Here is how it scanned originally:
Here's the same
page after I cleaned it and straightened it up:
I convert it to
greyscale (B&W) and fiddle about with brightness and contrast until It looks
like pristine black and white but without losing any of the original art
details. Next I clean up any other marks and bits that shouldn't be
there and delete them along with the Hungarian text:
Then comes the
easy part (Ha!) figuring out which bits of text go where and then
getting the English to fit in the same spaces:
Repeat 28 times
(including the cover), allow extra time for some pages as they didn't all
scan as well as the one in the example, and that's all there is to
it!
I mostly use Paint
Shop pro 7 myself, purely because I find it so easy and fast to use compared to
any of the other graphics programmes.
There is probably
a quicker more efficient way to do all this as well but this is just the
way I figured out how to do it!
Neil
I suspect that you are not only supplying the English text but also
cleaning up the artwork: the stuff is in Black-&-White and the white
is so BRIGHT a white that it can't be merely a scanned-in image. This
comic was printed in the 1970s, right? Chances are the paper it was
printed on has yellowed a tad by now, I'm guessing. This online
version looks pristine, though. How do you do it? Are you using
Photoshop or something similar, and is there a 'tool' that can
brighten up faded yellowing scanned images?

.htmlThis is very similar to what I do with the Marvel UKs, as well as the
other scanning projects I've worked on. Except that for the interior
black & white pages I scan them as greyscale rather than scan tham in
color and convert. Saves a step and keeps the file sizes down. I use
Adobe Photoshop Elements to do the cleaning & straightening.

As this group is

There is
also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in th

There's the

all wearing.
Looking at panel 40, which has no text, I realized that there have
been no sound effects in the comic so far. You would think that panel
40 would call for a "BANG!" or some other type of gunshot sound,
although the panel is equally effective without it. Interesting.

Also newly available on Hunter's site are scans of the Hungarian comic book adaptation of Pierre Boulle's novel Monkey Planet. On the PotaDG group Neil Foster has been posting pages with English text, done
from scans of a comic obtained by Michael Whitty. Separately, Dave Ballard also obtained a copy of this comic, and cleaned-up a set of scans retaining the Hungarian text. Dave's scans are available now, either

And those
symbols on the gorillas' outfits -- they look suspiciously like some of the
glyphs that show up (later, presumably) on the ape-garb worn in "PLANET" &
"BENEATH". And the head-gear on that human in the last panel (the guy in the
foreground) looks rather like the kind worn by Mendez & Kolp, if we ignore
the 'glyph' on the back of his head. Hmmm... cool! I like it! So... what do
these lil' details portend?

| Subject: FW: PETA's fight against Primarily Primates Sanctuary |
.html
.html
Message
Greetings, Friends of
Apes!
Yesterday I received a letter from Friends of Primates concerning a
sanctuary that was helpful to me in my search for Baby Milo (Escape from the
PotA). Wallace Swett, founder and
president of the sanctuary, helped me in my search. The news was a bit of a shock to me and
somewhat bewildering, so I called Priscilla Feral, President of Friends of
Animals.
The sanctuary that I am talking about is Primarily
Primates in San Antonio ,
Texas .
I have been referred to them on literally several occasions as a
responsible agency that could help me with my search for the chimp actor. They are now victim to legal
proceedings, and have been for months, at the hand of the PETA
organization.
An internet search would lead one to believe that Primarily Primates is
abusing their animals terribly, but conversation with Ms. Feral reveals that
photos and videos were staged by a “volunteer” and other documentation was
forged. It is my understanding that Wallace Swett
stepped down as president in August of this year. And Stephen Tello became president in
October. PETA has “bad blood” with
Stephen Tello. It is my
understanding that PETA had him legally removed; using this staged evidence, and
is now acting as a pseudo guardian for the animals. A bookkeeper and three caregivers are
actually the only staff of Primarily Primates that remain intact.
The clincher is that PETA has already disbursed some of
the animals and intends to send the remaining animals to Chimp Haven if given
legal control of the sanctuary.
Although it is not generally known, Chimp Haven’s animals are owned by
the NIH (National Institute of Health) and are basically warehoused there and
can be called into duty as research animals at any time. Animals at Primarily Primates are owned
by the sanctuary and live their lives at the sanctuary and end their lives,
naturally, at the sanctuary.
The reason I am writing this is because someone here will
certainly care about what happens to this sanctuary. It is home to several retired
actors. One of these is
already on track to be euthanized.
The Friends of Animals agency is helping fund their legal expenses.
I would suggest that it would be helpful
to send funds to them, earmarked for Primarily Primates legal defense. Sending money directly to Primarily
Primates would put those funds directly into the hands of PETA.
Priscilla Feral, president of Friends of Animals, said
that she would be glad to speak personally with anyone who has interest in
helping save this sanctuary. I told
her that I, personally, didn’t have access to huge sums of money to be used for
this purpose. She said she was
still glad to speak with me and share the information.
You can research this further on the internet by typing in Primarily
Primates in your search engine. It
is likely you will find the PETA stuff first. (They are very well funded.) You can find out a lot more about this
by going to www.friendsofanimals.org
. Definitely do the research. But if this is of importance to you I
suggest you contact Priscilla Feral.
It IS a big deal.
You see, PETA has tons of money available for this project, and it is a
huge publicity deal if they can take over this sanctuary. Even Jane Goodall, friend of Wally Swett
and supporter of the sanctuary, is standing back until this is resolved. It is such a big deal that they can’t
afford to get involved. And her partner, Mark Beckoff, is one of
the people who sent me to Primarily Primates for help in my project.
It’s too weird for me to even think about.
I hope that those of you who claim to
care about apes will consider becoming educated and will look further into the
situation and maybe even offer some help.
Peace.

