.htmlFinally, a link that worked for me. This was amazing!! Quite a lot of
really fantastic Ape art. There were several pieces by Steve
Caballero. He is the Pro Skater that shot the video of himself in
full Ape makeup & Conquest jumpsuit skating a half pipe ramp. He has
had Planet of the Apes themed boards that he has designed himself &
must be one hell of a fan. I've never been lucky enough to snag one.
Thanks for sharing this. This was great!!!!!

===============================================================
*** You're most welcome, Dave. And, hey, you're being more kind than I
deserve to say that "no one out there ... could have written it
better!" I'm sure that others (Rory, for one) know much more about
Heston's film career than I, and could've written more in-depth about
it. Most of my comments regarding his film career centered on the APES
films and his most popular other roles.
Did anyone see the TCM interview with Chuck that they did several years
back? TCM reran it within a few days of Chuck's death, and I rewatched
it. It was especially poignant to see when they talked about the scene
in "SOYLENT GREEN" where Edward G. Robinson's character (Sol) is
euthanized... a scene which happened to be EGR's final filmed scene (he
died I think it was 12 days later), a "death" scene. Heston remarked
that he and Eddie G. had great chemistry together on-screen, which I
agree with. It was kind of spooky to see Heston talk about a final film
performance -- of a death scene -- just a few days after his own death.
I wonder... is his cameo in Tim Burton's POTA film Heston's final on-
screen death-scene? I would have to check the IMDB to be sure, but
somehow I really don't want to go to the trouble.
One thing I've wondered about Heston, and will never know now: What did
he think of the spoofs comedians have done of him? Remember Phil
Hartman on SNL doing an impersonation of Chuck? When Chuck hosted SNL
he worked with Phil Hartman, I remember, in a skit where he (Chuck) is
an employee of a supermarket whose boss (Phil) is hinting he'll be "let
go"... and Chuck's character starts making all sorts of threats, like a
guy about to "go postal" (and he ends up keeping his job, with a
raise!).
In the skit where Phil portrayed Heston, as I recall, Mike Myers was
the host of some interview show with "theater" people, and Phil's
portrayal of Heston was hilarious. I've seen a few other comedians
impersonate Chuck (i.e. on "MAD TV"), but none did it better than Phil
Hartman.
Considering that Hartman died from a bullet fired from one of his own
guns (shot by his drugged-up mess-of-a-wife Brynn), I wonder if such an
incident ever gave Chuck pause for thought in regards to his NRA
stance? I can't imagine what that might've been like, knowing that an
actor whom he had worked with... who had (comedically) impersonated him
on SNL... had died in such a manner.
This is getting depressing...
One last (and better) thought: I read in the paper that one of his
friends -- soon after learning that Heston had been diagnosed with
Alzheimer's Disease -- was with him on a plane ride, and Heston asked
him, "Are you feeling sorry for me?" His friend replied in the
affirmative, and Heston responded (in words to this effect): "Don't. I
got to be Charlton Heston for 80 years." As it turns out, he lived to
be 84 years old when he died. And he considered himself lucky to have
had the life he'd lived, even in the face of his "last chapter" being
Alzheimer's. Considering that he had what may very well be the longest
happy marriage in Hollywood history... that he had opportunities to act
in some of the greatest films (getting to "play" in the truest sense of
the word)... well, in spite of whatever bad luck he may have had to
face towards the end, he WAS a damned lucky guy.

.htmlOkay, folks, I'm askin' for some help here.
For some reason -- and I can't, for the life of me, figure it out -- I seem to recall reading either in one of Effinger's novelizations or in one of the TV show teleplays some reference to the astronauts
having participated in a "Mars run"... a "Saturn run"... something like that.
The trouble is, I've scanned through my Effinger novelizations and my TV show scripts... and I just can't find the damned passage. I'm starting to think that it may
have been a detail written in one of the many fanfics over on Kassidy's site... but some goofy part of my brain is telling me that it predates all this internet stuff!
I don't remember, offhand, ever seeing such a reference in the actual aired TV episodes... but I would have to watch 'em all again, just to be absolutely sure of that!
Help me out here, people. Does anybody here know the reference I'm talking about? I think
it was a reference (spoken by Burke...?) regarding a "Mars run"... supposedly one of the astronautic endeavors he had participated in prior to the Alpha Centauri mission. I could
just be losing my friggin' mind, but Geez Louise, it's like it's on the tip of my tongue. I did a Google search and came up empty. Maybe somebody here has the crucial clue...?
ARGGHHH! HELLLLLPPP!
Frustratingly yours,
Patrick

Hard to say. Most circus wagons look alike
and for good reason. They're a cage on wheels.
I can definitely say it's not the wagon from Beneath.
I know that doesn't help. Screengrabs anyone? Bueller?

