First I'd like you to set up a meeting with JJ Abrahams.
He's now my top pick to revive apes.
Get Terry Gilliam to do the story boards, and contribute to the plot.
I guess we need some Aussie bimbo (Nicole or Naomi) and the guy who is Batman and John Connor (Bale). Get acting lessons for those 3 - no need to teach them how to walk like apes (we'll get Liberache to teach Bale
and you and I can give lessons to the ladies).
Neil - could you please get on with a comic and some posters?

The Day the Earth Stood Still is not a franchise. It's a one-off remake and it looks like Fox didn't bother looking for a good writer and instead focussed on getting a great looking
ad.
That's the wise business approach to a one-off remake like this and if it makes the hoardes go get the original on Blu Ray then even better!
The key to a huge merchandising success for Fox lies in POTA and they know it. They are on record saying they know they did not make enough money on the last one and they seem to know why and they seem to be looking for
a great INTELLIGENT sci-fi writer (Scott Frank). So Fox does right now seem to be going through the motions of an entity that did learn a lesson.
The Day the Earth Stood Still deserves NO comparison.

If I was a person with a big bushy beard and I wanted to attempt to take a cast of my face for the purpose of trying to make some appliances, should I do it at a time when I might be clean-shaven? And would I be able

Well...If you cast when you're shaven, the
prosthetic wont fit when your beard grows back. The best way to cast IS
clean shaven. It can be done with a beard, but it's much more difficult
getting it off. And, the sculpt will be that much bigger. The
appliance will have to be glued to the beard and mustache. This means LESS
movement in the appliance 'cuz it wont be applied to your skin.

Any updates or news on what was found here Dario
?
Fellow facebook'er Graham found a facebook
group dedicated to LUG. LUG was the publisher that put out the Apes mags
in France. The one with all those weird covers. The group members are
all french (with the exception of Graham) but I'm fully biligual so when I
have a few minutes I'm going to craft a query to put to the group members
there to see if I can gleem more info on how the POTA issues came to have
such odd covers. If I get anything new I'll be posting here. I wouldn't
get too excited right away as there was a lot of other titles the
publisher put out including a lot of other Marvel licensed variants. The
group may just be a bunch of people who were more into the other titles or
just a group that enjoyed the mags without know more about the historical
aspects. But the group discription provided a pretty decent summary of
the company itself so perhaps there is an old 'insider'
connection.
Wish me luck
Dario

Shave. That's the only advice I have.
Unless you can incorporate the beard
into the makeup. Remember they wax
the eyebrows so that they aren't taken
off with the appliance like a bikini wax.
You can't glue to a beard, not well anyway.
I imagine John Huston probably shaved too.

Thanks guys, that all makes sense. So the way to go is: shave, cast, make appliances, then shave again if/when I'm wearing them.
I have a vague memory of that video from Jeff K of Eric Greene being made up at a convention - didn't he have a beard at the time? I might be confusing him with the messiah. ;)
-------------------------------
Well...If you cast when you're shaven, the prosthetic wont fit when your beard grows back. The best way to cast IS clean shaven. It can be done with a beard, but it's much more difficult getting it off. And,
the sculpt will be that much bigger. The appliance will have to be glued to the beard and mustache. This means LESS movement in the appliance 'cuz it wont be applied to your skin.

