everyone is as cheery as you Neil! :)
I think we should all be supporting this movie with positivity and
then we'll go see it and only when wa walk out of the theatre will we
know if it IS Planet of the Apes....

I really don't take any of this negative talk on Caesar too serious.
Remeber, back in 2001 most POTA fans where saying the same thing about Burton's POTA.
And yet, there is not one person on either POTA group that hasn't seen Burton's POTA.
So what does that tell you? ;o)

So how do people who won't accept a film using a character named Caesar as Planet of the Apes, feel about Return to the Planet of the Apes?
That used familiar names (obviously for the recognition factor and to cash in on the originals) but the settings, technology and just about everything else was NOT classic POTA.
Is Return acceptable as 'Planet of the Apes'? Or should it be renamed 'Return To The Planet Where Apes Talk And Rule On A Planet Which Isn't Really THE Planet of the Apes?
;-)
Neil
probably not....first because it wounds like it really won't have anything to do with it! and because it isn't from THAT world which is what I like about POTA....those characters, those stories....

To cap it of i also bet not one member hasn't at least one item from
the new film , be it a autograph/toy/poster/book or even screen used
costume and masks.
So how can anyone say that Burton's version has no merit at all.
Personally i thought the masks where fantastic and the gorilla army
costumes ( I want one ).

Exactly.
Bottom line: No matter how negative anyone gets towards Caesar, they will go see it and give it the benefit of the doubt.
Samething happened with POTA2001, samething will happen with Caesar, and same will happen for the next 50 POTA attempts for years years to come. That's just a simple matter of fact.
So again. Why be so negative?
Just smile and be happy. :o)

*** I'm not saying I would never see "CAESAR," all I'm really
saying is that if I'd see it, I'd be looking at it as it's own thing, and not
going into it thinking "This is the rebirth of the APES

film." I'd be taking it as it's own thing... It's way too early on to know
what they'll do as far as promotion and how they'll treat the originals when
marketing their quasi-APES film, but if they go into it trying to erase the
original APES like they did with pota2001, then I will absolutely NOT see it. No
way, no how.
And Neil, I can see you POV about people like myself, Tim, and a
few others when you ask "Where do you draw the line on what
is or isn't APES?" Let me put it to you like this: There are
people for whom only the 60s STAR TREK is TREK... Then there are some who really
only dig ST:TNG because it was "updated" for the time it was made. Others
will like both the original and TNG because the TNG didn't bastardize ST but
they don't try to mesh the two because they really know they are separate
entities, and then there are some who love EVERY entity of the TREK name simply
because it's ST... TREK fans have all sorts of variables as to what it's
followers like and don't like, etc. Why should APES be any different?

The issue is not what you thought of their cameos. The issue is being a huge fan of POTA and passing up a chance to see two major stars from the original POTA doing a cameo in a remake years later. Now that to
me shows an incredible retraint. Just totally blows my mind.

I never saw it until Fox aired it one night, and my curiosity overcame
my revulsion. Until it was over. The full revulsion came back.

*** I've seen a picture of Heston made-up and he looked horrible...
And as far as Harrison, she was in a film trailer (I did see one of those) and
from what I understand, her cameo was hardly longer than the blurb in there.
Either way, I wish both of them had refused to take any part in it... All they
did was feed the beast that dragged suckers in thinking "Oh, this will be great,
we get to see Linda and Heston." ***

Does anyone think it’s a coincidence
that a chimp was chosen for the head and, more specifically, the head of
CAESAR?
At the time I thought it was a curious choice and I wondered if maybe FOX was
trying to raise public awareness of Caesar.

