"The Flintstones" are 50 today. What does
that have to do with anything? I don't know but they're the Flintstones, pop
culture royalty. And I always noticed a similarity between their architecture
and POTA's. If the Flintstones are 50, POTA can't be far behind.

I can nudge this back on-topic: Henry Corden did the voice of General Urko in the POTA cartoon. Then he was the voice of Fred Flintstone from 1977 to 2005. You'll never find Urko quite
as menacing after you find that out!

It was 25 years ago that a filmmaker named Tim
Burton and a composer named Danny Elfman made a movie called "Pee Wee's Big
Adventure", the first feature film for both of them. To celebrate, here's a
place to put that $ 500 you don't know what to do with. A music collection that
makes every day feel like Christmas morning, if you celebrated it on
Halloween.
Oh, they did a POTA movie together
too:

Burton and Fox haven't teamed up since POTA but
they are hot for his new project "Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" (yes, you heard
me right). They didn't seem to leave on the best of terms after POTA2001 but
time heals all wounds. POTA is back on the lot by way of "Rise of the Apes" and
now maybe Burton. Isn't time swell?

they've heard that the opening sequence of "Rise of the Apes" has been assembled

Going Ape!
"If you thought Gorillas in the
Mist had some unnerving poacher sequences, wait till you see what the first
act of Rise of the Apes has in the store. They’ve cut together the
opening sequence of the movie and it’s frightening as hell! The flick opens with
a community of friendly chimpanzees, led by devoted duo Alpha and Bright Eyes,
running for their lives when a dozen poachers on horseback approach their
community, looking for pelt and subjects. The apes are terrified – lots of
screaming! – as the poachers attack, net and take down the poor things. Babies
are captured. Guns come out. Shots are fired. Bright Eyes loses her mate. It’s a
sad, sad massacre. Fade in on Franco’s character doing an experiment on the
newly-captured chimp – now alone, scared and without her friend. I have to say,
this is going to be a rather unnerving, disturbing but fabulous opening sequence
– definitely not one for the faint-hearted. If you’re anything like me, you
likely cringe at sequences involving animals being hurt or killed, this one’s
sure to impress but also distress"

Here's yet another James Franco film that's paving
the way for "Rise of the Apes", the medieval flick "Your Highness" (releases in
April, 2 months before Franco unleashes the ape-ocalypse). Between this, "Howl"
and his Oscar-buzzed one - man show "127 Hours", if Franco isn't a household
name by the time of "Apes" (instead of just "Spiderman's buddy" or "the stoner
from Pineapple Express") then it's not from lack of trying.

Andy Serkis is probably best known for playing
characters that are later turned into CG creations, like Gollum from "Lord of
the Rings" and King Kong from, uh, "King Kong" (and now Caesar in "Rise of the
Apes"). But he also plays characters using his own skin and one of those is
the new film from John Landis. Landis himself was in a POTA movie for a
millisecond, playing Jake's Friend in "Battle". Even cooler, he directed "Apes"
makeup legend John Chambers in his only screen role in "Schlock!".
So now Landis is teaming up with the new breed of
ape as Andy Serkis co-stars in "Buck & Hare". Here's the trailer (Andy is
the one who doesn't look like Scotty from the new "Star Trek"):

A new trailer has hit for James Franco's "127
Hours". A star is born (and then unleashes the ape-pocalypse). :
)
Fun Fact # 1: The stars of two different POTA
redos share a movie together. Marky Mark and James Franco are both in "Date
Night". No, I swear!
Fun Fact # 2: In "Date Night", Franco plays a guy
named Thomas "Taste" Felton; Tom Felton the actor plays Dodge in "Rise of the
Apes". Would I make this stuff up?
Will future generations of POTA fans make a
pilgrimage to that movie? They could make a worse choice. It's pretty funny if
you like the Steve Carell-type humor. Just sayin'.

