I have not received anything yet but I think Terry was going to send me at least the copy for which I gave an interview.

I must say (sorry Terry!) I was less than impressed to see 5 issues released at the same time at around $10 each! Terry would be the only person in the world making money off POTA! :)

I don't like to knock things POTA, but when people are asking for money - it had better be worth it.

I know when I have asked for money it has BARELY covered postage, and Neil will confirm that I do actually "pay" him (sometimes with spaghetti matriciana!) so I am WELL out of pocket.

I can see from the covers and pages of Scrolls that the lads wouldn't be making a profit there either (John, Dave - please let me know here).

It's also kinda weird, after all the shit I took over my decision to use "OFFICIAL International POTAFC" title, including being banned from one of the Yahoo! POTA groups, that nobody seems to have reacted to Terry using the "OFFICIAL..." banner on his site.

But I must say it's nice to see some old faces back here and that some people can set aside differences and get on. Contrary to what you would think if you believed the member numbers of some groups, there's about 100 POTA fans in the world....it's a shame to split these into SUB groups!

The images were already scanned, I'm just the distributor. All credit

In purely financial terms, not one single issue of Scrolls has ever
made a profit.

In terms of the friends we've made, the images we've found and the
stories we've heard, the Fanzine has surpassed our wildest dreams.

*** From what I always understood it to be, SIMIAN SCROLLS recouped the money that it cost to have it printed up etc. and that was it, not a cent was kept as all proceeds went to charity? If I'm incorrect, by all means correct me. I do know that you guys do NOT profit from it and at least you all have the decency to wait until the issue(s) are actually printed and ready to be mailed to Kass (for distribution) here in the States before you collect any money... For that alone, you deserve some applause. I always believe in actually having the product (or in your case publication) ready for immediate shipment before any money is exchanged. To act like you have it ready to go and then leading people on with "It's coming soon" or whatever is just plain unethical to say the least, especially if it's being touted as "Available now". ***

*** That I can believe... I will still stand by what I've said many times before: SIMIAN SCROLLS is the best APES publication around... The only other one that would match (or maybe beat) it is that one that was only around for like two issues before the guys had a falling out.. It might have been called APES FAN? I don't remember the name, but hopefully someone can name it... The last issue had the Roddy McDowall tribute in it... ***

*** I find that pretty funny myself... The only reason some folks got all pissy at you was because they thought they thought they were entitled to "keep" the "Officail International" title even though at the time you were going to use it, AC was as well defunct... I know that it had not had a new issue in years when you wanted to use that "Official International" bit in your title... To me anyway, to really be the "Official" fanclub or whatever, you really should have the actual permission (and/or) blessing from FOX or whoever owns the copyright to the name of your fan club... In other words, to be the "Official International" fan club for APES, you really should have the permission from FOX... The same way if you were to do it for STAR WARS, you should have the permission from Lucasfilm Ltd. and so on... ***

I guess that that's the same deal with FOX... They won't license out the APES name "just in case" they can profit from it once more... They'd rather see it set stagnant rather than let it be farmed out to someone (or a corporation or TV network or whatever) that might actually DO something with the title... So, I guess FOX and that " Official International" fan club have something in common other than APES... $$$ ***

You stand corrected :0)

Financially, Scrolls is a loss-making exercise. A small profit is
sometimes made from European sales which goes toward paying for the
cost of shipping issues overseas. I said in an earlier message that
Mark Talbot Butler was amazingly generous, John Roche is a pretty
amazing guy too - For everyone who enjoys Scrolls, we're lucky he's a
fan - one who's made it his mission statement to share whatever he can.

I think that 'all proceeds to charity' idea may possibly have come
from sales of the CD 'Values'?

SCROLLS is the best APES publication around... The only other one that
would match (or maybe beat) it is - APES FAN?

Thanks for the compliment and yes, when I 'signed up' APESFAN issue 2
was always my personal template for what I wanted Scrolls to be.

If anyone has not received their issues and feels they are still owed some please contact me directly at hoknes@... so we can make sure we have your address on file correctly.

Yes the Canadian Post is pretty pokey at times
Yes all 5 issues were printed and finished in February

There are some people who have already received their copies
including John of Simian Scrolls
who did post his comments a while back on here

I did send Neil his copies quite a while back
but surface mail to Australia does take about 8 weeks
so hopefully he gets his soon

I just used a generic price tag of $9.99 on the issues
but for anyone who has ordered all 5 I definitely gave them a price break.

