Very cool, Wayne .  I love the green background on the t-shirts, and the artwork is fantastic.

This is my t-shirt of General Ursus.  Haven't worn it yet.  Waiting for a nice hot day where I won't have to wear a sweater so I could show him off.

I paid this artist to airbrush it for me.  I think it cost $45-$50.  Can't remember. I bleed money left and right chasing my ape dreams.

Very cool, Wayne.  I love the green background on the t-shirts, and the artwork is fantastic.

This is my t-shirt of General Ursus.  Haven't worn it yet.  Waiting for a nice hot day where I won't have to wear a sweater so I could show him off.

So there ARE out-takes from the TV series! You say you got it in
China? Are you aware of other out-take clips? I'm sure we'd all love
to see that if you were willing to share it, as far as I know no out-
takes have turned up before despite rumours about them.

This film directed by Ted Post will be playing at the Egyptian Theatre in LA on Feb. 13th....sounds like a big change from Beneath!!

THE BABY, 1973, 84 min. Dir. Ted Post (MAGNUM FORCE, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES). You can't get more cult than this original and odd film. The Wadsworths are a typical ordinary family: a strong-willed matriarchal mother (Ruth Roman, of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN), two lust-fueled daughters and a bouncing baby boy. Except the baby (David Mooney) is going on 30 years old, sits in a crib, wears diapers and sucks a bottle. When the family's new social worker (Anjanette Comer, of THE LOVED ONE) arrives, she takes notice of the baby and decides to do something about this dysfunctional household. The 1970s-era brightly colored sets evoke a "Brady Bunch" suburbia, but one that is slightly off-balance. The decaying Victorian Wadsworth mansion, a cross between something out of WILLARD and "The Munsters," adds to the neglected aura of the family relations. Cinematographer Michael Margulies uses skewed camera angles bolster the unsettling nature of this film, and
Gerald Fried's score creates an eerie atmosphere. Mooney is excellent as "Baby." One of the few films to present the subject of ABs (adult babies), Fetish Film Night's presentation is an experience that won't be replicated at your local multiplex and is essential for fans of fetish cinema. "…deliciously insane…the definition of cult, completely avoiding mainstream appeal and totally original." – Jason Cook, The Spinning Image

PLANET OF THE APES). You can’t get more cult than this original and
odd film. The Wadsworths are a typical ordinary family: a strong-
willed matriarchal mother (Ruth Roman, of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN), two
lust-fueled daughters and a bouncing baby boy. Except the baby (David
Mooney) is going on 30 years old, sits in a crib, wears diapers and
sucks a bottle. When the family’s new social worker (Anjanette
Comer, of THE LOVED ONE) arrives, she takes notice of the baby and
decides to do something about this dysfunctional household. The 1970s-
era brightly colored sets evoke a "Brady Bunch" suburbia, but one
that is slightly off-balance. The decaying Victorian Wadsworth
mansion, a cross between something out of WILLARD and "The Munsters,"
adds to the neglected aura of the family relations. Cinematographer
Michael Margulies uses skewed camera angles bolster the unsettling
            nature of this film, and
            > Gerald Fried's score creates an eerie atmosphere. Mooney is
excellent as "Baby." One of the few films to present the subject of
ABs (adult babies), Fetish Film Night’s presentation is an
experience that won't be replicated at your local multiplex and is
essential for fans of fetish cinema. "…deliciously insane…the

              Obviously they do!

It would be very interesting if they had shown the original lately and we had viewing figures for that to compare.

Good question , even though the originals are better in my opinion
the younger generation's don't often like watching older movies (
they dont even give them a chance ) one of our member's mentioned
that they don't like modern special effects ( CGI ) but thats what
              the young ones like.
If its not action / bloody / sexy / funny they dont want to have
anything to do with it ( box office is proof of that) even some of
the classics like 007 James Bond / Shrek / Roger Rabbit / Newest Star
Wars / Starship troopers / Deep Blue but to mention a few.
And yes in general i think they are good entertainment.
Which leads me on to the Burton P.O.T.A's film it has got
              entertainment value .

The artist I hired could probably be commissioned to reproduce the designs based on the photograph references that Wayne posted of his wonderful t-shirts with the green backgrounds.

Wayne, do you wear those t-shirts?

