At the Bristol Comics Expo on Saturday I met Colin Taylor, who is self
publishing a comic by the above name. He's klooking for artists and
there's more info at www.comicspace.com/simia_comics/. It features a

Hi John.

Looks like a job for super-Neil!  Do you know if it’s a paying gig?

I’ll certainly do my bit by buying the comics when they are released.

John - it’s great to see you (and Dave) have returned to the DG – welcome back.

Do you have any news about when the next Simian Scrolls issue is coming and can you hint at what we might expect to see?

Michael

On the subject of Revolution, I was in Montreal last weekend where I
finally had the chance to meet Salgood Sam. I purchased one of his
Revolution POTA pages a while back, but rather than have him send it
to me, I asked him to hold onto it for a while until my next trip to
Montreal. A nice guy. We chatted a bit about that comic and a few
others. Foolishly on my part, I realized about a half hour into my
trip that I forgot to bring my Revolution comic copy for him to sign.
Dooh! I bought his latest GN ("Therefore, Repent!"), but he did not
have any spare copies of Revolution for me to buy and get signed. So
I'll have to meet up with him again some day.

There's a huge multi genre (SF/Comic/Horror/etc) show in Toronto every
year and this years batch of attendees include Salgood, Ty Templeton
and Kent Burles. I'm hoping to get down there in July and meet them
all. If I do make it I'll try to get a group picture and post it.

Welcome back Michael!

Dario

All things being equal - and in the whacky world of Fanzine publishing
they never, ever are - SS15 ought to be published around August.

We've learned not to promise what we can't deliver so we're reluctant
to announce any content prior to actual publication. At this stage all
we can safely say is that we're well aware it's the 40th anniversary
and we're hoping we can somehow do that justice.

Yup.  I lurk more than I post, but I still read the emails with interesting subject lines, and click through to the links when they look like fun.  I think I read most of the tributes to Chuck Heston when he passed (the same week as my own stepfather passed away, so I was in a morbid mood to begin with).  And Yup, I shall be attending this Toronto convention, as I do every year, and will happily pose with Max (Salgood Sam) and Kent Burles and Steve Molnar and Sam Agro and Attila and Joe O'Brien, and whomever is there from the POTA gang.  The creative teams were all from Toronto and Montreal, and We usually get everybody together in T.O. once a year.  This year, we'll be putting out Mr. Comics HOVERBOY comic (FINALLY!!!!), which was created by the many of the same hands.

And please don't ask me when the graphic novel is coming out, as I think I've mentioned a few times, I have next to no contact with Steve Ballentyne, our original publisher, and I've no more information on that subject than anyone on this group does.  I haven't done anything for Mr. Comics in well over a year (the Hoverboy material was all created in 2006-2007, and is only just now coming out!).

have any spare copies of Revolution for me to buy and get signed. So
I'll have to meet up with him again some day.

Dario

Guess its that "once its posted on the web its free game" mentality.
I'm sure nobody noticed your name still in the corner. (I hadn't)
That's brillant. What can you do?

Do you have a scan of it at all Dario ?

It's always great to see the original art and compare it to the printed page.

Best,Graham.

Not at the moment. Max (Salgood) scanned a bunch of pages he was willing
to sell and uploaded them on Flickr (the photo site) and I picked one
that way. But my ISP's mail server crashed 2 days ago and they're still
recovering all lost emails, and it's in one of those emails that I have
the URL. I tried to find the stuff on Flickr myself, but I've had no
luck. I'll post the link as soon as I get it back.

For what it's worth, I bought the page with the 'brick throwing' scene.
It was tough to choose one.

Don't worry. You've been very upfront about the status of the GN. I'd
still like to see it come to fruition one day but if it doesn't, well
the way I see it, at least we got the original series to be thankful for.

I'm doing my best to make it down and do hope to see you and all the
others there. I'd be easily identifiable as I'd be the guy wearing the
POTA T-shirt. (I wish I could say that doing so would not, in itself, be
enough as there may be others doing the same. But alas, we are a dying
breed and I just know that I'd be the only one sporting such a shirt.)