This will be the last post regarding the "troubles" of Ireland, and it is a quote from Eric Greene's book "PLANET OF THE APES as American Myth":
"The meanings of a symbol or image may also change due to the location of the audience. A symbol in an APES film might have particular possible meanings in the United States and very different ones in, for instance,
Mexico or Egypt. For example, a British publication noted that the APES series "was laced with racial overtones, easily linked to the civil rights movement in America, Vietnam and Northern Ireland." While U.S.
audiences and critics noted the connections to Vietnam and to U.S. race relations, the comparison to Northern Ireland would have been unlikely from someone who was not from the United Kingdom or who was not for some
other reason particularly knowledgeable about Ireland."
According to Greene, this British publication was "From Book--Film--T.V." in PLANET OF THE APES POSTERBOOK (London: Top Sellers, 1974), p. 1. [note 43 from Greene's introduction, where the above paragraph
is quoted from].
If that 1974 book is not in PDF format at Hunter's site yet, perhaps it will eventually find its way there.
For those of you monkeys who think that POTA isn't relevant to the issues relating to Northern Ireland, well, chew on THAT. Eric Greene didn't come up with this "wild ass" interpretation -- for those of
you Greene-haters out there. He quoted from a publication that came out the same year that the POTA tv show aired.
By that time, CONQUEST had already been in theaters. And the plot of CONQUEST had all to do with oppressed peoples using VIOLENCE to achieve their goal. Clearly, we in the audience were meant to sympathize with the
enslaved Apes... to root FOR them and to boo the Humans who oppress them. The ending of the film, though, was just as cautionary, for Caesar's (and the Apes') actions go too far, according to MacDonald:
"Caesar, this is not how it was meant to be!"
"In your view, or mine?"
"Violence prolongs hate. Hate prolongs violence. By what RIGHT are you spilling this blood?"
"By the SLAVE'S RIGHT to PUNISH HIS PERSECUTORS."
[my emphasis]
The pendulum swings from one extreme to the other. An apropos exposition for what COULD possibly happen IF groups like the I.R.A. were to "turn the tables" on their foes. As I said in my initial post regarding
this subject, I DO NOT APPROVE of their terrorist tactics, but I do UNDERSTAND why they do them. They feel justified, even if we who aren't in the thick of it over there are appalled by it.
My main point, though, was that there wouldn't even BE an I.R.A. if the English had not felt entitled to conquer Ireland way back when. The Irish are a proud people -- an often pugnatious people. Read the stories
about the epic fighters from Irish myth and get a sense of their historical aversion to being dominated by any foreign power. They were an oasis of civilization during the Dark Ages, when the power of Rome didn't
have the wherewithal to impose their will on them, Ireland being just about as far away from the rest of the known world as you could get.
It is believed by some that the Coronation Chair that has been used by British monarchs for centuries holds underneath the Seat -- or, it did, until recently -- the fabled "Stone of Scone". Some believe that
this very stone was brought to Ireland by Jeremiah when he supposedly transplanted the Davidic line (in the form of a princess named Tamar, who became known as Tea Tephi in Ireland) from Judea to Ireland, that this
stone was the same stone which Jacob rested his head on when he dreamed about the Ladder of Heaven.
According to legend, this stone was later transplanted from Tara in Ireland to a place in Scotland (called Scone, pronounced "skoon"), from whence it was eventually STOLEN by the British, who put this sacred
relic into the very chair that all subsequent British monarchs are crowned on.
Are any of these legends true? Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. I do know, however, that there are those who feel that their heritage has been raped, and they are understandably irked by it.
The Stone of Scone is currently housed in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland; the Brits agreed to "return" it to the place they'd stolen it from... although the next time a monarch needs to be crowned, they have
an agreement that the rock will be shipped to London and re-joined to the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey, for the ceremony.
According to legend, the kings of Ireland were crowned in the presence of this 'sacred' rock long before any English king, or Scottish king, for that matter.
If, somehow, a couple centuries from now, an Islamic global jihad against the West were to result in the 'humbling' of America (which they call "the Great Satan"), and if they were to take the original
manuscript of the Declaration of Independence and showcase it in a Museum of American Godless Evil... I wonder how the oppressed American people would feel about that. About having their own culture raped before them by
people who despise the ideals that mean so much to guys like me. People who prefer horrific Sharia Law over the principles enshrined in the Declaration.
If such a jihad were to overthrow the U.S.A., and if I were forced to be a virtual slave in such a domineering theocratic dictatorship, would I just "take it" and live in "peace" -- in peaceful
subjugation? Or would I do whatever it might take -- even if it is considered "terrorism" -- to restore freedom to a country I live in?
Would I react like Caesar -- shedding blood as per "the slave's right to punish his persecutors" -- or would I try for non-violent resistance?
The Irish people struggle with this very dilemma, and some choose the path of violence. I deplore that. But I understand it. I don't excuse it, but neither do I excuse those who have PUSHED them to retaliate. Theirs
is a RE-ACTION. All those who express indignation at their reactions should be "fair and balanced" and express equal outrage at the ACTIONS that have prompted the terroristic response.
There's plenty of blame to go around.