I see they say it appeared in Escape so I assume they mean a circus wagon as you say T ...
could they mean the wagon at the end with baby Ceasar/Milo ?
I think the wagon from Planet (Could be Beneath) is owned by a UK fan Shane Richie...
It was going to be a centre piece of the Ape show at the spring Memorabilia show 2007 in Birmingham.
I think Dave B will have more details on that one.?

You know I just don't read things carefully enough...I didn't see that it said "Escape"...so it probably was one of Armando's wagons....ALthough it looks pretty
different from this one....

Tell me about it !!!

I think most of us fall into the same trap... the curse of the inter-net !!! ...one of the reasons why I don't think printed books are going to disappear any time soon is we just
don't read the same off of a screen.

.htmlWell even your just messin' about paintings in progress amaze me.
Love the $100 bill with Zaius on it.
My original design for the Caesar Christ idea was a very traditional
piece with Caesar sitting on a throne very Christ like...
<img
src="http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e375/drzaiusdavis/Ape%
20CULT/JesusCaesarbw.jpg">
My friend Eric who did the tattoo asked if he could play around with
the idea I had of treating the Apes saga compared with the Holy
trinity & he redesigned it. After a few drinks one night it blew up
into the sleeve design of Caesar as Christ, Zira as the Virgin Mary,
the Lawgiver as the Holy Ghost & Taylor as Satan. Its gotten a lot of
attention I assure you. ;)
Hey, I wonder if I can milk this the way Eric Greene did his
political views of Planet of the Apes? Maybe I'll be doing commentary
on the new Blu ray discs!! Muhahahahahahaha!!!!!

Yeah I've got to get back to this one.
This is a sketch/ photo shopy thing just to try and see what direction to go in.
I kind of like it like this though, trying for a much more graphic look so I think I'll keep this one.
Now the "real" painting is stuck at one of my underpainting stages... not really sure how to proceed with it.
(It's a quite small picture just a4 size which really doesn't give me a lot of room when I'm slopping the oil paints about !! too fiddley (SP) the idea was, because it was
small it would be quicker and less of a problem scanning, no such look.)
I'll try and do a quick scan and play to show you what it sort of looks like at the minute.
Not really done for anything special ... you know, might come in handy one day.
Best,Graham.

