I saw this video a while back of Glenn 'Senator Nado' Shadix, who died a few days ago. It's a very moving story, as long as you're not distracted by his weirdly-mobile eyebrows...

Very cool. I love the carded Cornelius in his suit & some of the unusual characters you've included. Nice job.

Took me a while to find them but I’m glad I did!

There are some awesome examples.

Subject: Tom Felton talks "Rise of the Apes"
.html
.html
Ed Gross caught with the 2011 edition Dodge and took him for a test drive (this Dodge doesn't run a soil test but he will soil the screen with his wickedness). Felton is best known as the kid from "Harry Potter" you want to put over your knee and teach some manners. Hopefully Caesar will put him over his knee. To hear Felton tell it, "Rise of the Apes" is all good. For starters, he is a "huge fan of the franchise". He also calls the "Rise" script "one of the best things I've ever read, if not the best" (take that, Harry Potties!). But he seems to know the originals pretty well and he didn't say it was a direct prequel to them as some have suggested. Instead, "It's something completely new".
He also has great praise for the director, Rupert Wyatt, who really is getting thrown in the deep end of the pool having not done a previous big FX film. Felton calls him, "absolutely genius", and says "some of the stuff he has captured and I have seen is beautiful, it looks so cinematic as well as staying true to the story". He says, "Andy Serkis (Caesar) has been here from the start, and he sings Rupert's praises from the rooftops, and the fact is that he's been here every single minute of it, almost, and he's extremely excited". Sounds like there's going to be a lot of Caesar in the film.

OK fuck it I’ll answer myself.

Here’s a cel I bought for around $1,500 in (I think) 1996.

Also attached is a close-up of the “logo” that it came with.

I have 3 POTA Simpsons Cels I wanted to frame but I always wanted them to match this and it was always too difficult and/or too expensive (there’s 4 different borders!).

Anyone want to know how I solved it?

Michael

    OOOOOookay….

We’ve had a major breakthrough with the Japanese Anime Comics.

We have a translator who is going at a very fast rate.

It’s really hard to justify this project now because Neil and I are consumed with some new books and the next issue of the Forbidden Zine.

So the question is – is this really worth our time and effort?

I mean it’s just an adaptation of the movies…nothing original (except the really wacky parts).  Do we NEED to see them translated?

I’d appreciate some input so we can make an informed decision.

Hey Michael! That is exciting about th Japanese Anime Comics. Are you spending a lot of money with the translations?
I'm soo very glad to hear that you are still pushing on with the Forbidden Zine. I can't wait for that.

Your best bet would have been to simply get 4 identical new nice looking
frames and then remove that one cell from it's original frame.

Speaking of frames, I've been framing a lot of my POTA stuff as well
picking up the odd frame here and there. Creating my own little 'Wall of
POTA' once I have them all framed. Two correct sized frames that elude
my are the nice litho's you sent me. The good news is that I've framed
most of my Revolution original art and some nice original Foster art.

Not sure how I feel about the Japanese comics. If anything, it's the
deviations from what we know of the story that would make it
interesting. From the scans you showed us a while back, I assumed that
there was a lot of weird stuff going on in there.

Now that you have a translator, what would it take to get the word
'bubbles' changed? Have all the pages been scanned or is that something
else that would have to be done. IIRC there was some worry that the wear
and tear of the scanning process would perhaps damage the original. I
guess there is not much you can do with translated text unless you can
somehow get a scan into which you can replace the text.

But the best thing by far in your post was "Neil and I are
consumed with ... THE NEXT ISSUE OF THE FORBIDDEN ZINE"

    Yes!

    Put me down for one.

"Rise of the Apes" was reportedly scheduled to finish filming Sept. 17th. This Facebook page has a note from Hilary Miles Flowers Ltd. that the wrap party is tomorrow (Sept. 17). So it looks like they finished on schedule after about 2 1/2 months of shooting. I guess they didn't have any green screen mixups or a delay in shipping the green body suits.  : )

I was just asking someone last week about doing the translation - I had no luck, so this is great news. I'd love to see the translation but I know the book is huge and reads backwards, so there'd be a lot of work involved, right? It would be great to see it done properly, but maybe a compromise would be to share the original pages with translations attached to the bottom of the page or something like that? Might be less time-consuming.

    Actually, that's a good idea.

The person doing the translation must be writing it out as they
translate and capturing it in electronic form (a word doc or something)
then scans of each page could be imported above the text for that page.
It would make for a large file though.

Michael, is the comic broken down into chapters or some other smaller
sized chunks? It may be easier to split the work into sections.

    Hi Neil

Yes, an AMAZING amount of work to be done.

It doesn’t just read BACKWARDS, but actually from RIGHT to LEFT!  So you have to actually flip every PANEL (not just page) to make it work LEFT TO RIGHT.

I think we’ll do a web presentation where you scroll the mouse over the word balloon…or something….