It's been a long time coming but the "Lord of the
Rings" prequel "The Hobbit" has officially been greenlit and will start
production in February (maybe?). Many LOTR folks have been working on
"Rise of the Apes" including director of photography Andrew Lesnie, creature
actor Andy Serkis and the WETA FX shop (I'm still holding out hope that LOTR
composer Howard Shore will be added to the list). LOTR and now "The Hobbit"
director Peter Jackson is a POTA fan and spent many years trying to do the redo
that eventually went to Tim Burton. Jackson was Roddy McDowall's personal choice
to pick up the story and was enlisted to don the makeup again. I still
have the feeling that Jackson had something to do with all those talents winding
up on the new "Apes" and that the delays on "The Hobbit" facilitated it. Of
course, all those people have worked for others but that combination has only
previously come together on Jackson's films (including "King Kong", the most
obvious comparison).
Anyway, I dig the "Lord of the Rings" movies and
now I have another prequel to look forward to besides "Apes".
And I'm not the only one. Leonard Nimoy is excited
too:

as what I meant by "I'm sure he would have made some changes to the material"
is that whatever he was planning, it would have been a continuation of what
was, just with some slight alterations, much like he did with KING KONG...

| Subject: Meet the apes who will rise |
.html
.html
In the past, actors who played apes in the POTA
franchise were buried under makeup . . . but not forgotten. Talents like Roddy
McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Mark Lenard and many others came through
the makeup and created characters, not costumes. With the dicey new prospect of
apes created by computer, some may worry those days are behind us. I can't vouch
for what the final result will be but at least I can say there have been real
actors cast as the apes. The facial technology of today's CG does let the actor
come through. That's most obvious in something like "Avatar" where you can see
an actor like Sam Worthington or Sigourney Weaver as their human characters and
then as their CG counterpart "avatars".
So, based on my reading of the script and the
list on imdb, let me present the ape cast of "Rise of the Apes":
Andy Serkis (Caesar) - The "star" of the simian
cast, he's famously brought Peter Jackson characters like Gollum and King Kong
mid-way to life. His career is a history of this kind of thing. Of course,
Caesar needs no introduction.
Terry Notary (Alpha/Bright Eyes) - Notary is
perhaps the top movement coach in the biz. If you've seen the "Ape Camp" doc on
the POTA2001 DVD that's him putting the actors through their paces. He plays
both Caesar's mother and (doomed) father. He also does the misc. background apes
(that was him in San Francisco in those recent pictures of
filming).
Richard Ridings (Buck) - This is the star gorilla,
kind of the Aldo as he was originally envisioned for "Conquest". Described in
the script as Caesar's "lieutenant". Presumably he is named after Buck Kartalian
(Julius in the original POTA), a great idea.
Christopher Gordon (Koba) - Koba is the bully
chimp who gets in Caesar's face. Just a punk!
Karin Konoval (Maurice) - One of Caesar's buds,
presumably an orangutan named after the great Maurice Evans
Cornelia: There was a chimpette in the
script that Caesar had the hots for, perhaps a kind of Lisa, but the role hasn't
turned up on the cast list.
Apes and actors, take a bow!

Rumor is as rumor does but reportedly two of the
biggies from "Rise of the Apes" are looking into more sci-fi franchises for Fox.
Peter Chernin , big cheese producer of "Rise", is looking to remake the longest
running movie in history, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (which hits blu-ray
and "Glee" today) with the original movie's producer Lou Adler:
And "Rise" star James Franco is reportedly itching
to join Ridley Scott's prequel of "Alien":
If nothing else it suggests that "Rise of the
Apes" when smooth enough for these folks to want to re-up with Fox.

"Happy Days" was one of my favorite shows as a kid
so I was sad to hear the news of the passing of "Mr. C", Tom Bosley. Then I
remembered he was also the host of "That's Hollywood!", which featured a full
episode on the POTA movies (and a good one too). So, thanks for making my POTA
memories too, Tom.
Sorry, this is the only "That's Hollywood!"

I remember seeing that episode of That's Hollywood and absolutely loving it. I am hoping to come across a replaying of it someday on cable tv, but that hasn't happened. :(
RIP Mr. Bosley.

If anybody's interested, I have these available for purchase. They just need to be painted, and the neck plug dremelled out, and they should fit a 12-inch action figure body. I will clean/eliminate any

.htmlVery sorry for not getting back to this earlier.
As you may recall I've mentioned in the past that I would one day like to colour Beware The Beast. Well we've finally decided to go ahead and do it and at the same time very slightly change and re-arrange some of
the story and text so it 'works' as a single issue graphic novel.
There's a couple of reasons for doing this, one being that it was of course written to be separate 'episodes' and in some places the flow of the story is affected.
I'm currently adding word and thought balloons as some readers did complain that they were confused in some parts as to whether it was the Narrator or Gideon speaking/thinking.
I've already changed some of the panels and art to also help the flow and fix up a couple of things that were not quite right. The couple of pages I posted were examples of this. Just check them against the originals
to see what I am talking about.
Not exactly sure how long it will be before it is fully completed but we will certainly let everyone know when it is.

