the nose twitches.
Tim: Only Cornelius so far, although we're always
trying to improve the sculpture and hair pieces, perhaps you've seen the
latest one on our website (http://blendededge- fx.trubalcava. com/).
It won't be long before we have a Zira. Stay tuned!

Tom - I put this page together a little while back (and probably broke
copyright with all the pictures I used, but it's easy for anyone to
edit/remove these pages):

I hope it's reasonably accurate and fair?

Actually, "all right" is correct. There's no such word as "alright." Or at least that's what I was taught. Merriam-Webster now lists it: alright Pronunciation:
\(?)o?l-?ri- t, ?o?l-?\ Function: adverb or adjective Date: 1887 : all right usage The one-word spelling alright appeared some 75 years after all
right itself had reappeared from a 400-year-long absence. Since the early 20th century some critics have insisted alright is wrong, but it has its defenders and its users. It is less frequent than all right
but remains in common use especially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite common in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing <the first two years of medical school
were alright Gertrude Stein>. Hunter

I agree with you Patrick. Telepathy is commonly used in sci-fi. Telepahty is not uncommon in this genre that tipically looks from outside the box - as long as it make sense or is beleivable in the story.
In "Beneath" it is believable and adds nicely to the story.

*** What was stupid about it??? It's science fiction, and Telepathy has
been an idea knocked around by the best of 'em (as in Asimov's FOUNDATION series). I like how BENEATH dealt with the idea of Telepathy... as a coercive Mind-Control technique. A "holy weapon of
peace" just like their Bomb-God.
Stupid? It was BRILLIANT!

*** Hey, Wendy! Compliments are always welcome. They're a nice change from the occasional dig I get for inflicting my "Mothership" theory on LordT and others!
I do like your notion of genetic tinkering BACKFIRING and thus CAUSING the emergence of talking apes. My own scenario calls for intelligent talking apes [albeit apes who don't speak English] being
enslaved in Africa and Indonesia and THEN being shipped to America (etc) and then, eventually, learning the English language after a time. The ones doing such tinkering in my scenario did their
tinkering in Africa and Indonesia -- the indigenous population centers of Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and Orangutans.
In my scenario, after the Plague kills off the Dogs and Cats, Man
replaced their lost pets with many kinds of animals. First, with critters like marmosets, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils [heyyy... no Richard Gere jokes, you monkeys!], etc etc. Then small monkeys like
capuchins, howlers... then small apes like gibbons. Then INFANT apes (chimp, gorilla, orang).
It was only when they ran out of BABY apes that they had to resort to
importing ADULT apes... and to effectively deal with ADULT apes they had to put them through severe BEHAVIORAL CONDITIONING treatments.
That's where "APE MANAGEMENT" has its genesis. It's one thing to raise a baby chimp in a human household -- that's been done numerous
times, quite successfully if you don't turn the growing ape from a pet into a slave. It's a whole 'nuther thing to take an adult ape
from the wild into your home and expect it to "behave" itself in a manner that is safe for humans. The cruel yet Pavlovian "conditioning" is designed to give humans control over
creatures which are considered wild animals.
One other thing about genetic "tinkering": who tinkered Mandemus into a talking ape? He's portrayed as being OLDER than Caesar -- born
BEFORE the arrival of the Ape-onauts in 1973. Who, prior to 1973, had the ability to genetically tinker with simian DNA?
Well, my scenario has an answer for that, but I'll skip it for now.
Nice to hear from you again. You're knee-deep in Theatre... I live in Fargo, North Dakota... and ever since the storm we had last Sunday
I've been knee-deep in snow and cold temperatures. As Mike might say, "Crikey!"