My condolences on the loss of your stepfather.

When I met Tom Fowler at Comic Con. he didn't have any pages to sell
but he did show me a huge stack of his pages from Revolution on the
Planet of the Apes that hadn't been messed with. No lettering, no
color. Just the pencils as he turned into Mr. Comics. I was in awe.

    That's an impressive collection.

The question of the day is . . .
    When collections are sold,
    for whatever reason,
    Should they be sold whole?
    Or
Should they be broken up so
others have a chance at some
    of the more rare items?

I was watching the revamped Star Treks
and I noticed that in the credits the name
for the character played by our old friend,
Janos Prohaska, the guy that made the
primitive apes look so . . . primitive?
was spelled wrong. It was titled as
The Gumauto, instead of The Mugato.
I'm sure ever Trekkie knew that,
but I'd never caught it before.

Personally, I think they should be broken up
for a couple of different reasons. Redistribution
being one of them. And not only does it bring
more for the seller to sell items individually,
but it allows others, besides Brian, Terry &
Billy a chance to get their hands on them.

Depends what you are tyrying to achieve and who wants them.

Usually an entire collection gets less so the seller is advised to sell bits at a time.

Well, unless the seller had a huge bill to pay then anything can happen.

I would like to say I would sell it individually....but if the right buyer and the right price cam along...

Nice collection Tim. I've got what I consider a 'nice' collection, but
nothing like yours (and the collections of a few other people here).
Thanks a lot for taking the time to take pics and put them up for all to
see. I can also see that you've done a great job of keeping everything
nice and sorted, bagged and even encased.

Next time include yourself in one of the pictures as you should be proud
to be the owner of all that.

    Dario

Yes, a picture of yourself & possibly your address & maybe a sleeping
or even vacation schedule would be a great touch to these pics. ;)

    Yes I agree!

    And to Geaham's question...

YES! Neil and I are doing a collectibles website.

HOWEVER....it's one of those annoying bloody things that gets put on hold all the time.

So vote - website or new comics?

Well I live in North Carolina but my collection is in a small house in the mountains of Denmark guarded by a pack of DObermans and a giant green ogre.

Well I'm having a good look at the photos now Tim... and well I'm dismayed ...once again no dust !!!

It's bad enough that I fight a losing battle with dust in the shop ...but well I have have to keep dusting there... now I'll have to start at home just to keep up with every one.

Like how you've got your Kubricks displayed mine are less organised and I'm at the stage where I'll have to find the boxes just to remember which character came with which set !! (Oh... and they keep falling over and are covered in dust)

One question though, what is the picture /  item just to the right of Neil's "beware The Beast" print ?

It looks unusual  and I can't recall seeing it before .

    Best, Graham.

That is a repro of the Romanian Planet poster...! The red one next to that is from an on site showing at Lake Powell....then the next one is a real Romanian Escape poster....

and believe me there is dust!! not too much in that room cause I keep the door closed....but the "tumbleweeds" in the rest of my place keep rollling! I HATE to vacuum......

and what is the deal with these new bagless vacuums! YOu have to empty them which only makes the dust go everywhere.....who the f** thought this was a good idea???

      Hi, everyone,

I havne't posted in a long time, so I thought I'd pop in again and
      say howdy.

      Howdy.

As we're approaching the 40th anniversary of Planet of the Apes--with
rather a whimper than a bang, compared to how other franchises
officially celebrate their anniversaries--it has me wondering...

Is POTA relevant anymore? Has it become just a footnote in the post-
Burton era--and is there new life that could be breathed into it? So
many attempts to relaunch or continue the saga--the TV series, the
cartoons, the new movie, the various comic book spinoffs--ultimately
never caught on, wheras Stargate, Star Wars, BSG, Buffy, Star Trek,
James Bond and so many other franchises see to succeed in keeping
afloat, no matter how far they drop in quality (cough, cough, Star
      Trek: Voyager).