The mystery of who will compose the music for the
new "Apes" movie rolls on. I've said before my choices for the job: John
Williams, Howard Shore, Michael Giacchino or Bear McCreary. Sunday, I got to ask
two of them about it, Giacchino ("Star Trek", "Up") and McCreary (acclaimed for
the recent "Battlestar Galactica"). Giacchino said in the past he grew up on the
POTA TV show. He confirmed to me he loves POTA: the movies, the TV show,
everything. But he hasn't been contacted about it and he's pretty busy so he's
not particularly interested in pursuing it. He said, "I'll probably just watch
that one". Strike One.
McCreary just shrugged. He's open to it but
hasn't been contacted either. I hinted that maybe since he's a "TV guy" and some
people don't have a lot of imagination that he should help them
imagine it. But he's pretty busy too. I love McCreary's music and I think "Apes"
would be a perfect fit as his intro to big movies, given his sci - fi work. But
Strike Two.
Anyway, it was cool to meet two of my favorite
composers. Given the importance of CG to the film maybe they are waiting until
more of the movie is done before approaching composers (especially considering
the lack of experience of the director with big FX movies). But next summer's
movies are grabbing up composers (Giacchino's next Pixar movie, "Cars 2",
opens opposite "Rise of the Apes"; traitor!). So hopefully Fox and Co. won't
wait too long if they want a good one. POTA has a good, perhaps legendary, rep
when it comes to music. Let the tradition continue. <.html <.html

Jane Goodall began studying chimps 50 years ago in
1960. Her work and others' have given us a solid knowledge base on apes and
cleared up some of the cliches that even POTA has trafficked in (such as docile
chimps and violent gorillas). The '60's were a golden age of primate study, just
after Pierre Boulle created his novel. Jane was inspired to travel to Africa and
study animals by stories about Tarzan and Dr. Dolittle (the latter of course
made into a movie by Arthur "Apes" Jacob). So though her work with is with
the reality of chimps, it shows the importance of stories.
Though Jane pretty much introduced us to the
chimps she now works hard trying to save them. She estimates she spends about
300 days a year on the road trying to do just that. Her 50th anniversary is
being celebrated in the media including last night's "60 Minutes".

James Franco is making the rounds promoting his

he's a fan of "Lord of the Rings" and wanted to work with those people and get
the CG experience. The truth hurts. : (

Ed Gross has put up comments from the director.
Actually, he doesn't say much but does mention he thought of the movie in a
biblical sense, as a story future generations of apes would pass down. But it
depends how well this one does to determine how much risin' we get: "It's just
the beginning, the rest is the sequel, and hopefully there will be many more
after that. I think the perfect sequel to this would be the actual war between
the apes and the humans, which could be a fun story to tell".

Conspiracy is still coming out, along with a sequel novel, but the timetable has been changed due to circumstances beyond BLAM!'s control. No firm release date is in place yet, but the
first novel's manuscript is edited and the second is being plotted. Given the delay, Drew decided to offer fans a glimpse at Conspiracy's story and characters by authorizing material from the novel to be
included in Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes, which is fully laid out and now in the final-proofing stage, with an anticipated Amazon.com release date of Dec. 15 or so.

But Mike, it also has a dimension of believability that PLANET does NOT!
The massacre of apes for bush meat - to the point of near extinction - is an incredibly important thing to consider now and would be insane not to be included in a scenario re the revolution of apes.