It was only when they ran out of BABY apes that they had to resort to importing ADULT apes... and to effectively deal with ADULT apes they
had to put them through severe BEHAVIORAL CONDITIONING treatments.
That's where "APE MANAGEMENT" has its genesis. It's one thing to
raise a baby chimp in a human household -- that's been done numerous times, quite successfully if you don't turn the growing ape from a
pet into a slave. It's a whole 'nuther thing to take an adult ape from the wild into your home and expect it to "behave" itself in a manner that is safe for humans. The cruel yet
Pavlovian "conditioning" is designed to give humans control over creatures which are considered wild animals.
One other thing about genetic "tinkering": who tinkered Mandemus into
a talking ape? He's portrayed as being OLDER than Caesar -- born BEFORE the arrival of the Ape-onauts in 1973. Who, prior to 1973, had the ability to genetically tinker with simian DNA?
Well, my scenario has an answer for that, but I'll skip it for now.
Nice to hear from you again. You're knee-deep in Theatre... I live in
Fargo, North Dakota... and ever since the storm we had last Sunday I've been knee-deep in snow and cold temperatures. As Mike might say, "Crikey!"

like the idea that somebody did tinker with the three apes genes in
order to stop the inevitable only to have it backfire. (It certainly
adds a great twist to this plot that seems to be full of holes.)
Remember, the apple in Eden
certainly gave rise to our being kicked

back I was working on novel based on the idea of the consequence of
tinkering with the three apes genes so to stop in this so called
paradox. In my version, my main character was the result of this
tinkering; a human being whom not only had telepathic powers but
could shape shift from human to ape. It might seem ridiculous to the
conservative ape fan, but hey, why not look outside the box.

*** Hey, Wendy! Compliments are always welcome. They're a nice change
from the occasional dig I get for inflicting my "Mothership" theory
on LordT and others!
I do like your notion of genetic tinkering BACKFIRING and thus
CAUSING the emergence of talking apes. My own scenario calls for
intelligent talking apes [albeit apes who don't speak English] being
enslaved in Africa and Indonesia
and THEN being shipped to America
(etc) and then, eventually, learning the English language after a
time. The ones doing such tinkering in my scenario did their
tinkering in Africa and Indonesia
-- the indigenous population
centers of Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and Orangutans.
In my scenario, after the Plague kills off the Dogs and Cats, Man
replaced their lost pets with many kinds of animals. First, with
critters like marmosets, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils [heyyy... no
Richard Gere jokes, you monkeys!], etc etc. Then small monkeys like
capuchins, howlers... then small apes like gibbons. Then INFANT apes
(chimp, gorilla, orang).

I have a handful of Apes items, but I don't have storage space to
collect everything (or else I would). I collect too many other things
to have space for it all, unfortunately.
So now I still drool over the ads. 8-)

Great to have you back – WELCOME!
Yes, I agree the USA POTA Set is remarkable.
Being a Blu-Ray convert, I struggle to
justify re-collecting al my DVDs. However, I have decided to because the
quality improvement is equal to the gap between VHS and DVD. But it’s
killing me! The TERNIATOR on BR here in AUS is only the theatrical
version and I know there’s an “ULTIMATE” DVD with FAR more on
it.
And that’s the norm – just the
better quality picture, but no further reason to switch.
Whereas the POTA set is a REAL reason to
switch. Packed with extras, and the only way you’ll have that HD
version of CONQUEST on DVD.
I think we are VERY lucky!!!

Hey Michael,
I don't have the POTAs yet but I do have
blu-ray (and HD-DVD, which I dived into when it sank and got a player and a lot
of movies CHEAP). The quality is just insane and I can only imagine what "Apes"
will be like.
But there's no need to rebuy everything. It
still plays the old DVDs. Though I have to admit DVD is like VHS after watching
blu-ray.

but I do have blu-ray (and HD-DVD, which I dived into when it sank and got a
player and a lot of movies CHEAP). The quality is just insane and I can only
imagine what "Apes" will be like.
But there's no need to
rebuy everything. It still plays the old DVDs. Though I have to admit DVD is
like VHS after watching blu-ray.

