I'm not getting the update on the link, but I found the current installment:

I was beginning to wonder if this was an AU to the events after Escape, maybe linking to the original story Cornelius told about the apes' origins, but all I can say after reading this installment is well done!

I wonder if Dr. Zaius knew all along...

            Interesting stuff, isn't it?

How much of an impact on this did our favorite franchise's successful revival likely have? I'd wager that it's a significant amount, wouldn't you? How significant, though, isn't clear.

Andy Serkis will soon be going ape again, with plans to shoot "War of the POTA" later this year. Meanwhile, here's the debut info on his "Star Wars" character, Supreme Commander Snoke (for those familiar with SW, he sounds like this trilogy's version of the Emperor, a very important dude). J. J. Abrams picked Serkis to be his actor/motion capture expert after a very early screening of "Dawn of the POTA" given by his close pal Matt Reeves. "The Force Awakens" is slated to be the movie event of the year and might finally dethrone James (almost POTA) Cameron from the top of the box office after 18 years.

I'll bet they don't start filming WAR until 2016.

They also have to work around Andy directing "The Jungle Book", a HUGE time commitment. Probably they'll shoot whenever Andy is available.
Fun fact: Frieda ("Rise") Pinto has been cast in Andy's "Jungle Book".

You're preaching to the choir... I thought a "Conquest" trio would have been the way to go too, but it's not the way they're planning it... The way it looks now, if and when the Orangutan is released, they'll probably team him up with a "Battle" Caesar and Virgil...

The main thing is they're being released, but I do question their choice for a three pack...

One might be cynical and assume this way the "Conquest" fans have to buy an Aldo as well as the orang and boost sales (which is needed). Or maybe a "soldier ape" included boosts sales. Probably the orang was an afterthought and it was too late. In any case, I think it ruins the 3-pack (for collectors that keep them in the box). If it were me I'd make the switch (unless boxes were already printed). I don't think it helps sales in the long run (either people buy apes or they don't). In the end they'll have a 3-pack that is "off" for eternity. When Cornelius digs up the box after we're all long gone he'll assume humans had bad taste.

Makeup FX legend Rick (POTA2001) Baker has decided to retire. There's just not enough work in these CG happy times to keep his studio running. Rick was known as the best ape man in the business. His 60,000 square foot studio was at it's peak when he did POTA but recently it's been used so one guy could create one set of teeth. Rick auctioned off his awesome props and looks to the future with no bitterness. Although he's retired from makeup, at 64 he says he has more creativity in him and we'll hear from him soon.

Subject: The "Dawn" Patrol stands down
                          .html
                          .html
With 2015 almost half over, it seemed safe to finalize how "Dawn of the POTA" did in 2014. All the "American Sniper"s-come-lately have been tallied, so let's see how "Dawn" did.

                            DOMESTIC (U.S. and Canada):
Every year has it's surprises and certainly "American Sniper" was one of them. It really was a 2015 movie but it had a limited run in 2014 to qualify for the Oscars so technically it's a 2014 film. And as such, it knocked "Dawn" out of the Top 10. It's incredible success was wild and while people were divided about it's merits, the fact that an "R"-rated drama could rub shoulders with the big boys does help the industry consider making more and perhaps increase the budgets. Uncomfy dramas are important.

                           1. "American Sniper" - $350 million
                           2. "Hunger Games 3" - $337 m.
                           3. "Guardians of the G" - $333 m.
                           4. "Cap 2" - $260 m.
                           5. "LEGO" - $258 m.
                           6. "Hobbit 3" - $255 m.
                           7. "Transformers 4" - $245 m.
                           8. "Maleficent" - $241 m.
                           9. "X-Men 5" - $234 m.
                          10. "Big Hero 6" - $223 m.
                          11. "Dawn of the POTA" - $209 m.

