Before you book a hotel, ask if they honor the Comic Con special price this early. You save money, but not sure how much. BTW A lot of the celebrities stay at the 2 closest hotels.

I'm looking at comfort level...and closer is better for a 5-year old gorilla!!

I'm prepared to use my plastic nemesis (my credit card that I have the letters STOP!!! scrawled across of it in permanent marker) if I have to...

Jess.
Get a hotel that is close to the Convention Center, someplace like Embassy Suites, Manchester Grand Hyatt or
the Omni Hotel would be good places to get, but you better get them early, because the last time I tried to get a hotel
by using Travel Planners, they were sold out in about 2 hours. some of the people who goes to the conventions get
to contact the hotel before Travel Planners , I had to get a hotel about 6.5 miles away and used the trolley system to get to the
con.

Try and get the hotel early, like in January or February.

      that is a good point
however if Boulle had never had any success with this film

"Kwai" was a successful novel. Boulle was known without the film.
People were interested in POTA as a film because of the concept, not because of who wrote it. Two Boulle novels were made into classic films and yet none of his other books have been made into films.

It's a great movie, a classic with fantastic performances from Sir Alec, Jack Hawkins, William Holden and the rest. I haven't read the original Boulle novel, has anyone here? I wonder if it is as different from the movie as POTA is, probably not due to the subject matter.

I doubt it had much influence on what happened with POTA though apart from maybe the author's name being recognizable. I think Arthur Jacobs was influenced more by the idea and concepts of Monkey Planet than anything to do with BOTRK.

That's a good point. I have a few of Boulle's books and there are some decent stories so it is odd that there were only the 2 movies made from his books. They are so very different though that they could have been written by different people.

Maybe he was typecast after POTA became what it did?

Yes, Chris, I will cast him because I want to shrink him down to Mego scale...eventually I want to have a stadium scene in mego scale!!
I hope he looks like the Cornelius from the first film--that's who I was trying to capture.

I'm also going to give my HOt TOys gorilla a haircut soon...just have to gather enough nerves because there is no turning back. I'll photograph a before and after.

      Dear fellow apes,
I am currently working on a Cornelius sculpt. He's still not done but I wanted to show you his status. I need to walk away and see how I feel about him in a couple of days. He still needs a bit of massaging. Enjoy!!

Awesome idea. I don't mind the Mego outfits but having grown up with them it's hard to be objective.

I'm trying to get the chronology of 'Monkey Planet' publications (pre-movie) striaght but finding the internet no use at all - can someone help?
      What I've got is:

'La Planète des singes' published in France by 'Le Cercle du Nouveau Livre' - January 1963, by Pierre Boulle

'Planet of the Apes' published in USA by? - 1963?, translation by Xan Fielding?

'Monkey Planet' published in UK by? - 1964?, translation by Xan Fielding

'Planet of the Apes' in 'Saga: The Magazine For Men', USA - May 1964 (abridged from the USA/UK translation, presumably?)

'Planet of the Apes' (is that the title it went under?) in 'Bizarre Mystery Magazine', USA - November 1965 (abridged from the USA/UK translation, presumably?)

'Monkey Planet' published in UK by 'Penguin Books' - 1966, translation by Xan Fielding

      - if anyone can fill in the gaps or anything that's missing I'd be grateful.

Also, the movie rights - the net tells me that 'King Brothers' bought the movie rights initially and hired Serling in late 1963 to write a screenplay. He completed an entire treatment for them, but sometime before April 1964 the rights had passed on to APJAC, who retained Serling as a writer. But Jacobs also claimed to have bought the rights based on the French-language proofs of the novel before it was even published - that doesn't add up, surely?

...mainly. I'm sure you'll find a lot of significance in this dialogue from the first draft screenplay of Escape, if you haven't seen it before (because of the names, I mean):

Armando leads Lewis and Stevie past three cages in circus big-top

Armando: (showing first cage) "Here we have put the bad-tempered and troublesome Nero. He gets headaches and, like his namesake... ideas. His brain is growing faster than his cranium."

Stevie: "It's endemic among young chimps--"

      Lewis: "--and incurable."

Armando: (sadly) "I know. He will have to leave."

Nero slaps his aching head and pounds the floor of the cage.

Armando: (showing second cage) "Here we have bundled the rest of the troupe, including Heloise, Abelard and -- Salome, your god-daughter."

I’d have to say I don’t think they could make it shine any more than the DVD release.

It would be like one of the many releases we seem to be getting where it is on Blu-Ray, but the quality is no better.

To justify a BR release, they have to come up with a better looking master print, then transfer that to BR.

I hope I’m wrong but I think the POTA TV Show master is as good as you get and the DVD is as good a representation of that as you can get.

