I've been getting into imported candy bars lately.
Anyone had the Violet Crumble? I like to call it
Violent Rumble. Also Lee's Jaffa Bar. It tastes
like chocolate covered orange flavored wax. And
Violet Crumble tastes like chocolate covered
Styrofoam. And yet that's the appeal of these
candy bars. The unusual texture is what I
like about them. There's nothing like 'em!

Nah, not everything in the last twenty years has been bad...
MEDIA wise has bit for tthe most part, but collectibles wise, it's been good with the Medicoms, the Sideshow figures, even the infamous Heston cards, and so on...
And Willowape, sure, it has been nearly 40 years since PLANET was released, but not everything in the entire span since the film was released has sucked...

You're probably talking about most anything to come from the Planet of

Patrick
P.S. Here's me being Mr. thinks-he-knows-it-all... but as for me
being considered a Piscean, well, the pseudoscience that is Astrology
is full of crap. Because the Earth -- as it spins on its axis -- also
undergoes a precessionary wobble, the point in the sky where its axis
points undergoes a shift (called the Precession of the Equinoxes).
The upshot of it is that every 2,160 years (on average) the First
Point of Aries shifts through an entire zodiacal constellation. My
birthdate (March 1st) used to coincide with the Sun's appearance
against the backdrop of the constellation Pisces... I say it USED to,
but that was over 2,000 years ago. The Sun was ACTUALLY against the
backdrop of the constellation Aquarius on 1 March 1965 (my
birthdate), which SHOULD make me an Aquarian rather than a Piscean.
The Ancients knew about the Precession of the Equinoxes. Many of the
world's myths contain coded information about it (read "HAMLET'S
MILL" for all sorts of information backing up this assertion). Every
year the Earth's wobble precesses through 50 arc-seconds; that makes
an entire arc-degree in 72 years. The Ancients believed that it took
25,920 years for the Earth to undergo one complete precessional cycle
(called a "Great Year"). This ancient wisdom has been around for many
thousands of years.
So why the f*** don't modern Astrologers figure it in to their
horoscope calculations??? It's like modern physicists sticking with
only Newtonian physics and completely ignoring Einstein. Sure enough,
every goddamned horoscope column in the newspapers and tabloids list
those with birthdays spanning from mid-February through mid-March as
being under the sign of Pisces... and they're WRONG!!! How anyone can
believe in Astrology is beyond me. It's no more plausible than the
goofy goddamned beliefs of that Heaven's Gate cult... you know, those
morons who believed that a UFO was flying in the tail of Comet
Hyakutake, comin' to whisk away all True Believers, as long as they
were wearing their Nike tennis shoes and purple cape -- and drinking
their poisoned kool-aid. The brother of Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura
from STAR TREK) was a member of that cult, by the way. And he
gleefully joined in their mass-suicide pact. Yeesh! The shit some
people believe. It seems that the Final Frontier, for some, isn't
mere Space: it's the hollow space between their ears!

============================================================
*** I don't think the MPAA had an "M" rating for movies back then --
or, for that matter, now.
The ratings system I grew up with ran the gamut from "G" (for General
audiences) to "PG" (i.e. Parental Guidance suggested) to "R" (for
Recommended for those 17 years of age and up unless accompanied by an
adult) and the biggy: "X" (for adults only, due to sexual content).
They added "PG-13" less than 20 years ago (meaning you had to be at
least 13 years old to see the film). And, most recently, they added "NC-
17" for films that were to be considered restricted to those 17 years
old and older due to mature content that wasn't explicitly
pornographic. However, many theater chains didn't carry NC-17 rated
films due to the bias against "adult" fare, even though it was unfair
to label all NC-17 films as "adult" (i.e. containing prurient sexual
content). Just as most theaters stopped showing X-rated films in the
late 1970's, so too did modern theaters rarely allow NC-17-rated films
to be shown in theaters, which is one reason that many filmmakers are
so pissed off at the MPAA and its ratings system.
I have never seen a film rating of "M". I have seen -- in the ratings
boxes of TV shows, usually shown in the upper corner of the TV screen --
the ratings "TV-MA" or "V" (for MAture or Violence, etc). Shows
like "24" usually have 'em (like in the last episode of "24", where
Jack Bauer cuts off the finger of the Russian Consolate dude in order
to force information from him regarding the location of the 3 other
nukes that are out there...).
But those TV ratings symbols are more recent than the MPAA system that
was set up way back in the 1960's (I think it was), with Jack Valenti
overseeing it. They didn't have 'em back when "PLANET" was released in
1968. "PLANET" always had a "G" rating... though it almost got saddled
with a "PG" rating due to the use of the word "Goddamn" in the final
scene. Heston, though, argued that his character was literally calling
upon God to damn the human race for the sin of destroying their own
civilization -- and his argument won the day. Back in 1968, the "G"
rating didn't mean what it came to mean in the 1970's and 1980's: a
kiddie film. If "PLANET" had never been green-lighted back then... and
got green-lighted a decade later, showing up in theaters in 1978
instead, then it would've undoubtedly gotten a PG rating. The mere
sight of both Dodge and Taylor getting shot by rifle fire would've
mandated that! Not to mention Heston's bare ass in the Tribunal scene.

$97!
It wasn't that price when I
first saw the auction. I just hope that the winner and other bidders
realize that it is something that was put together by someone and not a
genuine article. Those descriptions can be misleading and if someone
doesn't know better..... well they end up spending $97.

Oscar night is long gone, but I'm surprised that no one here ever
brought up Jackie Earle Haley's nomination for best supporting actor
in Little Children. He played Kraik in The Legacy.
I haven't
seen Little Children but he got exception commendation for his performance
in a very demanding role. Never stood a chance to bring in the little
statue itself because of the way hollywood works of course, but at least
he was recognised.

Any
seen the movie and can comment on it? Curious
myself.

Well Neil, I have no problem with remakes,
sequels, movies based on TV shows, etc. as long as they are GOOD movies. There's
examples of good work in all those categories. "Original" ideas can be just as
bad. It always comes down to what the studios think will sell, and apparently
that's the dumber, the better. Jeff

Taken over the cover of issue 233 of Marvel UKs The Mighty World of Marvel, that is. After two issues of sharing the cover with the Hulk, the apes have this week's cover all to themselves. Inside is another
chapter of the Battle adaptation, plus a 2-page letter column.
Also this week, issue 5 of Simian Scrolls, a Battle for the Planet of the Apes Special, is now available to download. Thanks to John Roche and Dave Ballard and all the contributors to this issue.

Anyway I'll still
