Subject: Life in a "War" zone
.html.html Last night I went to a screening of "War For the POTA" with a Q & A of the director Matt Reeves. It was a Jeff Goldsmith screening which means it was a low key groovy event. There was like 20 people there so I got to ask what I want. By the way, Jeff Goldsmith Q & A's are awesome so when this becomes available I will let you know.
To the point: I asked Matt about the box office and whether Fox wants to consider more Apes with the drop from "Dawn" to "War". He sez "War" made a profit and Fox is still enthusiastic. (for those who think Reeves is lying because he directed "War", I was there and believe him; he's a serious guy). He also said he doesn't know about any future movies but maybe they will wait for him. He definitely wants to do more Apes. He is a true believer. BUT with Batman on his dance card maybe for the next decade that might not be a good idea. His Batman might flop and he could go back to Apes soonish but I doubt it. Call Oliver Stone. I also asked him my big question about the movie: Where do the apes end up? As far as Reeves is concerned it's an open question but he assumes they are in Nevada (most of the movie taking place in California).
Those were my questions and for asking them I received an awesome "War" poster personalized by Matt. He also added his sig to my Eric Greene book (between Heston and Oliver Stone). Reeves is as friendly and full of stamina as you'd want. His plate is full but he was graceful to everyone. As far as the rest of the lengthy Q & A (which I will announce when it's up) he said they toyed with the idea of Maurice being the Lawgiver (literally like in "Battle" where you hear his voice in the beginning and at the end you know who it is). The thing about Goldsmith's Q & A is it's writer centric so there's lots of gems about the creative process.
Another thing that stood out: Fox was high on Reeves and while he was finishing "Dawn" they asked him to do "War". So when they started "War" he and his co-writer Mark Bombeck (who is also giving his opinion on Batman) asked Fox to let them watch some movies together as inspiration. Fox let them use the Zanuck Theater. Reeves' dad worked in the industry and Reeves got to see the original "Star Wars" at the Zanuck Theater in 1977 before it was released (of course now his lifetime pal and collaborator J. J. Abrams is literally working on the new "Star Wars" movies – talk about surreal!). Anyway, they could use the Zanuck theater but watch the movies on blu-ray. BUT Fox said they could watch ONE movie in it's original print. So they chose "The Empire Strikes Back". Reeves assumed "Dawn" would be their "Empire" (a dark middle chapter) but now he sees "War" that way.

.html.html Word is that Disney is still negotiating for Fox so POTA might have a new home before the year is out. Comcast (which owns Universal Pictures) is also a suitor (I'd prefer them because they are not so family friendly). Meanwhile Cornelius is holding Zira close… <.html <.html

.html Nothing wrong with being family friendly but I do think they'd probably tone things down and it wouldn't match the tone of the original. Although some of their Star Wars scenes were apparently kind of dark, so it's hard to tell.

.html.html .htmlMaybe we'll finally get the long awaited "Planet of the Apes" musical we've all been clamoring for...
Word is that Disney is still negotiating for Fox so POTA might have a new home before the year is out.
Comcast (which owns Universal Pictures) is also a suitor (I'd prefer them because they are not so family friendly).
Meanwhile Cornelius is holding Zira close…

Nothing wrong with being family friendly but I do think they'd probably tone things down and it wouldn't match the tone of the original. Although some of their Star Wars scenes were apparently kind of dark, so it's hard to tell.

Sigourney Weaver, who played Fossey in the acclaimed "Gorillas in the Mist", narrates it. Add this to "Jane", the doc about Jane Goodall that looks like it has a shot at an Oscar nomination/win for Best Doc. In times like these we need to go ape! <.html <.html

.html.html The San Francisco Film Critics Circle named Andy Serkis Best Actor for "War". Congrats! Fox said they will try to get "War" some awards love but so far it hasn't made a dent. It's a particularly heavy year for acclaimed genre movies with "Wonder Woman", "Logan" , "Blade Runner 2" and "The Weight of Water". It's still early but so far none of the Nu Apes have had much success. People pay lip service to how good they are but don't put their awards where their mouth is. I personally got the chance to wish Matt Reeves luck this awards season and hopefully "War" will get some before Fox gets swallowed up by Disney (which looks to be happening).