And in terms of me making money off POTA
Everyone long term on here knows that I have LOST thousands trying to promote POTA over the years

I do not make any money on AC and that is why the printing schedule has been so sporadic over the past number of years.   When I have free time to work and promote these properly I do.  I relied on others to help promote these issues before the internet came along and it was much harder to do back then then it is now with email etc.

I am glad Simian Scrolls is still going - they do such a great job and I"m always glad to see any POTA fans doing their best to keep the ape spirit alive

Some people were pissy because I deceived them  I didn’t lie – by the way!  I did ask LOTS of people at Fox for permission to have an INTERNATIONAL FC.  However, they kept STONEWALLING!

Finally someone (Debbie Olsham I think?) said “Just go ahead and use it – nobody will say anything!  We don’t DO fan clubs.  We do WEB SITES if something is popular and POTA is NOT!”

So effectively someone at Fox DID give me permission (but yeah I’m a very naughty boy coz I knew it was the WRONG person – and that the RIGHT person does not seem to exist).

So yeah spank me I have been a very naughty boy!

I enjoyed my latest issues of Chronicles a lot and there was material
in there that was totally unknown to me, such as the Australian
comics. Simian Scrolls never, ever breaks even financially, nor comes
near, but to get into a fanzine with any thought of making money is
not a good idea.Plus, I'm a lot more comfortable simply not making
money out of it.The money side is more than compensated for by the
amazing journey through Apedom that Scrolls has given me,Dave,Dean,
Alan & co over the years. The time we paid over to a charity was our
US proceeds and the Values proceeds when we sent the sum to the
Firemen's Orphans in New York after 9/11.I'd be very happy to see a
united Apedom pooling and maximising its' resources and for uus all
to be one happy bag of monkeys! John, Scrolls.

A lot of people have been bashing Canada Post of late and I just wanted
to put in my 2 cents worth as a Canadian who's used it more than others.
I've bought a lot of things off Ebay in the last few years from US and
Canadian sellers alike and I've never had even one problem. I always
look at the postmark on items received and I'm often surprised at how
fast items arrive from the time they are sent, regardless of state or
province of origin. The average time probably comes close to 7 days, but
many items arrive within 4 days even when it comes all the way from the
west coast to here in the east.

All this to say that I don't think that the problem is with Canada post
at all, but more likely crossing the border and entering the US or other
countries. I know that entering our country is quick. So it has to be
the cross country processing on the 'other' side.

I'm sure that there are some exceptions and that there is some
fluctuations based on volume and time of year, etc. But all in all, our
system work pretty fast. I don't normally stand up for government
services, but the few times the do work I hate to see them being bashed.

Will you ever be returning the timeline to the web – either as it originally appeared or the new version?

I must say, of the 20 or so POTA fans I have discussed timelines with, I have found 20 completely different versions!

It’s a brave task Rich and I hope you won’t take it personally if some people don’t 100% agree with you and pop up to say why.

Curiously enough – the two POTA fans with the most opposing views on timelines would be myself and Neil!  He’s wrong of course, but then he does get revenge by throwing in robots when he gets an opportunity!  J

        John,

I’m glad you read that article about the Aussie Newtons – it’s a beauty.  It originally appeared in a newspaper down here and the author is a DG member.  I uploaded it to the files about 4 years ago and not long after I also uploaded some pictures of a POTA themed “Haunted House” (where the only thing POTA in the HH was the comic book LOGO!) – apparently the Haunted House was Newton ’s idea too.

It would be nice to see a united Apedom, yes – look at what far less productive fans (yes – far more too, I know) have done for Firefly, Jericho , and ALMOST did for DEADWOOD!

        =========================================================

That "LIFE AFTER PEOPLE" documentary is one of 2 or 3 that have been produced and shown on cable/satellite channels... all of them stealing the idea put forth in the book "THE WORLD WITHOUT US" which I commented on some time back. Great book. And, even though they ripped off his book without so much as acknowledging it or its author, those documentaries are interesting and informative.

I'd just like to mention one thing, in reference to the bold-and-underlined text above. It should be acknowledged that there's a big difference between what happened at Chernobyl and what happened to New York City about 20 centuries before Taylor and his crew land in Dead Lake. The amount of radioactivity released due to the meltdown of a nuclear reactor is nothing compared to the unbridled devastation that would be caused by a Global Thermonuclear War -- especially since the NYC area would be a major target, subjected to multiple nuke strikes. With tens of thousands of nukes flying their parabolic trajectories from silo to target, you can bet that the Big Apple (along with the entire Eastern seaboard stretching from Boston to Miami) would be hit with a redundant number of nukes. Imagine NYC being hit again and again and again over the course of a few hours at most. Imagine all the nuclear power plants in the area going critical with nobody left to render them harmless. I can easily imagine the devastation being so great that, even 2000 years later, nothing would be able to grow in certain places, especially in 'zones' where rainfall is so minimal that the land is a desert.

