interesting! Pity there is no way to get a better picture.
What is speculated
at as being "an engine nozzle" though could very well just be where they
attached the wire to moor it in the lake and the grey bit at the base could just
be the concrete used to weigh down the rear end.
And I'm pretty
sure I've read or heard a Bill Creber quote along the lines that they didn't
bother designing the rear of the ship as they always knew it would never be seen
on film.

The bottom of
Taylor's starship revealed (Planet of the Apes)

There's a lot of discussion in Planet of the Apes fandom about what the
back end of Colonel Taylor's ANSA spaceship looked like. The ship is only ever
seen partially submerged in water in the film (at Lake Powell), so the details
of the rear end have been left mostly to the imagination. William Creber, the
gifted art director who designed it (he also designed the original miniature
of the spaceship from Lost in
Space, another of my favorite ships) has said in interviews that
not a lot of thought was given to the back end because it wasn't going to be
shown on screen.
I've never seen the image above anywhere else, and so
I thought I'd share it here. Where's it from, you ask? Actor Roddy McDowall's
home movies of the making of the original Planet of the Apes, from 1967, included
on disk number two of the Ultimate Planet
of the Apes collection Fox released in an ape-head case earlier
this year. Not that the spaceship -- which fans have dubbed Icarus, although that name isn't
canonical -- is pointed out in the home movies; it isn't and McDowall doesn't
seem to notice it himself.
The above is a detail of some footage, at
about the 9-minute, 10-seconds mark into the home movies, of a helicopter
flight from the Fox studios that McDowall was on; the ship, seen standing on
its end outside a building labeled "20" is visible for just a few seconds in a
small part of the movie frame. Note the white car just to the right of the
ship for scale.
I captured this from the DVD, cropped it, and offer it
here as my little contribution to the ongoing discussion of what the back end
of the ship looked like before it was re-configured to be Brent's ship in
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
or truncated, with the rear end shortened and a rounded heat shield added, in
Escape from the Planet of the
Apes.
As you can see, each of the big fins has what appears
to be an engine nozzle sticking out of it, very near the tips of the fins. We
know from the final film that the nose cone (the tip at the top) is gold in
color; it looks like the engine cones are about the same color
here.

A quote from an essay I found on the web.
Interesting....
The movie
series played itself out, and although the conclusion was mired in cheese, it
was clearly the end. When I learned that they were planning a Planet of the
Apes TV series, I was very excited. With all that foolishness done, they could
get back to a good, basic story that just happened to be set on a planet where
apes ruled. Once gain, the possibilities for story lines was endless.
By the
time the TV series debuted, I was in high school. But still I was glued to the
set to watch the premier. I knew the show was doomed before the first station
break. While the writers could start off fresh, they somehow chose to start off
with a fresh set of humans crash landing on a fresh planet. The names were
changed, but the plot was the same. I was pissed. If the people controlling
this project had one ounce of originality they could have made the show into a
wildly successful science fiction drama. But they didn't. Having rehashed the
original scenario, they had to set it up so that it could continue as an ongoing
series. They did this by sending the humans on the run with their sole ape
compatriot. Every week they'd get chased some more, and barely escape with
their lives.
I was old
enough at this point that I started to understand some of the principles in writing.
I knew that this series had been taken in a direction that was doomed to
failure. It was the exact same thing with Battle Star Galactica. It debuted
relatively early after the demise of the original Star Trek. Star Trek became a
wildly successful show, but Battle Star Galactica fizzled and died. I knew the
reason was that the protagonists in Star Trek were successful, able-bodied
heroes. The show was fun to watch because it celebrated success and
achievement. Battle Star Galactica, on the other hand, was a rag tag band of
survivors clinging to life, forever chased by the forces of evil. No one ever
wants to watch that. The episodes weren't triumphant and life-affirming. They
were arduous strides in a prolonged death march where the protagonists somehow
manage to hold on to life for another week. That kind of story will never find
an audience. The Planet of the Apes series was doomed for failure from the
start, and I knew it. After the first few episodes I didn't even watch the show
anymore. It could have been so good, if only...