Why isn't POTA--arguably one of the most important films of the '60s--
undergoing the same rejuvenation that Bond, Trek, Galactica and Star
Wars are currently enjoying? Is Planet of the Apes past its prime,
and are we all just flogging a dead horse? Why hasn't apemania
      caught on among the masses?

      I'm curious what everyone thinks.

Hi, Mike. I've been radio-silent for a while as I focused on other
pursuits, but I thought it was time to re-up. Thanks for asking
about the timeline. I've been working with Ed Gross (Joe Russo's co-
author on the POTA Revisited book, as well as the author of a ton of
sci-fi- and film/tv-related books in the '80s and '90s) to develop my
former website, The Hasslein Curve, as a print book--the first title
being released by a new publishing company he's forming, called
Timeline Books. Other projects are in the works as well, though it's
probably too soon to talk about them yet.

Part of the reason I went into radio-silence mode was that I had
sequestered myself so I could completely rewrite the thing--as a
website, it suited my purposes, but as a printed book, it was too
unwieldly and wordy. It also had a number of errors of logic and
ommission--mainly because after compiling the thing in the first
place, I was too overloaded on POTA to go back and edit it before
posting the site--which I've now had the opportunity to tweak. I
also added a lot of new information, including details of numerous
unpublished stories from Marvel, Adventure, Mr. Comics and other
publishers, thanks to input from the various creators on those series.

I hear it's coming out in the fall. Originally, Ed had hoped to
release it this summer, but that got pushed back a bit due to delays
in getting the company formed. I've been told it'll definitely be
out by the end of the year, though, to help celebrate the 40th
anniversary. There's a cover image posted on my site, which I think
looks great; it's from an Argentine artist Ed has worked with before.
I'm stoked about this and look forward to seeing it published.
Although I've been writing professionally since the early '90s, all
previous attempts to publish a book have unfortunately fizzled.

      I know the timeline book won't be to everyone's liking--now THERE'S
lousy marketing!--as I realize not everyone agrees with the all-
inclusive approach. I can absolutely respect that view. Still, it's
not that I think it's possible to make it all fit seamlessly--'cause,
hey, it's not--but rather that I find it fascinating from an academic
standpoint to examine the mythos using the "Robin Hood defense."

I've done a lot of work for Lucasfilm over the years--a new short
story about Lando Calrissian and Lobot was published today on
starwars.com, in fact--and one of the snafus those of us creating new
material for the Star Wars universe often run into is how to deal
with contradictory accounts. Do we discard divergent stories? Do we
dismiss certain titles because the fit isn't ideal? Nope--the way
many of us deal with it is to follow the example of Robin Hood.

The various tales of Robin Hood don't entirely jibe from a
consistency standpoint, so to avoid having to discard what is
otherwise well-written and entertaining lore, some scholars take the
stance that the problem isn't the continuity errors--it's the bias or
inaccuracy of the storyteller. In other words, if you see continuity
errors, then the person telling the story simply got some of the
details wrong. Multiple storytellers means multuple viewpoints and
perspectives. Thus, for Robin Hood and Star Wars, if something
doesn't fit--chalk it up to the fact that the person telling the
story in-universe is simply mistaken in their recollection, then feel
free to mine whatever you need to from those divergent tales for your
own lore. There are some pretty crappy Star Wars titles out there,
but I've stll used details from them when writing new reference
materials, because even the weaker titles have their positive
elements, and there's no reason to throw out the good with the bad.