This post concerns my POTA scenario, so those of you who don't dig it might as well ignore it. Otherwise, read on...
In the beginning of the 3rd movie, after the ANSA ship is beached with the help of a cable attached to it, reeled in by a winch on a halftrack, a helicopter lands on the beach between the shoreline lined with soldiers
and the sloping cliff. A Sergeant sees the 3 officers get out of the helicopter, then tells his commanding officer, "The General, sir."
In the screenplay, this "General" is referred to as a "Colonel" instead. And Jerry Pournelle's novelization makes this character out to be an "Admiral Jardin". But, as far as I'm
concerned--and for the sake of my anal-about-the-onscreen-details--the guy's a General, and that's that!
The President, later on, tells the Joint Chiefs (etc) in his Oval Office the next day that the mysterious spacecraft was "one of two" that had "gone missing" [the TV anchorman reports that the two
ships were said to have disintegrated in orbit]... in specific, the one commanded by Colonel Taylor.
Of course, the filmmakers intended for us to think of this ESCAPE ship as if it were the same ship we saw in PLANET (and not
the one we saw in BENEATH)... but, as we all know, the niggling differences between the PLANET ship and the ESCAPE ship are too important to dismiss. The ESCAPE ship has its front hatch still attached... Dodge had
"blown the hatch" of the PLANET ship. The ESCAPE ship has a gull-wing portside hatch in the cockpit... and the PLANET ship didn't
. And--if we are to take the interior cockpit images of the ESCAPE ship (see Phil Broad's site) as "canon"... then this ship had only 3 seats in it, just like the ship Virdon commanded. And unlike
the opening images of PLANET, with its 2-port and 2-starboard sets of chairs. Etc etc etc.
My scenario has it that Virdon's ship lifted off from Cape Kennedy in late 1971, to make a Jump (or warp journey) to the Alpha Centauri system, which it would reach after a few days of SHIP-TIME... during which
about 9 years of EARTH-TIME would go by, so that they would arrive there in 1980 (as the opening credits shows).
Then, according to my scenario, Taylor and two male astronauts [undoubtedly Landon and Dodge], wearing full-pressure suits with helmets
, lifted off from Cape Kennedy in mid-January of 1972. Their mission--as far as the public would be told--was to do a fly-by around the Moon in preparation for the "Moon landing" that the TV announcer in
ESCAPE will eventually mention. Their real
mission is to rocket to the farside Lagrangian position and--when nobody on Earth can see them--proceed to make their Jump to the site in the Solar System where their Orion Mission command ship has just finished
its construction phase. For a number of reasons, I've chosen to make that site the Lagrangian point [or, gravitational libration point] between the Sun and Jupiter.
The public would be led to believe that this supposed NASA mission resulted in the 3 astronauts dying
when the ship [actually, only a booster] plows through the atmosphere on re-entry, burning up. As the TV reporter says, it was thought to have "disintegrated in orbit". In reality, though, it had Jumped
from the Moon's farside L-point to the L-point near Jupiter (where the gravitational pull of the Sun and of Jupiter cancel each other out). Then, after Taylor & Landon & Dodge dock that 3-seater ANSA shuttle
in the shuttlebay of their ORION Mission ship, they take off the 3 spacesuits and don the ANSA uniforms we'll see them in at the beginning of PLANET, joining the rest of the crew of the Orion Mission.
Back to that "General" who helicoptered over to Zuma Beach to greet the astronauts who had just splashed down into the southeast corner of sector Alpha Charlie.
This is "one of two" nearly identical spaceships that had been deemed "missing"... but which one could it be? Is it Virdon's ship? Or Taylor's?
When they get the hatch open, the General is able to see that whoever is inside it, they were wearing full-body spacesuits
. And, as we saw in the TV show's pilot episode, Virdon & Burke & Jones were not
wearing such spacesuits. They were wearing the ANSA uniforms. The TV credit sequence shows the entire cockpit, and there's no trace of such bulky spacesuits (with helmets, etc) visible... nor is there any
room for them. Virdon & crew went into Outer Space without the aid of such EVA suits, not having an airlock to go through, obviously.
When the General sees spacesuited "astro"-nauts emerging from the beached spacecraft, he assumes that these three must be Taylor and his crew. Taylor and his two-man
crew (probably Dodge and Landon). Taylor's 3-seater must've lifted off without Stewart
. Otherwise, it would've been a 4-seater ship on Zuma Beach. Notice that the General does not say, "Welcome, ladies and gentlemen
, to the United States..." He assumes that the crew was made up exclusively of male astronauts, saying, "Welcome, gentlemen, to the United St--!"
In my scenario, the ORION Mission command ship [the "mothership"] had a total crew complement of around 12 or 13. Taylor's ship (i.e. the ESCAPE ship) brought the total up to that number. Brent and
'his' so-called "Skipper" were two of the other ten or so astronauts. Stewart was one of several women astronauts along for the duration of that colonizing mission. When it came time for Taylor's
crew to go into hibernation, they were to sleep the "long sleep" in the 4 sleep-chambers in one of the other two ANSA shuttles... the 4-seater shuttles. There were no hibernation chambers in the 3-seater
shuttle that Taylor and the other 2 men (Dodge and Landon) had flown from Cape Kennedy to the Rendezvous. The overall plan called for every crewmember to spend 12 of the 18 months of SHIP-TIME in hibernation. In case of
catastrophe (i.e. the nuclear power plant going critical, something like that), the Mothership would drop out of warp... the 2 primary ANSA shuttles would detach and, using thrusters, move away from the Mothership and