.html.html Word is that the Fox/Disney deal is done and will be announced Thursday. Those who want to mourn Fox, wonder about the future of POTA, get ready. We don't know what it all means yet (will Disney continue Fox as a unit of it's company or just pick it's bones?) or even whether it will get through government regulations (reportedly Fox chose Disney because it had a better shot then going with Comcast). AT&T's deal for Time/Warner is still jumping through hoops. I've heard the transition will be about a year so Fox could conceivably greenlight a groovy POTA movie that would be too far along for Disney to strop it.
In the end, Disney these days is not the innovator Fox is. Disney's biggest brands owe a debt to Fox. Fox was the first to put big money behind a Marvel comic book movie with "X-Men" (2000). Of course Fox greenlit the first "Star Wars" movie (based on their success with POTA). And one could say Fox rolling the dice on George Lucas led to Pixar (he nurtured Pixar in it's formative years). And Disney's successful live-action versions of their classic cartoons is based on Walt Disney's innovations, not theirs. Will Disney make Fox a division that does it's own thing? Unlikely. Let's not forget that Fox Searchlight is their indie division that almost always has a Best Picture winner or nominee. Hard to imagine Disney maintaining that.
On the other hand, Disney paid a reported $74 billion for Fox (30% above the market value) so they aren't doing it just to eliminate competition. Reportedly the big reason is to have content for their streaming service (the future that has made huge successes of Netflix and Amazon Prime). We're in the era of people watching movies on their phones. Innovation is technology, not movies anymore. 20th Century Fox has a storied history and I will mourn it. There would be no POTA movies if Fox hadn't greenlit them (and even that was a struggle). Plain and simple, we here owe it a lot. RIP Fox.

.html.html A much as Fox has messed up a lot of stuff over the years I hope this deal doesn't end up sealing their fate. There was a lot of worry and concerns when Disney bought Marvel but they have been fairly "hands off" and let them do what they were doing. If anything it is the merchandising, tie- ins, and other deals that may come out helping the PotA franchise. They tend to leave money makers alone and even though the "new" PotA did not do as well as some hoped it still made money.
Only time will tell... Dario

.html.html Hmm... In a way, the RISE-DAWN-WAR trilogy could be interpreted as a kind of Frankenstein-story, with James Franco's character as a kind of Dr. Frankenstein. Bringing back functional intelligence to someone afflicted with Alzheimer's is not that different from bringing the Dead back to life. And, in doing so, he inadvertently creates a "monster" that threatens society, etc.
And, just like Dr. Frankenstein's creation, Caesar doesn't really become a threat until after he is persecuted and (seemingly) abandoned by his creator, who is, after all, responsible for him... reacting to the mistreatment meted out to him by abusive humans.

.html.html Amen. In 2010 I was big on Kenneth Branagh when it was announced Patrick Doyle was going to do "Rise". A mad scientist movie and they had done the original mad scientist movie with "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein". So I did do a detour into mad scientist movies back then. Damn, so much high hopes back then. And it lived up to it with "Rise", "Dawn" and "War". But the future is unknown with the Disney buy.