                           WORLDWIDE:
2014 became well known as a down year, with only one blockbuster to pass $1 billion (2015 has already had 2, with more almost certain to come). These days, with the importance of foreign markets, it can be pretty much predicted at the beginning of the year what the Top 10 will look like. There's always surprises and some movies don't perform as expected (usually because they suck, the great unknown until a movie arrives). But generally in these franchise-crazed times, the Top 10 is the usual suspects. All I can say is I'm glad POTA is now one of the usual suspects and I hope it continues.

                           1. "Transformers" - $1 billion
                           2. "Hobbit 3" - $955 m.
                           3. "Guardians of the Galaxy" - $774 m.
                           4. "Maleficent" - $758 m.
                           5. "Hunger Games 3" - $752 m.
                           6. "X-Men 5" - $748 m.
                           7. "Capt. America 2" - $715 m.
                           8. "Spidey" - $709 m.
                           9. "Dawn of the POTA" - $708.8 m.
                          10. "Interstellar" - $673 m.

                            by John O'Callaghan

A project more than two years in the making, SIMIANS & SERIALISM is the first comprehensive history and analysis of Jerry Goldsmith's landmark score to Arthur P. Jacobs production of Franklin J. Schaffner's film PLANET OF THE APES.

                            • SIMIANS & SERIALISM also contains a large amount of new research on the development, production and release of PLANET OF THE APES and its four sequels, revealing fascinating, unknown details.
                            • Each and every cue in Goldsmith's score is decoded and deconstructed, detailing for the first time the composer's extensive use of Arnold Schoenberg's serial technique.
                            • Includes 49 illustrations with examples from Goldsmith's score.
                            • SIMIANS & SERIALISM is an indispensable volume for any fan of PLANET OF THE APES, Jerry Goldsmith, film music or movie history

Today (June 20) is the 40th anniversary of the release of "Jaws". What does that have to do with POTA? Well, there is a big connection to me. I became an Apes fan with the TV show in late 1974. It didn't last long but it stayed in my mind long after. "Jaws" came out the next summer and was my next passion. "Jaws" was HUGE! 40 years later we're so spoiled by FX extravaganzas but come on! The craftsmanship of POTA and "Jaws" were rare then. Both were "bad animal" movies with top notch FX, early works by movie composers who would become legend (Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams, respectively) and both owed their existence to Richard Zanuck. The main boosters for POTA were Arthur Jacobs and Mort Abrahams, without whose persistence the movie wouldn't have been possible. But still, Zanuck was the only studio head willing to listen and eventually give the green light.
When Zanuck got the boot from Fox, he took his Fox cohort David Brown and they started producing their own movies ("The Sting", the John Chambers-centric "Sssss"). One of their biggest early successes was rolling the dice on young Steven Spielberg with "Sugarland Express". While doing that, Spielberg saw the galleys for the book "Jaws" that Zanuck/Brown had bought and the rest is history. An interesting side note is that "Jaws" might have starred Charlton Heston and Linda Harrison. Heston was definitely in the mix until Spielberg decided a movie star would distract people from the story. As for the role of Sheriff Brody's wife, it came down to Zanuck's wife (Linda Harrison) or the head of Universal's wife Lorraine Gary . Gary won and to be honest I can't imagine "Jaws" without Roy Scheider and Lorraine Gary; Spielberg was right.
There have been many "Jaws" docs over the years but once again I'll mention "The Shark Is Working". Made by a bunch of "Jaws" fans, I think it foreshadowed what we're seeing now with Kickstarter where fans are making their own docs and other fans are paying for them. Personally, I enjoy the work of fans more than the slick work done by the studios to promote their stuff. I remember posting here about the doc, which was finished but couldn't be shown because they didn't have the rights to the "Jaws" clips. I thought the obvious thing was to put it on a DVD release of "Jaws" and that's eventually what was done. I just watched it again before writing this and it's just a blast. POTA has a terrific doc called "Behind the POTA" but I would love to see a doc similar to "The Shark" about the impact of POTA and how the fans have carried it on. Obviously people think of sci-fi when they think of rabid fans. Even as a fan of "Jaws" I never thought there were pilgrimages to Martha's Vineyard and all the stuff in the doc. It's a lot of fun.
One of the main reasons I brought the doc up here was the late Percy Rodrigues. They interviewed him as well as many others who are no longer with us (Roy Scheider was nice to narrate the doc). POTA fans know Percy as Aboro on the POTA TV show. But he became quite the voice of movie trailers in the '70's and "Jaws" was perhaps his most memorable. As director Kevin Smith sez: "(Percy) was the gateway for a lot of people into the "Jaws" universe. He was like the weed to what would become the crack of Jaws".
So, I can't help but think of POTA and Jaws as bros. Obviously they have different messages: Jaws' goal is to kill the animal (it's creator Peter Benchley spent the rest of his life trying to save sharks and give them a better reputation) while POTA has "bad animals" but it also has good ones to balance it out. In the end POTA probably carries more weight but "Jaws" has a lot to say about the human condition. They will both be the ultimate loves of my childhood, so thank you "Jaws" and Happy Anniversary.