Anyone else suffer from inferior BR releases?

An undercover investigation has found that up to two gorillas are killed and sold as bushmeat each week in Kouilou, a region of the Republic of Congo.

The apes' body parts are then taken downriver and passed on to traders who sell them in big-city markets.

Conducted by the conservation group Endangered Species International, the investigation helps expose the extent of gorilla poaching in the country.

It fears hundreds more gorillas may be taken each year outside the region.

I agree Scott and I really think the TV Series looks fantastic on VHS and not too much better (not startling at least) on DVD.

But hey, John, they released CONQUEST extended so who knows WHAT they will come up with!

If FOX really decided to do a Blu release of the POTA TV Series they would have to go back to the original negatives, clean them up, and do a scene by shot for shot color timing correction.  Typical of many episodic DVD release this is a cost prohibitive concern that simply isn't done.  Movies are different since they are a single shot ordeal with a limited running time.  The very nature of even a limited run series is still up there when you consider the total running time and work involved.

Here in the US this is very rare if it happens at all.  In the UK there is more of a concern given to "library" releases for TV on DVD with restorations being conducted by companies like Granada who has put considerable effort into past shows like SPACE: 1999, and THE PRISONER.

In order to secure the effort they have made deals with various cable companies to partially pay for the rendering of HD masters.  It is further funded by deals made with DVD companies for both standard DVD masters from the HD for home video release.

Now in the case of FOX even though it is owned by one company with umbrella companies (Cable, Home Video) each is still in control and must abide by budgets set up within their realm. I'm not say it can't be done, I'm just saying it would take someone with both the fore thought and savvy to relegate a deal that would both pay and exploit the POTA Series for restoration/ remaster to spread out the cost and profit for this project to be done - both domestic and foreign - to make it work.

Going by the past I just don't see FOX doing this.

My only fear is that they could pull a fast one and simply  up-convert the old mastered and burn them onto Blu-ray.  This up-converting is something that goes on with some cable channels who aren't really broadcasting true HD masters of films.  Worse it when TNT actually crops films and broadcasts them in HD like the LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy - which should be 2.35:1 but is broadcast in 1.85:1.

Simply up-converting  a standard DVD master to 1080i is something a good DVD player can do.  It would be criminal if FOX decided to do the same and release the POTA TV Series on Blu just to save money and take advantage of the fans.

If the TV Series was ever scheduled for a Blu release it would been a restoration and new master to fully take advantage of the HD format.

most of the listing is quoting different weights for shipping
but this is a comic dealer/seller over in Europe
      who had these
i did some enquiring but dont speak the language
if you copy and paste the foreign text into various websites
they can translate it for you and you will figure it out a bit better

this particular email he is selling APEN PLANEET  #10
this is super rare and i dont think anyone on this list has ever had a copy including me and Tim  etc.

I didn’t have your standards OR your insights when I was 9 Rory (actually I’m POSITIVE the TV show didn’t get to Australia till 1976 so make that 11 years old!).

I very much enjoyed the first episode, and very much looked forward to the next.

POTA had earned my respect and taken me places no other film or TV show had and I wanted to entrust it to teach me more.

Sadly, when I try to watch it now the TV Show just puts me to sleep.  But thanks for the memories….

A BD release of the POTA TV series? Not very likely. Has anyone else
noticed that the number of Fox classic movie releases has dropped to
nothing? We just got a Blu-ray of the movie M*A*S*H and that's about
      it.

Scott is right, a BD release of the TV series would require a complete
restoration. I doubt anyone at Fox would go for it.

Watched the first episode on the 35th anniversary evening. You know
the day after it first aired back in 1974 I was depressed. I knew it
was bad and I still think it is. About three years ago I tried to
watch the entire series, an episode a day. I don't think I made it
      passed six episodes.

Oh, well... anyway some people like it.

If FOX really decided to do a Blu release of the POTA TV Series they
would have to go back to the original negatives, clean them up, and do
a scene by shot for shot color timing correction.

      .html
      .html

Back when the recent "Indiana Jones" movie was being made, there was a rumor that the early '80's TV show "Tales of the Gold Monkey" might be released on DVD. This show came on around the time of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" fever and was an adventure series in that vein. The DVDs didn't materialize but now there's word that they are being prepared for release in the U.K. and Australia (no word on a North American release).
So? Well, one of the regular cast was a certain Roddy McDowall, plus it has an ape/monkey title (though I'm sure Roddy told them, "Please, do not use the word MONKEY!", but they did). It was produced by Don Bellisario ("Magnum P.I.", "Quantum Leap", "NCIS") and it was only one season, so it's not a big commitment.
        Roddy fans rejoice!
