I like the idea of reproductions of the 70's fanclub merchandise - it would really appeal to the 40-something original generation of POTA fan you were talking about. But would the
fanclub be taken seriously then? Would you be offering flared trousers with rubbish-looking Galen knee patches sewn on? Cos if you are, count me in!

On the contrary.... I DO NOT comment on the arguments,
political discussions or petty disagreements as I get very tired of those and
ignore them. I do comment on most POTA related stuff. If I don't it's cause I'm
busy or I've said "Great job Neil" for the zillinoth time!

It's a fact and it has happened sice we were all on
the POTA group - whenever the "discussion" gets heated and personal,
everyone feels they have to contribute something and the ON subject posts get
lost in the mud.
AND then it goes VERY quiet for a while.

I like the idea of reproductions of the 70's fanclub
merchandise - it would really appeal to the 40-something original generation of
POTA fan you were talking about. But would the fanclub be taken seriously then?
Would you be offering flared trousers with rubbish-looking Galen knee patches

I felt the same way. It was the same with the series. More & more humans & less & less apes. I don't need a Heston in every minor costume change, but I'd buy multible Gorillas with
different facial expressions & accesories. And even though the heads would be the only real difference in half the ape characters, I would want them all.
I have only ordered the Hot Toyz Ursus because the cost factor is too great right now. If they had offered more ape characters for the normal 12 inch price my comics dealer would be getting quite a box from Diamond just
for me.
I couldn't be happier buying the MEGO replica figures for $18 in a re-sealable package. The nostalgia factor is there plus I can get copies for my son to play with or to build up my Mego army. Which (as sad as it
sounds) is pretty fun to set up with my treehouse, etc. They got it right & I really hope that now that Marty Abrams has re-acquired MEGO that some really exciting things are to come.

Are you kidding me? As a proud member of the 70's KISS ARMY I think the name is perfect plus it ties into the Apes world perfectly. You could have different ranks for people who
contribute more etc. etc. just like the KISS army. Brillant.

If you do one you should keep it "old school". The older fan base would love the nostalgic factor & newer fans would love to get that feeling like it was way back when. An Iron-On
transfer designed by Neil, a paper publication more in line with the "Apes-Fan" books that were not just copies of lists typed up by a fan. You know, REAL illustrations, photos, maybe reviews of not just newer
items availible but of collector items, giving reasons why everyone should have "this" but could wait to find "that". Maybe pins or an exclusive poster. Between you & Neil I think you could design
just about anything & make it worth signing up for. I really like the idea.

haven't tried to get him going either as I'd rather he discover it by
himself. I do think that he needs to be a bit older to watch POTA and
really appreciate it.
I know that most of us here were fascinated by apes when we were kids,
but that was because we were a more captive audience for the TV
commercials of the time, and there was not much more for us to latch
onto. I think the 'we' are the few that learned to appreciate POTA for
the other reasons after we got in our kiddie kicks. For many of our
peers when we were kids, POTA was just a phase. It had a bit more of
an impact on some kids, but the majority just enjoyed the odd film
here and there.
Regarding Michael's proposed fan club, I would fully support it if
people think that a worthy publication can be put together on a
regular basis. I'm just skeptical that more can be done than what is
being produced by SS as it is. Some people are already critical of SS
content being a bit too far from the subject matter. But we all know
that the SS guys put great effort into getting what little new 'behind
the scenes' information available.
I hope I'm not coming off as being too negative. I don't mean to. I
just try to be more realistic.