then Jump (or Warp) to whatever destination was viable. Some of the Orion Mission crew would hibernate in chambers located in the Mothership. Taylor, Dodge, Landon, and one of the females
(Stewart) would hibernate in that 4-seater shuttle so that--just in case of a catastrophe--if
they had to automatically detach from the Mothership and warp to their destination, at the very least they would have a breeding pool to colonize the planet they were heading to.
That was the plan, anyway.
Needless to say, the true nature of the Mission wouldn't be made public knowledge. The public had already been given a fake cover-story ("disintegrated in orbit")... and the President elected the year
after their Launch had been told a different lie: that the ship had gone "missing". But Hasslein probably knew the true nature of the Orion Mission: to colonize an Earthlike planet orbiting a Sunlike star
located 320 lightyears away from Earth in the constellation Orion. By late 1971 (at the latest) they had the technology to pull it off, but they needed to fool the world -- especially the Soviets and the Chinese -- that
these spaceflights were mere rocket-journeys around the Moon. Unsuccessful journeys, at that. Hasslein (and the President who preceded the one played by William Windom) had to have been part of a "conspiracy"
(if you will) to establish America as a spacefaring nation... keeping its Near-Lightspeed warp technology secret from everybody -- especially from NASA
. They would use the NASA facility at Cape Kennedy to launch two of their spaceships (which they would pretend are mere rocket-type vehicles), using other strictly military sites to do "missile tests"
which are actually the launches of other ANSA vehicles.
The trick is to get them up into space... and
out of eyesight of not only ground-based telescopes, but also away from the prying eyes of foreign surveillance satellites. Some supposedly "unmanned" military missiles (carrying "satellites"
for the Defense Department) would "unfortunately" explode up in the Low-Earth-Orbit position it had barely reached... not!
Actually, the "payload" (an ANSA shuttle and/or cargo missile) would make a Jump into hyperspace to its Rendezvous position at the Sol-Jupiter L-point. It would just vanish with a burst of gamma rays in
its wake. The Soviets (et al.) would smile and shake their heads at the bad luck of those poor Americans, trying to get their spy satellites up. And, publicly, the U.S. military would feign disappointment... whilst the
ANSA program secretly smiled at these successes.
The eventual plan would include the U.S.A. informing the world that it had developed the technology to go to the Stars... and that colonizing missions were already underway
. They would inform the People that guys like Landon are not dead... they're still alive
, with their own Self-Time slowed down, aging at a rate of 3.6615 EARTH-YEARS every SHIP-TIME day. They would reach their destination in the late 40th Century, having aged only 18 months. And, those on Earth who
would finally be told about their heroic mission would make a life-sized bronze statue for each of them... for, never let it be said that we forget our heroes...
But in November of 1973, when everybody outside the "need-to-know" of ANSA falsely
believed that Taylor, Dodge, and Landon had been in space for almost 2 years... and would undoubtedly have died from starvation... the ship returns and lands off the coast of California. Three men in spacesuits
launched from Cape Kennedy... and now three spacesuited "people" have just emerged from the capsule. At first, the General had asked, "Is anybody in that thing?" and had been told, "I don't
know; we just beached it." When he gave the order to "open it up" he probably expected the frogmen to see the corpses
of Taylor, Landon, and Dodge inside. Probably dead from taking cyanide capsules in case their mission went sour.
But the three astronauts emerged alive! The General, assuming that it's the same three male astronauts who had launched that ship in January of 1972, says: "Welcome, gentlemen, to the United St--!"
Gentlemen. That word excludes
the possibility of there being a female astronaut (be she from NASA or ANSA). The General uses the word "gentlemen" because he knows that this ship carried only 3 astronauts in it, not 4. Colonel Taylor,
Lieutenant Dodge and Lieutenant Landon, all males. He probably doesn't even know
about Lieutenant Stewart, who probably got to the Sol-Jupiter L-point Rendezvous/Construction site in a different launch vehicle... perhaps a supposed military satellite payload that "exploded" above the
atmosphere (i.e. that made a Jump through hyperspace that only looked like an explosion to foreign spy satellites).
The biggest mystery, of course, is why the hell they redesigned the interior of the spacecraft (as shown in the production photos at Phil Broad's site), to give it only 3 seats. If they truly intended for us to
think that this is the same ship we saw in PLANET, why didn't they just re-use the interiors they built for the first film?
Well, I already know the answer to that. They wanted the "surprise" moment where the Astronauts take off their helmets (a surprise almost as shocking as when the Mutants take off their masksin BENEATH). But
in order for that shot to happen, these Astronauts had to be wearing full spacesuits with opaque helmets. And if they were to slavishly rebuild Taylor's spaceship, they would have to get those astronauts (in those
bulky spacesuits) out through the "escape tunnel" to the Hatch near the nosecone. And that would've been too unwieldy an operation. They had to "invent" a gull-wing cockpit hatch, for easier
egress.
Regardless of what they intended for us to think about this ship (i.e. that it somehow was the same one we saw in PLANET), the differences are just too glaring, and it affords guys like me the opportunity to take
these details at face-value and invent a plot that explains 'em!