Hey guys thanks for accepting me to this group, so I'm Joey and I'm new so to introduce myself I'll just say that I'm eighteen and I'm the only person I know who cares more about the Planet of the Apes franchise than my future. Anyways, like my subject suggests, I've recently been trying to define my view on the Apes canon (seems like something that's pretty debated). So, I just bought Rich Handley's definitive timeline and, since I'm also reading BOOM! Studios ongoing comic series from 2011, I'm noticing the 'canon' of the original pentalogy universe (if that's what you call things fitting into the timeline of the original movies) often contradicts itself (e.i. the conspiracy regarding the Lawgiver and the fake writing of the Sacred Scrolls, the apes culture seeming different when depicted by different publishers, etc...). I'm just wondering what fans generally regard as canon and what things they just sort of ignore (if anything). I was inspired to ask because I'd been pretty comfortable assuming there was just the one Lawgiver (the one shown in Battle) however apparently there are references to multiple in some Marvel and Malibu comics and I think I'm just gonna ignore that fact. Anyways, let me know what you think.

In regard to your question about canon, a basic rule of thumb for most franchises is that only live action films and TV series are considered canon. Everything else (Novels, comics, etc.) are not. This seems the safest bet in my opinion since the films and TV series are what all can agree on. This way BOOM is free to pursue it's own storylines and not have to adhere to what Marvel or Malibu did decades ago. Hope that answers your question.

Why would that be canon?? I don't think the author of Conspiracy has ever claimed that it was canon. Basic rule of thumb is that the films and TV series are canon and everything else is not.

If you're not willing to accept alternate timelines, then obviously POTA2001 and the "Rise of the POTA" continuity are not canon.
Once "Rise" leads back to the original Heston movie fans will slap themselves and say, "Hey, what?".
But it's really quite simple. "Rise", "Dawn" and whatever comes next leads to "Planet" and "Beneath", then the ape-o-nauts go back in time to an alternate 1973, which leads to "Escape", "Conquest", "Battle", etc. I think pretty much all the books and comic books can survive under that construction.
POTA2001, we all love it but it's it's own thing.
So there. Hey! Let go of me! Where are you taking me?! Zira and Cornelius changed history!! Soylent Green is people!!

And it's still a debate as to whether the TV series is really part of
the same continuity of the film series. I don't think there's one
unified view of this. Pretty much it's each APES fan's own
interputation. There are so many inconsistancies that a canon covering

                                Very true.

Again true. No one involved in the films or TV series has ever made a statement either way on this.

                                >There are so many inconsistancies that a canon covering it all is impossible.

Also true. The original films have their own canon, the TV series its own and the reboot films their own canon.

Can't say this is a definitive answer but Russo commented on this in his book:

Well, Russo has told me himself that he doesn't hold with the
Dehn/timeloop concept and believes ESCAPE starts a new timeline, but I
don't know if he tries to fit the TV series with the films.