Back To The Planet Of The Apes
March 16, 2009 10:49 AM
Darren Stockford,

Science-fiction franchises rarely die. The eyes might close
but the heart continues to beat, even if only a core collective of fans can
hear it. The fact that Planet Of The Apes' ticker is still pumping, despite the
life-threatening surgery it underwent in 2001, is testament to the series' resilience.
Though a success in financial terms, Tim Burton's film paled in comparison to
its 1968 forefather, lacking its well-defined story, strong characters,
thought-provoking subtext and, well, let's be honest, plain old charm.
Of course, fans of the original Apes movies (those that were
disappointed in 2001, anyway) were always going to forget, if not quite
forgive, Burton 's
effort. But Hollywood ?
Had the critical chirping over the 2001 film - especially its confusing ending
- halted the wagon train? Or would the realisation hit that the movie had
simply strayed too far from the source? The answers, it seems, are in Caesar,
the seventh Planet Of The Apes film, mooted for release by Fox in 2011 -
providing it makes it into production (at the moment, it's awaiting a green
light).
Developed under the title Planet Of The Apes: Genesis, then
Genesis: Apes, the new movie is being crafted by writer/director Scott Frank,
whose scripting credits include Get Shorty and, more to the point, Steven
Spielberg's Minority Report. The story - reportedly driven by an idea that's
not too far from current genetic research, lending it a hard sci-fi flavour -
details the rise of a super-intelligent chimpanzee who eventually rallies his
species against mankind.
If that sounds familiar, it's not surprising. In its brief
synopsis, it appears to be the same tale told by Conquest Of The Planet Of The
Apes, the fourth film in the original series and the source of the name Caesar
(Roman emperors notwithstanding). However, in an interview with chud.com last
December, Scott Frank was adamant that his film will be no remake - and, more
surprisingly, that there'll be no talking apes nor actors in simian make-up.
Instead, the titular character will be brought to life by photo-real (at least
that's the plan) CGI and will communicate with facial gestures and sign
language.
If such revelations have you groaning into your Planet Of
The Apes Ultimate Collector's Edition (a 14-DVD set that comes complete with a
hairy, life-sized bust of Roddy McDowall as the original Caesar), take heart in
the fact that there are probably still some corners of the classic Apes
universe that you haven't explored, such as the 250+ comic books, the audio
adventures, the video game (released in 2001 but completely Burton-free) and
various film and TV novelisations.
The expanded 'verse is deep and wide - so much so that its
characters and events are able to fill a weighty 303-page book titled Timeline
Of The Planet Of The Apes, which was published recently by Hasslein Books.
Controversially, its author, Rich Handley, weaves in events from Tim Burton's
movie and its spin-off publications, so for some the soil might be tainted (if
it wasn't already by the 1991 Alien Nation crossover and other bits of
comic-book craziness). But as an exercise in glorious obsession, it's a noble
tome. As a guide to what's out there, it's thorough.
Providing that Scott Frank's story gets the go-ahead to be
turned into a film, one assumes that Handley will eventually add it to his
timeline, even if it requires some cunningly lateral thinking. After all, the
rule is: if it's released by Fox, it's official.
At the moment, many fans, including this one, are hopeful
but cautious when it comes to a new Planet Of The Apes movie. We've had the
reimagining, and it wasn't as good as we'd imagined. Now we're awaiting the
reboot, and we're hoping that it doesn't crash. Though the original films are
likely to remain at the centre of the Apes universe, it would certainly feel
good to hail Caesar in 2011*. Fictionally speaking, of course.
* A little bit of
mathematical intrigue: if you take 2011 away from 3979 (the year that,
according to Timeline Of The Planet Of The Apes, the Alpha-Omega bomb
detonates, devastating the Earth), you're left with 1968 - the year the
original film was released. Good omen or bad omen?

Here's the story behind the Mego costume for sale on ebay... it's from Scott Bosco
|
As a kid I had contacted Mego about their POTA line just for info as what they would be coming out with. I had built my own mini-ape city and costumes for the action figures and they
were interested to see. They sent one of their disigners over to my home to take photos of what I made. One of the building I made not from the films or TV series was kinda used though changed. The invited me to the NY Toy Fair and told me to bring an extra pair of pants and shirt for sizing - from
it they made me the ape costume. The mask is a regular adult size. I haven't posted any of the ads here. I posted mine at the MegoMuseum.
Here is the link with pics. - Scott B.

I think Michael meant his first KISS show was 1980. KISS didn't tour
Australia until 1980, and Eric Carr had replaced Peter Criss by then
(Eric replaced Peter after the 1979 North American "Dynasty" tour).
And the tourbooks didn't feature Peter with retouched makeup---they

Not sure I agree they are all pictures of
Eric. If they are – they are BADly touched up.
You can see where they have touched up the
photos.
Is there another reason they would have
done so?

Ah, he's a hippie. He can't help it. KISS was always about money. Hippies are afraid of money. ;) Seriously though, I understamd not wanting to duplicate anything besides the name.
Gene Simmons would probably sue you anyways.

Besides I'm pretty
sure 'Ape army' was mentioned in at least one of the movies way before Kiss
even had enough fans to have an 'army' of their own.