Nah –
the thing about Celcius is each measure is supposed
to be a more sensible one than imperial.
You guys did it with money –
dismissing the awkward pounds, shillings and pence.
You just have to forget the old and
embrace the new.
Everything is in lots of 10s, hundreds and
thousands (keep adding zeroes).
But to answer your question, you would
normally drop one degree at a time.
And zero is actually the point at which
water freezes.

Yeah
– was he ever referred to as GENERAL?
I must say – I have made this
mistake myself.

I like these APES heads you're designing...
But, I have to say, Urko is not a general! He is Chief of Security... He's
law-enforcement not military...

Salem that had this site set up with the t-shirts and links to pics
of his collection. I wonder why he is selling his stuff? I can't
believe some comic shop didn't outbid me on it. Its a huge collection
of some really great and many original pieces that I got an amazing
deal on. Anybody else feeling the need to unload their Apes stuff? I
know a wonderful home for them where they will be loved and taken
well care of. Muhahahahahaha!!!!

.htmlHi ,glad you like the Ape heads. He was reffered to as General Urko,
articles about the Tv show, etc it usually says General Urko.
Sometimes it just says Urko. Like this one I just copied quick when I
searched Planet of the Apes tv show on the web, this was the first to
come up............
Aired: 1974 - 1975
Show Type: Live Action
Country of Origin: US
Show Summary: En route to Alpha Centuri at the start of the 1980s, a
spaceship is somehow thrown forwards in time, and crashlands on a
strange planet. One of the astronauts is dead, but the other two
learn that it is 21 March 3085, they're on Earth, and the world is
ruled by apes. Upon their capture by the ruthless General Urko, Dr
Zaius's new assistant (Galen) discovers that there were other human
astronaut visitors, whose very existence was kept secret. He and
Zaius want to study them, but when Urko plots to have them shot for
escaping, Galen accidentally kills a guard, and becomes a fugitive.
Together, they search for the other intelligent humans they think
have survived, plus a way to return home. Cancelled after 15 weeks---

***Really? Official releases huh? If they are, they must be exclusive to the Australian (and/or maybe the UK) because I only know of two official release t-shirts for original APES (and they are the two SUNCOAST
movie comapany shirts released in about 1998...) All other APES Shirts are either bootlegs or are from that pota2001 mess...
As far as wearing them, if you'd ever decide TO wear them, just wear them on occasion and when you wash them wash them inside out in cold water... This saves the design... (Also, just let them air dry, the dryer
cracks the designs to...)<.html

.htmlI have to watch the Tv shows again,I wonder why they came up with that
General name then. He is also named GENERAL URKO on the old mego dolls
that came out when the show was airing, and the more recent Medicom 6
inch figures he is called General Urko also. I would think that was his
name if he was always called that in momost of the released products i
have seen, but then again maybe he was never called General in the
show, very interesting though .--- In PotaDG@yahoogroups.com,

that was carried over from general Ursus, as they did both have
virtually the same costumes.
And just because Urko is not named as a General in the TV show doesn't
have to mean that isn't a rank he has. Maybe the glyphs on his helmet
or collar denote the rank of general?

*** Exactly right, at least as far as the sloppiness part of it...
As far as virtually the same costume, that's iffy... I mean yes they both had the collar and helmet, but remember, Ursus had a very eloborate outfit compared to Urko, at least as far as the torso goes...
And just because Urko is not named as a General in the TV show doesn't

*** Here I can't say I agree... I mean yes he has the glyphs on his helmet and collar, but every line of dialog referring to his "rank" indicates he is Chief of Security... <.html

.htmlYea,could be. That makes sence about using almost the same costume,so
figuring he was a General also. But I would think that if one company
made this mistake, then someone would catch it, but instead he was
called General Urko on so many products.Anyway glad this was brought to
my attention,I have never even thought about it before, and it is
interesting.--- In PotaDG@yahoogroups.com, "Neil" <ntfoster@...> wrote:

Also, how much of this will be original material, not just stuff lifted from the internet? (Lifted things like, let's say the "aged Galen" transcripts, and the ever exciting "Here's what was on

