know I found it a couple of years ago when I did a Google picture search for
Planet of the Apes. If I remember correctly it was a painting for some video
game cover or something like that I think.
It's not strictly
'Planet' but it's got apes with guns and that good old 'Apes orange sky' so I
thought it would be cool to use it.

it must have been something to do with the video game. I remember at
the time it reminded me of an old Exploited album cover:

Apes sequence:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/files/Jay%20%26%20Silent%

Though they shouldn't be using chimp actors, they're obviously fans and
the attention to detail is pretty good. Notice the Planet of the Apes
poster in the window of the video store.
And also that cheesey 'humanoid' song from Return to the Planet of the
Apes is in the 'Files' folder. <.html

.html Hey, Mike,
Unfortunately, I didn't type-and-save the text in an MSWord file
first and THEN do a cut-and-paste over to that APES FLICKS group's
message board... so I don't have the actual text of what I'd posted
there! Had I known the group would just go WHOOSH and disappear, I
would've at least done a cut-and-paste of the text onto a file that I
could keep on my harddrive.
As I recall, though, the main gist of the posts in question have to
do with the Mendez Dynasty and how I imagine the telepathic stuff all
played out.
As everybody here undoubtedly knows, the dude in BENEATH is named
Mendez XXVI -- implying that he's the last of 26 guys to share the
name "Mendez". But does that mean that there were other Mutant
Leaders who had some name other than "Mendez"...? If we figure that
there's roughly 2,000 years to cover, then 26 generations would each
be (on average) around 75-to-80 years' time!
In my scenario, the guy in BATTLE is Mendez I (i.e. Mendez the
First), and BEFORE the events of that movie he had already become
a "master telepath" -- either having been born that way, or (maybe)
having been transformed into it.
As a telepath, he can't help but sense the thoughts of others around
him. And, there are some people whose thoughts are, to him, rather
repugnant. Hateful thoughts "smell" bad, in a way, to him. For years
(after the 2006 nuclear war), Mendez pondered what he might do to
improve the "mental hygiene" of the community of survivors in the
city Breck once governed -- which, of course, is now governed by
Kolp... one of those whose 'hateful' thoughts smell especially
obnoxious to Mendez.
When Caesar and his fellow travelers show up in 2018, seeking out the
Archives, Mendez goes out of his way to vocally advise Kolp to let
the trio leave the city in peace. But Kolp -- ever the mistrustful
ape-hater that he is -- becomes single-minded: he believes that the
trio came to the city in order to exterminate those whom the Bomb
hadn't already killed. Like our current president, Kolp wants to go
on the offensive, to wage a pre-emptive strike that will exterminate
THEM before THEY can exterminate the radiation-scarred people of the
city.
Mendez VOCALLY expresses dismay at this... but deep down he WANTS
Kolp to lead all the belligerent types out of the city to go on a
foolish invasion of Caesar's "Ape" city. Because he knows that, deep
down, Kolp -- if he remains in the city -- will eventually go over
the edge and launch the Doomsday Bomb. Kolp has little to live for,
and the sudden appearance of Caesar's recon party gives him the ONE
purpose he'd lacked all those boring years. It breathes new life into
him, the idea of conquering Caesar's city, so that Man can regain the
upper hand by re-enslaving the apes. And... if that plan-of-attack
should fail... there's the Bomb. Kolp's own death-wish is something
he's likely to expand to include everybody else -- like those
psychopathic school-shooters who killed as many of their fellow
students as they could at Columbine and then committed suicide just
prior to being subdued.
Mendez knows that as long as Kolp is alive, the danger of him setting
off the Doomsday Bomb -- to put himself and the rest of the world out
of misery -- won't go away.
So... Mendez telepathically nudges Kolp along the path of Invasion
whilst vocally pretending he's against it.
But Alma represents a problem. She's entirely devoted to Kolp, and
she's more than willing to carry out her last orders: to fire off the
Doomsday Bomb when she gets Kolp's signal -- even though she doesn't
know that it would kill not only the Apes in Ape City, but every
living thing on the planet.
So, Mendez keeps an eye on Alma the whole time Kolp and his army are
gone... so that when Alma receives the 'signal' he can step in and
steer things the way he wants it to go.