I think it's fully intended to be a reflection of
the "hunt" scene from the original. It's a reversal, they aren't trying to rip
it off. More iffy is using names like "Dodge". I think it's cool to name
characters after actors in the original, but they are going a bit overboard
(they have an ape named Maurice and a human named Evans). Obviously it's meant
to score points with the fans of the original, who rejected the Burton version.
As for this "hunt", I believe it's to round up
specimens for the labs, not bush meat, but it's still ape abuse.

from PLANET as long as there's a reason for it and it's not done just to do
it for the sake of doing it... It makes sense to show a "hunt" as the way
the lab apes were obtained... But here's a "POTA As American Myth" moment:
Maybe the ROTA hunt is intended to mirror the capturing of slaves as seen in
the mini-series ROOTS? Both will feature characters ripped from their native
land only to be subjugated... I know that's "not" the reason (I know it's to
mirror PLANET) but since I read that book, I find things that even the film
makers themselves don't know they're saying ;)
And I said it before, I HATE all the "cute" little references they are
adding to it... We don't need to be slammed over the head with all the names,
etc... This is something I think we totally agree on... ***

Meh...Sideshow gorillas don't have the insane costume that the Hot Toys gorilla wears. The only person that would be able to reconstruct the detail of the Hot Toys gorilla outfit and successfully do it in my
opinion is Kato of the Sideshow Freaksboard/OneSixthWarriors forums, and you would basically have to spend just an insane amount of money if not more to get him to make one.
I just wish I bought a regular gorilla instead of a "Captain" gorilla. But his face looks way better to me than the Hot Toys gorilla sculpt who looks like some yokel.

Subject: director, writers talk "Rise of the Apes"
Ed Gross chats up director Rupert Wyatt and the
writers of the new "Apes" movie. Pretty much general comments but good to hear
what sparks their interest.
Writer Rick Jaffa says, "it's socially relevant
the way I think (the originals) were and I think that ultimately the theme is
the same. That theme, for us, is if Man plays God, it's going to eventually come
back and get you".
Wyatt describes the plot, saying," we see a
scientist, a man who is driven to becoming this Dr. Frankenstein, and the
reasons behind why he does that. The personal reasons as well as the hubris.
It's also the story of his relationship with his creation. As such, I think it
makes it a much more personal story than what's come before".
Writer Amanda Silver adds, "this is a film with a
lot of heart. In many ways, that is a motor for the story, but it becomes a very
exciting story".

People have been assuming that "Rise of the Apes"
will be something like "Conquest", but the director said if the ape vs. human
war is depicted, it would be in the next film. I'd say that would make IT
the new "Conquest", while "Rise" is more like "Escape". Apes don't land from the
future, but it's about one ape (Caesar) interacting with the humans. Amanda
Silver, the writer, said there's a lot of heart, and I think that description
fits "Escape". >SPOILER< And the film literally climaxes with an escape,
not a conquest. Like "Escape", the movie will be more intimate and show how
things get started. And it happens that 2011 is the 40th anniversary of
"Escape", so it all fits. <.html <.html

Hmmmm. OK I do see your point but I think
it’s intentionally geared to be a CONQUEST, but possibly without the actual
uprise. They have named the main character Caesar and I doubt there’s
a coincidence that the DVD release was of Caesar’s head (why not
Cornelius or Zaius or the ever popular selling gorillas?). I think it’s
going to show how the uprise is possible, and at the end I do think we will get
an uprise on some scale, but a smaller emphasis on it.
Anyway, I have liked the film from the
start and it is becoming what I thought it would be so it looks like my
uneducated guess could be right (touch wood and do not say “Tim Burto……”)

Caesar is in "Escape" (as Milo). I've read the
"Rise" script and from what I've heard of the filming it sounds like they're
following it. There isn't any battle between apes and humans. It just sets
things up. I could see a trilogy with Caesar. "Rise" as "Escape" (the origin).
The next one as "Conquest" (taking control). And then the next as "Battle"
(growing pains of a new society). Then they could do two more (or another
trilogy) set in the future of the ape society (like "Planet" and "Beneath"). Not
exact copies but riffs on the basic stories.