That's OK, it's more than enough (*sniff!*). : ( "War" shares the category with "Blade Runner 2049", "Guardians of the Galaxy 2", "Kong: Skull Island" and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". Will Kong and Apes cancel each other out? Meanwhile, Fox did well with "The Shape of Water" (the most nominations) and "3 Billboards". Even the X-Men film "Logan" got a screenplay nom. Apes actors Gary Oldman and Woody Harrelson got acting noms. Even "The Square", which has Terry Notary playing an ape actor, got a Best Foreign Language Film nod.
Andy Serkis announced the nominees this morning (with Tiffany Haddish) so an Apes surprise would have been cool. But this is why we can't have nice things. <.html <.html

.htmlYep - this is definitely the most interesting thing, comics-wise, to appear in a good while. Interesting choice too - I would have thought the original novel would be a more obvious source to adapt, but I like this idea. What's next? Boulle's Planet of the Men? Dehn's Battle concept? Some of the 80s/90s scripts? Bring it on - this is a great way to explore those ideas.

Subject: original POTA at USC
.html.html Went to the big event at USC last night. Screening of the original POTA on it's 50 anniversary + one day. Looked like it was the blu-ray. Too clean. The usual, a lot of laughter. Some people just can't take POTA seriously. But also a lot of applause. Then the panel. It started with a video intro of Andy Serkis saying hi, sorry he couldn't make it but he's promoting "Black Panther". They are hopeful Serkis can be in one of the upcoming panels. Linda Harrison couldn't make it, she'll be at the POTA2001 panel in March instead. But makeup artist Dan Streipeke and production designer William Creber played for the 1968 home team.
Also there was the newbies: directors Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves, producer Dylan Clark, writer Rick Jaffa (co-writer Amanda Silver couldn't make it), and FX maestro Joe Letteri (a late addition). https://www.instagram.com/p/BfAVit8FE7j/
At first it seemed kind of weird to have the new folks outnumber those representing the original but in the end it was a great way to show the connective tissue of 50 years. Both the original and the new ones were in the same boat: risky experiments to bring the apes to life, whether makeup or CG. In both cases they wondered if they could get away with using stuntmen but realized they needed good actors to make it work. Though some complained that the new trilogy didn't use makeup, I've always maintained that CG allowed Apes to be a groundbreaker again. So I'll just remember what I can. Most of it was stuff Ape fans know well. Moderator Alessandro Ago, who is really the backbone of bringing this all together over the next few months, was pretty democratic in going down the line so everyone could speak.
Streipeke said he and John Chambers knew each other since "The Pinky Lee Show". Even though the Edward G. Robinson makeup test sold the movie, he wasn't a fan of it. He confirmed how Hollywood was bereft of makeup artists while the movie was being made.
William Creber talked about the same stuff he did in the "Behind the POTA"; creating Ape City, shooting the Statue of Liberty scene. It was his idea to show only parts of the statue at first because Schaffner didn't want an abrupt reveal. As is well known, Creber sketched the sequence out on a napkin. In the past he said he still had the napkin but says now he's lost it. Another interesting thing is, as we know, Arthur Jacobs wanted Creber to get the makeup artists a live ape to study. What Creber revealed is the one he got was Debbie the chimp from "Lost In Space". Another thing Creber kept emphasizing is Jacobs wanted the audience to not know it was Earth at all costs. So, to him, that's the reason for Lake Powell, that's the reason for the weird buildings. So it looked like an alien planet.
For me the main theme of the panel was how the more things change, the more they stay the same and how the process of the original and the new ones were so similar. That was also obvious when the moderator went from asking Creber about designing Ape City to asking Matt Reeves about designing the village for "Dawn". Both were about designing something that apes would build, as removed from human buildings as possible. Matt also talked about his love of POTA as a kid before he also became a big "Star Wars" fan. Apes was his "Star Wars". He mention he filmed an Apes/ Star Wars mashup on 8 mm with his friends called "Galactic Battles". www.slashfilm.com/matt-reeves-star-wars/
A lot of attention was paid to "Rise" and what a game changer it was. Matt Reeves talked about how in awe he was of Rupert Wyatt. When Reeves started on "Dawn" he was lost about whether it would work but at least he had "Rise" as an example that it COULD work. Wyatt had nothing but to just jump off the cliff. They shot the Golden Gate Bridge action scene with just stunt men and realized, no, they needed actors to make it work. Joe Letteri was a big booster on that score: Get Andy Serkis (Letteri had worked with Serkis on "Lord of the Rings" and "King Kong", and later "The Hobbit").
Rick Jaffa talked about how "Rise" just came out of the blue. He and his wife Amanda were looking for a story for a script. They had newspaper clippings of genetic experiments and clippings of people who kept chimps as pets. Those two piles of clippings just hit him like a lightning bolt: This is POTA! The panel was also clear that Fox deserves praise for taking a chance on POTA, not just the original but also "Rise". My favorite part of the panel was when they were asked about balancing bleak storylines with expensive popular entertainment. Both original and new talent talked about how important these stories are. Maybe Joe Letteri said it best; he wanted to do "Rise" because it was a movie he wanted to see.
Then surprise guest Dana Gould (in full Zaius makeup and costume) hit the stage. The comedian brought down the house. Jokes I can remember: The original POTA shows don't trust an orange politician (Hi Trump!) Nova actress Linda Harrison also happened to be the girlfriend of the head of the studio, Richard Zanuck. "What are the odds of that?" Heston's original final line was: "They have a Statue of Liberty too!" Gould is not only funny but he's a huge POTA fan and very knowledgeable about it. He added a lot to the conversation.
Then the audience got to ask some questions. One of them had flown in from Toronto just for the event. Most of the questions wound up going to Matt Reeves. I don't remember them right now but the last questioner was none other than Bobby ("Battle" Cornelius) Porter who praised all on the panel.
After it was over I zeroed in on producer Dylan Clark, the only one I'd never met before. He now has his own production company that has a deal with Universal. I assumed that meant his Ape days were over but he told me he would gladly be there if there are more Ape movies (and he thinks there should be). Right now he's producing Matt Reeves' Batman for Warner Bros. so he seems free to go wherever he wants. He's also doing a movie version of "Battlestar Galactica" for Universal. As I've said here before the newer BSG series is one of my favorites, up there with Apes itself (and indeed has many Ape references). So I asked him how that was going. He is so passionate about the script they have and after producing "Rise", "Dawn" and "War" I'm ready to give him the benefit of the doubt.
He is equally passionate about continuing the "Ape" movies. I asked him about the Fox/Disney deal and he's not sure what that will mean. When I suggested they could start a new Apes now and get it too far along for Disney to stop it, he said they probably wouldn't do that. So it looks like they will wait for the dust to settle before they contemplate the next Apes. It'll be in Disney's hands. But there no doubt they are all still passionate about it, despite the box office hiccup. Even Matt Reeves, who acts like it's his to continue even though he might be doing Batman the next decade. And of course there's also the exhibit (1/26 – 5/13/18) which is awesome. Rare photos and props from all the movies, merchandise. It's a madhouse!
2/20/18 – screening of "Beneath" (with Apemania) and "Escape" 2/28/18 – screening of "Conquest" (with Don Murray) and "Battle" (with Bobby Porter) 3/28/18 – screening of POTA2001 with Designer panel (+ Linda Harrison) 4/11/18 – screening of "Rise" with Business panel (offshoots like comics, merchandise) 4/15/18 – double feature of "Dawn" and "War" with panel about the new trilogy (don't count out Andy Serkis) Sent from