My guess is that at the rate AC is printed, the people that subscribe won't see this issue until sometime in the summer of 2007 at the earliest...

remind you that issue 115 of the Marvel UK comic is now available to download
from Hunter's site.
I have no idea

Response to Mike mlccougar@...
from Terry Hoknes (editor of Ape Chronicles)
Hey Mike well I was sure surprised to see your
posts of complaints
But instead of being annoyed I just laughed and
grinned because in most cases I do agree with you!
But I will still try and defend myself here a
bit
For anyone who was part of Ape Chronicles in the
pre-internet days you will note that we were more important then and
definitely had a more consistent publishing schedule.
But as time went by I landed up doing all the work
myself and time grew thin as I never made any money.
It was just a labor of love which didnt work out
well at times cause I travelled for years and was never home to stay on top of
things. So issues became more sporadic.
Eventually the internet came along and with
everything free on the internet it became less important to put issues of AC
out. And simply put that with so much great stuff on the net
it is truly hard to come up with a lot of original material when i get very
little contributions.
Simian Scrolls is now a way better magazine in
content and appearance - mainly because numerous people are contributing giving
it variety and some life!
However I love my POTA and always want to make my
little contribution and keep the fire burning for something that was truly
important 15 yrs ago.
I checked my records and Mike, you paid for an AC
subscription on Sept 11 2000 - and yes it took you 4 yrs and 3 months to get the
6 issues you paid for. Based on business alone thats pretty lousy I
definitely agree! However I dont rip people off - I simply kept planning
to get issues out but just never had the time to do it. I was really
happy to get #37-39 out and I really liked them. I never intended to
give you the "runaround". I do apologize that you had to wait so
long to get the issues that you paid for. Because
of your thoughts I have realized it would be best in the future that I should
just sell new issues one issue at a time and not "memberships".
In fact I do keep very good records and there are
20 people that paid for issue #40 over 2 years ago that I still have on
file. I guess you could tell me to refund their money and I
would do so if they asked for it but they will be guaranteed to get their paid
issue when it finally sees daylight.
At one point in time AC was the only POTA related
item you could get. I think it had an important role in the early 90s -
the internet has made it a little bit obsolete - if you dont like the contents
though that is totally up to you to be critical. All I can say is I
wish more people would contribute and that would make it a better overall
fanzine.
And yes if nobody contributes or shows interest
maybe #40 won't see daylight for another 6 months!
Believe it or not it does take me a lot of work to
put an issue together whether anyone appreciates it or not.
So its way easier to NOT work on it but I really
want to.
In terms of content my overly thorough breakdown of
episodes is my favorite thing. And yes it might get ridiculous at times
but I will NOT stop doing that. If a chicken crosses the road I am
gonna mention it - everybody has analyzed Star Wars and Star Trek to death and
I'm trying to do my part with POTA.
I have sort of treated the "POTA Fan Club" as a
business mainly as selling POTA collectibles. Perhaps some things
are overpriced but in most cases not really. I have not actually
made any money - i've propably lost having things in stock. I really lost
out when I did my best to promote the 2001 movie and carry merchandise.
Nobody supported me and I had to clear out a ton of stuff at bargain bin prices
to get rid of it.
Simply put if you enjoy Ape Chronicles then I hope
you want future issues and if you dont then definitely pass it up. Its not
for everybody.
I am a very easy going open-minded person who lives
a very busy life. I go through fazes where I try to focus on POTA and then
I have to put it aside for other things in life. So at least I try to get
motivated.
I can't believe 15 years has gone by. The
world has changed as has POTA fans. Think how important these
yahoogroups have been for discussion. Well at one time Ape
Chronicles was the only way to have that discussion. Now I use the
fanzine as a way to summarize stuff and keep important POTA related items
together which does mean I include some reprinted items from the internet.
But anyways I look forward to more criticisms but since I am the editor I put
together things that I think should be saved in print. Many items that are
neat on the internet disappear after a time so I try to keep them saved
forever.
Anyways I've rambled enough - I look forward to a
heated discussion about all this and
I want to say thanks to Mike for being upfront and
honest about this.
It will give me ideas on how to hopefully make AC
future issues better than ever.