Hi

Great to
have you back WELCOME!
Yes, I agree the USA POTA Set is
remarkable.
Being a
Blu-Ray convert, I struggle to justify re-collecting al my DVDs. However, I
have decided to because the quality improvement is equal to the gap between
VHS and DVD. But its killing me! The TERNIATOR on BR here in
AUS is only the theatrical version and I know theres an ULTIMATE DVD with
FAR more on it.
And thats
the norm just the better quality picture, but no further reason to
switch.
Whereas the
POTA set is a REAL reason to switch. Packed with extras, and the only
way youll have that HD version of CONQUEST on
DVD.
I think we
are VERY lucky!!!

much for movie star glamour. There might be a point where things are TOO clear.

Yeah that’s (one of!) my problem(s?) Jeff – I’m a
quality nut!
I feel there’s no point watching something on DVD now
if I can see it on BR because the picture, and sound, is just so far superior.
Sally watched Grey’s Anatomy on BR the other day and
you could read the “scribble” on their PROP notepads!
WOW! You could actually read it and see it was gobbledygook!
I guess the next thing is where you step into the picture!

I agree. I Rented Space 2001 the other day on blu ray. And while the quality as was pretty amazing, the movie was still boring as ever and put me fast asleep. With Planet of the Apes there's never a boring
moment. Just great depth in character and story.

There are actually two more books after 2010, which have never been
filmed. 2061 is not a bad book, though I'm not sure how exciting it
would be on film. 3001 just sucked--it was about Frank Poole, the
astronaut HAL sent flying out into space by cutting his lifeline. The
book was pointless and forgettable, and the ending was just as
ridiculous as that of Independence Day. <.html