Remember, the Sahara Desert (although not a nuked-out lifeless desert) is essentially barren of major lifeforms save those relative few that are able to adapt to the arid conditions. In Egypt, if it weren't for the Nile to provide its yearly inundation, there's no way that a kingdom could've been established there in antiquity.

I imagine that the Forbidden Zone is not only the victim of the Global Thermonuclear War from 2000 years earlier, but also happens to be a part of the Earth's land surface that just doesn't get much (if any) rainfall anymore. I suspect that a regular dose of rainfall would've brought even the nuked-out Forbidden Zone to new life. Dodge mentions that there's only a trace of nitrates in the soil... that all the nitrogen's locked into the nitrates. Taylor asks about "dangerous ionization" and Dodge replies in the negative. I think that if the Zone were to have been treated to regular downpourings of rain throughout the centuries, then at the very least the Zone would've attracted critters that are able to take advantage of whatever nutrients there are. And in addition to rainfall, there would undoubtedly be microscopic life blown in on the wind -- pollen, lichen, algae, bacteria, eukaryotic life, etc. Bit by bit, it would tend to greenify the desert... but not if there's no rainfall.

I think it's a combination of major nuke-radiation (from multiple redundant strikes) and a climatic shift resulting in essentially no rainfall. Deserts are deserts because they just don't get any precipitation. Irrigation can transform deserts into arable land... and that's exactly what would've happened if somebody other than the Lawgiver had been calling the shots. The Lawgiver declared the nuked-out desert a "Forbidden Zone" because he knew that there were remnants of the pre-simian human civilization to be found in its ruins. Otherwise, that land could easily be reclaimed for agricultural purposes, as Ursus knows. "... new, improved feeding grounds, and these grounds we can obtain in the once-Forbidden zone..."

Not that I think you're really being serious, Bill... but, hey, I'll take a whack at it!

In the TV show, we are presented -- firstly -- with the major "postal" system: Prefect Veska sends a gorilla trooper on horseback from the site of Virdon's crashed spaceship to Central City, with a written message for Chief Councillor Zaius.

One thing: in the script, Galen defines "Chalo" as a "small human settlement, about thirty hours south of here" [Scene 59, page 19]... whereas the actual filmed episode has Galen saying: "... about thirty miles south of here." The script says that Chalo is 30 "hours" south of Central City, but the spoken dialogue in the episode has it as 30 "miles" south.

        That's interesting.

Earlier, Veska told the gorilla [in the script, Scene 34, page 8]: "If you ride fast, you should reach Central City by tomorrow morning." In the episode, Veska says: "If you ride fast, you should be in Central City by tomorrow morning."

If this gorilla delivering Veska's message "rides fast"... for a distance of 30 miles or so... then why should he get there by "tomorrow morning" rather than only a couple of hours later? It is evident that Art Wallace's script meant for Chalo to be "thirty HOURS" south of Central City -- so that any horse-riding ape could travel that distance at a comfortable speed (say, a trot, rather than a gallop) in 30 hours' time, and a gorilla galloping that same distance would cover it in much less than 30 hours' time. When Roddy spoke the line of dialogue, he made a mistake ... saying "thirty MILES" instead of "thirty HOURS"... which doesn't make as much sense.

Unless we factor in some other information, turning Roddy's flub into an unflubbed factoid.

First off, we don't know exactly what time of day Virdon's ship crashlanded. Nor do we know exactly how much time it took for Arno to get from the crash site to Chalo... to rouse his dad with his amazing story... for Veska to roust up some gorilla troopers to accompany him & Arno... and for all 5 of them [Veska, Arno, and 3 gorillas] to ride from Chalo to the crash site. Nor do we know how long it took for Farrow to carry/drag Burke and Virdon from the ship to his "secret cave" which, luckily, is nearby. The pacing of the episode leads us to suspect that it didn't take much time at all, but realistically it would take up a fair amount of time.