.html.html Tonight wuz the Visual Effects Society's annual shindig and "War 4 the POTA" took home the big prize: Best FX for a Live-Action Feature. In the last 15 years the winner went on to win the FX Oscar 10 times (though one of the exceptions was "Dawn of the POTA"). Generally I keep hearing that "War" is expected to finally give Apes a much deserved Oscar but at this point I'll believe it when I see it.
"War" was the big winner for live-action feature this year, receiving 4 awards (Best FX Simulation, Best Compositing, Best Character Animation – Caesar, and the top prize). Also receiving 4 was the big animated feature "Coco" (expected to get the Animated Feature Oscar too). War's main competish for the Oscar, "Blade Runner 2" won 2 awards, and "Dunkirk" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" each won 1. WETA's Joe Letteri received the George Melies Award for his career, a crowning achievement for an FX guy and well deserved. The Apes films are just the tip of the iceberg for him (but no, he didn't work on "Titanic").
www.vfxvoice.com/master-creature-creator-joe-letteri-2018-ves-george-melies-award-winner/ Over their 50 years, the apes have been blessed to be brough to life by some of the best creature creators ever. From John Chambers to Rick Baker to WETA/Joe Letteri they've spanned many FX eras and hopefully will for many years to come, maybe in a new technique that isn't even a gleam in some genius' eye yet. <.html <.html

