the art in some of the Adventure mini-series comics was good. One example, as
you mentioned, was Gary Challoner's art.

Must agree about the
umpiring – at critical times too – but they are neutral so it may
only be a matter of time before the favour is repaid!
Still, the Poms are the only team in the

That Lawgiver sub-story in issue 5 could have been flatout incredible if Neil drew it and probably cheaper to produce. I'd kick in an extra 5 dollars for the graphic novel if Mr Comics breaks the
artist Ken's hands or at very least gives him a stern talking too. ;)
Despite the shoddy artwork and the not so great storyline I'll still need to pick-up a couple copies of the graphic novel. At very least Ty created the best Apes comic ever made.
Why is Aldo drawn like a regular gorilla?

I think, particularly this day and age when we all own the film something you could only dream of in the 70's, that any comic has to be first and formost a good comic.
I've ranted about the tyranny of the photo in the past , it's just that if the comics are going to be "worth" some thing (I don't mean in a financial sense ) they got to bring
something to the table.
That Ploog shot, from Terror, of the secret gorilla base, the treehouses with a gorilla in the forground pointing off panel fantastic atmospheric stuff that only the comic could produce.
If I need my fix of the movie apes well I've got the films...
Best wishes Graham.

Take extreme caution with
this seller!
When I sent him $60US cash for the comic,
he waited months and told me it never turned up.
I had the sense to send the cash
registered, but there’s no paper trail for Hungary
so it was never proven
that he did or didn’t receive the cash.
Eventually, he got me to PayPal payment
for something here in Australia
and sent the comic after that was confirmed paid.
I strongly believe I was ripped off and I
would strongly urge people to be extremely careful if you do business with this
guy!

This is
another important point – can a POTA cartoon be permitted to be a
CARTOON?
I mean, when I watch BATMAN – The Animated
Series, well I know there’s a lot of silly stuff going on but I say to
myself “It’s only a cartoon” and I enjoy it for what it is.
Why do we take POTA so seriously?
Certainly not because the writers throughout the history of the series did! Maybe
because they didn’t?
It’s a good question hey?

I take APES seriously because of PLANET... Sure there may be a few scenes in it that should be forgotten (the "three apes in the courtroom"!), but that film really is a serious film... It deserves to be
looked upon as such, and I don't like when people look at it the way they do because of what they made APES into later on... That's not to say I don't like the sequels, I do, but after PLANET they lost a lot

As Neil mentioned, Kassidy's site has it; as I recall, it was primarily
storyboards for the Farrow-Spaceship scene.
Hey, the stuff is out there, and I don't see why we POTA fans can't
have our jones the same way that STAR WARS geeks get umpteen printings
of the STAR WARS screenplays with storyboard art and stills, etc etc.
Thank goodness for sites like Kassidy's which host these little nuggets
of POTA history on 'em. I may never have known of those storyboards if
it weren't for her site. "THE ART OF STAR WARS"... howabout "THE ART OF
PLANET OF THE APES" dammit!
How many OTHER storyboards are out there, I wonder? They must've done
them for the movies -- they don't just take a script and a camera &
lights and roll film. They PLAN each shot, and storyboarding has been
around since the beginning of Cinema, I'd wager. We've all seen the
preproduction artwork portfolio that Arthur P. Jacobs took around to
all the studios. And we've seen the Bill Creber blueprints of the ANSA
ship. But the storyboarding for the actual film... where ARE they???
Ah... the Fox vaults. We'll get to see all the official CIA files on
the Kennedy Assassination before we'll be privileged enough to see
every last nugget of POTA-related gold in the Fox Vaults, I fear.
Patrick
P.S. Has the cold-&-flu season kicked anybody else in the ass? Man oh
man, I've never been south of the Rio Grande, but I feel like I've
gotten a case of Montezuma's Revenge...! :(