like is the way he drew all the humans all nicely standing in a row, like they're just patiently awaiting the loading into the cages... That's total bull, I mean those humans are wild animals, and no wild
animal is just going to stand still like that, they'd be struggling to escape... (Unlress they're sedated, and if they were drugged, they'd be sleeping anyway, not standing in formation.)
It's been awhile since I read the book, but don't they have the "live ones" in sacks which they unload into the transport cages?( I know that at the institute, they move them that way...) That's
what he should have drawn, "human animals" in bags or at least in nets... I know he had to simplify the story some, but a more accurate aftermath of the hunt would have been nicer...

Well, I finally broke down and went to the local comic store... They did have REVOLUTION in stock (all issues but # 1)...
The guy said he knew he had them, but wasn't sure if he had them all, as he had to order them a few times already, so he wasn't sure what was left... I bought one issue of each available issue, so there were
three comic total left on the shelves... I asked if he could order me an issue # 1, and he said he had already ordered more issues of REVOLUTION, so he'd hold a copy of issue # 1 for me when it arrives with the
batch he ordered...
I haven't read them yet, and I will still stick to my guns that this is NOT the best idea for a story line, BUT it is good to hear first hand that APES comics are still selling well enough to mandate reordering
stock this long after they had stopped the series...
BTW: Is there any word on when that graphic novel is gonna be released?<.html <.html

Sort of...
After a couple of months of making sure I still had a career in mainstream comics (working on American Splendor, Howard the Duck, the Simpsons and a Vertigo title called "The Exterminators") I'm
back at Mr. Comics pushing the pencil and keyboard for our first issue of Hoverboy (and the stuff that's coming into the office this week is BLOWING THE BACK OF MY HEAD OFF, it's so good.) with many of the same
creators as were working on POTA. (Myself, Steve (Catch a Falling Star) Molnar, Bernie Mireault and others are pitching in on the boy that Hovers...)
We're looking at a Febuary release for Hoverboy #1 and probably will ship the POTA GN the same month. I wanted the GN available for Christmas, but our publisher didn't schedule it until later.
You'd have to ask him directly as to the specific dates he's planning for release on it, and why...I'm the content editor and scheduling dates is one step above my pay grade.
It WILL be coming out, I promise, or I'll print it myself.