Blu-Ray-Review.htm
1968 produced two memorable science fiction films. One of these
movies is considered by many to be the greatest science fiction film
of all time. The other is Planet of the Apes. However, if you look
closely at both films, you will see that Planet of the Apes shares
much in common with 2001: A Space Odyssey and is as important an
addition to the genre as the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece.
Charlton Heston is George Taylor, an astronaut aboard a spacecraft
very similar to the one in 2001. When the film starts he explains, in
exposition, that he is on a mission exploring a theory that as the
crew of the ship travels through space they age at a decreased rate
than the people remaining on Earth. We also get a look at his
personality as he expresses his disdain with the human preconception
of greed and war. He finally enters into a sleep chamber, joining his
three fellow crew members for a long nap.
Following the ship crashing on an unknown planet, the next thirty
minutes of the film focuses on the three astronauts (the fourth died
upon arrival) as they attempt to figure out what kind of planet they
have landed on. The first clue they find is that plant life is unable
to grow in the section of the planet they landed. They walk for a
great distance and soon find an area with plant life once again
before finally discovering what appear to be fellow humans.
These humans are all dressed as cavemen and none seem to be able to
speak. They act as savages and Taylor jokes that if everyone on this
planet is like this, they will rule it in short time. Unfortunately,
he would quickly discover he will never be able to control this
planet when they are attacked by a group of apes, on horseback, with
guns. The apes are hunters and kill many of the humans, torture
others and capture the rest. Following the attack, Taylor is amazed
when he realizes the apes can speak.
The movie rises above its reputation thanks to the political and
racial undertones in the story. When you listen to the way the apes
speak of humans, it is clear the influence the filmmakers took from
such current events as the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
and the race riots occurring at the time. There are many examples of
the dissatisfaction with the war in Vietnam and the entire climax
focuses the fear of the general public onto the development of the
nuclear arms program. During the inquisition of Taylor, there is a
strong similarity to the actions of the House Un-American Activities
Committee.
The final incident is obvious as one of the screenwriters was
blacklisted Michael Wilson. Wilson and Rod Serling, who added much of
the racial undertones, sprinkled the film with so many ideological
theories that the movie becomes much more than a simple action movie
concerning a man overwhelmed by a world ran by apes. These apes make
comments that are similar to how racists speak about any minority and
it is clear the idea of role reversal is meant to bring this attitude
into the light.
None of this would matter if the acting were not up to par. When I
first viewed Planet of the Apes, I believed Charlton Heston was
annoyingly over-the-top. During the opening narration I still grow
annoyed at Hestonâs acting and feel he is just chewing scenery.
However, once Taylor reaches the planet, his overacting is much more
in tone with the rest of the story. When he finally lets it be known
to the apes he can speak and yells âget your hands off me you damn
dirty apesâ it couldnât be any more perfect. Both Roddy McDowall and
Kim Hunter are also fantastic in their roles as the apes sympathetic
to the plight of Taylor. Maurice Evans lends just the right amount of
arrogance and danger to the role of antagonist Dr. Zaius. It is a
quality cast from top to bottom.
The special effects were quite good for 1968 but there are points in
this high definition transfer that flaws appear. The mouths of the
apes are a problem as they never really move with the dialogue and
when Zira and Cornelius kiss at one point it looks ridiculous. This
can all be overlooked because even these flaws add charm to the film.
The movie was one of a kind and was a precursor to Star Wars, a later
franchise that would take the ideas of Planet of the Apes marketing
and run with it. While it may not be as good as the superior 2001: A
Space Odyssey, it remains just as important a landmark in cinema
history.
The Video
The picture looks magnificent for a movie forty years old. Everything
is crisp and clear and, while there are still some scratches and dust
particles, it still looks great. This is a perfect example of why all
movies should use the 50 GB Dual Layer discs.
The Audio
The sound is presented in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. There is also an
English mono track, a Spanish mono track and French 5.1 Dolby
Digital. The sound is great and the music score, so important for
this movie, sounds really solid as presented here. My only problem is
the sound effects during action scenes are loud and pronounced but
the dialogue is softer and it is hard to keep the volume at an even
level in either instance.
The Packaging
The Blu-Ray comes in the familiar slim blue case. When you put it in
the player, it opens with an animated introduction to the movie by
The Lawgiver. When the options screen comes up, various arty looking
images are shown including one that spoils the end reveal of the
movie for anyone who has been living in a cave the last 40 years.
The Extras
Lawgiver Introduction - This is not the same introduction that opens
the Blu-Ray upon its start. It is the same animation but explains the
movie and tells the story of when the talking man fell from the skies
to bring the end of days.
Commentary by Actors Roddy McDowell, Kim Hunter and Natalie Trundy,
and Makeup Artist John Chambers - This would be a nice commentary
track if there were not long periods of silence. There is some
interesting information but it was disappointing to have so much
blank space.
Commentary by Composer Jerry Goldsmith - This track is just as bad as
the actorâs commentary with extremely long periods of silence as
well. Both tracks could have been combined as one rather easily.
Text Commentary by Eric Greene, Author of Planet of the Apes as
American Myth - There is a lot of good information given in this text
commentary. It is also nice because you can watch the text commentary
while listening to the audio commentary tracks.
