be with
you). I don't believe there's a Star Trek Day or Dr. Who Day; if there is they
aren't as famous.
But my choice would be the day the original POTA
movie came out, Feb 8. That's the closest I get to a POTA Day. Or a big
anniversary.
Fun fact: the day "Dawn" had it's world premiere,
San Francisco dubbed it "POTA Day" (the premiere was there, the movie was set
there and they shot some there).

Wouldn't it
help if Planet of the Apes day:https://www.facebook.com/events/1621367448094156/ took place on
the day of an event that is revered or noticed among us fans? Any
suggestions? Star Wars has May the 4th (be with you) each year, in part
to commemorate the initial installment's magnificent release here in the USA.
I'm not aware of any independent significance of April 3rd as a fan day.
Meanwhile this mega-fan hardly noticed the passing of this year's POTA
day. :-(
How about the departure date of Colonel Taylor and
crew (which I believe was in late February)? Since it would seem that the
celebrations are mostly online, the indoor weather of February would seem likely
to boost interest. And if folks seek to dress up in commemoration, isn't
winter a better time than spring?
Food for thought from Houston...
:-)

I hope this wasn't posted in order to make some of us feel better about slavery in America, because it shouldn't, and what's been nearly as bad as the period of slavery was the century of Jim Crow that followed and the legacy of it all that we're still living with. There's pretty much nothing to feel good about. It's all an ugly aspect of human relations.
Is POTA racist? You have to go all the way back to the Boulle book and analyze that, and remember, it's a French novel, and France was a colonial country guilty of much oppression over those it imposed its rule over.

The hypersensitivity that some folks conveniently display whenever they think they can perceive a slight and get traction for calling it out doesn't help us advance the goal of boosting fan support for the Apes franchise.
I think an analysis of POTA can be furthered by reading the following revelations about the history of slavery here in the USA:
http://conservative-headlines.com/2012/03/americas-first-slave-owner-was-a-black-man/
Having said that, I think the franchise is on a fine track, don't you? There is much to be grateful a bout.

Yeah, I would believe that -- because it's absolutely correct. And I prefer April 3rd over February 8th only because it's usually so damn cold in early February. But, again, is this really that important?

I'm not aware of any independent significance of April 3rd as a fan day.
OK, it's been over 12 hours since I was last on the internet, and this is the first of a list of group postings I'm getting to, but we all know, don't we? (I mean, like it's common knowledge, isn't it -- and especially here?!!!!) That PLANET OF THE APES opened wide across the country on April 3, 1968.
April 3rd is a good day for National or International APES day, but I'm not married to it. I think, because the original APES movies are rather sun-baked, arid movies, that an APES day should be in either Spring or Summer. Maybe April 3rd is too early, but it does have APEril in the month.

But maybe it shouldn't be a set date every year. Maybe, since it will involve watching multiple movies and TV shows, which kind of requires a day off from work to have the freedom to do, it should be on Sunday, which most people have off from work, the Sunday before July 4th every year. So, this year it would be June 28th, but next year, 2016, it would be July 3rd, and in 2017 it would be on July 2nd, 2018 on July 1st, 2019 on June 30th, and so on.

And I'm not just saying that because February 8th is also my birthday.
OK, maybe just a bit because of that last fact.
P.S.: February 8th also happens to be my mom's birthday, be she doesn't really care when we celebrate Ape day.

I've been trying to piece together a tribute to
the late Booth Colman (Zauis on the TV show) but it's tough with a LONG career
of stage and bit parts. But I found this episode of "The Veil" that features
Booth, as well as host Boris Karloff. Booth was friends with Karloff and his
wife Evie (who met during Maurice Evans' production of "Hamlet" that Booth
played Guildenstern in; Boris was a backer, Evie was Maurice's assistant). This
show "The Veil" was made in 1958 by famed producer Hal Roach but wasn't
aired because there weren't enough episodes. A decade later it was made into
some TV movies. But it predates Karloff's more famous "Thriller". I've been
trying to scope out the highlights of Booth's career instead of just a laundry
list of credits.

A BENEATH Mutant would be cool, but I read somewhere that they're not planning any humans at this time, so that'd rule them out as well... As far as Zaius goes, I'd prefer they make a TV series Councilor Zaius (he'd go good with Urko).. Edward G. Robinson's Zaius, though only a tests make-up, really doesn't/wouldn't fit with the apes from the films or TV...

Cougar, you ignorant slut. Those that want to
build armies (personally I can't see it at $20 a pop) have the movie gorilla
figure and the Toyz-R-Us gorilla 2-pack. I'm a big fan of the TV show, it's what
introduced me to POTA, but the white stripes on the vests is silly. From what I
understand it was just done because TVs were smaller and pretty much sucked back
then (them there portable TVs). So it was done so people could say, "Oh, there's
a gorilla vest!". On the other hand, I welcome their Urko figure. Some might
consider him a poor man's Ursus but I dug Urko and still do. Given he had 14
hours of TV he is the best characterized POTA gorilla ever. Mark Lenard did a
great job of giving him subtle shades. So Urko, Julius and the TV show gorilla
(since he's already done). But that's it for gorillas.
As for the mutants, they aren't really human and
having one of them would work. You have the mutant (the "cool" factor that is
the driving force of figures)plus a human face to put on. I think conservative
buyers would go for that instead of yet another gorilla. Those like me who don't
want to spend a (CENSORED!) fortune would rather see a variety of figures.
Obviously I'm not NECA's preferred customer. They prefer the collectors
who want to build an ape army. But those collectors will buy anyway. To
make or break it, you need the choosy customers like me who say, "I already have
a gorilla. What's next?".
As far as the Edward G. Robinson Zaius, obviously
that won't happen but it would be cool if it did. For the fans who know the
history, that would be the perfect final figure. Booth Colman Zaius I would
love. Booth was my friend and I'm working on a tribute right now. But he's more
or less another Zaius and they've already put out two. Robinson Zauis is unique.
Maybe I'm wrong and people like to buy the same things over and over but if they
want my money it has to be more interesting.