Also, between the time when Veska (et al.) enters the open spacecraft cockpit and the time when Veska sends that gorilla rider off to Central City with his message to Zaius, we don't know how much time has passed in the interim. It could very well be hours later. It is when Veska sends off that gorilla to Central City that he also orders the other gorillas to make "a thorough search for the other two humans"... yet we know that at some point the gorillas trash the interior of the cockpit and bury the dead astronaut. Did the other two gorillas bury Jones and trash the cockpit first, and then begin their search for the other two humans?

I picture Veska taking some time to compose his letter to Zaius... perhaps while the gorillas are trashing the inside of the cockpit, after burying Jones.

Another thing: it is improbable that the ship crashed in the morning, since Arno is out and about playing with his dog, rather than attending school. I surmise that Arno had already been in school... that after school got out in mid-to-late afternoon, Arno took his pet (named "Dog"?) out for some fun, where they eventually ran into Farrow taking his late afternoon siesta out near his cave... that the ship crashed that late afternoon on March 21st of 3085... and that Veska (et al.) arrived at the crash site while the sun was still up but not too long before it would set. The sky would still be light for several hours yet, but Veska would be sending that gorilla off to Central City when there would only be a few hours (at most) of daylight left. Thus, the gorilla might have to spend the night halfway to Central City (just as Urko's party camps out while on the way from Central City to Chalo, later on). And... perhaps... Virdon and Burke didn't regain consciousness until that evening, and stayed in that "cave" until the next morning -- discovering that they were on a planet of talking (and gun-shooting) apes the day after their landing, about the same time that Veska's gorilla courier arrived in Central City.

Another possibility: although Chalo may be 30 miles south of Central City "as the crow flies"... it might be impossible for an ape to gallop from Central City to Chalo (or vice versa) on such a straight line trajectory. Perhaps there is a river to cross, and the nearest bridge spanning it takes one a ways either west or east first, before the southbound trip to Chalo can be completed. There may be a canyon involved, for all we know, impassable to horses. So, even though Central City and Chalo may be separated by 30 miles on a flat map, the actual travel distance by road on horseback may very well be a considerably longer distance than 30 miles, requiring more time to travel.

Otherwise, that gorilla should've been able to get to Zaius that same day, probably.

As far as simian postal services go, I'd say that the ape equivalent of a "pony express" would likely be used. Certainly, some information would not be transmitted via the heliograph posts. Veska sent a gorilla as a courier to deliver the message personally, not entrusting it to a heliograph operator. As a matter of state security, Veska didn't let the message go to Zaius in a way that might easily be compromised. What if there were a string of, say, 30 heliograph operators between Chalo and Central City, spaced a mile apart or so... Who's to say that one of them might transmit the secret message and then blab that secret to friends who perhaps share his anti-Zaius views?

To keep the message a secret, Veska entrusts it to his gorilla trooper.

As for the notion of communication between the Central City (California area) apes and the NYC region apes... I don't think that there was any communication in any real sense. In my scenario, the events of CONQUEST and BATTLE take place on the West Coast (in an arcology city built over the site/territory of San Simeon, between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and Caesar's treefort "Ape City" is north-and-east of that eventually nuked city.

After the events of BATTLE, Mendez -- discovering the Archives tapes that Caesar went to all that trouble to view -- deems it proper to lead his community of survivors as far away from the belligerent Aldo-types... bringing the Bomb through the military tunnel system connecting various governmental and military base sites across the country, all the way to the Washington D.C. area and beyond (i.e. eventually to the NYC area).

Caesar eventually (near the time of his death ~ 2070 A.D.) takes it upon himself to destroy the weapons in the armory, to prevent their ever being used belligerently against the "mad" humans whom he thinks still live in the Forbidden City, not knowing that they've skedaddled across the continent decades earlier. Caesar's unilateral decision to render the Ape-and-Human community gunless causes the gorillas to secede from the community (which is why the nice Lawgiver has no gorilla children in his audience at the end of BATTLE circa 2670 A.D.).

Less than a century later, the human-hating Lawgiver who wrote the Sacred Scrolls meets up with the gorillas living barbaric lives far from Caesar's region. Somehow, the gorillas discover how to make guns & bullets -- either reinventing it themselves, or being shown how to do so by others. With these new weapons (which replace the bows and arrows which they've been using, like those carnivorous gorillas Cornelius discovered in the Cave), the Gorillas -- and their human-hating orangutan Lawgiver -- descend upon Caesar's region, imposing their new ways on the backsliding (i.e. human-loving) Chimpanzees and Orangutans, and enslaving the Humans... so that, a few centuries later, the West Coast region becomes what it is in Galen's time.