Science of the Apes BONUS VIEW - This is a Blu Ray exclusive, the
fourth feature to watch during movie playback. This is a picture-in-
picture feature where we hear from scientists, educators and experts
in the space program. Unlike the other tracks which deal with the
film itself, this one deals with the scientific theories and ideas
behind what we see in the movie. It is pretty technical stuff, but
explained in a manner anyone can understand. If you like learning,
this is a good track. I like it.
Beyond the Forbidden Zone Adventure Game - This is a desk top game
that is full of very hard questions. Basically, the only way you can
succeed at this game is to be a genius or to have watched the BONUS
VIEW where all the answers lie. If you didnât pay attention to the
BONUS VIEW, you will suck at this game.
Public Service Announcement from ANSA (06:06) - A fake informational
feature presented by the fictional ANSA organization from the movie.
I guess its purpose is to explain why the astronauts were sent on
this mission to begin with. It also talks about the âscientific
theoryâ of the astronauts not aging as fast in space.
Evolution of the Apes Featurette (23:37) - This is a feature narrated
by James Brolin tracing the path from Pierre Boulleâs novel to the
actual movie franchise. There is a great difference between the novel
and the book, as the apes in the novel replaced the humans who
slipped into apathy. The world in the novel is much the same as the
real world, except with apes in control. Much is spoken about
screenwriter Rod Serlingâs (The Twilight Zone) influence in adding
the ideas of racism and discrimination to the story. Serling also
came up with the twist ending, which was also not in the novel.
Michael Wilson came aboard and made the changes eliminating the real
world look to make the movie more affordable to the weakened studios.
This is a great feature covering how a novel is adapted into a
feature film.
Impact of the Apes Featurette (11:39) - Various people (actors,
writers, normal Joes) talk about how Planet of the Apes impacted
them. It goes into a big discussion of the merchandising of the
franchise and how it is responsible for the wide merchandising of
movies today.
Behind the Planet of the Apes Documentary with Interactive Mode
(2:06:44) - At over two hours, this documentary is hosted by Roddy
McDowall. If you watch it with the Interactive Mode on, the
documentary will be seen in a small box on the left side of the
screen while interactive choices are presented on the right side to
read along with the documentary. The documentary is the same one that
was on the 35th Anniversary Edition. It is a comprehensive and
fantastic feature that focuses on every aspect of the film and talks
to just about everyone involved. It is up there with the best
documentaries I have seen about the making of any film.
Behind the Planet of the Apes Promo (02:19) - This is the trailer for
the documentary.
The Archives of the Apes - The first feature in this section is the
Original Makeup Test with Edward G. Robinson [1966] (09:34). This is
a narration of the original novelâs story with drawings used to show
the story. Around three minutes in, we get the actual acting scenes
with Charlton Heston (as Taylor) and Edward G. Robinson (as Dr.
Zaius) playing out the scene. This was a scene used to sell the
movie. James Brolin also appears as a young ape in the scene.
The second item here is Roddy McDowallâs On-Set Footage (20:14).
During the first eight minutes, we witness, step-by-step, the makeup
process as McDowall is transformed into the ape Cornelius. We then
see behind the scenes footage throughout the shoot. This is all
overlaid with music and no dialogue. Next up is Dailies and Outtakes
(19:50), all with no audio. This shows a lot of footage but there is
no music overlaid or anything, it is completely silent. N.A.T.O.
Presentation [1967] (10:30) is a cliff notes version of the film,
kind of a series of clips in order throughout the movie.
Next up is a Vintage Planet of the Apes Featurette [1968] (04:42). It
is a full screen featurette with a voice over narration explaining
what you are seeing. You get to see here how the face casts are made.
Thatâs about the only interesting thing about this feature. Finally,
we get the Teaser Trailer (02:18), which calls the movie the yearâs
most important film, and the Theatrical Trailer (03:05).
The Galleries of the Apes - Broken into sections, this presents a
gallery. Using the remote, you can view close-ups of images or read
articles you choose. The first section is The Ape, a newspaper from
the ape city with articles such as Big Round-Up Of Human Beasts and
Female Human Selected For Genetic Experiments. These are amusing and
interesting if you are bored and have the time on your hands. Next up
is an Interactive Pressbook. Here you get a number of items including
posters and items from the original press kit. I like this kind of
stuff, so itâs a bonus for me. Advertising is a 30 second montage
cycling through the various posters for the movie. Lobby Cards is a
27 second montage similar to Advertising with still photos from the
movie. Makeup is 48 seconds of pictures of various items used as
makeup in the film. Costume Design Sketches presents 30 seconds of
drawn pictures of characters from the film. Props is 30 seconds of
stills of props used in the movie. Behind-the-Scenes is just what it
claims, clocking in at 1:18 of still photos.
The Film: 9.0/10.0
The Video: 10.0/10.0
The Audio: 8.0/10.0
The Packaging: 10.0/10.0
The Extras: 10.0/10.0
The 411: Planet of the Apes might be remembered as a simple science
fiction action movie pitting man against apes. However, there is much
more to the movie than that simple premise. It is a movie that paints
a striking portrait of racism, prejudice, pacifism, war mongering and
political unrest. With all these ideals at its disposal, it still
manages to present a rip roaring adventure story with loads of
tension and action. It holds up just as well today as it did when it
was released almost forty years ago. This Blu-Ray release presents a
pristine picture that is almost flawless in its presentation. It also
includes all the great features from previous releases plus some
great new HD quality features. With over three hours of extras plus
the various commentary and text tracks, this is a fantastic release
for a great movie.
Final Score: 9.5 [ Amazing ] legend <.html