Over the past three weeks we know that some of you have experienced a few
hiccups while using Yahoo! Groups. For this, we're sorry– we're in the process
of moving to new data centers, a move which should enable us to deliver faster
page loads, a more stable system, and an all-around better user
experience.
Currently, about 75% of Yahoo! Groups have been moved over to
the new data centers and the remaining 25% of groups will be moved over in
phases between now and March 31st.
As is the case with any move, however,
issues sometimes arise, which in this case have resulted in temporary delays or
bugs. As a result of this, some of you may be experiencing a temporary issue
accessing your files and we're working to resolve that now. We're sorry about
any inconvenience caused by these problems; and we appreciate your patience, as
we work through these issues in an effort to improve your experience on Yahoo!
Groups.

I'm trying to put together a list of music that references POTA. Here's what I've got so far, there's a few more to be added:
http://planetoftheapes.wikia.com/wiki/Music_Of_The_Planet_Of_The_Apes#Music_Of_The_Apes
Anyone got anything to add to it? Even if it's yet another punk or metal song called 'Planet of the Apes', I'll include it for the sake of completeness, but I'm interested in any more 70's cash-in
records. (Also if anyone has any songs or pictures of record covers from 70's stuff then pass them this way!) Thanks! <.html

useful, even if it's in 10 years time, then it's been worthwhile. And the basis of most of my information is from studying the archives of this group and the other group (who's message archives are open to
non-members) because there's a lot of really valuable info been shared over the years. Give yourselves a pat on the back!
(but it's not my site, I'm just the most active contributer at the moment - if/when Caesar comes out the site could really take off)

They are from a
hardback book that came out back when the movie was released. I've been
scanning a few things lately and when I get more of these 'cleaned up' I
will upload them to the files section.
I know it is for
the Burton movie but the artwork is fantastic and shouldn't be tarred with the
same brush as the movie. The Rick Baker paintings for example are just
brilliant.

I was curious about this and contacted the seller. Apparently, it's a preliminary splash page that was intended to run in the UK weekly version of "Kingdom on an Island of
Apes," and is being sold by someone who used to work at Marvel UK when the POTA series was still in print. He says he has another page as well and is going to scan it for me. I'll pass it along once I have
the scan. Apparently, the page to be scanned was illustrated by Ken Barr, and was intended for use in POTA Weekly #16.

Hi Rich,
Just to clarify I take it the seller worked in New York for Marvel's British Dept'
At the time Most , if not all of the work on the UK weeklies was done in house at Marvel US, it was only latter that Marvel UK was set up as a separate entity (Some time in `78 I believe)

It's been announced that the cult Saturday
morning show from 1976, "Monster Squad", is coming to DVD. Buck Kartalian played
the wolfman character (that's kind of like an ape). Buck of course played Julius
in "Planet" and Frank in "Conquest" (though you wouldn't know it from the
Blu-ray extras). He's rather proud of "Monster Squad" and it's one of the things
fans thank him for. Anyway, for those of you who know what I'm talking about,
it's coming soon.
This is the most exciting news since, well,

Over the past week we know that some of you have experienced problems with
your groups (both on the web and with email delivery). These issues were/are the
result of a recent data center move, which we blogged about on the 19th. (Read
that post here: http://www.ygroupsb log.com/blog/ 2009/03/19/ even-groups- gets-the- hiccups/)
As
part of this move, we had also upgraded to higher performance hardware, but the
upgrade didn't work out as planned. The team has been working to resolve these
issues and stabilize your experience, and we're cautiously optimistic that we'll
have Yahoo! Groups back to normal before the weekend.
That said, we'll
definitely still be monitoring the system closely, and we encourage you to keep
checking the Yahoo! Groups blog (http://www.ygroupsb log.com) for the
latest updates if you experience further problems.
In addition, we've
definitely learned some things from this incident (and from the feedback folks
have been sharing about how we could better communicate) , and we'll blog
about the specific steps we're planning to take in the area of better
communication around system issues next week.
We know-I know -that this
past week or so has been rough, and we apologize for all the inconvenience the
problems have caused you and your groups. We can and will do better in the
future.

.htmlWayne it's a relatively simple process.
On the Group's main page click on the 'Photos' or 'Files' link on the left of the page then go to the folder that you want to put the photo / picture in (or create your own folder).
Near the top you will see a link that says: Add Photo / File. Click on it and this will then take you to the upload page.
Browse to where the picture is stored on your computer, click on it and then click on 'open'. You can then if you want to, give a name to the picture (type it in the box directly under titled Name:) or just
leave it and it will automatically use the name you already have it saved as.
To let the group know that something has been uploaded tick the 'Send a message to the group announcing this file'.
Finally just click on the 'upload' button near the bottom and the pictures will be put into the folder you chose.
Hope this helps,
Neil
