Meet Zira and Cornelius
Now here's a blast from the past!
Recently, an eBay seller listed a Super8 film that included, among other things,
footage of "Meet Zira and Cornelius," an official touring Fox
promotional event featuring Paula Crist and Bill Blake in full ape makeup and costume.
I won the auction, and I had the film digitized. As far as I know, this is
the first footage of one of these shows ever found. The video, as well as
a flyer for the show and contact sheets of photos of Paula and Bill that Mark
Graham sent in, can be found on this page.

I only discovered the existence of this magazine a couple of months ago: the
September 27, 1971, issue of Scholastic Scope magazine, which features
Escape from the Planet of the Apes on the cover (even though the
image is from Planet of the Apes).
A copy of this issue showed up on eBay a couple of weeks ago, and I snatched
it up so I could add it to the Magazines page. The
condition is poor, but since I've never seen one before, that's OK!
Inside, an abridged version of the entire plot of Escape is given in pseudo-script form!
I shouldn't have been surprised by that, because the
September 27, 1973, issue
did the same thing for Battle.

One of Dave "Dream-maker" Ballard's hobbies is painting and
customizing model and statue kits, and over the years, he's built up an amazing
body of incredible work. After he shared photos of a couple with me, I suggested

incredible models and statues.
Just as amazing to me as the model work are Dave's photographs of the models.

Years ago, I added scans of the covers of the Brazilian Planeta dos Macacos
comics to the Archive, thanks to Terry Hoknes and Tim Parati.
Today, thanks to Angelo Regalado,
I've added PDF and CBZ scans of all eighteen Brazilian Apes
comics—in color!—to the

Issues one through seventeen contain the art from the Marvel magazines, but
the eighteenth "Special Edition" issue contains the art from the
Power Records adaptation of the first film.
If you're not familiar with CBZ files, they're really just Zip files containing
JPG files. The special .cbz extension is recognized and read by various CBZ/CBR
display programs. One such free program for Windows (and the one I use) is

Back in late October 2004, Greg Plonowski and I began a weekly feature here,
posting PDF versions of the Marvel UK Planet of the Apes comics.
Each PDF was posted 30 years to the week of the original publication dates.
Greg did all of the work; I just took care of getting them posted.
Greg originally scanned the comics at print-quality 300 DPI. However,
few people then had the bandwidth or storage requirements for 300-DPI
scans, so we provided heavily-compressed, 150-DPI files.
We have now added 300-DPI PDF and CBZ files for each comic!
Marvel UK Apes Comics
Huge thanks to Greg for suggesting we upgrade the files and for doing the
scans in the first place! All of these years later, I'm still staggered
by the amount of work he put into scanning all 143 comics.

Mark Rogers is creating a 2021 Planet of the Apes TV Series Desktop
Calendar. Each image is suitable for use as a desktop background. He created
a size that he thought would work best for most people. He wrote,
"If these proportions don't work for people, using a solid color
background set to "#ff9900" will provide an adequate setting."
This is February's image. The March image will be posted near the end of
February.

Thanks to Peter Romeo, high-resolution scans of the promotional newspapers
Fox produced to promote each of the Apes films are now available. These
newspapers featured names like The Ape, and one was produced for each
of the five films.

It is with extreme sadness that I am posting about the untimely death
of Mark Talbot-Butler on December 29, 2020. His wife Tanya posted this
on Facebook:
Mark had spent the past few months working on another huge contribution of
stills for the Archive. He took pride in his work, and this isn't the best
way to display what he'd been doing, but he'd been posting "sneak peeks"
of some of the images on his Facebook group,
The Definitive Planet of the Apes.
I have gone through the group and have collected those images so that
everyone can see what he'd been up to.

Rest in peace, my friend. Thank you for your generosity and enthusiasm.