But this West Coast population is isolated from the NYC area. There is no "postal" system sending messages to-and-fro across the continent. At some point after the events of the TV show, the "House of Zaius" will have to lead an uprooted Ape community from the West Coast region across the surface of the continent, as far away as they can go. Perhaps Zaius (or his successor) learns more specifics about the "doomsday" events spoken of by the "ghosts" of Cornelius and Zira: an "ape war of aggression" waged by an armed gorilla army against the "unknown" (yet probably human) enemy living in the "forbidden" city nearby...

If Zaius (in 3085 and later) knows that King Caesar long ago destroyed the guns of the Armory in order to try to prevent that "prophesied" war that would lead to the destruction of the Earth... then the presence of a guntoting gorilla army in his own day so very near to the "forbidden city" which once invaded Caesar's "Ape City" might be seen as a danger that could only be avoided by the mass-migration of Apedom across the continent.

Not knowing that it would bring them next door to the very descendants of those mutant Humans who had fled the region a millennium earlier.

In my scenario, that's how Zaius' lineage became transplanted from California to the NYC region, from 3085+ to 3955. In other words, there wasn't any civilization to speak of in the NYC region until the House of Zaius transplanted Apedom from California to there in the late 31st Century. There had only been barbarian gorillas on that East Coast region -- some even resorting to carnivorism... perhaps even cannibalism. One other reason to relocate Apedom from California to the NYC region would be to "convert the pagans" (i.e. the barbaric gorillas still living there) to the "one true religion" now fully followed by Zaius et al. A religion which has learned the Lawgiver's lesson that Man could not be tamed and allowed to live amongst Apes as "pets" but, rather, must be driven back to his jungle lair and all that.

So... no cross-continental postal system, Bill. Sorry! At least, not in my scenario.

        Patrick

Thanks Patrick, As always your theories breath new life into the POTA gaps.

DO you think that there were any ape settlements in Canada?
Possibly the Gibons that appear in the Marvel POTA mags?

There had only been barbarian gorillas on that East Coast region -- some even resorting to carnivorism. .. perhaps even cannibalism.

        Patrick

Well, here's the thing: I took it down at the request of Timeline
Books, as they feel it might be a hindrance to sales. In time,
though, once the book is out there, I might want to put it back
up. I did regret having to take it down.

Same here--I've found wildly divergent ideas about this topic.

No, no--not at all. I'm actually hoping the book creates controversy
and an interesting debate. If not, I haven't done my job. :)

I go back and forth on this one, as I know Dehn intended to make it
circular, but some things don't add up well from one film to the
next, making a linear model more appropriate. I do favor the
circular side of the debate simply because I'm drawn to the idea that
all of Caeaar's noble intentions will come to naught since history
will still follow the same tragic path, but I can definitely see
evidence for the opposite stance...he said, riding the fence.

        Not a chance, eh.

Their bow-legged stance makes them terrible skaters so hockey is out of

Of course, Boulle proved that they do speak French rather well, so

10 years ago I had one of the best POTA dedicated websites on the internet
        but overtime it "fell apart"

I really feel that POTA deserves a nice Fan Club site
I want it to be a great useful site for dedicated fans but more importantly to non-POTA fans
to draw them in with a great variety of useful info on the series
that will make them want to watch these classic movies etc.

Hunter's site landed up being what I originally wanted mine to be 10 yrs ago
He now definitely has the best site for POTA product for sure
so no sense going that same route
but I want something to lure new fans in
the 40th anniversary is a great time to do this

I am still a bit short of time but it doesnt do us much good having a website empty and useless
So if any fans would like to help participate in helping upgrade the website I'd appreciate any help or input

I'm open to ideas from you all - thanks
Lets give POTA the support it needs this year !

In ESCAPE, Armando exuberantly refers to the offspring of Heloise as "... the first chimpanzee ever to be born in a circus!"

In CONQUEST, Armando -- when he is being interrogated by Breck, et al. -- refers to his missing ape as being "... the only chimpanzee" to have been born in a circus.

Assuming that he is being more-or-less honest here, this is interesting. Of course, we know that both Salome (Heloise's daughter, i.e. Lewis Dixon's goddaughter) and 'Baby Milo' (i.e. Caesar) were born in Armando's circus... making them the first two chimpanzees ever to be born in a circus. Armando, of course, is pretending that his male chimp (whom he never names in the presence of Breck) is the same baby chimp that had been famously born some twenty years earlier, "a month before the talking apes arrived on Earth!"

