I can see your point, adding details. But this works for me. It makes the colors that are there stand out, especially the POTA title. Especially for a first issue. No one would miss that title out of the corner of their eye.

I like the idea of "dark" as yes thats what sells
but still would like to see more variety in colors
as opposed to huge single solid colors
makes it look more cartoony than i think it should
just want to see it look as graphic as possible

That looks awesome. I like that the colors are muted. Not too flashy. That's the style that works these days, dark and moody. "Gold Key" is out. I dig the logo, too, the "under construction" feel to it.
I enjoy black and white more than I do color so the lack of flashy color works for me.

Cover is interesting
It is to the point
So what are the details of the new comic
will it be read online only
or will there be a printed version?
I could see this cover definitely standing out in comic book store racks
I personally would like to see more colors
to show off the detail of Neil's work as much as possible

well that sounds great
I'll do all I can to help promote it
I think the biggest trick is to get distribution
if you can just get every comic store in North America to order 1 copy each
then you would guarantee so many sales
I wonder if a graphic novel format might be better
you make more money up front in sales and you guarantee that people order the whole series
as usually mini series sell well for the #1 issue and then peter out to the point of losing money by issue #4

The plan is to get it printed and published.

However that's not easy!

I am hoping to get a big chunk of cash later this year. If and when I do I'll be throwing a large amount of it at getting some authorised comics published if I need to (hopefully someone else will see the light before then).

It will be shown here on the group and if we can get this time/day synchronisation to work we'll show you drafts/ideas/ comments from group members including Ty then the final pencils then the full colour pages.

I guess the only reason I am being picky
is there are some amazing comic book covers out there from Marvel/DC etc
and I want to make sure Neil's work is taken as seriously
A little more variety in colorization might just stand out and look more like the big guys
I'm sure we've all heard about the fine details is what can make or break artwork

Ditto! I love that color combination also. I love the black surrounding the muted colors. The artwork is great. Great job!

No, the biggest trick is getting people to buy it. That's what's killed all the other POTA comics.
Aren't comic book stores on the way out now? Everything's online.

Yes that is a good point I would presume comic stores have propably been dropping in numbers over the past 5 years
In my city of 200,000 people we actually went up in the past year from 2 to 3 stores

But definitely reaching people online is the way to go especially for long term sales
you could sell ebook versions with no costs
you could get the books sold through lulu.com and have no expenses

you couldcontinually sell the book/comic through ebay/amazon/sell.com/abebooks.com/ pota sites etc.

Think I missed the party altogether. Anyway, I like the cover. It's dark and dramatic, like a post-apocalyptic comic cover should be. The only other image like this was the cover of the POTA video game, with the gorilla eyes emerging out of the darkness. The flash of light on the gun is a nice touch too. I think it sets a dark, brooding tone - is that the idea? (Remember, I don't know how the story will end, but aside from Battle and the TV series the movies all had dark twist endings.)

Well batting for the comic side and putting my comic retailer head on... :)  Comics shops have been pretty stable for the last 10 years.

In the states it was estimated that there were approx 10,000 independent shops in the early t0 mid 90s pretty much the peak where they seemed to spring up over night... then they were decimated !!!

At the moment it looks like there are 2500 to 3000 in the US, approx 500 in the UK.

Certainly since the down turn in the world economy  the comic industry hasn't faired as bad as other sectors.

If you look at the direct sales (Sales to comic shops on a non-returnable basis) they are down year on year but I think the latest figure for Feb was about 4 or 5 %

Compare this to the mainstream magazine industry which at the moment is being crippled by Distributor bankruptcy mass cancellations etc

Here's one story

http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idINWEN540220090303?rpc=44

(Mad magazine being one of the casualties going from a monthly to a quarterly sales having dropped from about 200,000  a few years ago to, if I recall, around  50,000)

So as they say "the new UP is FLAT"

A couple of flies in the ointment are the amount of money owed publishers by the big US book seller Borders a heavy stockist of graphic novels.

http://consumerist.com/5183629/is-borders-about-to-go-under

this could hurt comic publishers and have a knock on affect to retailers... but hardly the Comic shops fault

The other is that Diamond Comic Distributors have started to get a lot more picky about what items they carry again not the actual shops fault and some stores are already buying direct from the publisher if Diamond aren't stocking... so all in all the retail side of the industry is doing OK .

Which isn't to say on-line is not the way to go, just a small defence of brick and mortar stores.

Enough rambling

Best,Graham.