Thus, at the low-point of Alma's life (and the lives of all the other
losers in that dead city), when she's almost eager to fire off the
Bomb... Mendez uses his words AND his telepathic abilities to seduce
her and the others into worshipping the Bomb, to revere it as a
sacred thing similar to the one that was able to flatten the once-
great city they live in.
Mendez doesn't worship the Bomb -- and doesn't INTEND to, either. He
merely wants to keep Alma from blowing up the world. He intends to be
the one truly "sane" person in the midst of a population of people
devoted to Peace -- people who've lost their last battle and seen how
their defeat has brought them to their nadir. He wants to build them
up again, but by fostering mental states that aren't obnoxious to
him. After all, as a telepath he has to endure their thoughts... and
he never felt better in his younger years than when he was amongst
people earnestly seeking communion with God, in church.
Eventually, he decides to find out just what it was in the Archives
section that Caesar had wanted to see... so he goes there and rewinds
the tape and hits the "play" button.
And he, too, becomes aware of the information that had been Top
Secret from all but the higher-ups in Government: that Apes not only
came to dominate Man in the far future, but that the Ape-onauts had
seen from the windows of the spaceship the DESTRUCTION OF THE WORLD.
The clues contained in that tape point to an invasion in the
year "3950" of a territory near to where the Ape-onauts lived. Seeing
that Cornelius and Zira wore clothing matching the style of clothes
Caesar wore on his excursion to the Archives, Mendez makes a sensible
mistake: he ASSUMES that Caesar's "Ape City" is located in the same
region where Cornelius and Zira will one day be born. He believes
that the Doomsday Bomb that currently is propped up in the old APE
MANAGEMENT facility will be detonated exactly where it is when the
gorilla army invades, some 1,932 years in the Future.
Mind you, in my scenario Breck's city is located at the site of the
current SAN SIMEON, about halfway between San Francisco and Los
Angeles, encompassing the town of Cambria and environs.
Mendez, then, wants to prevent that future invasion -- and Bomb
detonation -- from ever happening... from ever being able to happen.
He believes that if he can get the Bomb moved as far away as
possible, then the Ape community will never be able to invade, and
the Bomb will never be detonated.
So, he resolves to lead the remaining people from "San Simeon" back
into the subterranean tunnels from where the Bomb had come. Prior to
the Nuke War, or just soon after, the Bomb had been in one of the
stretches of tunnel in-between military bases, and eventually the
Bomb was brought as far westward as those tunnels went: to Breck's
coastal arcopolis.
Those military tunnels snake all the way from the West coast to the
East coast, with side branches leading to every major military base
AND to most of the major cities -- all as part of a plan to save
the "best" people in the event of a nuclear war: certain privileged
people would have about a half-hour's warning at best to get to a
reliable shelter, and only THEY know where the truly reliable
shelters are -- in the bunkers delved so deep below the surface that
no exploding nukes can ever harm them, many hundreds of yards below
the ground. People with the right "connections" would be allowed into
the secret entrances of those bunkers.
Mendez knows that there might well be many survivors living in other
sublevel bunkers between Breck's city and the furthest east locations
(i.e. Washington D.C., Baltimore, New York, etc), but he has the
telepathic ability to deal with them, come what may.
So, over the course of the next half-year (after the events of
BATTLE) Mendez leads the rag-tag survivors through those tunnels
across the country, delved during the Cold War unbeknownst to the
vast majority of U.S. citizens. They get to Washington D.C.'s lowest-
level bunkers and encounter the last survivors of the Federal
Government.
One of my posts to the APES FLICKS group concerned the Masks worn
(later) by the Mutants. I speculated that the Scientist group (from
the "LEGACY" episode) invented a material called "synthederm" --
artificial skin -- for use in Outer Space to protect astronauts from
extra-atmospheric radiation AND for use in places where background
radiation is higher than the "safe" amount (i.e. in a nuked site
polluted by fallout). The Scientists had invented not only synthederm
but also specialized garments intended to protect the body from
radiation exposure -- those long robes (etc) that Virdon and Burke
saw that holographic Scientist wearing. THIS is the connection