Yes –

-- Speaking of Time of
the Apes did anyone else ever see this description / review of it by some bloke
who was selling it on eBay? Very funny:
"Back in the 60's the Japanese bought a load of
Planet of the Apes materials and decided to make their own version of the movie,
with interesting results, finally it's here, it's a classic and a must own, let
me tell you why!
Johnny (Masaaki Kaji) and Caroline (Hiroko Saito) are
annoying Japanese schoolchildren straight out of GODZILLA flick central casting.
Johnny has that round, moon face that suggests too many dumplings and a role as
the teenager Sammo Hung in a made-for-TV bio-pic while Caroline sports white
knee-highs, pigtails, and a denim jumper over a Holly Hobbie blouse, securing a
place for her in the hearts and minds of freaky Japanese schoolgirl fetish fans
everywhere.
While visiting the hi-tech lab of Uncle Charlie, the kids
and chaperone Catherine (Reiko Tokunaga) take refuge from an earthquake in
capsules that shield them from the falling debris, not to mention the danger of
that big cardboard "computer" catching fire from the blinking lightbulbs jammed
into it.
The good news is they survive the earthquake. The bad news
is they wake up several thousand years into the future on... wait for it... a
planet ruled by apes! (You were expecting something else from a flick called
TIME OF THE APES?)
What follows is one of the most entertaining "so bad it's
great" gems I've seen in years. All the cliche POTA subplots can be found in
abundance... the area the apes are afraid to venture into; Pepe, the helpful ape
child (played Kazue Takita), who looks like a kid in an Ewok mask; Godo, the
obligatory "wildman" (Tetsuya Ushio) who might as well come from a tribe called
"The Beatniks" with his turtleneck sweater and wild beard; in-fighting within
the ape community; and, oh, so much more.
Unlike "official" APES entries, TIME OF THE APES steers
clear of any "messages" like racial harmony, technology gone awry or man's
inhumanity to man for most of its 98 minute running time. That changes during a
revealing encounter between our "naked ape" humans and Police Chief Gebar (Baku
Hatakeyama), which is pronounced "Gay Bar" throughout the flick.
Thanks to some name-clearing footage provided by a
buttinsky of a UFO and the good-natured wisdom of the sartorially resplendent
Commander (Wataru Omae), our heroes are given the opportunity to live a life
that basically translates to "separate but equal" status. Until, of course, an
encounter with a supercomputer that explains (sorta) how apes came to rule and
gives our intrepid time-travelers a chance to travel even further into the
future or live life on another planet. Some choices huh!
What the computer does not explain is: how the apes came
into possession of leftover uniforms from a civil war re-enactment society; why
the Commander wears a costume that can only be described as Dolemite Meets
Colonel Sanders; what the origin of the CB antenna, um, I mean "laser whip" is;
how - if it's a few thousand years in the future - the apes are driving a fine
selection of 1960s/70s muscle cars; or, if Uncle Charlie's smoking around the
"highly sensitive" computer equipment had anything to do with thrusting our
heroes into the future.
With all the junk that's clogging up the 600 cable
channels we get, I find it hard to believe somebody wasn't willing to air the 26
episodes that make up the entire Japanese TV series from which this flick was
edited together. I guarantee it would immediately become my favorite show on
television!"
Neil
Or maybe you could do a TIME OF THE APES
featurette! <.html

I am hoping one day to find someone who

find out who to contact about the end of the Marvel run of comics.
I suppose one
person who would definitely know would be Doug Moench who wrote all the stories
for the POTA mag. Has anyone ever been in contact with him or know where to get
in touch with him?
Neil
I am hoping one day
to find someone who can tell me what Marvel intended to do with their POTA

I think Moench has been asked a couple of times about unused Marvel strips, possibly in the magazines Comicbook market place or comicbook artists, and doesn't remember much.I'll see if
I can find a quote.