.htmlLooking through some 'Dalek Chronicles' comic strips (Doctor Who spin-
off comic strips published in the mid 60's), I was reminded of the
fact that in 1994, more than 35 years after the last strip had
appeared, a new one was published in Doctor Who magazine. Although
writter David Whitaker had died in 1980, original artist Ron Turner
came back on board and blended seemlessly with the old strip.
Unfortunately, he too died after only one more adventure was
completed.
My question is: if Moench and Ploog are still very much with us, and
seem to be quite proud of their POTA work, aside from copyright
problems, is there any possiblity that they could work on, say, a
conclusion to Terror published in Srolls or AC or online? Just a
daydream, but it would be pretty awesome.
(O/T) I've just found a site that's made not-for-profit CGI versions
of most of those Dalek comic strips, it looks fantastic, I'm going to
go order them now.

.htmlI mentioned a while back that Graham had stumbled upon a Facebook group
dedicated to the old French LUG magazines which printed out the French
POTA mags in the seventies. I traded a few messages with one of the guys
there that knew quite a bit about the history of the magazine (and the
others around at the time), but I wasn't able to muster up much new
information for POTA specifically. As the covers are very distinct for
the french magazines conpared to the many other foreign editions, I did
find out that the artist's name was Jean Frisano. The Frisano is a
family of painters and while Jean himself has passed away (1989), his
son continues the tradition and has a commemerative area on his web site
for his father:
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/thomas.frisano2/Tableauxangl.htm
Other than the fact that POTA was combined with "Doc Savage" as of issue
#13, there is no rationale for some of the more bizzare covers. (That's
what I was really hoping to find out).
Most of you have already seen the covers that are all on hunters site,
but in case you have not, here is another site where you can see them:
http://www.comicsvf.com/fs/8718.php
Corresponding with the group it appears that the stories are all the
same as the US version but they ended at 19 in stead of 29, so they have
less content. While we could not determine if the translations were
verbatim (or as direct as possible), it appears that the French censor
were very strict at the time and were notorious for editing out stuff in
other magazines, so it's possible that the same was done to the POTA
editions. Unless I get my hands on some one day, I wont be able to check
myself.
I think that's all we'll get from the Facebook group unless some older
folks join someday who can provide more info.

Thanks for all the work you've put in Dario.
Great to find out the artist name.
The onlyFrench / Lug edition I have is a number three and I've never checked to see if there are changes to the strips...
I'll have to find it and have a look.
Once again Dario thanks for doing the digging.
Best,Graham.