    Any other ideas anyone?

    Michael

I realise this Mike but I’m no longer the idiot who forks out thousands of dollars on printing stuff people don’t buy.  Look for a guy wearing a clown outfit somewhere and ask him!  J

Rich recommended we use a PRINT TO ORDER publisher and that’s what we’ll do when finished so don’t be surprised if you end up paying dearly for it, but you WILL have the option.

I could go either way. I'm curious & would like to know the translation to find out what the hell they were thinking but it's also cooler (& creepier) in Japanese & having no idea what's going on in those wacky parts.

You can't just flip the panels though. The actual panels would be put in the right 'western reading order' but all the art in those panels is then backwards, which makes a huge difference as things like the gorillas' bandoliers, just to name one, will all be the wrong way round.

There's no easy way of doing it but I vote for just having a separate translation available for each page BUT that means if you want to print it it will now be 500 pages!

And don't forget that there is the Battle adaptation and the different version of Planet that are in the smaller manga as well. This version of Planet starts with the first 11 pages dealing with a story about the 5(!) astronauts blasting off and what happens before they land on the Planet of the Apes! It does then follow the movie almost exactly except it ends just after they have escaped from Ape City with Taylor and Nova riding off into the forbidden Zone while Cornelius & Zira hold off the pursuing gorillas with gunfire!!

Not very much larger, the manga is 18cm x 25.7cm (and 1.5 cm thick!)

Mucking about rearranging panels for something that's 250 pages long is not something I will be doing though (unless I get a huge amount of cash thrown at me!) ;-)

Yeah – he designed a logo for the POTA episode A FISH CALLED SELMA and these were incorporated with the framing.  Looks perfect.

Howdy, folks. The Holy Grail of Planet of the Apes lore has been unearthed--the script to the licensed 1970s U.K. live stage-show production of Planet of the Apes, written by Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy was generous enough to provide me not only with a complete copy of the script, but also other goodies to go with it, including a synopsis of an Apes-based arena show that ran around the same time, an ape-mask theater program handed out to audience members, news clippings, a poster from the show and other fun stuff. All of this has now been uploaded here:

    http://www.hassleinbooks.com/liveshow2.html"

Neil Moxham graciously granted permission to mine the images at his Wikia page article about the show, so that I could flesh out the script a bit. (What McCarthy provided was only enough to illustrate about half the script, so I wanted to punch up the rest a bit.) The captions for the images indicate what was provided by McCarthy and what came from the Wikia page.

    Enjoy!

One of the rarest items is Broiles' original script, before the studio scavenged it--mainly because it hasn't surfaced yet.

Yeah, I found that interesting as well.

The script is a combination of elements and characters from the TV series and the films, but set in London and geared toward a young audience. There's definitely a Virdon/Burke dynamic between the two astronauts, despite their being named Taylor and Brent, and as you say, Urko is more Ursus than Urko. I'm amazed we can finally know what the show was about after all these years of wondering. Hopefully, actual footage will one day surface.

No I never saw it. I remember the Daily Mirror had a half page spread and the local paper. It was the Evening Chronicle.
I will see if the show is in their archives somewhere.

    Enjoy!
    Rich

Yep, that was pretty much my reaction when the package arrived in the mail and I actually held the script in my hand. But I have to admit, my biggest grin came not from the script, but rather the ape-mask program.

Excellent stuff, thanks Greg & Hunter! The 'Planet of the Apes Chronicles' (Paul A. Woods) mentioned this script and called it "Serling's final draft". It's what the Edward G. Robinson test film was based on. It also describes how the explosion to destroy Cornelius' digging site accidentally unearthed the Statue of Liberty which, I recall, is how it happens in the Japanese comic too.

Tim I will have to think about that. It's do-able. It's just that I think it's more fun to be able to pose your figures. Maybe I'll have Dr. Maximus and Dr. Honorious over for dinner at C&Z's place someday and photograph that. It would be really hilarious but also a lot of work since I need to create the whole diorama. But anyway, I really like that idea. The apes would look so much more complete rather than just random heads floating on my window sill.

Run! The hills are alive!! No, it's the 45th anniversary of the "Sound of Music" and Fox is going whole hog in a way they never did for POTA. Re-release in theaters. Oprah! Wouldn't you kill for a POTA Oprah show?
"Sound of Music" was very influential on POTA for both good and bad. It was an absolute smash and put Richard Zanuck, the exec who said "Yes" to POTA, not "Nooooo!" (well, he said that too, but eventually he said yes), on the map at Fox. But it also inspired Fox to sink a fortune into musical flops that almost killed the studio and DID kill the budgets for the POTA sequels.
So happy birthday, SOM. It wouldn't have been the same without you.
P.S. I finally saw the Fox 75th anniversary logo on "Wall Street 2". Hopefully it will stick around long enough to be included on "Rise of the Apes".