between those Scientists who buried the Vaults throughout the world
prior to the Nuke War and the Mutants from BENEATH who had inherited
the safety-garments (etc) and who wore them especially when in the
presence of the Doomsday Bomb.
Eventually, Mendez gets his people -- with their "god" Bomb -- all
the way to the subterranean ruins of New York City, thinking that
there's no way that Caesar's people will ever be able to follow (on
the surface) so far so as to colonize the territory near the surface
desert. Mendez thinks his actions have effectively prevented that
future detonation from ever taking place... not realizing that by
moving the Bomb from California to St. Patrick's Cathedral he's
actually acted to FULFILL the doom awaiting the world.
Mendez is a telepath... he wants to maintain his own existence as
long as possible -- in part, to see the world survive well past the
date Zira mentioned in that Archives tape: "3950".
But how? How can he live longer than an ordinary human lifespan?
As a telepath, he can "get inside a person's head" -- like
the 'Negro' mutant when he takes possession of Brent and tries to
drown Nova in that fountain. But he can't remain inside another
person's brain too long; the personality he attempts to supplant can
exert a force to "reject" his intrusive Mind. ["Get OUT... GET OUT OF
MY HEAD!!!"]
But a baby doesn't have a personality. Especially when that baby
hasn't been born yet.
Alma, just before Kolp left with his army to attack Caesar's city,
had been "intimate" with Kolp... and during the long journey to New
York City she'd been pregnant, Kolp's biological son gestating in her
womb.
Mendez wants to live longer than nature designed the human body to
live, to perpetuate his own Mind beyond his 'allotted' lifespan.
So he hijacks Alma's baby's brain, imposing his own Mind, his own
Personality onto it. Mendez goes into a coma -- that is, his older
body does -- while his Mind is copied (telepathically xeroxed) onto
the brain of the fetus developing in Alma's uterus.
Alma, being physically connected to her preborn son AND subliminally
telepathically connected, achieves a kind of mental union with her
baby... and 'infects' the Mind of Mendez (Mendez II, Mendez the
Second) with the insanity he'd nudged her to adopt: the Worship of
the Doomsday Bomb.
Mendez hadn't intended for HIMSELF to believe that the Bomb was
a "divine" thing, a "god"... but he ends up being compelled to share
Alma's religious fervor, due to the maternal connection she shares
with her developing baby.
Thus, Mendez II himself is born as a "true believer" -- he's a mental
carbon-copy of his former self. He had intended to "copy" his Mind
perfectly onto the brain of the unborn baby... but the copy was not a
bit-by-bit exact digital copy. Most of his memories transfer over,
but some memories are mis-remembered, imperfectly copied onto the new
storage medium. As "Mendez II" he would compose the Hymn we hear
during the Mass of the Bomb, played by the organist and sung by the
masked adults as Brent and Nova watch...
And... from that point on (i.e. from 2019 until 3955) Mendez will
live out a 'full' life, averaging about 77 years per "incarnation"...
then telepathically "reincarnating" again and again through the
course of those 1,936 years... making psychic "jumps" through 25
other bodies, hijacking the brains of 25 preborn babies in
succession, once every 77 years or so, on average. And each new
lifespan will be an imperfect telepathic "copy" of the previous one,
so that by the time he becomes Mendez XXVI, he barely remembers any
of his first 'life' as Mendez I (or, as plain "Mendez").
One important aspect to this scenario, of course, is that none of the
Fugitives living in 3085 would ever have an "encounter" with the
telepathic mutants, since their adventures are in the California
region -- and the Mutants had long since traveled to the East Coast.
The most Virdon & Co. would ever find is the remnants of their
abandoned home in the subterranean ruins of San Simeon -- if, that
is, they ever do find that place. The only way they could ever
encounter "Mendez XIV" (the 'copy' of Mendez living in 3085) is if
they were to travel all the way across the country.
But I'm not gonna have that happen in my plotline; one reason being
that the MEMORY of such an encounter would probably remain in the
mind of Mendez XIV... so that it could be (imperfectly) re-remembered
870 years later, in 3955, when other ANSA astronauts eventually find
their way through the tunnels of New York City and in their clutches.
There's a lot more to my Mendez-dynasty stuff, but I've typed enough
here to keep you all busy for a while! So, I'll sign off for now.