away. In Northern Ireland there are a million people violently opposed to being ruled by what they see as (and what, in fairness, WAS until about 15 years ago) a very Roman Catholic-oriented government. Any sudden
reunification of Ireland would provoke an uprising by them at least as bad as 'the Troubles' of the last 40 years, no question. As to whether or not these people would be justified in their actions, I can't
honestly say. They're people who's ancestors have lived in Ireland for about 300 to 400 years (nearly as long as white people in North America?). The reasons their ancestors arrived can't be justified by
today's standards, and neither can the English conquest of other countries, but these are the circumstances our generation have inherited from our forefathers. And perhaps the will of the majority in all-Ireland
should have outweighed the fears of the anti-independence minority? Perhaps, but again this is the situation we've inherited from the bad decisions made centuries ago. There's no quick fix to the problems in
Northern Ireland. The end result of the IRA's 30-year 'war' - regional self-government - is roughly the same as what Scotland and Wales have achieved without 3000 deaths, through the democratic process.
I'm an Irish person who's English surname and protestant upbringing show my English/colonist ancestry, but who, living in the Republic, had Irish nationalist instincts until turned off narrow, tribal patriotism
by what it was being used to justify in the North. I can't see how bit makes much difference at all, whether the people there pay their taxes to a smug British government or to a corrupt Irish government, the
standard of living is much the same these days. The mail-boxes might be painted a different colour but the grass is still green, it's all just superficial differances really and not worth another life being wasted.
>
> Like I said Patrick, I do agree with much of your arguement about individuals needing to take responsability for their own deeds and misdeeds, but Northern Ireland is a bad example for you to use to support your
arguement, just as I shouldn't claim to know everything about US gun-control laws because I saw a Michael Moore film.

.htmlYeah....or rewrite GOING HOME with the locations I originally intended!
I was reading that recently and I think I've been a bit hard on myself. It could do with a re-touch and relocation. We could beg Dave to turn MONUMENT into a 15 pager (which we incorporate over the trilogy as a 3
part additional story) and get the lads to Texas without sacrificing much at all...
I reckon that's the go. Those POMS still love their TV Show and they needs a comic they do!

Oh yeah and I was thinking (wondering) maybe it would be possible to cut and paste WITHIN into a non-strip format too.
I was re-reading that too and it's too good to leave as a strip I reckon.
In srtip format it would be looking to be published in a newspaper or magazine whick is way less likely I think than as a comic. I'd have to sit down with you and a bottle of bourbon or 2 and rewrite the corny
"revelation" panels....
Anyway all the time we do that we are going over things we have already done so I still favour the TV show stuff....

As soon as we establish this, Neil and I will reveal the fully coloured, re-written Planet of the Apes BEGINS (17 pages). Many thanks to Rich Handley, Greg P, Graham Hill, John Z Davis, Moxy and Cougar for their

I hope it's not too much to ask you to respond to this.

If you can actually post to the group at the time I can wee what time it is by my computer (hoping YAHOO! delivers at the right time) and use that to convert.

It is 8pm mountain time right now where I
am
I presume you are about 14 hours later than I
am
If you want to hit most people in the USA it
propably needs to be in approx 1-2 hours from now
So Terry is that now?
If you can actually post to the group at the

That's cool. If enough people respond we can just give a time when a few people are around and others might gravitate towards it...

OK I know that not everybody is a late night
person
but i think many people on here are
USA/Canada has about a 3 hour time period from west
to east
I am basically in the middle time zone so everyone
is usually 1 hour before or 1 hour after me more or less
So I think Michael is 16 hours later than
me
SO presumably schedule will work like this more or
less
Los Angeles CA west USA 9:00
pm
Saskatoon SK Canada is same as Montana
USA 10:00 pm 1 hour later than Los
Angeles
Detroit MI to New York east USA 12:00 am
midnight 3 hours later than Los
Angeles
London England 5:00 am (next
day) 8 hours later than
Los Angeles
Perth Australia 12:00
pm (next day) 15 hours later than
Los Angeles
Sydney Australia 2:00 pm (next
day) 17 hours later than Los
Angeles
This general schedule shows us thats its fairly
good for USA/Canada to talk late evenings to Australia in the next early
afternoons
England/Europe will all be sleeping during this
time
My vote to catch people would be to try and tackle
Los Angeles 9:00pm time to work for most others

Michael do you find there is much of a
delay
of the time that you write your email compared to
when it actually seems to get posted to everyone ?
I am writing this at 4:23 Los Angeles time which I
presume is 8:23 am for Michael
That was 2 1/2 hours ago! D'oh!