.html.html Pssst! Can we talk about Matt Reeves for a moment? Sunday we find out if his latest Apes movie wins an Oscar. Meanwhile, is it possible he will be the next Apes director too? Despite his dance card being full of "Batman" movies (he reportedly wants to do a trilogy, which would keep him busy the next decade) he continues to put himself out there like the ball is in his court. At his Jeff Goldsmith Q & A in December he said, "I hope they (the Apes folks) will wait for me". And at the USC event, when the question about the future of the Ape movies was brought up, Reeves practically yelled, "We'll see!" as if it's a given it's his to continue.
I think he seems born for these movies. Not everybody likes where he's taken the story but he does have the patience to film them and see the FX through to be the best they can be. They really are tough movies to direct. That's why I'm rooting for "War" on Sunday, not just as an Ape fan but because it's time that work got honored. And it seems like the tea leaves are pointing in that direction. So I'd love to see Reeves continue but if he's going to do Batman he might have to take a break for the next trilogy and then come back for a third trilogy. On the other hand, his Batman might implode and he could be back to Apes soon. There's also the question of what Disney will want to do (Can a movie series exist half Fox and half Disney?). But Andy Serkis isn't getting any younger and neither are we.
When "War" came out last July, Reeves said, "Future conflicts in this kind of epic journey (may) take us toward the '68 movie without necessarily ever getting there (and) could be about conflicts between apes, not just conflicts between humans and apes. And so, to me there are many more exciting stories to be told and I would love to tell those stories". But does he really want to tell Apes and Batman stories the rest of his career? Is Matt Reeves still da man? That'd be OK by me but the question lingers. www.slashfilm.com/war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes-sequel/

I don't see these lasting long as I doubt non-diehard PotA fans are going to shell out for them. I hope I'm wrong as I hate to see a licensee lose money on PotA which would deter others trying to put out more merchandise. But I don't want to encourage overpricing either.

According to one of the Facebook groups there will be yet another PotA book coming soon, this one from the publisher of the " Simians & Serialism" book that focused on the Goldsmith score. What is odd about this book is that the title is going to be simply "Location, Location, Location", which I found odd but had it confirmed as I thought I was misreading the blurb. I guess this will be focusing on ... well ... locations.
The Pithikos Entertainment site (publisher)

Thanks to Harry Barnes, here's a unique
promotional item: an LP provided to radio stations to
promote Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
The LP features "open" interviews with Kim Hunter and Roddy
McDowall, allowing local DJs to "interview". Side 2 of the
LP features a 14-minute featurette hosted by Dick Strout, in
which he talks with Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Sal Mineo,
and director Don Taylor.
You can listen to and download MP3s of the LP from the Escape Radio LP page.

