limited to what I can say about a story I know little about. My point
was to try and let you see that some of us are paying attention, even
if we have nothing to add.

Tom Fowler art begins in issue #3, yes. But we wouldn't deprive anyone of Salgood Sam either, so Sam does the backup story while Tom takes over the front. (Caesar and Armando
in the circus!) I don't know what's going on with the white marks on the cover, though. I've gotten a couple of copies, and everything was clean and fine....

This is very cool, Neil. If the story was going to be about two dozen or so storyboards I would encourage you to color all of them. Based on the first dozen or so storyboards I thought a children's book format
would be good for the story, with color added. T's recent comments about the other film characters being involved make it sound like the story may be longer and more complex than I imagined. If that's the case
then the strip format may be the better way to go. Either way, I want to see more of the story, whether it's in storyboards, strips or stick figures on cocktail napkins. Greg

*** He wrote: "In the book two space-voyagers (far be it from me to
reveal their identity!) travel to the planet Betelgeuse, which
resembles Earth except in one vital particular." etc.
You're partly right: he was referring to Jinn & Phyllis --
mistakenly. They, if you'll recall, were not traveling to "the planet
Betelgeuse" but, rather, were flying around in outer space where they
happened upon Ulysse Merou's message-in-a-bottle describing the
voyage he took with Antelle & Levain to the planet Soror which orbits
Betelgeuse.
I get the feeling that Dehn had not read Boulle's novel more than
once and hadn't read it in quite some time before he penned this
little preface -- the fact that he makes several goofs regarding its
details is proof enough of that. The first part of that sentence
quoted above sure sounds like he's describing Jinn & Phyllis... but
then he morphs those characters with the protagonist(s) of the main
part of the book -- Ulysse et al., who were the ones who traveled
from Earth to Betelgeuse's habitable planet, Soror.
I'm surprised that nobody prepping that edition for the press noticed
the mistake. Don't editors READ the books they're planning on
publishing? Or did they just assume that Dehn was an expert on
Boulle's book, since he wrote those sequels that were derived from a
film based loosely on it?
Ah well... these flubs of Dehn's in this preface are not on-screen
ones, so I don't have to wrack my brain trying to unflub 'em!