.html
.html
Hey Patrick - see
if this gets through buddy!
I tried sending this pic to the POTADG, but Yahoo sez I can't send a
message with an attachment so that the whole shebang is 1 megabyte or
more. So, I tried to change the header pic for my POTA_Phenomenon group
and, lo and behold, the pic is THERE! I'll leave it up for a few months just
so that everybody who wants to can Copy it to their own computer.
The
following is the text of the message I tried to send to the DG along with
the
pic...
============ ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ====
I've
been drawing up blueprints for the ANSA vehicles shown in "PLANET" and
"BENEATH" of late. Here's a cleaned-up pic I scanned in today showing the
front cockpit area looking Forward. One of these days, I'm gonna invest in a
decent CAD program and draft blueprints in a 3-d wireframe format. Maybe my
relatives will get the hint and get me Lightwave (or whatever) for Xmas,
since that's just about the ONLY thing I really could use!
In the
attached pic, you'll notice that I didn't put in the two front chairs,
though I did put in the swivel-axis base for each. In the next pic I work
on, we'll see the same view but from further back in the cabin, where all
four chairs will be in view. You'll also notice ("behind" the two
swivel-axis bases) the Liferaft on the Port side and the four backpacks (2
behind the Liferaft on the Port side and 2 more on the Starboard side). I'm
assuming that the 4-person vehicle actually had 4 backpacks (2 on each side
under the cockpit console), and that the 3 survivors only took 3 of the 4
backpacks along.
As great -- and useful -- as Jim Key's blueprints are,
they are not quite accurate as far as I've been able to estimate. Of course,
he didn't provide any inside cutaway pics like this one (he only had two
cutaway views, one from the side and one from overhead). I've since
found that the 'topography' of the interior in his blueprints
(specifically, looking Aft at the rear wall where the pressure door is)
is unfortunately flawed, based on the on-set pics which can be seen at Phil
Broad's site and from frame-grabs showing the rear wall. More on this as I
post a pic-in-progress of that rear wall, soon-to- come.
I put in some
minimal detail on the cockpit's front two inner panels (Starboard and Port),
since those panels are seen face-on (though they're slanted 'up' at a 45
degree angle, of course). I didn't bother trying to draw the details on the
adjacent panels, since in this view they're seen at an angle. This is what a
CAD program would be great for, but is a pain in the ass using rulers and
templates with pencil and pen! Since the Microphone is on the Starboard
adjacent panel, I didn't draw it in (though I probably should have). I
just didn't want to obstruct the window, which I had already drawn in
ink.
One other note: I didn't draw in the side wings -- just the cutaway
of the ellipse-section. I drew this pic on a sheet of 8.5" by 11" paper,
and the largest ellipse on the ellipse template has a Major Axis of 253
millimeters (corresponding to 6 and 13/25ths feet), and a Minor Axis of 163
millimeters (corresponding to 10 and 3/25ths feet). The pic, thus, has
dimensions of just under 10" (Major Axis) and just under 6.5" (Minor Axis),
where 25 mm on the pic equals 1 foot. I didn't have enough room on the
11"-wide page to include the triangular wings in the cutaway. Perhaps later
I'll redraw this pic and include the wing-portions in the
cutaway.
That's all for today. I'm off to see "CASINO ROYALE" which my
Bond- fanatic brother tells me is one of the top 3 Bond films ever made (he
saw it last night). Well, I'll have to see it to believe
it...
Patrick

to helm the redo; Fox finally saw the light after it was too late. Anyway, some
POTA fans have held out hope Jackson would come back to POTA and, of course, Fox
will stay in the background while he creates a masterpiece ("King Kong" not
withstanding). After all, HE'S Peter Jackson.
Here's how far that gets him. Jackson has
released a statement saying that New Line Cinema, owner with MGM of the rights
to the "Rings" prequel "The Hobbit", has passed on his services as director of
the prequel. Apparently they are still engaged in a lawsuit over "Rings" profits
(Jackson says he hasn't been paid his fair share). So New Line is shopping for a
new director.
I find this pretty laughable. As far as I'm
concerned, New Line wouldn't have profits to squabble over if it wasn't for
Jackson. He's the guy who made those films what they are. Once again, Hollywood
can't see the forest for the trees. Sure, get some hack to do your prequel. I
just found this interesting. They never learn, do they? They think they can just
throw out a familiar title out there and spin gold. Maybe Tim Burton will do
"The Hobbit"?
Anyway, so much for Fox swooning if Peter
Jackson decided to do POTA. And for those who liked his "King Kong" or love
in-depth behind the scenes stuff, I recommend the new special edition of "King
Kong" that came out this week. - - - Jeff

I'll mention that Fox (and Universal)
have already passed on a Jackson project, his film version of the video game
"Halo" (as producer). So even Fox isn't impressed. Maybe "King Kong" has hurt
Jackson's invincibility. But, hey, with both "Halo" and "The Hobbit" shot down,
now he has time to do POTA. Those who want to read Jackson's letter about "The
Hobbit", www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/8/1163993546