.htmlJust after hearing about the "Locataion" book, there are even MORE PotA books coming out of the woodworks: BOOK 1: ------------ Our friend Saulo Adami is putting out his 4th PotA book but what makes this exceptional is that (A) it will be in English and (B) has a Graham Hill cover. The blurb: This is Saulo Adami's newest book on "Planet of the Apes". "Talking Apes" tells the story of the screen test with Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Linda Harrison and James Brolin, who convinced 20th Century Fox to produce the Franklin J. Schaffner movie. The book also presents the history of the film in Brazil, the work of Adami as researcher and author of four other books on this subject; the versions produced for
the cinema and the TRV in Brazil, the fan club created in 1984 and the fan "CVentury city News" (1985). The book can be purchased at the following addresses: Loja Estronho: https://www.lojaestronho.com.br/livros/cinema-tv-teatro-e-musica/cinema/talking-apes Amazon: https://amzn.to/2qsmQDMMy only problem is that both sales points listed are all in Spanish. :( BOOK 2: ------------ Greg Keyes who wrote the novel adaptations for Dawn and War will have an original novel called "Planet of the Apes: Caesar's Story". Will be picking this one up for sure. Amazon:

Subject: POTA and movie whistleblowing
.html.html I saw Spielberg's "The Post" about the Pentagon Papers and how they finally stopped the Vietnam War (and inadvertently brought down Nixon, since Dick wanting to "get" Ellsberg led to Watergate). The opening of the movie is about insider Daniel Ellsberg seeing the war firsthand and deciding to steal the secret Pentagon Papers, copy them and get the information out that the country had been misled. When Ellsberg is brought to the advertising agency where he will do the deed, there is a poster for the original POTA movie (among other movie posters) on the wall. That brought to mind Oliver Stone's "Snowden" where a colleague wearing an Apes T-shirt shows Snowden around the NSA station where he will do the deed.
There is prob no reason to think either was intentional to send a message but I thought it was a cool coincidence. For me one of the main themes of the original POTA and it's sequels is citizens going against the powers that be when they are wrong. Cornelius and Zira help Taylor and are helped in "Escape", Caesar and MacDonald in "Conquest", etc. So it was meaningful to me to see POTA in those two particular movies. They weren't just a cool Ape references. Not saying the filmmakers intended a message but it works for me. Two movies coming out a year apart, set decades apart (Ellsberg and Snowden are a mutual admiration society), I'll take it as a trend. And recommend them as a double feature for the more politically-minded fans.

So that explains the films. But there were novelizations, comic books and television shows pretty immediately after the success of the first film. Does Pierre Boulle and his family still get residuals from the franchise as it continues to be reinvented in all these mediums or does Fox own everything? If it does, did it attain it all with the Jacobs deal or was it later that Fox just bought it out? <.html <.html

.htmlActually the idea of watching POTA to honour Rory was first brought up by Michael.
I know this because he said he was doing so last weekend with his announcement on FACEBOOK. :) On Tue, May 8, 2018 at 12:08 AM smwhitty@... [PotaDG] <PotaDG@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

Rory wasn't big on sentiment. Those who knew him well might want to acknowledge him in whatever way feels ape-ropriate. Under the circumstances, it does feel like - if appropriate - we should do something to acknowledge kinship with this creature. Neil

.html.html Don't be a smartie! >: ( Last night I had my Rory tribute. I watched the original movie, not the whole thing but my favorite scenes. Then I have a Jerry Goldsmith CD, I guess it's called "Jerry Goldsmith" where he conducts the London Symphony. It's his best stuff but there's no POTA (Rory wouldn't approve!). I listened to that. You can't go wrong with the original movie and Jerry Goldsmith for Rory. Then I watched the end of "War 4" (Rory's last Apes movie), with Caesar's death. And then the great "War" extras about POTA history. Basically Fox's 50th anniversary tributes.
I ended with Jim Morrison's wonderful finale in "American Prayer (another guy who went too soon): "These mutants, blood meal for the plant that's plowed. They are waiting to take us under the severed garden… I will not go. Prefer a feast of friends to the giant kingdom". RIP Rory. .html Wasn't Rory also a huge fan of the original King Kong? I haven't watched that for a long time whereas Planet I have recently and don't really feel like doing so again at the moment. I could always read the Boulle novel again, I think I have a copy or two lying around here somewhere... <.html