*** BENEATH's flaws stem, predominantly, from Heston's unwillingness
to devote anything above the bare minimum effort on his part to
reprise his role. If Heston had told Zanuck, "Dick, let me see a
script and, if it's as good as the first one, I'd be happy to do a
sequel," then maybe they would have been freer to come up with a
story that made full use of the character Taylor (and fuller use of
Zira & Cornelius).
But Chuck had the prejudiced view that ANY sequel would be nothing
more than "adventures among the monkeys" and he only reluctantly
agreed to be in it, insisting that they kill him off right away.
They had to cook up a plot that worked around that enormous obstacle.
It was a handicap, like trying to play basketball with your shoelaces
tied.
They HAD to include Taylor in the story SOMEHOW, but in such a way
that he had only minimal screentime -- all due to Heston's demand to
devote as little effort as possible to the production.
If they hadn't had to invent a new protagonist -- Brent -- to take
over the chores of going from place-to-place to reveal to the
audience what ELSE there was to be found on Earth near and in New
York City's ruins, then BENEATH would indeed have had a chance to be
far far better. Imagine if Jonathan Swift had to replace his
protagonist Lemuel Gulliver right after the first voyage, to
Lilliput, and introduce a DIFFERENT character to take up the slack.
Swift wasn't under any such constraints, of course. Unfortunately,
Paul Dehn and Mort Abrahams WERE under those constraints.
Heston wasn't contractually obligated to be in the film, so I guess
we should be happy he obliged them, albeit for a bare minimal
involvement. I just wish he had been more foresighted, to entertain
the possibility that a sequel COULD be as top-notch as the original
IF the writers had the time to plot out a story worth telling, not
hamstrung by an actor's unwillingness to commit. If he had insisted
on a script FIRST and then either turned it down based on its lack of
merits OR accepted it based on its merits, then we wouldn't be having
these pissing contests.
Imagine Sean Connery, after GOLDFINGER, telling Cubby Broccoli (sp?)
that he'd only do another Bond film if they killed him off in the
first ten minutes, so that they had to cook up a story where Bond is
actually killed and they have to resort to telling the adventures of
Agent 008 from now on. It's one thing to replace Doctor Whos every so
often -- but he's a Timelord who can 'die' and morph into a new body,
making it easy to replace actors when they get tired of the role. But
replacing Bond? I don't mean the actor (which they've done 5 times
now), but the CHARACTER played by the actor(s). Can't be done.
Fox didn't have the option of replacing Heston in the role of Taylor
(well, they COULD have done that, but they wisely realized that
audiences wouldn't accept anybody else in the role; replacing
McDowall wasn't as difficult since David Watson was wearing his
chimp 'ape'liances & costume, and had less screentime). Fox HAD to
agree to limit Taylor's screentime as per Heston's demands or they
couldn't get the movie started.
Given that enormous handicap, that huge hurdle they had to deal with,
it's amazing that they still managed to tell a story that was
compelling... at times frightening and mysterious... and, ultimately,
shocking in its abrupt ending. The vast majority of POTA fans will
admit that PLANET is a much better film, but that doesn't diminish
the impact BENEATH had on audiences then and on the POTA franchise.
The ending of BENEATH hangs like a Sword of Damocles over all the
sequels: the presence of Zira, Cornelius, their son in "present day"
wouldn't have happened if not for it. And the destruction of the
Earth is the prime motivating factor in Hasslein's "antagonist" role.
It is the be-all and end-all of our controversial debate regarding
POTA timelines.
I can understand POTA fans not putting it at the top of their POTA
movie list (though there ARE those who do, notwithstanding the
brilliance of PLANET), but I just wish the overly-critical would cut
it some friggin' slack. If you had a gun pointed to your head and you
were ordered to write a script for a sequel to a hugely popular and
successful movie... provided you could only introduce that first
film's protagonist and then kill him off in the first reel... what
are the chances that you could do a better job -- given the time
constraints APJAC Productions had to work with -- than the one Dehn
and Abrahams (et al) did?
BENEATH got made because Heston reluctantly said "Yes". And it wasn't
as great as it COULD have been because his "Yes" had that one damned
condition: Minimal participation. NONE of the other sequels had to be
written around such obstacles. So, if you think ESCAPE and CONQUEST
are better than BENEATH you have only to take this into account: Dehn
didn't have to tell stories using Kim & Roddy only minimally. And, to
his credit, Roddy didn't hold out for enormous wage increases for his
participation, the way some prima donna actors nowadays might do. He
was a workaday actor glad to get the part and contribute to the film.
Heston, a true Hollywood star at the time, didn't "need" to be as
generous with his talent -- he had other roles to do.
I bet that if he had been part of the old "studio system" -- where
you did the roles that your studio boss told you to do -- then he
would've had to do the sequel according to the specifics of the
script, which he would have no approval over. He couldn't make any
demands. I almost wish that the studio system hadn't dissolved pretty
much by the time BENEATH was made. They, then, could've made him do
more than the glorified cameo appearance he makes in BENEATH; he,
instead, could've been the protagonist throughout the entire story,
with no need for Dehn to invent Brent and all the rest. That would've
made for a better film.
As such, though, I still think it's a marvelous movie, warts & all.
And I disagree with Rory as to its quality of direction (etc). Is Ted
Post as good as Schaffner? No. But he's still more-than-competent.
But opinions are opinions and Rory & I can agree to disagree on the
merits of BENEATH.

All of your arguments are well thought out, and the defenses sound. From what I can tell, you agree with me. You've listed many reasons why the film's problems exist, and
how no one particular person could be blamed for them. So, fine. We agree. It was pretty good, it could have been better, the films problems are many, and no one person can be blamed on them.
To say that Beneath was chock-a-bloc with unrealized potential is to also agree with my essential point: that the film is flawed, and that it holds up poorly to others in the series. No one argues that Taylor
would have been more interesting than Brent, and it's not Dehn's fault, etc. But to discuss the film as it could have, or should have been, seems the definition of a moot point. The film, as it IS,
is a disappointment, compared to Planet, and isn't as good as the two that immediately follow it...
I'd still rather watch Beneath than any piece of #)(*#@() sequel with the words Star Wars in it (Except the first one, with Luke and Darth and Han and Leia, the first one's terrific!)
So we're probably very close in opinion on this subject.

I absolutely DO NOT agree. I don't blame Charlton Heston for BENEATH. No way, no how. He was artistically correct that a sequel was unnecessary and remains so today. Chuck was right!
I blame the mentality at the studio at that time that decided the budget for the second APES would be less than the first, then slashed it even further. At that point the production was doomed to little more than
"B" status, with a script written by committee, and a director mostly know for doing television.
One thing I will say positive about BENEATH -- it could have been worse!

Absolutely! Look at the shading on the horse!

You'll have to ask James about that. I assume what you're downloading is simply a Jpg file, and then you'll send that to your printer.

So, you're telling me you don't know how to use Adobe Photoshop.
I feel your pain. I used to not know how to use it too, but luckily I had to learn it at work.
It's far too difficult for me to explain here. Better if you just tell me what you want and I email the file back to you.
As far as changing the cover that James posted earlier and I suggested alterations to, let's see what James does.