Hi, folks,

I have an idea for a third Planet of the Apes book, once I finish my
encyclopedia, and wanted to run it past you all, to get an honest
appraisal of what you think of the idea. I was consider writing a
guide to POTA fanfic--plot synopsis, characters, timeline setting,
continuity notes, etc.--since that's not covered in either book. It
would cover anything that's been published in Ape Chronicles, Ape

as on Kassidy's site and elsewhere. What do you all think? Is that
something that might interest fans? Or would I just be wasting my

Hey Rich. I hate to talk anyone out of an Apes project since there are too few & far between these days but I think a fan-fic book is pushing it & I'd hate to see you get burned. I'm sure there are terrific fan written stories out there & please don't yell at me for not being a fan of them but I don't think you could get people to buy your book. Hell, I'm sure its hard enough to get a fan written story noticed & read online for free!

Thanks for the honest answer, Mike--that was what I was thinking, too, so I appreciate your candor.

Incidentally, to give credit where it's due, the idea was sparked by a conversation I had with Terry Hoknes. Sorry, Terry--didn't mean to not acknowledge that.

Sadly, you're probably right about that. Thanks, John! I have a feeling a lot of people would agree. Ah, well--it was an interesting idea while it lasted.

I do think there would be merit in possibly having fans vote their fave fan fics and posting these on Hunter's site with some of our great fan artists contributing their artwork to it, but it's not something that warrants professional publishing IMHO.

Hello Eveybody

it sounds like a great ideal, my ideal was doing something like the 1977 Star Wars book
like the "Art of Star Wars". I wanted to do something like "The Art of POTA"  and have the original
scripts from the movies. I would like your opinions on this and I wanted to do something like a
coffee table book with rare and exceptional pictures from the POTA series.

Crazy, Sacred Scrolls, Simian Scrolls and Century City News, as well
as on Kassidy's site and elsewhere. What do you all think? Is that
something that might interest fans? Or would I just be wasting my
time, with limited return?

Great Idea!  The book with the Blu-Rays is the closest to that idea.  I think it could be done better.

Fox and Robert Rodriguez have announced they will be doing a "reboot' of "Predator" called "Predators" for 7/7/10. Rodriguez is known for doing his own thing when it comes to filmmaking. He quit the Director's Guild so he could co-direct a movie with Quentin Tarantino. He turned down POTA a decade ago because he felt it was being made by committee.
So does his coming on board mean Fox is giving the creatives some wiggle room to maybe do some interesting reboots? Maybe this means we'll hear an interesting announcement about POTA soon.
Anyway, Rodriguez gave Ricardo Montalban some new fans at the end of his career with the "Spy Kids" movies (Montalban in 3-D!) so he's OK in my book.

I've said it before, I think this would be fantastic and I'd dearly love to see it happen. Maybe a few prints of original script pages might work, things like unfilmed scenes and scenes that were changed heavily.
And I still haven't seen the blu-ray book or found scans of it - was there any previously unseen pictures included?

Nothing to announce at this time.

Script is still a work in progress.

Nothing could be possibly based on the new story or new characters because they are as yet not defined.

    Hi Missy

I tried to wait as long as possible before asking again if thereÂ’s any news – ie is the script finished/near completion?  Is Mr Frank letting anything out of the bag in the way of interviews etc?

There seems to be nothing but rumours at the moment!

Let me know if thereÂ’s anything I can know, and pass on to the fans.  ThereÂ’s talk of a comic based on Mr FrankÂ’s characters?

    Regards

    Michael

One of our group members ran into a comic artist who said something's on the

    This is exciting stuff!

What, if anything, can you tell us?

This is closer to something I was going to suggest. The Art of Planet of the Apes. With Graham's painting's, Neil's comic art, & all of the various works hosted at that art show about a year ago, It would be easy to fill a coffee table book of fantastic "fan" art. Plus, there are plenty of known artist who were inspired by Planet of the Apes that you may be able to include.

I just got back from a weekend in NYC.....

Everyone should see HAIR now on Broadway ...you will soar up to the ceiling.....

      Anyway...

Last Christmas I ran across a custom jewelry store down on MacDougal Street which had Planet of the Apes rings amongst the display in the window! Went in and talked to the guy....Al.....very nice man....at the time I left and forgot to get his info (I must have been drinking...yes I think I was....)

Found the store again this past weekend.......
I told him I would tell a group of people that span the globe about these and he might get some orders!
I know times are tough but they are pretty cool and very well made.

The pic shows Che Ape which I believe he said would run about $65
Cornelius which goes for 100....it is heavy with a solid back....
and General Ursus (?) which goes for 75.....this does not have a solid back.....
he also makes Zira but he was out of her at the moment.....not sure how much she is
Looks like he bases them on the Addar models......
Just tell him your ring size.....

      PLUS!!!

Up on the top shelf which I almost didn't see......Is a life-size wax(?) head of ZIRA! I asked him about it......He said somebody brought it to him years ago.....I think he traded some work for it.....He's not sure of the history but he said it does say "Kim Hunter" on the bottom.....I told him she used to live not too far away.....(I went and saw her very quaint building) So that was an added surprise......