Oh and here's a little interview with Tom Sutton conducted by The Comics Journal talking about his POTA work plus working with Mike Ploog .
The full page link, with more topics, is here :-
http://www.tcj.com/3_online/t_sutton.html"
Art Methods on Planet of the Apes
SUTTON:
There's an adhesive that you can remove easily. I would have a three- or four-mil mylar film that would go over the surface of this whole thing. Therefore you have no fucking light boxes to bother with, etc.
This particular mylar film, had an etched surface. It would take any kind of marker or ink, or whatever you wanted. It could even be scratchboard if you wanted it to be.
GROTH: You put the mylar over the black-and-white drawing?
SUTTON: Yeah.
GROTH: And you put the tones on the mylar?
SUTTON: Yes. That's right. Yes.
GROTH: And Marvel would shoot the work twice? They would shoot the mylar, and then they would shoot the line work and combine the two?
SUTTON:
No. I think their magical printing people shot the whole thing at one time. And what happens... That was five mils. That was a very thick mylar. What happens, of course, when they shot it, is that they got a double
line.
GROTH: I was going to say. Wouldn't that have blunted or muddied the black-and-white linework underneath it.
SUTTON:
There was nothing underneath it, but... Oh, finally when you're all done you peel this thing away, your pencil thing. And you put a flat sheet of white behind it. Cheap white cardboard or something. I hadn't
counted on that. It was just... And it wasn't their fault, either, because no matter how you moved those lights you were going to get a double line someplace. Now I know not to do that.
On Working with Mike Ploog
GROTH: One of the stories, the credits read, "Art: Mike Ploog and Tom Sutton." How did that come about?
SUTTON:
Mike Ploog. Funny guy. Never met the man. I had to call him. I used to call him at this laundry. You'd hear machines going and chains jingling and screaming old ladies and shit like that.
GROTH: I'm not sure if I understand. You called him at a laundromat?
SUTTON: It was a pay phone.
GROTH: A pay phone?
SUTTON: He didn't have a phone.
GROTH: That's a little odd, isn't it?
SUTTON: Somebody would yell for him and presently he'd come downstairs and we would have our little conversation.
GROTH: He lived over a laundromat?
SUTTON: Yeah.
GROTH: [Amused] How peculiar. Did he pencil and you ink, or how did that break down?
SUTTON:
Oh, I don't know, Gary. Something happened. Ploog has two ways of working - or did have two ways of working. He could work and he'd come up with a kind of Will Eisner thing. He would be quite careful about
how he did this. He was a good brush man. I am not. He had another way, which was a lot looser and I've got to get this thing in by Tuesday. I think he's in L.A., too. Why aren't you in L.A.?
GROTH: I was.
SUTTON: Oh, that's right. Your house fell down the hill.
GROTH: I escaped.
SUTTON:
Anyway, I think he'd drawn most of the whole thing roughly, drawn some of it tightly, and inked about three pages and didn't want to do it any more. Or what the equivalent is: got a better deal. I said,
Yeah, that's fine. Send it up. I had a lot of fun with it. I enjoyed it. It was not the way I would draw anything at all, but it was... It's always a kick for me to see how another man goes about the same task.
Otherwise, how the hell would I ever learn anything. I think he must have had a lot of animation background.
GROTH: Yeah. I think he did.
The journal did a large interview with Sutton in issue 230 (I think)
My copy disappeared a couple of years ago but it was a fascinating read...Sutton had an odd way with words and could ramble quite a bit. make connections with between things which
weren't necessarily apparent to other people.
Still... was never happier than when he was left alone to draw.
Best,Graham.

bizarre to think Ploog might not have had a phone if this was in the

-- This is a good
review of the 'movie' version:
TIME OF THE APES
Back in the 60's the Japanese bought a load
of Planet of the Apes materials and decided to make their own version of the
movie, with interesting results, finally it's here, it's a classic and a must
own, let me tell you why!
Johnny (Masaaki Kaji) and Caroline (Hiroko
Saito) are annoying Japanese schoolchildren straight out of GODZILLA flick
central casting. Johnny has that round, moon face that suggests too many
dumplings and a role as the teenager Sammo Hung in a made-for-TV bio-pic while
Caroline sports white knee-highs, pigtails, and a denim jumper over a Holly
Hobbie blouse, securing a place for her in the hearts and minds of freaky
Japanese schoolgirl fetish fans everywhere.
While visiting the hi-tech lab of Uncle Charlie,
the kids and chaperone Catherine (Reiko Tokunaga) take refuge from an earthquake
in capsules that shield them from the falling debris, not to mention the danger
of that big cardboard "computer" catching fire from the blinking lightbulbs
jammed into it.
The good news is they survive the earthquake. The
bad news is they wake up several thousand years into the future on... wait for
it... a planet ruled by apes! (You were expecting something else from a flick
called TIME OF THE APES?)
What follows is one of the most entertaining "so
bad it's great" gems I've seen in years. All the cliche POTA subplots can be
found in abundance... the area the apes are afraid to venture into; Pepe, the
helpful ape child (played Kazue Takita), who looks like a kid in an Ewok mask;
Godo, the obligatory "wildman" (Tetsuya Ushio) who might as well come from a
tribe called "The Beatniks" with his turtleneck sweater and wild beard;
in-fighting within the ape community; and, oh, so much more.
Unlike "official" APES entries, TIME OF THE APES
steers clear of any "messages" like racial harmony, technology gone awry or
man's inhumanity to man for most of its 98 minute running time. That changes
during a revealing encounter between our "naked ape" humans and Police Chief
Gebar (Baku Hatakeyama), which is pronounced "Gay Bar" throughout the flick.
Thanks to some name-clearing footage provided by a
buttinsky of a UFO and the good-natured wisdom of the sartorially resplendent
Commander (Wataru Omae), our heroes are given the opportunity to live a life
that basically translates to "separate but equal" status. Until, of course, an
encounter with a supercomputer that explains (sorta) how apes came to rule and
gives our intrepid time-travellers a chance to travel even further into the
future or live life on another planet. Some choices huh!
What the computer does not explain is: how the apes
came into possession of leftover uniforms from a civil war re-enactment society;
why the Commander wears a costume that can only be described as Dolemite Meets
Colonel Sanders; what the origin of the CB antenna, um, I mean "laser whip" is;
how - if it's a few thousand years in the future - the apes are driving a fine
selection of 1960s/70s muscle cars; or, if Uncle Charlie's smoking around the
"highly sensitive" computer equipment had anything to do with thrusting our
heroes into the future.
With all the junk that's clogging up the 600 cable
channels we get, I find it hard to believe somebody wasn't willing to air the 26
episodes that make up the entire Japanese TV series from which this flick was
edited together. I guarantee it would immediately become my favorite show on
television!
Neil
I downloaded this, but it's the only version of it I've seen - I'd
quite like to see the movie without the voiceovers.