.html OK we'll give this a trial at 2pm Queensland Australia time Friday 24th April 2009.
Today I'll post a message so you know when it's 2pm here TODAY so add a day to that one.
Please try hard to be logged in at the time so we can get some on-the-spot interactive feedback.
The first release will be the cover. It's different to any other cover Neil has done. Neil has provided this cover and as I said you will see it first tomorrow.
It will be released in an email for this who CAN get it like this and it will also be uploaded to the files (her'es hoping Neil's home to do this).
I hope this works.
See as many of you as possible then.

|
.html So, I'm curious...am I the only one in this group who enjoyed
Malibu's Planet of the Apes comic-book run? Marvel's and Mr. Comics'
POTA stories get the most praise among fans, as far as I can see--and
understandably so, as both are wonderful reading. But I've always
been surprised at how little respect the Malibu run receives.
Sure, it had weak artwork during the earlier issues, and sure, it was
hampered at times by silliness (Frito and JoJo, for instance) or just
plain bad ideas (Ape Nation, Ape City and the annual come to mind, as
does the reanimation of Breck's and Caesar's spirits in the final storyline).
But I've always felt there was a LOT going for the Malibu
run. Alexander, Coure, Grunt, Ollo, Heston, Dr. Moto and Jacob were
fantastic characters. And Urchak's Folly, Blood of the Apes,
Countdown Zero, The Sins of the Father, Quitting Time and The
Forbidden Zone still stand as some of my favorite Apes stories of all time.
What do the rest of you think? Surely, I can't be the only Malibu
fan out there--someone else HAD to be buying and lovin' this serie
besides me and Terry Hoknes (whose letters of praise appeared in
several issues). Come on, folks--how about a little love for the Malibu line? <.html

.htmlHmmm...well they were NOT as bad as that BURTON fiasco!
The art on the whole was not my cup of tea.
I really liked Challoner's story and art, but that was the exception to the rule.
Didn't mind BLOOD OF THE APES.
Let me think more....

I am usually on most of the time except for today, because I volunteered to chaperone some first graders on a field trip. It's about 8:50 PM right now, when I post this message.

I've only been able to get my hands on a handful of issues locally (yeah, I know I could probably get them on eBay if I really wanted), including the early issues of POTA (which I
thought showed a lot of promise, but yes those Apes look funny), Urchak (which I loved), Sins (which I also liked a lot), Blood (which I liked, but I just didn't buy that Tonus would fall in love with an ape and not
notice she was a human in a costume - how good could her costume really have been?), and Ape Nation (the idea was flawed and the story didn't make sense in places, especially the ending, but I liked some of the
colour artwork). Funnily enough, I only got the conclusion of these stories by reading the synopses in your book Rich. They sound far fetched but I do want to read them some day.

I'd be using them for reference only. I have been buying lots of these over the past couple of years and I'm trying to match up the weapons with the actual figures they belong to. There are also 3
different lines of these, one taller version line, and 2 with different paint schemes that are on squattier bodies. Just curious if you can help me to solve part of the puzzle.

If you don't mind waiting a couple of days Rob I've got a set of six "taller" ones still carded which I could photo and put in the files.
I've also got a couple of the smaller / squatter ones, loose I could photo but not sure if I still have all the weapons for those.
As I say it'll be a couple of days before I'll get to it.

I agree with your assessments of those stories, Neil. And if my book inspires you to track down the remaining issues, then I've done my job. :)
Someone should really produce a collection of this entire series.

They were coloured
so much better than the US Adventures ones as well, It's just a pity they never
completed all of the movie adaptations. There's a couple of examples
here:
German
comic reprint pages
Here's an idea for a future
project - how about someone scans all the coloured German adaptations and and
replaces the German word balloons with the ones in English?

I must admit I was blown away when I heard they were coming. It must have been 1990 because I was living temporarily in the US in San Fransisco (at Menlo Park) with a friend and I was
looking for comic stores.
I didn't realise that I had the entire collection of Freak Brothers comics at the time (no internet to speak of in those days remember?) and I was seeking out anything I did not have. I forget the name of the store
but it was on the highway and it was frigging enormous!
I asked for second hand CURTIS POTAs and the guiy didn't have any but he told me there was a new series coming.
They started in 91 or 92 and I also recall buying them religiously and reading them after having a few herbal relaxants (even THAT didn't improcve them!). I even wrote to MALIBU GRAPHICS and payed for the issues
I'd missed (including the ANNUAL amongst many others that for one reason or another did not make it to Australia).
They ended up accidentaly sending them surface mail and they sent another via AIR then I got the first shipment about 3 months later..
Some good memories but the art killed the stories for me. Maybe I'll ask Neil to re-draw them and I'll re-read them? :)

enough, I only got the conclusion of these stories by reading the synopses in your book Rich. They sound far fetched but I do want to read them some day.

