Ha! These are great--I love the dioramas of Brent and Taylor in the
mutant cell. And the romantic shots of Cornelius and Zira--too funny!

Jeff (RedSpy) has contributed an article from Famous Monsters 135
(July 1977). This article profiles actor Jay Robinson, who played
Bandor in the TV series episode "Tomorrow's Tide." The article
includes a photo of Jay being made up as Bandor. Thanks, Jeff!

OK – Neil and I are fresh from our High Definition GO APE Marathon !

PLENTY to talk about.

It really was like seeing the films for the first time.

Sound has MUCH improved for ALL movies.

Agreed Beneath is MOST IMPROVED.  There are colours there I never saw in the cinema prints or anywhere else!

So….anyone notice that Julius says something without moving his mouth?

One thing I did notice watching them one after the other was the phenomenal amount of mistakes and inconsistencies between and in the movies.
Not that they really bothered me, just made me realise how impossible and pointless it is to try and explain the mistakes away and to try and make it all fit together seamlessly.

Thanks. Only Caesar was mispelled. Oops. :o)
I'll have the site up by next month with this final version.

Also the site's domian name will be FoxMovieCountdown.com (or something along those lines) as I'm planning on counting down both Caesar and Avatar.

Here's the final header for Caesar.

How about the GEOGRAPHIC fuck ups?

Like how Brent is only JUST outside the city when he finds the entry to the underground, whereas the ape army is in the desert for AGES before they find it!

One thing I did notice watching them one after the other was the phenomenal amount of mistakes and inconsistencies between and in the movies.

Not that they really bothered me, just made me realise how impossible and pointless it is to try and explain the mistakes away and to try and make it all fit together seamlessly.

OH! OK – there’s a couple of films with the same name…

        [ edit] Feature film

On January 8, 2007, Paramount Pictures' MTV Films and Nickelodeon Movies announced that they have signed M. Night Shyamalan to write, direct and produce a trilogy of live-action films based on the series; the first of these films will encompass the main characters' adventures in Book One. [58] The film was in a dispute with James Cameron's film Avatar regarding title ownership,[59] which resulted in the film being titled The Last Airbender. It is set for release on July 2, 2010.[60] Shyamalan was attracted to the series because of its inspiring martial arts and spiritual theme, [61] after being introduced to the program by his children. Filming will begin in March 2009 and take place in Philadelphia and Greenland. Producer Frank Marshall stated the film may be moved to later in 2010 or even to early 2011, and that some filming could happen in the Far East.[62]

Thanks. Only Caesar was mispelled. Oops. :o)

I'll have the site up by next month with this final version.

Also the site's domian name will be FoxMovieCountdown. com (or something along those lines) as I'm planning on counting down both Caesar and Avatar.

Here's the final header for Caesar.

        Fair enough.

Brian, from APEMANIA, has been kind enough to answer some questions about the Blu-Ray Release.

Let me know if there's anything you would like to ask him….

          Michael

BRIAN: On their first visit to the studio to discuss things, the clients brought a piece of concept art for the boxed set cover. It looked like "Planet of the Apes meets Star Trek with a Tim Burton logo" and we told them so. They cringed when we made that analogy. Here's an idea of what it looked like:

BRIAN:  I was interviewed by the company that did all of the filmed inserts, and although I haven't seen all of the spots, I am being told that my interview is spattered throughout the special features in the boxed set. We also built the Icarus model that they used in that fun little Audio/Visual instructional ANSA video.

I was quite impressed as to how knowledgeable the two ladies in charge of the print department were. We banged out that Icarus model pretty quick for the video dept, and the girls were the first to note that the flags were pointed the wrong way, even though our model builders followed the kit's instrux to the letter. he instructions were wrong but we did not catch it in the blur of everything that we were prepping for the packages, photoshoots, and DVD interviews.

BRIAN: We were involved on many levels for the 40th Anniversary packages, both domestic and international. We worked closely with FOX and the different sub-contractors that they hired to do the cover and package designs for each region, both for the boxed sets as well as individual film covers. They are all different.

At the same time that was all happening, we were working with the print and box art contractor on the box design. They originally came out to the studio to discuss their "plans" for the 40th anniversary packages, and thought it best to discuss it all with someone close to the fan base.

We first looked at all of the problems with the previous releases, both 30th anniversary and the silly "friz-head" boxed edition. The team was very quick to beg for mercy as they were not the people involved in the poor choices made on the previous releases. They guaranteed us that they would not put the end of the movie scene on the box cover and that each movie would have the correct characters and scenes represented on them, unlike the 30th anniversary set.

It's interesting that he still refers to it as the Icarus model, given
that it's called Liberty 1 in the video. Maybe you could ask him his
reaction to the ship being named Liberty 1?

Ideally they could have used those poses (for the labels) and got Neil

If they want to say they used the correct characters on the DVDs/packaging, then why aren't Roddy, Maurice, Kim, Roddy and Claude the apes shown on the packaging? If they're supposedly the right apes on the packages, then I want their actual portrayers to be the one in the appliances. If they just said "We dressed up as the apes from the films and they used our pictures on them" that's one thing, but kind of implying that they used the film apes on them is deceiving, though not intentional. ***

I have an HD TV.  To be honest it was a pain in the ass.
The same shows would record twice on both channels
and the HD ones took up twice the space on the DVR.

Oh the picture is great!  But not good enough to
take up twice the space on the DVR.  But for DVDs
yes, very nice.  To be honest, I like the widescreen
aspect ratio better than the increase in picture quality.
It's like High Fidelity radio.  I don't think it sounds that
much better.  They just wanted to put stations in between
the regular stations so they could sell me a new radio.

The spaceship in Planet of the Apes may have indeed been called "ICARUS."

A movie was released back in 2006 called "SUNSHINE." The story of this film is based on 8 astronauts sent out into space to revive our dying sun in a spaceship called "ICARUS."

The connection? Both "Planet of the Apes" and "Sunshine" were released by 20th Century Fox. :o)

I saw this movie the other day on cable. Enjoyed so much I rented it on Blu Ray. For those who haven't seen it, you should check it out.

This film was directed by Danny Boyle  (2009 Golden Globe for Best Director) who of course also directed "Slumdog Millionaire" (2009 Golden Globe for Best Picture).

*** And thanks to those highly intelligent people who put the Blu-Ray set together, we'll never hear anything from any of them... They interviewed Buck for that and they didn't use one second of him... Do we get decent commentaries or interviews: Nope, what we get is some fake ANSA bullsh*t and improper (impersonator) apes on the packaging, not exactly what one should expect from something being touted by some as the be all and end all APES collection... Ricardo may not have been up to doing commentaries for ESCAPE/CONQUEST when they were putting this latest box set together, but they sure as hell could have hit him up a few years back to do some... He was used on BEHIND, why they didn't get film commentaries from him at the time is just idiotic. ***

Here's a nice personal remembrance of Mr. Montalban that touches on his early career as a Latin heartthrob and his later years in the "Spy Kids" movies (probably the role today's kids know him for). I'll just add I thought he had some of the most memorable comments in "Behind the POTA" . RIP.

They should have used somebody else, because there are far more knowledgeable people out there that could give a better (or different) perspective on the films. Mike - there's PLENTY of Russo commenting on the new specials.

Also, Greene does have some interesting points to make and some of the
points on the new specials are...new too!

I guess, like it or not, Greene is an (published) expert on apes who
wrote his book WELL before POTA became popular (again) so he will
keep popping up (I'd guess the price is right too!).