Still, does 26 episodes mean it was twice as good/twice as successful
as the POTA TV series? They must have been doing something right...

Yeah, translations don't always hold up, and in this thing the makeup has
the same problem.
If you want two seasons of convoluted story, thin plot devices, and thick
makeup thought
this is the on for you. I can't get into the characters though.
They look too much like
monkeys. Would anyone have cared if they crucified Cha-Ka from the
Land Of The Lost
upside down and roasted him on a stick. Cha-ka Ogonza! Not
much. Knock yourself out!

hybrid appeared. Some is clearly Ploog, some is clearly Sutton and
it's kind of a brief merger of the two styles before Tom Sutton took
on Terror single handed. The art in #19 is a weird mixture of awful
and brilliant. The third chapter of Future History Chronicles was the
one with the reproduction problems--the original art is really
beautiful, with tight lines, whereas the published version is a bit
blurred.Wasn't Apes blessed to have artistic goliaths like Sutton and
Ploog? John, Scrolls.

I think I've said before ... but in the mid 70's, if you had no real interest in Super-heros, at least there was some venues for your work... not a lot but some,DC
mystery titles, Charlton, romance and of course Apes was one of these !!!
I've always maintained that (After the initial burst) POTA wasn't a real priority for Marvel... (Marvel UK is an other matter !!)
So the artist were left pretty much to their own devices (How many editors did the title have in a short spell of time ?)
Ideal situation for peaple like Ploog and Sutton.

(Not a series well known in the UK)

inpector Luger and Ursus in beneath. The voice was so distinct and yet
with the mask/appliance, the visual recognition factor just was not
there. It was only in the late eighties when reading the Beneath
credits that I finally realized who that was.
Now I can't watch Barney Miller and see Luger without thinking of him
as that Gorilla.
Great show.

.htmlDefinitely not Off Topic.
I didn't even mention Gregory Sierra, the other Beneath/Miller tie-in.
(I didn't mention him because I knew who he was).
Gregory Sierra also has a somewhat more obscure POTA tie-in in that he
was a semi-regular on "Sanford and Son". In north america, "Sanford
and Son" played opposite the POTA TV show. The popularity of "Sanford
and Son" and "Chico and the Man" are often quoted as reasons for the
demise of the POTA show. To put it in perspective, here in Canada both
Sanford and Chico were picked up by the 2 Canadian TV networks at the
time, but POTA was not. You only got POTA if you had cable. That's why
I only got to see the POTA TV show many years later and not during
it's short prime time life.
Seeing as the POTA TV show was so much more popular in the UK (and yes
I know there were other reasons for that), does anyone know what UK
shows were playing opposite POTA at the time. Anything good? I doubt
it.

That's a good point Dario... I'm not sure !!!
I always think that the fact the movies hadn't been shown on UK TV, at the time, went some ways to fueling the mass fad for POTA in the UK ... it was big !!! the TV series was the first thing we saw.

'Fraid not.
I can remember pacing up and down waiting for 'Stars on Sunday' (with
Jess Yates!) to finish but that's about all. I imagine 'APES' would
have been up against something like 'The Onedin Line' or 'The
Brothers' on BBC1. BBC2, back then, was a desolate wasteland so I
doubt they'd have been any competition there. In the mid 70's that
would have been it for British TV - just the three channels.