*** Yes, but on what grounds? The "ULTIMATE" collection was
released in what, 2005 or so?
You're making an awful big leap of faith if you think
they made that head to get people primed up for a film that will deal with a
mute, signing ape who ends up being a revolutionary of sorts... Add to that that
the CAESAR film, if it even gets made, will not be released until at least
2010/2011... At the time of the "ULTIMATE" release, it's doubtful anything was
even planned, even in a preliminary state because if it was, why the hell would
they wait three years to announce it?
Even if you say the Caesar bust was just to get people primed up
for the release of the "Director's cut" of CONQUEST with the Blu-Ray set, I
wouldn't buy that either... Why would they release CONQUEST yet again if they
knew they were going to release it again at the time of the 40th Anniversary of
PLANET? And you can't say "Well, they were getting people excited about the
Blu-Ray releases" because A) At the time, they weren't even sure if Blu-Ray or
HD-DVD was going to be the high end format, and B) The Blu-Ray set was a last
minute rush job. They wanted to jump on the bandwagon so they finally dragged
their asses into the vault to get the original cut of CONQUEST so they could use
that as their draw card (the same way RETURN was their short-lived "ace in the
hole" to get people to buy the "ULTIMATE" collection)... The Caesar head is NOT
to promote the idea of a film that might never get made. (And no, I don't mean
that to be negative toward the film, I'm saying it matter of factly... Look how
many times in the past films have been announced and then they never get made...
Even on the FMC bit, that guy says something like "It may not get made this time
around, but it will eventually.")

"Where do you draw the line on what is or isn't
APES?" Let me put it to you like this: There are people for whom only the 60s
STAR TREK is TREK... Then there are some who really only dig ST:TNG because it
was "updated" for the time it was made. Others will like both the
original and TNG because the TNG didn't bastardize ST but they don't try to
mesh the two because they really know they are separate entities, and then
there are some who love EVERY entity of the TREK name simply because it's
ST... TREK fans have all sorts of variables as to what it's followers like and
don't like, etc. Why should APES be any different? ***

comics and they're pretty good. The art looks nothing at all like
classic POTA, but I enjoyed them and the stories are better than in
the movie.

A couple of weeks back, somone mentioned seeing the
actors' teeth behind the appliances in the series.
i was just watching "The Deception" and YES you can
see Jane Actman's teeth as Fauna. It seems everyone else had their teeth

Eeeee aaaahhh Yeah, that'd do it.
Actually, Kim had to make a trip
to the trailer to unceremoniously
have her makeup pried up and a
bubble squeezed out to the nearest
edge. Every Apes worst nightmare.
Personally, I'd rather they just take a
needle and suck the bubble out and
replace it with more adhesive. But
that's just me. Hit it with novocain
while you're there in case you stick me.

why ask what people think if you're not going to (possibly) agree with them or

Exactly what I was
thinking, why go with Caesar? It's not as if that is the character fans dress up
as and go to conventions etc. as is it? There are Apes characters more
recognisable to the general public which would have made much more sense to use
if there wasn't an ulterior motive.
Even Apemania
don't use a Caesar character do they?

Why did they use
CAESAR’s head, not a more RECOGNISABLE ape?

I can’t imagine it would cost any

I think we can actually rule out the cost
as an issue because it couldn’t cost any more to do a standard gorilla
(surely Ursus/Urko with helmet would cost more) or Zaius and they would be more
recognizable or even Cornelius…how would he cost more?

The HEAD collection is the choice of ONE ape. Now logically, it should be
the most recognizable, or one that sells most copies. It’s
NEITHER. That’s peculiar.

story... I like the fact that you have the fugitives doing things a bit more
"realistically" under their circumstances... In other words, while I'm sure
normally Virdon, and Galen especially, would want to "talk it out" they did take
an action which would maybe be better in their sitaution... The same way it
would have been better on the TV show if they actually kicked humans asses
rather than K.O.ing an armed Gorilla! That's something I don't like: They could
beat the crap out of a Gorilla who could have pulled the trigger before they
even took a swing, but they couldn't manage to escape from humans armed with
machettes (even though the astronauts could have at least grabbed a stick to
ward off any attempted slashings)...

But no because these two are supposed to be clever because they are

So timesthat by the fact they carry rifles , does it make sence to

I have to agree again.
It never occured to me when I was a kid watching them - I was just so happy something else POTA was on!
But now it's all a bit "yell at the TV!".
Apologies to TV Show fans who disagree! xoxo

*** Agreed, I would have much preferred if the astronauts had some
type of (crude) weapon and or sneal attack tactics when taking on a
gorilla... At least in ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW, they are armed with a club when
they first go to resue Galen, and in THE GLADIATORS, when they go to attack the
night guard watching the horses, they take a rock with them for head bashing...
But their escape from the garrison in UP ABOVE THE WORLD... what a bunch of
crap!