I've tried to take this same stance for the timeline book--when
things don't quite jibe, I noted the discrepencies but kept the
details intact, acknowledging that some things simply don't fit
despite my efforts to wedge them in. Basically, my goal was to
say, "If it was said to happen in this timeframe, then that's where
it happened...in some form, in some reality." Once you bring time
travel into a story, contradictions can always be explained away by
alterations in the timestream--nd with multiple timetrips, like we
have in POTA, that effect is compounded. So it doesn't all fit...but
that's okay. At least, that's what I hope those who pick up the book
      will come away thinking. :)

Okay, now I'm rambling, so I'll wrap this up. But my kids are in bed
and my wife passed out on the couch watching the news, so I had a
good chunk of time to respond.

      Sorry you asked? :)

Anyway, it's nice to be back in the fold.

      Rich

      Hi, John,

I think that's one of the delays in getting the book out this
summer--Ed's still trying to decide how to handle
illustrations. Unfortunately, since the book is of the unauthorized
variety, using photos in it enters the copyright infringement arena.

*** And that is why you go the route of some of the fan websights and place a disclaimer in there saying something like: "PLANET OF THE APES is property of 20th Century Fox. This book is for entertainment only. No rights are given or implied.

I don't know if you could get by with that, but maybe you could... And/or since you are in collaboration with Ed, maybe he could get you access to Joe Russo's collection of rare stills, many of which I'm sure are actually NOT copyrighted by FOX. Yeah, they are APES pictures, but since they're not specifically owned by FOX, maybe you could get around it that way... ****

Hi Rich, I like your way of thinking on this subject. It's occured to
me that science fiction fans, more than anyone else, are obsessed
with the minute details, to the detriment of the actual story. For
centuries here in Ireland the ancient legends were passed down the
generations orally, with each storyteller adding their own
embellishments. So the same basic story could have very different
      variations from place to place.

Anyway, I wanted to say that I really enjoyed your site and I think
it's great it's stepping over into the paper format, I look forward
      to getting a copy.

If you can send an e-mail to Ms. Ada Chan, one of the best sculptors of 1:6 scale heads, she will tally the e-mails she receives and sculpt for free one celebrity (foregoing her $230 sculpting fee).  I was hoping that I could have enough people send her a request to sculpt James Naughton as Burke from the TV Series, Planet of the Apes.  I know it will be impossible to get enough people to request this celebrity, but I am hoping for the best.  If you can send her a request with this on the subject line:

Please sculpt James Naughton as Burke from the TV Series, Planet of the Apes.

Ms. Ada Chan resides in Hong Kong, and this is her e-mail address:

It seems to me that those shows you mention have a few things in
common. Good writing. A clear vision of what the series is about, what
it's trying to say and where it's going. A 'guiding light' who
actually cares and maintains quality control (someone like Joss
Wheedon, Zack Snyder, James Cameron - not necc for APES but you get
      what I mean).

APES 2001 had none of that, so take Fox out of the equation and
entrust it to someone with integrity who cares less about money and
more about what they're making. A tall order I know but that's what it
      needs.

Maybe someone will take POTA like they did with Hulk.  After the failure of Ang Lee's HULK, someone had the sense to listen to fans and made The Incredible Hulk.  They made this new Hulk movie more like the TV series that everyone wanted.  Maybe someone can make a new movie or mini series that is made for thr fans!?!

      *** Exactly...

I seen a commercial for it and it said something about The Hulk being 10 feet tall... Not sure if that was a scared comment by whoever seen him or if it's a real thing in the film... If it is the reality of the movie that he's a ten footer, then Lou Ferrigno has a lotta growing to do... ***

The fact that Peter Jackson is a fan leads me to believe that he would write a worthy script.

      Possibly Cameron too.

And if either of these guys has a crack at it they would make it interesting I think.

But Dave said it – needs to be a great writer who can give us a REAL twist….I still can’t believe anyone hyped the end to Burton ’s stinker!

I have hope, but I predict it will be at least another 10 years before anything new is attempted by Fox.

Oh but that was a remake - and a totally unnecessary one at that.

I am saying if he or Cameron do an original POTA script, I think it would be good. Surely better than Burton's but that's not saying very much is it?