Leo Lotito Jr., a six-time Emmy Award nominee whose Hollywood make-up
career spanned four decades, died Dec. 13 in Los Angeles. He was 86.
According to representatives from Local 706, the West Coast make-up
and hairstylist union, Lotito (who served as a Marine during World
War II) learned make-up techniques from Ern Westmore and joined the
union in 1947. Over the course of his career, Lotito honed his
special make-up skills, excelling (as the union described it)
in âfantastic creatures scaly and furry.â Although he wasnât
credited, Lotito worked with John Chambers to create the Dr. Zira
make-up for The Planet of the Apes; he also worked on the filmâs
sequel. His other film credits include Riders of the Pony Express,
The Terminal Man, Cleopatra Jones, White Line Fever, Butch Cassidy
and the Sundance Kid and Oh, God!
Lotito worked extensively in television as well, on the programs The
Millionaire, The Jack Benny Program, Alfred Hitchcock Presents,
Riverboat, The Virginian, The Blue and the Gray and Mystic Warrior.
He was nominated for an Emmy Award six times and worked with Raquel
Welch, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck, Lana Turner,
George Segal, Robert Redford and Paul Newman.
Lotito directed the make-up department for The Burbank Studios from
the late â80s through the early â90s. Although he announced his
retirement in 1986, the studio recruited him to run the make-up and
hairstyling department for several years afterward. He traveled
around the world multiple times; in 1979, he was invited to China for
six weeks to teach make-up artists his techniques.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Ann and a daughter, Tricia.
Services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 at the Kingdom
Hall Jehovah Witness, 220 Erbes Rd. in Thousand Oaks, California. <.html