Well Neil and I would
happily contribute either an article, or a comic, or both.
And I’d like to nominate Neil to do
the cover!
Cougar, you should offer to help suggest
content that might be of interest. How about I send you that Creber interview
and you write out the text?
With all our differences, there’s
never any reason we, as fans of POTA, cannot get together and make something
excellent.

Terry,
There are a couple of other things you
might want to consider too.
Most importantly – what do you need
to charge and what can you therefore deliver (including Air Mail International Postage)?
I know there are a few people in the group
who have printer connections and if Simian Scrolls can be printed on that
quality paper with a colour cover and not lose money, then you should be able to
achieve the same!

a PAGE, of the TOP 10 POTA collectibles as voted by the collectors. This
page alone would outshine Sauseville’s book! Photos and maybe links
to where you can see colour photos on the web would be nice too.
Anthony George, Joe, Ken Taylor –
send these guys an email and ask them what are the 10 best POTA collectibles
and why and ask them for photos.
We could also look at the major list you
once compiled, and hyperlink photos to the list.....asking in the magazine for
photos of things you do not have.
Just a few ideas....

Well
Neil and I would happily contribute either an article, or a comic, or both.
And
I’d like to nominate Neil to do the cover!
Cougar,
you should offer to help suggest content that might be of interest. How
about I send you that Creber interview and you write out the text?
With all
our differences, there’s never any reason we, as fans of POTA, cannot get
together and make something excellent.

Hey Mike well I was sure surprised
to see your posts of complaints
But instead of being annoyed I just laughed
and grinned because in most cases I do agree with you!
But I will still try and defend
myself here a bit
For anyone who was part of Ape
Chronicles in the pre-internet days you will note that we were more
important then and definitely had a more consistent publishing schedule.
But as time went by I landed up
doing all the work myself and time grew thin as I never made any money.
It was just a labor of love which
didnt work out well at times cause I travelled for years and was never home to
stay on top of things. So issues became more sporadic.
Eventually the internet came along
and with everything free on the internet it became less important to put issues
of AC out. And simply put that with so much great stuff on
the net it is truly hard to come up with a lot of original material when i get
very little contributions.
Simian Scrolls is now a way better
magazine in content and appearance - mainly because numerous people are
contributing giving it variety and some life!
However I love my POTA and always
want to make my little contribution and keep the fire burning for something
that was truly important 15 yrs ago.
I checked my records and Mike, you
paid for an AC subscription on Sept 11 2000 - and yes it took you 4 yrs and 3
months to get the 6 issues you paid for. Based on business alone
thats pretty lousy I definitely agree! However I dont rip people off - I
simply kept planning to get issues out but just never had the time to do
it. I was really happy to get #37-39 out and I really liked
them. I never intended to give you the
"runaround". I do apologize that you had to wait so long
to get the issues that you paid for. Because of
your thoughts I have realized it would be best in the future that I should just
sell new issues one issue at a time and not "memberships" .
In fact I do keep very good records
and there are 20 people that paid for issue #40 over 2 years ago that I still
have on file. I guess you could tell me to refund their money
and I would do so if they asked for it but they will be guaranteed to get their
paid issue when it finally sees daylight.
At one point in time AC was the only
POTA related item you could get. I think it had an important role in the
early 90s - the internet has made it a little bit obsolete - if you dont like
the contents though that is totally up to you to be critical. All I
can say is I wish more people would contribute and that would make it a better
overall fanzine.
And yes if nobody contributes or
shows interest maybe #40 won't see daylight for another 6 months!
Believe it or not it does take me a
lot of work to put an issue together whether anyone appreciates it or not.
So its way easier to NOT work on it
but I really want to.
In terms of content my overly
thorough breakdown of episodes is my favorite thing. And yes it might get
ridiculous at times but I will NOT stop doing that. If a chicken
crosses the road I am gonna mention it - everybody has analyzed Star Wars and
Star Trek to death and I'm trying to do my part with POTA.
I have sort of treated the
"POTA Fan Club" as a business mainly as selling POTA
collectibles. Perhaps some things are overpriced but in most cases
not really. I have not actually made any money - i've propably lost
having things in stock. I really lost out when I did my best to promote
the 2001 movie and carry merchandise. Nobody supported me and I had to
clear out a ton of stuff at bargain bin prices to get rid of it.
Simply put if you enjoy Ape
Chronicles then I hope you want future issues and if you dont then definitely
pass it up. Its not for everybody.
I am a very easy going open-minded
person who lives a very busy life. I go through fazes where I try to
focus on POTA and then I have to put it aside for other things in life. So
at least I try to get motivated.
I can't believe 15 years has gone
by. The world has changed as has POTA fans. Think how
important these yahoogroups have been for discussion. Well at one
time Ape Chronicles was the only way to have that discussion. Now I
use the fanzine as a way to summarize stuff and keep important POTA related
items together which does mean I include some reprinted items from the
internet. But anyways I look forward to more criticisms but since I am
the editor I put together things that I think should be saved in print.
Many items that are neat on the internet disappear after a time so I try to
keep them saved forever.
Anyways I've rambled enough - I look
forward to a heated discussion about all this and
I want to say thanks to Mike for
being upfront and honest about this.
It will give me ideas on how to
hopefully make AC future issues better than ever.