ESCAPE... In a way, ESCAPE shows the results of everything that happened
before it... It doesn't show any origins of development of intelligence or
genetic engineering or whatever else ROTA is supposed to show: The apes arrive
here already showing the end result of everything that came before it... You
can't consider baby Milo/Caesar as a result of anything that they'd be
cooking up in ROTA, he's already genetically "enhanced" due to his parents and
their bloodline(s), so you can't use him as a comparison to what this new
Caesar will be going thru... The only time ESCAPE shows Caesar "interacting" with
humans is with Stevie, Lewis, and Armando, and that's only during his birth
scene and with just Armando at the end of the film... ROTA will not even be
comparable to ESCAPE (or CONQUEST) that way, because Milo/Caesar is raised
off screen by Armando, in a circus and he's already intelligent... ROTA
Caesar will be lab raised, interacting with humans as a lab specimen, and his
intelligence will come from manipulating genes, none of which happened to
Milo/Caesar...
I don't think ROTA will exactly be CONQUEST oriented either, because from
everything you're saying, it's all a build-up and shows the main ape's
backstory and nothing else, probably not even anything as subtle as lab apes
picking up syringes and sticking them in the scientists... But it's still sounds
more CONQUEST-like because it will show some of the messing around with
genetics that eventually causes high intelligence in the ape population... No,
CONQUEST doesn't show any of it, never really implies it either, but there
had to be something like that going on in the CONQUEST "backstory" and/or the
"backstory" of the original ape revolt (that led to PLANET)... ROTA sounds
like it will just be a lot of "filling in the blanks" as to how apes become
intelligent, but that will be the backstory for it's own entity/franchise...
I'm still not convinced ROTA is a prequel to anything though, I still
consider it a "reboot" and it'll be the start of it's own franchise "inspired by
Pierre Boulle"... ***

I think the term “prequel” is
loosely used anyway Mike. I think they are using the term as “well
it does not really fit into the timeline but if you DO you will have to say it’s
a PREQUEL because it’s placed prior to 395 something”.

There's no similarity in storyline between "Rise"
and "Escape" but the dynamic is similar. A small group of apes interacting with
the humans who are in charge. And probably Caesar will bond with the humans (the
scientist, his girlfriend and his dad with Alzheimer's). I think it will be
closer to "Escape" in tone than to any other Ape movie.

intelligence in the ape population... No, CONQUEST doesn't show any of it,
never really implies it either, but there had to be something like that
going on in the CONQUEST "backstory" and/or the "backstory" of the original
ape revolt (that led to PLANET)... ROTA sounds like it will just be a lot of
"filling in the blanks" as to how apes become intelligent, but that will be
the backstory for it's own entity/franchise...
I'm still not convinced
ROTA is a prequel to anything though, I still consider it a "reboot" and
it'll be the start of it's own franchise "inspired by Pierre Boulle"...

There's no similarity in storyline between "Rise"
and "Escape" but the dynamic is similar. A small group of apes interacting with
the humans who are in charge. And probably Caesar will bond with the humans (the
scientist, his girlfriend and his dad with Alzheimer's). I think it will be
closer to "Escape" in tone than to any other Ape movie.

*** I agree with Whitty on this, I think it's more CONQUEST oriented than
ESCAPE... In a way, ESCAPE shows the results of everything that happened
before it... It doesn't show any origins of development of intelligence or
genetic engineering or whatever else ROTA is supposed to show: The apes
arrive here already showing the end result of everything that came before
it... You can't consider baby Milo/Caesar as a result of anything that
they'd be cooking up in ROTA, he's already genetically "enhanced" due to his
parents and their bloodline(s), so you can't use him as a comparison to what
this new Caesar will be going thru... The only time ESCAPE shows Caesar
"interacting" with humans is with Stevie, Lewis, and Armando, and that's
only during his birth scene and with just Armando at the end of the film...
ROTA will not even be comparable to ESCAPE (or CONQUEST) that way, because
Milo/Caesar is raised off screen by Armando, in a circus and he's already
intelligent... ROTA Caesar will be lab raised, interacting with humans as a
lab specimen, and his intelligence will come from manipulating genes, none
of which happened to Milo/Caesar...
I don't think ROTA will exactly
be CONQUEST oriented either, because from everything you're saying, it's all
a build-up and shows the main ape's backstory and nothing else, probably not
even anything as subtle as lab apes picking up syringes and sticking them in
the scientists... But it's still sounds more CONQUEST-like because it will
show some of the messing around with genetics that eventually causes high
intelligence in the ape population... No, CONQUEST doesn't show any of it,
never really implies it either, but there had to be something like that

That fanzine timeline (from around 1976, by the looks of it) says something about "the new film, 'The Secret On The Planet of the Apes'..." ??