PALM SPRINGS, California (April 10) - Cheeta the chimp, star of a dozen "Tarzan" movies in the 1930s and 1940s, celebrated his 74th birthday with sugar-free cake.
Although healthy and active, Cheeta is diabetic.
"He had a good time. The party went real good," said keeper Dan Westfall, operator of the primate sanctuary Creative Habitats and Enrichment for Endangered and Threatened Apes - or CHEETA.
Representatives from a Spanish film festival also showed up for Sunday's party to present Cheeta with the first award of his career - an International Comedy Film Festival of Peniscola prize.
Cheeta has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest chimp . Chimps rarely live past the age of 40 in the wild, but can reach 60 in captivity.
The graying, 150-pound Cheeta, one of six primates at the desert sanctuary 110 miles east of Los Angeles, is very active and "he still has every tooth in his head," Westfall said Monday.
Asked about his typical day, Westfall said one of Cheeta's favorite activities is riding around with him in the car. He also likes to paint, what Westfall calls "ape-stract" pieces that are sold to raise
money for the nonprofit sanctuary.
Westfall adopted Cheeta in 1992 from his uncle Tony Gentry, an animal trainer who worked in Hollywood and obtained Cheeta from Africa in the 1930s.

was drawn / originated
by Dick Bruna. It is connected to POTA as he was
the cover artist for
the '60s Dutch release of Boulle's novel.
But of course we all knew that which is why no one

I've heard nothing of this. Where are you getting your
information from?
This would a spectacular IMO. While I enjoyed
Burton's Apes, I wasn't blown away like I'd hoped to be. Blown away like
Batman Begins blew me away, completely anihalating the previous
installments. For years I thought I'd be stuck with the '76 Kong being
the crap remake of the classic, but Jackson put that bad feeling down by
doing it right.
And not that I think Burton's is total crap, how sweet if
PJ would do the same for POTA.

The new Planet Of The Apes DVD collection package
looks suspiciously like ... Roddy McDowall.
|
The monkey-man head-and-shoulders, modelled after Roddy McDowall's
stylized chimpanzee makeup for the original Planet Of The Apes, is
hideously beautiful.
When I pop it out of its carton, pluck the packing-foam shards out of
its grizzled hair and trundle it off to show my girlfriend Rachel, she
gasps ... in fright! "Get that out of here! It's too real! It's staring
right at me!"
Mission accomplished, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, this thing
is mega-cool.
Tucked away in a felt-lined, rectanglar hole in his back, under a
pop-up piece of green canvas between what should be Roddy's shoulder
blades, is a 14-disc set called Planet Of The Apes: The Ultimate DVD
Collection.
All that it contains, with the exception of the 13-episode animated
series called Return To the Planet Of The Apes, has been on disc before.
But never in a complete single package. And never hidden inside a Roddy
McDowall tribute bust that also pays homage to the artistry of makeup
artist John Chambers (among many creations, he famously designed Spock's
ears for Star Trek).
Everything "Apes" is here: Franklin J. Schaffner's original Planet Of
The Apes (1968) in the two-disc anniversary edition; Beneath The Planet Of
The Apes (1970); Escape From Planet Of The Apes (1971); Conquest Of The
Planet Of The Apes (1972); Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973) in the
Extended Version DVD; the TV series Planet Of The Apes in a four-disc set;
the animated series (1975) in a two-disc set that does not restore the
flawed original prints; and Tim Burton's controversial but thrilling
"re-imagined" remake, Planet Of The Apes (2001), in its two-disc, fully
loaded Special Edition.
The original film, an Americanized version of French sci-fi author
Pierre Boule's 1963 pulp bestseller, was an enormous risk because of its
unique story and its $5.8-million budget, $1 million of that for Chambers'
makeup department. But it was an instant and then enduring hit once it
made it to the screen after a four-year ordeal.
The film, despite its camp appeal, was also an elaborate, even
sophisticated metaphor for the horrors of racial intolerance in the U.S.
Parts of the series can be mapped out on the same route as the Civil
Rights Movement.
Most of the sequels, made on diminishing budgets with less attention to
detail and story each time, suck -- but they're fun. The live action TV
show was an interesting failure and so was the crudely animated series.
Now the Roddy McDowall bust collection is here for completionists (at a
suggested retail price of $250, although you can probably find it cheaper
by shopping around). Only 2,000 will be available tomorrow in Canada. To
twist Charlton Heston's angry outburst in 1968, this is one damned dirty
Ape you might want to get your hands on.

Issue 78 is now available to download from Hunter's site. Once again the brains are cover featured, but have they escaped from their jars as the next step in their diabolical plan for world domination or were
their jars somehow destroyed by the forces of good that are trying to thwart them? Read the story inside and find out!
I'm on vacation next week, so there will be no announcement for the next issue (but it is done and will be posted on schedule). You're all on your own to make your way to Hunter's site at this time next
week for issue 79. Greg