Yes, this is an excellent book for fans of
Stan Winston but a bit pricey (about $50). Lots of rare photos. There's also
shots of Winston on the set of "Battle" and the TV show. Winston was a
struggling actor who went to see the original POTA movie and was inspired to try
being a makeup artist. The rest is history. Winston really wanted to do the new
POTA and spent a lot of his own time and resources developing ape concepts. He
seemed a shoe-in when Schwartzenegger was involved, since he, Winston and James
Cameron are really tight. But when Burton got involved the job reverted to ape
god Rick Baker.
Winston is best known for making "creatures"
such as "Terminator", "Aliens" and "Jurassic Park". His apes were mechanical
appliances that fit over the actors and he was working on a way for the actors
to manipulate it facially like makeup. - - - Jeff

The other day I saw the book "The Winston Effect", is a double page
dedicated to the test of The Planet of the Apes. The photos are very
detailed and in some pics the animatronic mechanisms for the movement of
the mouth are clearly seen. I always thought that the test was prosthetic
make up, But I was wrong. The aspect is very good, but I do not know how it
was in movement, I suppose that very good. Unfortunately I could not
buy the book. JR

Fans of the POTA TV show might want to check
out the current issue of "Premiere" magazine. In listing the best performances
of the year they include a short interview and picture of Jackie Earle Haley,
who's getting raves as a sex offender in the movie "Little Children". Haley was
a child actor probably best known as the punk kid in the original "Bad news
Bears"(1976), as well as "Breaking Away" (1979). He also was featured in "The
Legacy" episode of POTA as the lost boy Kraik. Haley is now 45 (!) and also was
in the Sean Penn movie "All the King's Men" this year. He can be seen on pg. 94
of "Premiere". He says the best acting advice he can give is "persevere". - - -

*** Whitty,
If you and/or Neil would do anything for AC, that might be what makes it palatable...
Anyway, normally I'd might consider your offer, but if I were to do it, I'd probably want to transcribe it for SIMIAN SCROLLS...<.html

*** Whitty,
So far you're two for two with your ideas! Hoknes should hand the reins over to you and you could get that ship steered to where it needs to be...
Anyway, I like this idea as well, and imagine how this article could look IF it were printed on quality paper with nice COLOR photos! i'd like to see it with actual photos in the article, not links to them...
(Yes, as hard as it to believe, there are still quite a few folks without the internet... And, there are some people like me who don't like the idea of having to set at the computer to look at things when it could
be printed on paper...)<.html

I hope you realize that cross posting like that (with a post from the pota group that is) is usually grounds for the keeper over there to ban or heavily moderate you... It happpened to me, Whitty I believe, and
someone else... Either way, good luck with your probation...

Was there ever a script developed for this project? I believe Arnold was
supposed to be in the Taylor role. How far did this project go before it
permanently floundered?