*** Hey, Jeff, *I* got the card you sent me... "Citizen Cane" (... as
in a candy cane, held by an orangutan 'Santa'). Thanks!
As the Beatles used to say in their radio messages to their fans
(which I've heard played on some of our local radio stations), "Merry
Kringle!" What with all the hullaballoo regarding the so-called War
On Christmas that Bill O'Reilly and John Gibson at FOX News rant
about, lambasting those who say "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry
Christmas", I've taken to saying "Merry Kringle" in a Lennon-esque
voice.
A "War On Christmas"! HAH! War is the forcible seizing of territory
that doesn't belong to you, and Christmas has been stealing days from
the calendar for YEARS. Christmas itself is ONE DAY of the year, the
25th of December. Okay, throw in Christmas Eve, the 24th. That's TWO
days. Oh, but WAIT! There's those "12 Days of Christmas" like the
song says... now Christmas-Nazis have gobbled up nearly ONE THIRTIETH
of the calendar year! And THIS year, I swear, I saw Xmas decorations
in department stores even BEFORE Halloween was over! That's TWO
MONTHS of the calendar year -- ONE SIXTH of the year! AAAAAAUUUGHHH!
Christmas has annexed fully the last two months of the year, and then
some. Nobody in their right mind starts saying "Happy Valentine's
Day" in mid-December... but the Xmas-Nazis want to get everybody in
the Christmas spirit no later than the beginning of November. And I
say, "ENOUGH!" If there's gonna be this stupid so-called "War On
Christmas" then sign me up -- on the Anti-Xmas side! Call me a
Scrooge or a Grinch, I don't CARE! I HATE CHRISTMAS! I hate hearing
Christmas carols on the damned radio for WEEKS leading up to the
dreaded day!
The ONLY thing I like about the Yuletide season is to straighten out
all those Christians who think that "Jesus is the reason for the
season". A guy named James Arthur wrote a book titled "MUSHROOMS AND
MANKIND: The Impact of Mushrooms on Human Consciousness and Religion"
(if you do a Google search on it, you'll find the whole book online
with tons of color photos -- the printed edition I own is verbatim
what's on his website, and the photos in the book [except for the
cover photos] are all B&W).
The upshot of it is that "Santa Claus" is a Christianized
bastardization of a Siberian shaman -- who wore Red & White duds to
connect him with the Red & White 'cap' on the Magic Mushroom, amanita
muscaria, which contains psilocybin: a psychoactive substance which
gave people religious ecstatic "visions" millennia before
Christianity appeared on the scene. The shaman would eat the 'shroom,
have hallucinations that he can fly, etc. Those 'shrooms grow at the
foot of FIR TREES, and will be eaten by the REINDEER indigenous to
that part of the world unless they're harvested by people first.
Since a human hallucinates a "flying" experience after eating those
magic mushrooms, then it makes sense to think that a reindeer, too,
will "fly" after it eats 'em, right?
The constellation we call URSA MAJOR was called "the Wain"
(or "Wagon") by the Northern Europeans before the Greco-Romans
overlaid their own Mediterranean myths onto the constellations of the
Northern Sky. The "Wagon"/"Wain" is a circumpolar constellation,
going eternally round & round & round the Pole Star. The "flying"
shaman would hallucinate that he is riding in that wagon, pulled by
the "flying" reindeer, wearing his Red & White duds... flying his
wagon/wain/sleigh over the entire northern hemisphere (which wheels
beneath that constellation circling overhead).
Sound familiar?
When they picked those 'shrooms, they would hang 'em in front of
their hearth, to dry 'em out before they ingested them. Just like
Christmas stockings in the old "traditional" way!
Way back when, when Constantine adopted Christianity as the official
religion of the Roman Empire (325 A.D.), that new official state
religion tried to wipe out all "pagan" religions. It built churches
over the sacred sites of the "pagan" peoples... turned the "gods" of
the pagans into so-called Christian "saints" (like Brigid)... and,
when they couldn't keep the peoples of Northern Europe from
maintaining their ages-old "pagan" traditions, they "Christianized"
those traditions, to give them a false gloss of Christianity. That's
how a Siberian shaman became "St. Nicholas"/Santa Claus.
The original "present" under the tree, during the Yuletide season,
was the MAGIC MUSHROOM. It grows naturally under fir trees in
Northern Europe (or, "supernaturally" in that those magical plants
are not "planted" but appear miraculously... due to the fact that
they are the result of invisible spores generating seemingly out of
nowhere). Way before a priesthood was imposed on them, those peoples
would have experiential religious sensations -- all due to ingesting
the psychoactive substance psilocybin from those mushrooms.
Anybody today, in America, who would dare to re-experience the TRUE
meaning of those pre-Christian "Christmas" symbols, could get
arrested under the unconstitutional "drug laws".
Like I said, the ONLY think I still dig about the "Christmas" season
is the chance to blow the minds of the Jesus Freaks who don't have a
clue about the true nature of the all-too-"pagan" holiday that Rome
tried to smother with its innocuous Saint Nick bastardization.
They'll never look at their "Christmas" tree the same way...
All the same, though, thanks again for the card, Jeff. I may be a
tired-of-Xmas heretic, but I still appreciate a kind thought!

The bottom of Taylor's starship revealed (Planet of the
Apes)

There's a lot of discussion in Planet of the
Apes fandom about what the back end of Colonel Taylor's ANSA
spaceship looked like. The ship is only ever seen partially submerged in water
in the film (at Lake Powell), so the details of the rear end have been left
mostly to the imagination. William Creber, the gifted art director who designed
it (he also designed the original miniature of the spaceship from Lost in Space, another of my favorite
ships) has said in interviews that not a lot of thought was given to the back
end because it wasn't going to be shown on screen.
I've never seen the image above anywhere else, and so I thought I'd share it
here. Where's it from, you ask? Actor Roddy McDowall's home movies of the
making of the original Planet of the Apes,
from 1967, included on disk number two of the Ultimate
Planet of the Apes collection Fox released in an ape-head case
earlier this year. Not that the spaceship -- which fans have dubbed Icarus, although that name isn't canonical
-- is pointed out in the home movies; it isn't and McDowall doesn't seem to notice
it himself.
The above is a detail of some footage, at about the 9-minute, 10-seconds mark
into the home movies, of a helicopter flight from the Fox studios that McDowall
was on; the ship, seen standing on its end outside a building labeled
"20" is visible for just a few seconds in a small part of the movie
frame. Note the white car just to the right of the ship for scale.
I captured this from the DVD, cropped it, and offer it here as my little
contribution to the ongoing discussion of what the back end of the ship looked
like before it was re-configured to be Brent's ship in Beneath the Planet of the Apes or
truncated, with the rear end shortened and a rounded heat shield added, in Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
As you can see, each of the big fins has what appears to be an engine nozzle
sticking out of it, very near the tips of the fins. We know from the final film
that the nose cone (the tip at the top) is gold in color; it looks like the
engine cones are about the same color here.