So if anyone's in NYC , stop by and see Al and his three legged cat ("Oh, that's a horrible story" he told me...)
It's right on MacDougal near Minetta Lane....It's called C'est Magnifique (odd name for a shop run by a guy who looks like he knows Tony Soprano) or you can call or write....he said his website is down at the moment....

Tim - I actually did get the attachments open.

I feel I've seen that wax Zira before and I do think it's a WAX MUSEUM head. I think someone uploaded the entire figure a while back?

The rings do pop up on eBay every so often too.

I remember that Zira head on Ebay awhile back. I think it was mighty pricey, but I can't find it anymore in my e-mail items.

I feel I've seen that wax Zira before and I do think it's a WAX MUSEUM head. I think someone uploaded the entire figure a while back?

The rings do pop up on eBay every so often too.

I have a set of these...if this dude gets $250 for this one my set's for sale!

The rings are rare, but someonedi have a really big find I believe because somehow all the collectors (includes both POTA and MEGO fans) seem to have their quota...

I remember that Zira head on Ebay awhile back. I think it was mighty pricey, but I can't find it anymore in my e-mail items.

The rings do pop up on eBay every so often too.

          CYA Seattle

Filed under: random — Lee @ 8:57 pm

So today we continue the adventure. We checked out of the hotel in Seattle and went back into the city to go to the Science Fiction Museum. It was so cool! But sad to say they do not allow pictures to be taken- but there were so many things to see it took us a couple of hours to go through it all. They had robots - ones I remember was: Robot (danger danger Will Robinson!) from Lost in Space. The metropolis robot- R2D2 from Star Wars-

There were Borg and stormtroopers- apes from planet of the apes-

new found planets and amazing flying machines! The space suit worn by John Lithgow- and the suit that Matthew L. from the new Lost in Space wore. (he is much shorter than John Lithgow!) And Farrah costume from Logans run was there…. whowhooooooo tiny little piece of fabric.

There were homemade costumes that people had made for scifi conventions and had won contests with. those were pretty cool- discovered a new use for vacuum hoses!

There were masks for Planet of the Apes, Clingons and Far Scape.

There were original scripts for Star Trek and you could see where the actors made notes in them.

Old Sci-fi comic books and also weapons from Flash Gordon to Aliens! Plus… examples toy weapons from back in the 50s. Like the dreaded Ray Gun……

The list is just too long. It was a fun visit!!

          Long gone I'm afraid Tim...

I remember when I bought Christopher Sausville book back in 1998 and was telling my partner all about the toy rings and was very disappointed to see they weren't in there.

Of-course when I sat down latter and read in the book how scarce they were... oh why wasn't I more careful...the side bits which grip the fingers were the first bits to go especially the ones I'd stretched to go round my thumbs...

          Graham.

I hate to say it but I don’t think they are that rare.

I think because they are said to be in the Sauseville book, people are trying to cash in.

However, I believe someone’s sitting on hundreds of them (sounds uncomfortable eh?).

          Graham.

Tim if they were so rare they’d get the prices they are fetching on eBay.

          They never actually sell!

What they are is ridiculously priced.

          I think $100 each MAX!

          Graham.

I think you see this a lot these day Michael, particularly if there has been a "find" of some kind, as you say might have been the case with the toy rings.
The price never seems to come down, price guides don't come down, just a lot of sellers with "rare" items which don't tend to shift.
Supply and demand doesn't seem to work well in the collectors market.
The Marvel / Curtiss mags still guide high, particularly in the UK, but certainly over the last few years they seem reasonably plentiful (With the odd exception)

          Best,Graham.

I'd like to extend a huge welcome to Andrew E. C. Gaska from BLAM! Ventures.

Andrew, there's been a lot of talk about a new planet of the apes comic.

One of our group members ran into a comic artist who said something's on the
          way.

          This is exciting stuff!

What, if anything, can you tell us?

I just know as soon as I pay a shit load of money for them someone will find a box full of them in some old warehouse! They are always just so high priced but I don't think it's because of Sausville. I think 40 year old cheap ass plastic rings weren't meant to last 40 years!

I hate to say it but I don't think they are that rare.

I think because they are said to be in the Sauseville book, people are trying to cash in.

However, I believe someone's sitting on hundreds of them (sounds uncomfortable eh?).

Wasn't there an issue which had a colour cover? I thought there was one,
but I could be mistaken. I think that it was around the time of the
first revival, around issue #40. Then again, it may have been a case
where Terry had a colour version of the cover on his website, but the
fanzine itself was shipped in black and white.

Yes Dario originally I had printed issues #12 18 and 23 in color
the original print run had color but i stopped doing color obviously just due to printing costs
luckily color pages dont cost as much as they used to
so it could technically be done in the future
i havent got many comments good or bad from anyone about the different from color to B&W