Of course you're entitled to your opinion(s), but as I asked in my previous post, do you at least think that the 2005 Kong is better than the 1976 one? (Now THAT one was unnecessary... Even more unnecessary was it's sequel King Kong Lives!) Anyway, let me know how you guys think that the 2005 one rates next to the '76 one...

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned the 2005 one is on par with the original one, if not better than it. It's one of the only films I've see with CGI where it's pretty believable and it's not so obvious (think Jar-Jar Binks)... Yeah, the opening bit is longer than it needed to be, but then again, aren't all of Jackson's films really long anyway? Once they get to Skull Island, it was worth the wait anyhow...

If I were to change one thing in King Kong (2005), it would be the casting of Jack Black... There aren't enough words to describe how out of place he was in that film... His work sucks anyway, but in a dramatic/action film like Kong, he is waaay out of place... I've yet to see Jack Black be good in anything, he just irritates the hell out of me... I wonder who he had to bl*w to get a role in that film.

To me, King Kong is the better made film, and probably even the better film, but as someone on this board said before, the 1933 one will always be the classic one.

Yup. But even so - jeez he played a good part.

Like Tom Crise, he has done so many movies there HAS to be SOME good acting involved.

I watched that documentary and enjoyed it. A lot of it theories
presented as facts, of course, but they had some pretty good CGI's of
things like the Golden Gate bridge decaying, and London being flooded
(after the Thames Barrier). They didn't mention the statue of
Liberty, but presumably if it's metal it would have disappeared
within the first couple of centuries without maintenance, though
Mount Rushmore would probably be one of the only things to last.

A few points they made might be of interest: 1, nature would reclaim
the cities surprisingly quickly, within about 50 years the streets
would already be green, 2, even in radiated areas - they visited the
site of Chernobyl where all plant and animal life was wiped out 20
years ago, but now the wildlife is thriving, and healthy, in a
natural forest, 3, while the ancient Egyptians/Romans/Greeks recorded
their civilisations in stone, all our records are on printed
paper/cd's, which won't last more than a century or so. So the
ancient artifacts will far outlive anything produced today.

He's not even in that movie.

You must be thinking of Phillip Seymour Hoffman
The guy that played Capote.  If Black was in it he
must have had a walk-on. Did he change his name?

I've just finished adding a ton of new images to my PotA site.

      * More awesome scans from Mark Talbot Butler! Updates to the
Apes Advertisements (TV Guide ads), more stills from all the movies,
and a ton of Lobby Cards for all five movies from the UK. Thanks to
      Mark and Dave!

      * Dean Preston contributed autographs from Sal Mineo, John
Chambers, and Don Taylor. They can be found on the Ape-ographs page.

      Great stuff!

Dave, your scanning finger must be exhausted!

Are there any significant autographs missing now?

Subject: APES CHRONICLES (POTA 40th Anniversary issues)
      .html
.html WIth all the talk lately of the probable release of all 5 films on Blu-ray (and more than likely standard DVD as well), plus the additional upcoming things like the EMCE Toys repros of the Soldier Ape and Cornelius, the possibility of new comics from Neil and Whitty, plus Rob's APES timeline book... I got to thinking that this year is turning out ok for APES items...

We have all of the above, plus we just received a new SIMIAN SCROLLS not too long ago, with another one coming later this summer/early fall... All this is leading up to is a question regarding one of the most (if not the most) hyped 40th Anniversary tie-ins, the five issues of APE CHRONICLES...

From what I understood, all five issues were set to go, so I'm wondering who (if anyone) has received their issues yet? If so, what is the content like? Is it all 40th Anniversary related features/articles, or is there more to them?

I know there were a few people on here who ordered them, and I'd really appreciate hearing their feedback... I know Mr. Foster was supposed to receive a set, and if I remember right PotAfan (sp?) was gonna get them too.. So anyone who received them, let's have a review...  Let your reviews of the 40th Anniversary issues of AC be the start of your reviews for all the new APES items we can look forward to this year...