Had the Ape-onauts never landed, Armando's circus chimp Salome would indeed have gone on to have the "distinction" of being the first circus-born chimpanzee.

I find it curious, though, that he would later refer to the now-male chimpanzee as "the only chimpanzee" to be born in a circus.

We can deduce, I think, that Heloise bore no more children -- perhaps because she was, by then, either too old to do so (she looked rather 'old' in my opinion), or because Armando could never find a male chimpanzee to breed with her.

Perhaps because it became impossible for a circus to add another adult chimpanzee to its menagerie. In the wake of the appearance -- then murder -- of the Ape-onauts, this suggests that some rather momentous events took place between ESCAPE and CONQUEST.

It was to be another ten years before the Plague wiped out all the Dogs and Cats. I think that before the onset of the Plague, it had already become evident to the powers-that-be that Apes would have to be a controlled species. Circuses which already owned Apes would be able to keep them, but not add to their numbers. Perhaps somebody realized that Cornelius and Zira had been inconsistent in their testimony regarding the onset of the ability of Apes to speak. Earlier, in their testimony to the Presidential Commission, they had said that the English language had been the language of their simian ancestors going back "two thousand years, roughly"... contradicting the later interrogation testimony regarding the advent of "and ape named Aldo" who spoke the first word ("No!") some 500 years after the Plague.

If somebody, say, in 1974 happened to notice this testimonial discrepancy, maybe the long-term planners of America's future thought it wise to test so-called "primitive" apes to see whether or not they had the vocal apparatus to make human-like speech, just like the Ape-onauts.

That might help to explain how no circus could ever again have a baby chimpanzee born in it. Salome/Caesar would be thought of as the first and only chimpanzee ever born in a circus.

Perhaps, when circuses in general became "past history" due to the transformation of America into an oppressive police state, Armando's became the very last of the circuses, spending most of its time in "the Provinces" -- in rural areas generally far away from the Cities.

Did Armando's circus once own an adult male chimp who, perhaps, died after having impregnated Heloise? If so, I suggest that such a male chimp be named "Abelard"...

regarding one of the most (if not the most) hyped 40th Anniversary tie-ins, the five issues of APE CHRONICLES.. .

From what I understood, all five issues were set to go, so I'm wondering who (if anyone) has received their issues yet? If so, what is the content like? Is it all 40th Anniversary related features/articles, or is there more to them?

I know there were a few people on here who ordered them, and I'd really appreciate hearing their feedback... I know Mr. Foster was supposed to receive a set,

Well, at least the fish on Joel Madden's hat was apropos.

Maybe it's just us, but the Good Charlotte frontman's outfit at the
grand opening of the SugarFish by Sushi Nozawa restaurant in Marina
del Rey Monday night leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes, we know, Joel's a so-called rocker and obviously feels he has
the whole "I don't care how I look, even though I really do" image to
        maintain.

But seriously, what's up with wearing a Planet of the Apes-inspired
hoodie to the christening of a high-end restaurant? It's sushi, not
        Subway.

While we certainly don't expect a suit, or even a buttoned-down
shirt, it would just be nice if the hipster thing got toned down
        every now and then.

As for Nicole Richie's oversized, Charles Nelson Reilly glasses?
        Don't get us started.

Here is all you need to know about UCI:

Our mascot was the anteater. They'd let the students vote on it back
in the late Sixties, and anteater just beat out "none of the above."

The campus was the setting for "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes"
(considered by "Planet of the Apes" aficionados to be the most
violent of the "Planet of the Apes" movies).

A whole undergraduate housing unit is named after characters
        from "Lord of the Rings."

Anyway, my dad came to visit on my birthday. We were walking around
campus, and, as I introduced him to friend after friend, a curious
pattern emerged. No one was mentioning my birthday.

No, "Happy Birthday." No, "So what are your plans today for your
birthday?" No presents. It was obvious that they were up to
        something.

"My friends are planning a surprise party for me," I told my dad
smugly. "They don't think I know."

I told him that we should probably keep our dinner plans open because
I didn't know exactly when the party would be, and we needed to be
flexible. Secretly I decried my friends' lack of surprise-party
planning skills. I mean, not wishing me a happy birthday made it so
        obvious, right?

Of course, our main girl kind of likes him. She thinks he might like
her too because he's so much meaner to her than everyone else. The
closer they get to falling in love, the more they act and sound like
college-educated 2nd graders. But before they can tie the knot that
strangles her to death, a shining light of sanity enters the film.