I agree no answer will please every fan but I've always seen the TV series leading to the original movie. 3085 - 3955 (I don't use the time mentioned in the original because everything else points to 3955) is still a long time for clothes, etc. to stay the same but it's less time than saying it stayed the same since "Battle". And with the Ape empire in California it gives it some time to make it to New York.
I did a chronology for "Ape Chronicles" in 1994 which was meant to connect everything (books, comics, etc.) and I think it worked (even then I saw "Escape" as a split in time). But I also said it was just an experiment to see if everything fit. Each canon should fit the individual and what they are happy with. I can argue with someone who accepts that time is a circle where "Battle" leads to "Planet" but I don't begrudge them that. POTA is meant to be fun, not a bunch of rules.
Rich Handley's book ("Timeline of the POTA") is awesome but I think he went too far in connecting everything. I don't see how POTA2001 and Boulle's novel fits. I would put them separately. But it's a great resource.
I haven't read everything POTA but I don't think anything really contradicts the movies and TV shows. It's not like "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" where there's thousands of stories (at this point "Star Wars" literally has a "story group" that decides what's canon and what isn't). Some might be squeamish to include crossovers like "Alien Nation" and "Star Trek" but I think it would work.

But it's really quite simple. "Rise", "Dawn" and whatever comes next
leads to "Planet" and "Beneath", then the ape-o-nauts go back in time
to an alternate 1973, which leads to "Escape", "Conquest", "Battle",
etc. I think pretty much all the books and comic books can survive
                                under that construction.
POTA2001, we all love it but it's it's own thing.
So there. Hey! Let go of me! Where are you taking me?! Zira and
Cornelius changed history!! Soylent Green is people!!

Why would that be canon?? I don't think the author of Conspiracy has
ever claimed that it was canon. Basic rule of thumb is that the films
and TV series are canon and everything else is not.

It's Al's birthday but he takes the cake anyway. He's counted down to the release of 3 POTA movies either on websites or twitter and keeps fans up to date from a variety of angles. Now he's already gone into battle for "War" (of the POTA):

He's also got the new "Star Wars" movie going, so he's got both the life-long friends Matt Reeves and J. J. Abrams covered (both using Andy Serkis for their nefarious purposes).

It's been a blast following his efforts for 15 years, and he's still only 25. Correction: 26. Happy birthday!

Happy 4th of July weekend, when we in America celebrate revolting (like the apes) against our British oppressors and members in the UK lament getting their asses kicked (like the humans) back in 1776 (plus having us save their butts from the Nazis during WWII). To celebrate how great America is and how much the British suck;-) a new installment of the HASSLEIN INSTITUTE OF TEMPORAL PHYSICS is now available. Thanks to  everyone that contributed.

Just got the Blu-Ray of the movie 'Von Ryan's Express'. On it there is a documentary about Jerry Goldsmith. It's noted that Goldsmith only won one Oscar during his entire career for The Omen. However, it is said that he should have won it for at least four other films: Chinatown, Patton, Star Trek and Planet of the Apes. Interesting.

Today is exactly 2 years before the next POTA movie is scheduled to hit (7/14/17). No one has denied the rumored title "War of the POTA" but it hasn't been officially announced yet. Director Matt Reeves seems to be hanging in there, though he would be only the second director ever to do 2 POTA movies. It's pretty much assumed this one will end Caesar's story as a trilogy before moving into the future (put some clothes on those apes!).

Judging from the title it's safe to assume the stakes are pretty high in this one. Reeves has said it's going to be epic and a tough shoot. Though it was 3 years between "Rise" and "Dawn" they lost a year by switching directors. If Reeves gets the full 3 years with no snags it'll be the longest production time an Apes movie has ever had (certainly a far cry from the "movie a year" pace of the originals). Reeves has said he hopes to shoot by the end of the year. The apes should look better than ever, not only because of the enhanced post-production time, but also because "Dawn" was a work in progress of new techniques that they have now mastered (in the DVD commentary Reeves says that's what WETA explained to him).