Oh, as far as the ape-o-nauts, I'd go with Milo,
since NECA hasn't done that character yet. If they did Cornelius or Zira it
would feel incomplete without the other one. I don't think it's feasible to do
all 3 so go with Milo (unless they want to do a Toyz-R-Us 3 pack).

This week in Vegas is the splashy CinemaCon, in
which the studios court NATO (the National Association of Theater Owners). They
show footage from their biggies for the year and give hints about future movies.
Celebs and directors abound. Today Tom Cruise showed up (yes, THAT Tom Cruise!!)
stumping for "Mission: Impossible 5".
POTA has a history with NATO. Arthur Jacobs,
showman that he is, created special presentations for both POTA and "Beneath",
which included rare footage.
With the next POTA over two years away
obviously we're not going to get anything big but it would be groovy if they let
slip the title of Apes 3 so we don't have to call it, well, Apes 3. Jim
Gianopulos, the top banana at Fox, is slated to get the Pioneer Award tomorrow
(Ape-ril 22nd) and Fox's presentation is on Thursday.

Wouldn't Apes 9 be more correct? ;-) Based on the title of the first two films, the title of the new one could be: Mid-morning of the Planet of the Apes Brunch on the Planet of the Apes Sunrise of the Planet of the Apes <.html

painted original Addar models by Mike Rutherford, and Manuel Moreno
and Mark Talbot-Butler contributed scans of more recent Apes
cards, including the Inkworks Archives, Inkworks Autograph cards,
the Rittenhouse sets, and Argentinian TV series cards.
You can find them all---and lots more---on my Apes site:

Sad news that Andrew Lesnie has died of a
reported heart attack at 59. Probably he's best known as the creator of the
"WETA look", working with Peter Jackson on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy,
"King Kong" and recently on "The Hobbit" trilogy. That's probably the reason he
also did "Rise of the POTA", which rested on whether WETA's FX would work.
Lesnie's experience with them (and with Andy Serkis) probably gave some
confidence to the backers, and I felt "Rise" had a similar look to those Jackson
films. By "Dawn" they could breathe easier about the FX and a new director
brought on a new cinematographer.
Lesnie photographed some of the most beloved
epics of recent years and I think put his stamp on their visuals.
R.I.P.

Well, I finally got it. There's nothing about it I don't like. The sculpt could be a little better, but it's still pretty close to the original and I like it better than the Sideshow sculpt. That figure is in several sections that you can't glue together unless you never want to return it to its box. The Neca Lawgiver, on the other hand, is one solid piece and it's also colored more like the original. It's actually a better statue than the little prop Lawgiver statue used in the first film and first episode of the TV series. The box it comes in is nicely designed too, though I wish Fox would outlaw any further use of 30th anniversary artwork that spoils the original's ending. It appears again on the back of the box. Neca is only making 1700 of these (mine is numbered 290). Sideshow only made 750 of their Lawgivers, plus, I guess 750 of the bloody Lawgivers. And
let's not forget the Medicom Lawgiver. Is there still an APES fan that doesn't have a Lawgiver Statue?

Collider.com (a good site I trust) sez they've
heard "from sources" that Fox is leaning towards the title "War of the POTA".
This title has been rumored for a while (imdb, etc.) but I don't like it IF
it's true. I could go for "War FOR the POTA" and get away from the 2 "of the"s .
"War For" would also be a nice nod to "Battle For the POTA".
The director has said the title he wuz thinking
of would be one word less than "Dawn of the POTA" (like "Beneath the POTA"). So
I would take this title with a grain of salt for now. If sources are hearing a
title it might be that Fox has picked one and will announce it soon. The
director has said he hopes to film the movie toward the end of the year for
Summer 2017 release.

.htmlBoy, I really hope they're trying for an exceptionally good script, because otherwise I think this movie may be a misfire. Don't know why I feel this way, but right now I'm just not too enthusiastic about this. This movie needs not only to conclude the Caesar trilogy, but set up a possible fourth film. It will have to be really, really good. I think otherwise it could be a franchise killer.

So far, neither Fox or the director have denied
the title "War of the POTA", which is what the world is calling the next "Apes".
So this is kind of a nice logo. Home Page City!

Maybe this is the one where apes get some
clothes. If ever an ape needed clothes, it would be for war as protection.
Might be interesting. As always, it depends on
the script. I guess this movie will have more actual production time than any
Ape movie. And it will probably have the biggest budget, thanx to how much
"Dawn" made.

I'm not crazy about this title either, not even about the movie it
promises.

At first this might seem like a rerun of "Dawn",
with Caesar vs. the war mongers. But I have a feeling this time it will be a
situation where Caesar "has to fight" so maybe he mobilizes his society for war
against the humans. The director said this movie will give Caesar his greatest
challenge so I think it will be something along those lines. Could examine why
societies always seem to go down the path to war, even when they don't want to.
If it's an examination of war, maybe it's a good title.