By way of cute car wreck, she meets Ben Stiller who is funny,
successful, and owns a Dr. Zaius statue (I'll get back to this statue
in a bit). He is everything women who watch Sex and the City long
for. But because this is a movie where money beyond marginal
utility=LAME, she isn't quite sure about his prospects. They go on a
date and he earns some heavy negative points by being really charming
and nice. He even gets her a job, a favor she repays by dumping him
and going home to fuck the lice-infected sore sleeping on her couch
instead. That's pretty much how the movie ends. We filmed an epilogue
set ten years later where the now toothless and crack-addicted couple
casually steal orange juice and loafs of bread from WalMart, but the
        studio deemed it "too real".

Anyway, here's where I'm a genius: to the young idiots watching this
movie when it came out, this was a good ending. She picked the right
guy. But if I was going to have any faith in humanity, I had to hope
for a different mindset later down the line. And that's why I gave
Stiller the Dr. Zaius doll. Thanks to that doll, we can now recognize
that Stiller is not the corporate sell-out tool we though he was.
He's just a regular guy trying to do his best in a harsh, money-based
world. I mean, he's not even all that lame. It's not like I gave him
an Inspector Gadget or Looney Tunes doll. It's Planet of the Fucking
Apes! Sure, it would have been cooler if he had a Caesar instead of
        Zaius, but come on.

So in retrospect, what was once a light comedy has become a light
tragedy. Time has changed the hero to a villain and vice versa. In
that way, I've always thought of Reality Bites as an unofficial
sequel to The Merchant of Venice. Shakespeare and I both know what
we're doing when it comes to future interpretations.

When I finally finished the film and showed it to my son, he threw
Cheetos at the screen and called it stupid. Two years later he died
choking on one of those plastic display grapes. I would have given
him the Heimlich but we don't do that sort of thing in the church I
        belong to.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) The fifth film in the movie
series features a cool battle between apes and mutated humans who
worship a big, fat bomb. It's an army of ancient school buses versus
simians on horseback as the mutants attack Ape City. A scholarly
volume, Planet of the Apes as American Myth: Race, Politics and Popular
Culture by Eric Greene toiled mightily to explain the symbolism behind
the school bus attacks. A small film budget was the likely explanation.

The feud: “Clerks” director Kevin Smith vs. “Batman” director Tim Burton

The accusation: On the New York Post’s Page Six, Smith accused Burton
of ripping off one of his comic books with his ending to “Planet of the
        Apes.”

Back story: Smith had written a script for a “Superman” project that
Burton had planned to direct. But rather than work with Smith, Burton
immediately tossed his script out in favor of other ideas, angering
        Smith.

Trash talking: Burton’s statement to Page Six read: “Anyone who knows
me knows I would never read a comic book. And I would especially never
read anything created by Kevin Smith.”

        Great to see Neil.

On the Hungarian pages, (I assume you're using photo shop or some thing like it to colour) do you make the black and white line work transparent (the white portion anyway) so you can work behind or do you use the lasso tool to mark off areas?   ...if you see what I mean.

I use a program called Microsoft Picture It. It came free with my
computer and it's quite basic but it does the job. I trace out an
area and save it as a separate file, colour them, then re-assemble
them all back onto the original picture in layers. It's tricky and
not perfect, I'd like to think there was an easier way to do it.
I did start finding my way around Photo Shop, but then my computer
crashed and I haven't been able to borrow the software again to
        reinstall it.

sell her items for her to redo her new room. She has EVERYTHING! Busts
w/ the movies inside, ceramic busts, posters, masks, models, action
figures, comic books, books, coins, several Autographs (one has ALL
original cast on a large photo prior to cast members being deceased),
Vintage shirts, trading cards, etc....All are in EXCELLENT shape.
If anyone is interested, I will take photos of what you are interested
in. If I don't have an item posted - ask, she has a little of
everything. Just make an offer on items, ALL offers will be
considered. I will combine shipping if someone buys more than 1 item
        to keep shipping price down.

        Thank you,
        Ashley :)

        Hello,

I'm still getting some of the stuff out. So far I had
2 others that I have already sold. I just found
        another one described below:

        1) Is a POTA photo page that has Charlto Heston, Roddy
McDowell, Kim Hunter & Linda Harrison autographs on
the page. It is black background with the signatures
        in Silver.

If you are interested, let me know and make me an
        offer.

        Thank you,
        Ashley

        Monkeying around
        by Stephen Whitty/The Star-Ledger
        Wednesday June 11, 2008, 10:16 PM

It was a movie of shocks.