Bravo!!!
Thanks for another great post. No one fills in the missing gaps of Apes

I had never heard of this APES FLICKS group before (interesting how FLICKS
looks like another word when you type it in caps, oh well...).
If anyone has some saved posts from that group that are of interest, I
would love to see them.

scenario on that very APES FLICKS group in response to questions regarding
the Mendez dynasty, Zaius, etc.
If the owner of that now-defunct
group is a member of this group, it'd be nice to hear an explanation as to
why it just disappeared into thin air, like Taylor and those 11 gorilla
Scouts...

Though they shouldn't be using chimp actors, they're obviously fans and
the attention to detail is pretty good. Notice the Planet of the Apes

And also that cheesey 'humanoid' song from Return to the Planet of the
Apes is in the 'Files' folder.

I have a sealed copy of this album which I've (naturally) never listened to. It says the music is by the Wonderland Orchestra and Singers, but the back of the cover shows the common Star Trek/Planet of the Apes
album with Apes' Shuffle by the Jeff Wayne Space Shuttle. Both were produced by Ralph Stein, so it's a safe bet they're the same recording.

I don't know if it was there earlier, but Apes' Shuffle and the theme from Baretta are playable from the auction page. It's definitely the "Jeff Wayne" version of Apes' Shuffle.

Yeah, Marvel would do a "test" price increase quite regularly in the 70's, a small percentage of a run or title would have a 30 cents price tag rather than 25 cents say and have
distribution to only a small area so they could see if the increase effected sales.
There's a price variant on Marvel's StarWars #1, 35 cents instead of 30 , which there's estimated to have been about 1500 printed.
Back to Adventure, I'm fairly certain there were 3 price variants #5, 6 and 7.
Best, Graham.

It's an American LP, but there's never been an American show called just "Down Under" or one called "T.V. Heroes" that I can find.
The Star Trek/Planet of the Apes LP included a couple of filler songs that falsely claimed to be from Planet of the Apes, but it's odd that they would do the same for a compilation of TV themes when there were

As usual I bow to your superior knowledge in these comic
matters.

Yeah, Marvel would do a "test" price increase
quite regularly in the 70's, a small percentage of a run or title would have a
30 cents price tag rather than 25 cents say and have distribution to only a
small area so they could see if the increase effected sales.
There's a price variant on Marvel's StarWars #1,
35 cents instead of 30 , which there's estimated to have been about
1500 printed.
Back to Adventure, I'm fairly certain there were
3 price variants #5, 6 and
7.

It's an
American LP, but there's never been an American show called just "Down
Under" or one called "T.V. Heroes" that I can find.
The Star Trek/Planet of the Apes LP included a couple of filler songs
that falsely claimed to be from Planet of the Apes, but it's odd that they
would do the same for a compilation of TV themes when there were so many other
crap shows to choose from.

It sounds like Jackie Earle Haley ("Kraik")
is up for the role of Rorschach in the film version of "Watchmen". It's being
directed by Zack Snyder ("300")."Watchmen" is considered by many to be, well,
the Shakespeare of superhero comics so it's a good break for him. The Oscar nom
for "Little Children" is really opening up his career.
Also in the world of big budget casting, Tim
Roth (Thade) will be the villain Abomination in the "Incredible Hulk" movie (a
reimagination of the '03 "Hulk" movie with a new cast); and Helena Bonham Carter
(Ari) has joined the "Harry Potter" world.
Finally, I was watching "60 Minutes" last
night and they showed a DHL commercial where a precious plate is shipped and
arrives in one piece, only to be broke as tradition at a wedding or something.
The guy who breaks the plate is Buck Kartalian (Julius in POTA). So you can
watch for that. Jeff

I am looking forward to this story (as well as the other stories).
I am curious on how Galen a chimpanzee, despite being in great if not better
shape from being on the run for years with Virdon and Burke getting lots of
exercise and on a meager, healthier diet, smaller and weaker than Urko a big
strong gorilla murder him when Aboro and Dako from THE TYRANT could not.
How would Galen get away with it? Would Urko be suspicious and cautious of
Galen and keep close eye on him? There is a saying, "Keep your friends
close, but your enemies closer". How did Galen get Urko's position if Urko
had sons, brothers, male cousins or close friends he would want to take
over? Is all this going to be explained in the Going Home saga?

Maybe this is
how it all starts:
Human-animal embryo tests
'vital'
Medical research using hybrid
embryos that are a mixture of human and animal is "vital" in the fight against
disease, scientists have said.
The Academy of Medical Sciences
said it backed the draft Human Tissue and Embryos Bill allowing embryos that
were 99.9% human and 0.1% animal.
Under plans, it would be illegal
for embryos to grow for more than 14 days.
The report says that, in the
future, the "true" hybrids - containing more animal DNA - may be vital for
research.

*** As far as Galen being in good shape, I doubt that... I mean yes he may be active he's always moving, but I really doubt they'd have anything remotely close to a "healthy diet"... You have to
remember that they are on the run, depending on whatever they can find to sustain them (along with the occasional handout or "work for food" they could get...) Their diet would be very spotty, maybe enough to
keep them alive, but very far from healthy...
And as far as Aboro and Dako's inability to kill Urko: It had nothing to do with their lack of skill or ability to do the job, they probably would have succeeded if not for the fugitives stepping in...