When I was in year 6 (in years old/1977) a
friend of mine went to New
Zealand . He returned with a tale of a
PLANET OF THE APES brand “Ice Block” (translate ICY POLE or
POPSICLE, depending on where you were born). He said he had a wrapper and
a sticker for me but he lost them! I wanted to believe him, but I really
found this curious because most of the “Ice Blocks” in
New Zealand were also available in
Australia .
So I put this down do a tall tale, but I have often asked New Zealanders about
it.
Until I saw these on eBay (when Brendan
sold them a few weeks back) there was never a confirmation on the POTA “Ice
Blocks”. I guess it could be because they are not REALLY POTA –
they are a knock off APEFRUITS. But it’s very clear that they ARE a
knock off – the faces on the stickers are straight off the day bill for
BATTLE .
WALL’S is known as STREET’S in
Australia .
I couldn’t resist and I won these on
eBay so you can modify that credit Hunter! Just kidding…

Thanks to everyone who shared, it's much appreciated and of course to Hunter for hosting.
By the way Hunter seeing the posters from Steve Clark made me dig out this old easel back poster (Approx A4) which I got from the local cinema.
http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w252/hill19652000/Easelbackposter.jpg
It's not very interesting but gives an idea how the film was shown at a local level.
If you want it for your site Hunter just let me know and I'll send you a copy... if you don't no worries as I say not that interesting really if you take the local aspect away.
Best,Graham.

Just go off-topic, and I don't really want to scare you, but I think
you should know: MyBook drives often seem to have problems just after
the 1-year warranty expires. I had a 500GB MyBook that died 4 days
after the 1-year warranty expired. It wouldn't do anything but click
several times when it was turned on. I did a quick Google search and
found sites with posts from literally hundreds of people who had all
experienced that "click-of-death" with the MyBook drives (and most
shortly after the warranty expired). Fortunately for me, I didn't
really lose too much data, as it was mostly used as a backup drive for
my other drives.
Hopefully you won't have any problems, but you should make sure
everything you store there is stored elsewhere, too, just in case. I
will never buy a Western Digital drive again, though.
I replaced mine with a 750 Maxtor OneTouch 4, which comes with a
5-year warranty. The warranty durations alone speak volumes about the
expected lifespans.....

.htmlOh look close & there's some dust alright.(and being obsessive
Compulsive dosen't hurt either) Muhahahahaha!! Pics 2 & 11 are both
animation cells from the Return Cartoon that I acquired when I went
to Comic Con in San Diego last year. I have a good number of lobby
cards, autographed photos etc. but I didn't want to take up too much
space from the group & the animation cells are something I never see
in most of the collection pics I've gawked at.

I compress my LP transfers using FLAC, which is a lossless
compression---it'll save you some space, and when you decompress them,
you end up with the original file. Then I burn the FLACs as data DVDs
for storage.
Maybe you'll get lucky and your MyBook will last---but you should be
prepared to lose it, just in case....

this curious because most of the "Ice Blocks" in New Zealand were also available in Australia. So I put this down do a tall tale, but I have often asked New Zealanders about it.
Until I saw these on eBay (when Brendan sold them a few weeks back) there was never a confirmation on the POTA "Ice
Blocks". I guess it could be because they are not REALLY POTA – they are a knock off APEFRUITS. But it's very clear that they ARE a knock off – the faces on the stickers are straight off the day bill
for BATTLE.
WALL'S is known as STREET'S in Australia.
I couldn't resist and I won these on eBay so you can modify that credit Hunter! Just kidding…

Wow, someone
covered up where I had PotaDG on the board (which I had blanked out in order to
be able to put the letters there) that Burke & Urko are looking at but they
didn't think to cover up my name on the bottom right hand side of the picture on
the wall!
Nice bit of
recycling.

That’s nuthin’!
I’ve been putting moustaches on
chicks in the comics you have drawn, and modifying the text, and plugging these
to publishers as “gay interest” pieces (should see what Urko and
Burko get up to)!
Photoshop is a wonderful thing.
And I’m sure Oscar Wilde has
something to say too…..”The only thing worse than being Whitty…..”……I
mean “The only thing worse than getting your work butchered, is NOT having
your work butchered!”. “Very witty Wilde…very, VERY
witty!”.