I've been enjoying watching the 'John Adams' series they've been
showing on Channel 4 (UK) with Paul Giamatti. It was on an hour or
two before Burton's POTA, but it's probably only me that thought
there was a connection (cos he was in both) - I doubt they put that
much thought into it! He's a good actor though.

I think it was me made the comment about CGI stuff - I don't object
to it altogether, I think it can be brilliant if used 'tastefully'.
But I often get the feeling that effects are being thrown in to show
off, or a story is built around some great new effect someone has
come up with. Assuming that special effects will continue to improve
over the years, future audiences will look at todays stuff and
go "well, the effects are dated but the plot is just rubbish", which
could never be said about the original POTA, whatever people might
think about the make-up. I thought the make-up in Burton's POTA was
excellent, mostly, but there's nothing classic or timeless about the
story, even Fox seems to think that now or they would have shoe-
horned it into the blu-ray collection (yeah, I know it got a separate
                  release).

I wasn,t having a dig at you when i mentioned about CGI, and i agree
if used properly with a good storyline it can be a good film.
Like war of the worlds the special effects helps up-date a classic
film but sorry the storyline was full of holes if i remember rightly,
however it can't beat the original jeff waines classic storyline by
                  music fantastic.
And yes the make-up in Burton's P.O.T.A's was fantastic , they can
talk normally without having to over extend there jaw for movement.
The only problem with anyone trying to do a remake of any classic
film is many fans are going to compare it , sometimes unfairly
because some remakes are better than the originals.
I cant think of one at present but there are some

Exactly right, especially when the remake is of an acknowledged
classic, as it almost always is, there's no way it can compare well,
no matter how good it is. Wouldn't be more worthwhile to remake a
badly-made film with a good plot? Well, yes, but todays studios don't
think beyond 'it made money before, surely we can wring some more
                  money out of the name'.

And yes, War of the Worlds is a good example. The subtlety of H G
Wells' story was that the only thing that could defeat the aliens was
a human virus, completely beyond the control of humanity. But, no,
Tom bloody Cruise discovers he can blow them up with hand-grenades!
God forbid he should be in a film without it's quota of explosions.
But speaking of which, I see that Jeff Wayne's musical is playing
here in Dublin in July, I might well go see it.

Great photos! I love seeing this behind-the-scenes stuff. Also some of
the pictures from James last week were nice too - i liked the shot of
the gorillas and humans playing cards together.
                  Thanks Hunter & contributers!

Very cool. I totally loved John Adams. That was a great HBO mini series.
Also did great at the Golden Globes. Paul got one as well.

That's cool. Wow Tim, you've been in a lot of stuff! I think 'Going to
California' was brilliant, one of the best series I've seen. It was
only shown here very late at night, so it's criminally overlooked.

                  Great updates, Hunter.
I have yet to post all the stuff Rich send me but hopefully I can begin this weekend.
I've been caught up with scificountdown these last few days. Especially T4 with it's release date no more than 3 months from now.

But potacollective updates will be coming soon.

Well, it was a great series. Funny in an intelligent way, sometimes
poignant. Very smart. Guess I won't hold my breath for a second
                  series though.

Greetings everyone.  I am patiently waiting for all of my orders to come in, and am busy doing mental gymnastics, trying to figure out how to successfully augment to the hairpieces I ordered for Zira's costume. At least I can start augmenting to the hair pieces, which may be a lot of work but well worth it in the end.  My plan for this weekend is to complete the hair augmentation to the hairpieces I already have in-house, and to start assembling all of the materials and bits to the costume in one general area of my bedroom.

That's when CGI is done right: when it's unobtrusive, and you never
even know it (aside from wondering, "How could they have gotten that
                  shot?").

These people do know who he was and some of the stuff he did don't they? Probably not. I guess most of those 'teenagers' (and the rest) who wear those 'trendy tshirts also don't really know who they have on their chests?
Plus it's not really that 'clever' as the merged Che/Ape thing has been done for years.

The thing is it's everywhere now and a lot of the time you just don't notice or realise it. I just watched 'Slumdog Millionaire' and was going to say what a great film with no CGI etc.
Then I thought about it and there probably was, I bet a lot of the people in crowd scenes etc. were done on a computer as the days of films having thousands of extras are long gone.