I think Patrick has come up with a fantastic scenario here. 'The passing on' of

So what if it
isn't 'canon' it still makes a lot of sense and expands the story of the mutants

Well,
I seem to recall reading Patrick’s
post years ago and reacting somewhat as Mike has here.
However, now that I think hard about all
this I reckon there’s nothing wrong at all with what Patrick says.
My real beef, and I think Mike’s real beef, is with Beneath! Those
darned mutants – I mean they make no sense at all! What Patrick
says here is not far fetched when you consider the mutants and their doings.
That said, they were also the thing that
first amazed me and drew me to POTA. When I saw Curtis (MARVEL) #8 (the
US version) at
my local newsagent, it was the mutants removing the masks that really blew me
away.
I don’t know if it’s because I‘m
and Aussie or coz I’m ignorant, but I knew NOTHING of nuclear weapons at
the time. As I discovered POTA I learned heaps about nukes and the cold
war.
Anyway…..play nice guys and thanks
for popping up Patrick!

The Battle book, which was the regular version as sold in bookstores,

Bet you thought you were all done with hearing from me every week, weren't you? Well, even though I'm on a break right now, the rest of Apes Fandom marches on, and there's new stuff available on
Hunter's site this week.
First off, Tim Parati continues to add to the growing collection of international Apes comic covers. Covers from Argentina, Australia, Finland and Sweden have recently been added. Thanks to Tim and also to Dave
Ballard and Mike Whitty for these.
James Aquila has picked up the gauntlet with regards to scanning Marvel PotA comics. He's started scanning the Adventures comic, which reprinted the adaptions of the first two films in color. Issue 1 is
available to download now. And finally, Hunter has added a 1998 interview with Roddy McDowall from issue 26 of Scarlet Street magazine. Greg

The way we had it planned, Urko was not
happy with Galen’s return to Ape
City , and the two
feuded. Urko plots to murder Galen, and fails, then kills Galen’s
father. This is an old tae, one of revenge and bloody murder. Urko
is many years older, and what Galen lacks in physical strength is more than
compensated by the technological marvel Galen has discovered from the
apes’ past (use your imagination here – I’d hate to spoil
it!). Donna – really – USE YOUR IMAGINATION!!! J
Or maybe I’ll utilise the classic
weapon of choice for David (vs Goliath) to portray how easily giants fall and
become food for worms.
As for getting away with it – how
did Adolf Hitler get away with it? I’d draw parallels to him before
getting too surprised.
As for keeping friends close, and enemies
closer – do you really think a meathead like Urko would reason in such a
way? I sincerely doubt it!
The real problem with writing POTA TV
Series stuff is that the people who like the TV Show still probably don’t
want the savage twists and turns I’m offering. I can understand
that and I hope you can understand why – for the TV Show to have a chance
in hell of breaking into today’s comic book market – it would need
to be NOTHING like the 70s series. Might as well do a LITLE HOUSE ON THE
PRAIRIE comic! J

I’m watching it and isn’t it
great?
Neil has seen up to “BLINK” –
my fave so far – and we’ll be watching that and the first two parts
of the three part conclusion on the weekend.
How about Sally Sparrow? I reckon she’ll
be a new spin-off character…

-- It's not
just fans of the TV show though is it? Some of us refuse to allow anything
Apes to be tampered with. Look at reactions to the Brokensea audio for an
example. I know I have stated on here that I don't like it but that's not
because it is 'different' and 'changes' the story but because I personally
think it is badly 'acted' and quite boring with the extra 'scenes'
adding naught to the story but I still applaud the guys for having the balls to
try something new.
Neil
The real problem with
writing POTA TV Series stuff is that the people who like the TV Show still
probably don’t want the savage twists and turns I’m offering. I can
understand that and I hope you can understand why – for the TV Show to have a
chance in hell of breaking into today’s comic book market – it would need to
be NOTHING like the 70s series. Might as well do a LITLE HOUSE ON THE
PRAIRIE comic! J

have that much around Bury where I lived either, the Uk comics of course as well

most of the paperbacks and a foam face finger puppet. Oh and the TV show
cards, but they stopped getting them in long before I could get the whole

We did of course
have the Fan Club and the Live show which was pretty cool I
suppose.

Yeah and the
UK had more than AUS too.
I only found the
series 2 Megos in
1993!

I’d just settle for the writer being
a fan and re-doing POTA.
I’m a huge fan of Classic Dr Who but
this new stuff blows it away.

Why don't you and Neil (and any other Dr. Who fanatics) come over to the Mego Museum? There's a few fanatics on there right now that I'm sure would like to debate Dr. Who with you...