I totally disagree. I love that whole trek in the desert.
One of the things I hated about POTA 2001 was that the apes appeared less than 10 minutes into the film.
No depth at all. Nothing but a chase and scream popcorn flick.

It's meant to be boring. When asked why "The Trek"
was so long, Schaffner replied, "Because it sets the tone
for the entire film." I agree. They're supposed to be
lost

I agree it's worth it to have the Blu-Ray. Every movie I've bought

.html
I'm not sure what you mean, Neil. Why would Taylor refer to "the four of them" (i.e. himself, Dodge, Stewart, and Landon) as "the Class of '72"? What class could he be talking about other
than an Air Force Academy class?
I don't think this line of dialogue makes any
sense other than being a reference to Landon having been in the Air Force Academy, having entered that 4-year program in 1968 (i.e. the "Class of '72" since that's the year -- 1972 -- when that
class would graduate). And Landon's status as "the Golden Boy" of that class doesn't make much sense unless it refers to his qualifications in aeronautics (and like disciplines). Landon was an
"ace"... a "top-gun" type of pilot, who had displayed superior abilities flying planes (and, most probably, spacecraft in flight-simulators). He was so damned good a pilot that others
referred to him as "the Golden Boy" of his class [he certainly wouldn't have referred to himself
as a "Golden Boy"!]. He was so excellent a pilot that the guys at ANSA nominated him for their upcoming Orion Mission ["the Big One"] about half a year before he was due to graduate
from the Air Force Academy.
Did Landon want to go? No! Taylor implies as much, but ribs Landon about it, saying that he "couldn't turn it down" since doing so would cause him to lose his All-American image. That reference to Landon
as an "All-American" means that he was vain: he liked his reputation as the Best of the Best... and when you're the Best and your country calls upon your talents,
you don't turn 'em down
. He was an ultra-patriot. That's why he plants that tiny flag in the sand on the shore of Dead Lake -- and Taylor's response to seeing that tells us not only a great deal about the type of person Landon
is (in Taylor's eyes), but what kind of person Taylor himself is.
Taylor didn't volunteer out of any sense of patriotism, like flag-planting Landon, or Dodge -- who would walk naked into a live volcano in order to learn something nobody else knew. Taylor volunteered for the Big
One because he despised the Human Race and he had a chance to discover a better breed of intelligent life out in Outer Space.
When Landon plants the flag, Taylor laughs
... declaring his attitude that Landon's patriotism is Absurd. The U.S.A. was only 196 years old in 1972, when they left Earth, and Taylor believes that the descendants of the people they left behind [i.e. those
living in 3978 back on Earth, some 20 centuries into the Future] are as far above 20th Century Man as they are from Apes: "... even if you could
get back, they'd think you were something that fell out of a tree!" he tells Landon.
When I went through school, my High School senior year was from Autumn of 1982 through the Spring of 1983, which made my graduating class "the Class of '83." It is the year in which you are slated to
graduate that makes you a member of that year's Class. Taylor's reference to Landon as "the Golden Boy of the Class of '72" cannot mean a High School class, obviously! It can only refer to a class
in whatever academy that NASA (and ANSA) would recruit their prospective astronauts from.
Back when they made PLANET OF THE APES
, the vast majority of America's astronaut corps were recruited from the Air Force. Does it not make sense that it is just this sort of thing that Taylor's referring to? ANSA (in the POTA universe), just
like NASA (in both the POTA universe and in our real universe), had a need for exceptional pilots -- people who would be able to learn how to fly cutting-edge air- and space-craft in a short timeframe, since the Big One
was to launch from Cape Kennedy in January of 1972.
Who had the "right stuff" back then? The Air Force. They were the place where young men right out of High School went if they they had any aspirations whatsoever about becoming an Astronaut. A space agency
in need of qualified pilots -- be it NASA or ANSA -- would go to the #1 source for such personnel. The Air Force. They might also recruit qualified personnel from, say, the Navy (since the Navy also has pilot-training
courses, so that Navy pilots can fly jet aircraft off of aircraft carriers and go on bombing runs, etc etc), and, indeed, there are Navy men who have been NASA astronauts. But the majority -- at least, back in the
1960's and '70's -- were recruited from the USAF.

"2061" could make a decent film, especially if they went out of their way to make it as realistic as possible (the way Kubrick did, making sure to not have sound in the vacuum of space, etc). It is
possible for a superb director to turn a merely 'okay' novel into a magnificent film.
As for "3001", well, I agree that the ID4-like ending was a let-down. But the book's shortcomings are due more to Clarke's less-inspired writing. It reads like a quick first draft rather than a
polished, crafted piece of prose. He should've co-written it with some other talented SF writer, like the guy who co-wrote THE LIGHT OF OTHER DAYS with him.
I disagree with your assessment of "3001" as "pointless": in his previous "2001"-series books, he speaks of the Monolith-building beings as cultivators of Mind. They are planting seeds of
Consciousness on world-after-world, over the course of millions of years, the Galaxy being like a Garden where Intelligence can be grown. Like any garden, it sometimes needs weeding, when the emergent Minds are deemed
"wrong" for the garden.
In "2010", Clarke establishes that there were lifeforms existing in the atmosphere of Jupiter... and the Monolith-builders sacrificed those lifeforms in order to give the Europans living in the sub-ice ocean
of that Jovian moon a better chance to evolve their Minds. By transforming Jupiter into a small star, Europa became a planet, its biosphere able to transform into one in which a sea-creature can evolve into a
land-dwelling lifeform, capable of expanding its reach into new niches. The Monolith-builders deemed the lifeforms living in Jupiter's atmosphere to be expendable.
And, in "3001", Clarke has it that those same Monolith-builders ultimately "judged" the Human Race to be expendable. For whatever reason, they intend to "weed" Humanity from the galactic
Garden of Mind. Clarke had a great "final odyssey" to tell, and it could've been -- and should've been
-- a magnificent end to his series. If he had brought in a collaborator, then it might've been such a work. But Clarke -- alone -- had lost much of the magic that his earlier works evinced.
I did
like that he riffed on the whole Buck Rogers theme: a "modern-day" man catapulted into a glitzy Future. Buck Rogers made the jump from Our Time to the 25th Century, whereas Frank Poole is
"resurrected" (in a SF-plausible manner) twice as far into the Future, the year 3001.
Poole discovers that Humanity has indeed "improved" (by Clarke's estimation) over 20th Century Man, having transcended the savagery of our times, for the most part. As a POTA fan, I found it interesting
to see Clarke's 31st Century people and their contrast with somebody from 1000 years before their time. From their perspective, Poole was just barely removed from "something that fell out of a tree"
...
"2061" was a good book, though not as good as the novel "2010" [the novel, not
the horrid Peter Hyams adaptation]. "3001" had promise, but Clarke cranked it out too quickly, with less polish. He should've taken more time, worked with a collaborator, like he had done with his
RAMA sequels.
Even so, if they ever do make a film version of "2061" they could
do a film version of "3001" afterwards... and, despite that novel's shortcomings, a film adaptation could actually be made that not only improves on its source, but also makes for an exciting film.
Tom Hanks is a huuuuuge "2001" fan, so I'd like to see him
do the project. I could see him in a film version of "2061" as Heywood Floyd, properly aged with makeups. Roy Scheider was miscast as HF in "2010" in my opinion.
What I would really prefer, though, is for somebody to re-adapt "2010"... as a good movie, preferably a great one! Hyams' version sucked! Everything that made the novel excellent was jettisoned in his
crappy film. And the junk he added -- the US/Soviet crisis leading to a potential nuclear war back on Earth -- made the film a puerile morality play. All the Kubrickian "high concept" themes that made
"2001" a masterpiece were ditched in favor of mediocrity. Ugh!