Fade to Black: Ending the debate
Burton's `Apes' remake not as bad as you might think

Fade To Black
Throughout the pages of the Arts section over the past few weeks, there has been much ado over remakes, reboots, and re-imaginings whatever name you'd like to brand them with or whichever type you'd like to
concentrate on, they're all products that have a good deal more to lose than the average picture. If a remade film bombs, the damage has the potential to be twofold: fans of the original will be upset and potential
fans with tabula rasa toward the franchise will be forever soured (even worse, if the director of the original is involved, this could spell disaster for his or her future).
Allow me, however, to play the devil's advocate for a few hundred words here. A few weeks back, I had mentioned liking Tim Burton's 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes." I'm not digging this up
because the flack I received for it or as a last ditch attempt at defending myself. I bring it up to defend what Burton did in the context of producing what I believe a remake should be.
To begin with, the premise of the original "Planet of the Apes" saw a lost team of human astronauts crash landing on a strange planet ruled by apes who can talk and have organized society. A few verbal spats
here, a few net-captures there, and Charlton Heston finds himself on a beach, brought to his knees, screaming "Damn you all to hell!" at the top of his lungs.
When Burton was faced with the challenge of retelling this story, he chose to put a radical spin on the idea that (spoiler alert) the "planet of the apes" was actually a post-nuclear holocaust Earth. The
original and the remake have remarkably similar first and second acts (minus the more futuristic look of the human spaceship in the beginning of the Burton film) and are only truly separated by their final,
"shocking" endings.
Here's where I differ from most Burton's ending is better. I won't spoil it in these pages except to say that it's a two-parter: there's the initial "holy ****!" moment, which is later
followed by a small, slightly comical kicker, both of which stack up more strongly against the original's.
Once again, this isn't an attempt to put down the original or its ending, but to laud what Burton did in terms of how to approach a remake. Burton brought something new to the table and updated it for new generations
by thickening the narrative rather than streamlining it.
This opposite end of the spectrum is Gus Van Sant's 1998 shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller "Psycho." Borrowing almost directly from Hitchcock's cinematography in certain
scenes and filling out the cast with cookie cutter prints of the original actors, "Psycho" is literally a "re-make." The excuse was made that it was "updated" for a new generation, which
translates into color photography rather than black and white and dollar amounts being updated for inflation over the past four decades. Other than those two factors, the only thing worth noting is that it showcases
Vince Vaughn before people knew him as Owen Wilson's co-star.
I'm not advocating a mentality of "source material be damned" (there was an awful lot of negative sentiment around The Towerlight office about the recent horrendous film adaptation of
"Dragonball"). I simply think it benefits any artist to not feel too tethered to a source material and take strides to add a bit of themselves to their adaption.
OK I swear that's the last talk of remakes (at least from me) for a good, long time. <.html

The ending is the same as the book (except
for the country it takes palce in). Burton didn't "thicken" anything (except his
wallet).

So what are the details of the new

I could see this cover definitely standing out in

I personally would like to see more colors

That looks awesome. I like that the colors
are muted. Not too flashy. That's the style that works these days, dark and
moody. "Gold Key" is out. I dig the logo, too, the "under construction" feel to
it.
I enjoy black and white more than I do color
so the lack of flashy color works for me.

I like the idea of "dark" as yes thats what
sells
but still would like to see more variety in
colors
as opposed to huge single solid colors
makes it look more cartoony than i think it
should
just want to see it look as graphic as

I hope this gets through!
I hope you have had a look at the cover and please let us know what you think.
I like it - it's very modern and looks like it says "come and buy me".
Like most comic covers it has NOTHING to do with the story but it's yet another gorilla, and yes he's got a gun!
I do prefer Neil's "true to life" looking artwork but I want this comic to sell and it feels like it will get to the younger generation.
What does everyone else think?
Neil - did you keep other cover ideas - I know there were a few? If so when you get home please upload mate!

However that's not easy!
I am hoping to get a big chunk of cash later this year. If and when I do I'll be throwing a large amount of it at getting some authorised comics published if I need to (hopefully someone else will see the light
before then).
It will be shown here on the group and if we can get this time/day synchronisation to work we'll show you drafts/ideas/comments from group members including Ty then the final pencils then the full colour pages.