The first appearance of the gorillas - on horseback, with rifles,
        hunting humans.

The moment when that "damn, dirty ape" puts his hands on Charlton
Heston - and Heston finally finds his voice to shout at him.

The scene when Heston is brought into the monkey court, and his
clothes are ripped from him, leaving him naked (still a very big deal
        in theaters in 1968).

And then the end. Of course, the end.

And now on Friday, June 13th, there's the pleasant shock of seeing it
all on the big screen, again.

Heston: The last of his kindThe Landmark Loew's Jersey Theater is
running "Planet of the Apes" at 8 p.m., as part of their fun "Go Ape"
weekend in Jersey City. The next day brings "Mighty Joe Young," at
3:30, and then at 7 a double feature of the original "King Kong" and
its cutesy sequel, "Son of Kong." (Check their site for more info.)

The Saturday programming is fun, but will feel slightly out-of-place
to any Baby Boomer who grew up within reach of Ch. 9. We know the
only time for a Kong triple-feature is Thanksgiving - with Mighty
Joe's tug-of-war with Tor Johnson coming up some time after dessert.

"Planet of the Apes," though, is a truly welcome big-screen event.

For one thing, it's simply a terrifically entertaining movie.
Director Franklin J. Schaffner was no firebrand - a TV pioneer who'd
started on the cramped sets and small budgets of early dramas, he had
a weakness for overstuffed period pieces like "Patton" and "Nicholas
and Alexandra." Yet the action scenes here, particularly the initial
hunt of the humans, or the gorillas' chase of Heston through the
village, are excitingly staged and presage Schaffner's later work on
        the escape adventure "Papillon."

Goldsmith's soundtrack: A futuristic pastHeston, too, is particularly
good. "Planet" marked a crossroads for him - a transition from his
literally iconic heroes to the more damaged protagonists of "Will
Penny," "The Omega Man" and "Soylent Green" - and the movie captures
touches of a new onscreen anger and self-loathing. (His relationship
with Schaffner undoubtedly helped his performance; just a few years
before, Schaffner had directed one of Heston's more serious and most
overlooked movies, the Dark Ages drama "The War Lord.")

The other performances are all top-notch - choosing actors with
distinctive voices like Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter and Roddy McDowall
was particularly wise - as are the other creative contributions. John
Chambers' famous makeup suggests simians while giving the actors' own
features a chance to peek through; the smart sets and costumes look,
logically, like things the creatures would have developed on their
own. And Jerry Goldsmith's score, both primitive and avant garde, is
unforgettable - perhaps most unforgettable at the film's end, when
the music suddenly stops, and we hear nothing but Heston's curses,
and the roar of the waves.

Yes, the ending - that's what burns this movie so firmly into our
minds. But the famous twist is more than a trick. It grows out of a
smart, superior screenplay - adapted from Pierre Boulle's
novel, "Monkey Planet," by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling - that
never loses track of the movie's message, and only uses the future as
a way to talk about a present already roiled by issues of race and
        religion.

Heston and Hunter: Unequal relationsWatch it again, and listen as
Heston confronts the chimpanzees with how brutally they treated him -
and McDowall's Cornelius weakly protests "We thought you were
inferior." Or marvel at Maurice Evans' wiliness as Dr. Zaius, as the
old politician - both Minister of Science and Defender of the Faith -
tamps down any possibly controversial research. ("There is no
contradiction between faith and science... true science!")

And realize that "Planet of the Apes" is, and always was, about more
than a shock ending and some bad puns ("Human see, human do!") It's
about what it really means to be human. About what it really means to
        be a beast.

And about how little any of that has to do with opposable thumbs.

        I'll tell you why.
        It's cause I'm a very funny guy.
And the new film was a bad remake.
See how concerned Helena looks for
her future? The future of her career
and the future of her kids! They'll
all look like Burton. Very concerned...

Saulo Adami sent me a copy of his new book, "Diários de
Hollywood: Um brasileiro no Planeta dos Macacos." Scans of the front
and rear covers can be found on my site now.

The text of the book alternates pages in both Portuguese and English.
The English translation is pretty rough in many spots, but that
doesn't take away from Saulo's interesting story. The book chronicles
his visits to the U.S. in 1998 and 1999 to meet with Natalie Trundy,
Jeff Kreuger, Bill Blake, John Chambers, and others. The book is
illustrated with photos of, among others, the makeup session with Bill
Blake that turned Saulo into an ape.

It's a slim, but fun, read, and I encourage everyone to buy a copy
        from Saulo.