very special mission, nothing to do with high school or 'the academy but a
smart arse 'Taylorism' referring to the ones chosen out of the group of
astronauts who would have trained for this mission. There are always back
ups who train for the missions as well aren't there?
And I thought by
'72 (in the real world) that NASA wasn't just using ex-test pilots for
astronauts, weren't at least a couple of scientists recruited and didn't one of
them even go to the moon?
Neil
Back when they made PLANET OF THE APES, the vast majority of
America's astronaut corps were recruited from the Air Force. Does it not make
sense that it is just this sort of thing that Taylor's referring to? ANSA (in
the POTA universe), just like NASA (in both the POTA universe and in our real
universe), had a need for exceptional pilots -- people who would be able to
learn how to fly cutting-edge air- and space-craft in a short timeframe, since
the Big One was to launch from Cape Kennedy in January of 1972.
Who had the "right stuff" back then? The Air Force. They were the place
where young men right out of High School went if they they had any aspirations
whatsoever about becoming an Astronaut. A space agency in need of qualified
pilots -- be it NASA or ANSA -- would go to the #1 source for such personnel.
The Air Force. They might also recruit qualified personnel from, say, the Navy
(since the Navy also has pilot-training courses, so that Navy pilots can fly
jet aircraft off of aircraft carriers and go on bombing runs, etc etc),
and, indeed, there are Navy men who have been NASA astronauts. But the
majority -- at least, back in the 1960's and '70's -- were recruited from the
USAF.

It's simple. He was the "young guy"
Taylor and Dodge were older. He said
so. But Landon was an "over achiever".
Hence the title, "Golden Boy of the Class of '72".
It just backstory exposition. If they didn't bitch at
each other in the desert we wouldn't get all this info.
It establishes the characters. We actually need them
to be that way. If Landon wasn't such a smart ass and
Taylor wasn't such a misanthropic dick it would be really
boring. What do you want? The Quiet Professionals as they
trek through the wasteland doing their jobs? No! They wouldn't
send guys like that on what amounts more or less to a suicide
mission anyway. At least it was after went and Stewart died on
them

Yes, several scientist-astronauts were recruited near the end of the Apollo program, though only one went due to the repeated budget cuts. Harrison 'Jack' Schmidt went as the
Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 17, the final mission.