It got a separate release on BR because it falls into the category of “if we release it NOW, while the range is limited to 20 movies, we might sell one or two!”.

BR in AUS is still really crapola in range and we still don’t have an Aussie BR release of anything but Burton .

So true. And one of the best at doing that was James Cameron with TITANIC.

That's when CGI is done right: when it's unobtrusive, and you never

Yes your probably spot on there , its very hard to tell where
                  cgi is and isn't used.
Even car stunts , war scenes, underwater plus much more.
I find it most refreshing when a studio / Director brings something
to the screen that hasn't been done before or rehashed .
Good example ( Mummy /Dracula/Superman/Freedy Krugger/ Friday the
13th just to mention a few however P.O.T.A's followed the same line
by making five film, T.V series and cartoon series , but in its
defence at least it was over a short time span in terms of Hollywood
films and it was new and exciting at the time never had ape masks
                  looked like that.
Personally way ahead of its time, even though it didn't follow the
                  book completely.
The twist at the end of first movie blew my mind the first time i saw
it and chills went down my spine when that bloody doll speaks (
                  chilling )

THREE OF A KIND;Virdon and burke manage to get the computerised disc working...and bid farewell to galen...whom returns under cover of darkness, to his mother's new home...now widowed, galen decides to give himself up, and plead with zaius and ask for forgiveness for his foolishness;i.e;"giving you the runaround sir" he mutters!...to which zaius snaps.."me...and the high council...!",Galen offers his handshake...and tells zaius that he would like to spend his time, helping to look after his ailing mother, and never reveal what interesting things he learned from his two astronaut friends...to which Zaius reluctantly agrees...but only after a written oath of silence, besides,...knowing urko is stripped of his status...life on the planet of the apes could remain calm..."we are three of a kind son" replies Ann;galen's mother.".I know humans have good qualities, you certainly know from your two friends now gone...and zaius???...he always knew, but our sworn secrecy must remain!...an ape's promise is a promise, son!"
Galen hugs his mother in the presence of zauis, who nods his approval...!FADE.....!

No – it’s the funny, intelligent, sometimes poignant ones that struggle….

It has been done for years, hasn't it? Is this guy taking credit for
someone else's idea? It's for a good cause of course, and this is the
year of the gorilla, to highlight their near-extinction.

BTW, that Che image was made by a very talented Irish artist called
Jim Fitzpatrick after, unlikely as it seems, bumping into Che in a
pub in rural Ireland. On the upside, he just gave all future
copyright proceeds to a children's hospital in Cuba.

That reminds me - I had a brilliant idea about that over Christmas!
Well I thought it was brilliant. Those 'astronauts from ten years ago' -
Chris Virdon and colleagues! Obsessed with finding his missing father,
he goes on a mission/steals a ship and winds up ten years earlier than
his father (think Brent in 'Return POTA'). They're all killed before
Urko or Zaius get a name they might recognise ten years later, but
their ship remains safely hidden. (The hand grenades from Ep 1 might
belong to one of them too). The significance of that photo Virdon keeps
with him? - he exhumes the shallow grave of the dead astronauts and
finds a tattered copy of the same photo/flight suit saying 'C Virdon' -
                      he's found his son.
And call me sadistic, but I'd also like to think they don't get home,
otherwise they would change history. Instead they're thrown even
further forward (perhaps to Taylor/Brent's time, just in time for the
bomb! maybe this is the ship Milo then discovers?).

Feel free to use that brilliant idea Wayne!

Michael and I had a plot sort of like that lined up for future issues of the 'Going Home' comic story.
We had the 'missing presumed dead' Alan Virdon, in a coma, being cared for in some high tech facility by a bunch of people in ANSA astronaut suits. The leader was going to be revealed as Chris Virdon who had followed his father into the space programme to try to find his dad and had also ended up on the Planet of the Apes.

I even drew up a full page that has a sort of dream sequence with Virdon thinking he was back on Earth with his wife and son, who then ages before his eyes and Virdon suddenly wakes and we are introduced to the adult Chris Virdon. We eventually scrapped that page, deciding it would just confuse things so we were going to use it in a later issue of the story.

I'll upload a copy of the unused page to the files section. It has no text or anything, just the raw pencils.

Booth Colman's in that too. I don't think we got much in the way of POTA comments from Whitmore.