As for the story, Reeves sez "given the trajectory of how (Caesar's) arc has gone from ("Rise") through "Dawn" so far, what is so exciting to us is that this is sort of his biggest arc yet. We are going to take him to places that test him in a way that is more painful, and in ways that he has never been tested before. (We will) test his leadership, and more than that his heart and soul. There are ways in which the experience he had with Koba in the last film really creates a context in this story that is going to be, in a way, his greatest challenge yet. We are very excited about it...
"(We) know that war is not avoided by the end of "Dawn". That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with, where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever, wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid. And now he is right in the middle of it. The things that happen in (this) story test him in huge ways, in the ways in which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply. It's going to be an epic story... This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses". (JoBlo.com, Dec. 2014)

I got mine last week.  I'd originally ordered from Entertainment Earth as a pre-order.  That was a mistake; they never delivered it, and just a couple of days ago they sent an email saying they never would.  They had the lowest price, but claimed they only received a small shipment of stock from NECA.  I gave up on them even before they canceled on me, and ordered one from Amazon.com -- $35 more (US$89 vs. the US$54 EE had asked), but Amazon actually shipped it.

It's a nice piece.  The material it's made of has a rough finish, almost like concrete, and the whole thing is a nice sand color.  It's solid and heavy.  The Lawgiver's left arm (the one on the right as you look at it) is in an odd, straight-out pose that doesn't look quite right (and doesn't match the screen-used Lawgiver statue from POTA), but the face and other details are good.  I also have the much larger (and, to my eye, much more accurate Sideshow Collectibles Lawgiver (as well as the Medicom plastic one, which is quite good, too).

The NECA looks a little scrawny to my eye (almost as if the whole thing has been stretched a bit vertically), but it's a nice piece, and I'm glad I bought it.  Sideshow is the best; this is #2; and the Medicom is #3.  All are nice.

Note: I'm in Toronto, but Amazon.com had no qualms about shipping to Canada, and the shipping charge and import fees (just the sales tax) were cheap; Amazon handled the brokerage, and it was delivered four days after I ordered it.

I got mine from Entertainment Earth back in late April, but when I tried to order another one, I eventually got the response you did. So, I turned to amazon too, however because I have Amazon Prime and because I've put off their credit card pitch for years, I finally relented when I found that if I get the card I can get the Neca Lawgiver for a little less than $10 and no postage charge. It's on its way now and so I'll have two. I like the Sideshow Lawgiver, but I like the Neca one better, which isn't perfect, but looks more screen accurate than the Sideshow.

I ordered two of these from Amok Time as soon as I could after they were announced.  I think I found about that retailer from one of your posts years ago.  They shipped them to me very quickly after they were released.  I think this version is the best of the three that have been released so far, one of the best collectibles from POTA in my opinion.  I really like the "stone" texture of this one, and I think the head sculpt is the most accurate of the three.  It would have been nice if the Sideshow version had this coloration and texture.  (What I would really like to see would be an Ape City house model made out of this same material.)

I was also really impressed with the NECA version of the standard "long coat" Dr. Zaius.  It looks like you could take the makeup off that tiny head and Maurice Evans would be underneath.

I have the Neca Lawgiver on display with the long coat Zaius too. I recall a photo of Maurice Evans as Zaius in such a shot outside at the ranch. Yeah, a model of Ape City made from the same kind of resin would be fantastic.

I bought the Neca one and it has spots with no paint around his face.

I got it from Neca's 'official' eBay seller.

When I contacted them, their attitude was pretty poor.

They said they had none left in stock and the cost to mail it back from Australia to the USA would have been more than the refund amount.

                                            A great experience.

At least we know the director is still aboard. He tweeted that he's still "immersed in a world of apes". Maybe that would be a good title, "World of the POTA"?

Why isn't the title War FOR the Planet of the Apes?    War "OF" the Planet of the Apes seems inferior in comparison, doesn't it?

Any idea what's next?   Fox won't abandon this wildly successful franchise.    Fortunately for us.   :-)
